Boram the Burglar |
who all lost str. damage to the rat bites? was it just Tengar, Dvalin and Boram?
that ungrateful human, how does he deserve that knife as Boram hears that Othdan is going to keep the "ghost knife" Boram walks over beside Yarask and tells him softly in dwarven. "I found that knife and Rodrik's ghost gave both of them to us. You had no cause to give it away without asking. And that human guard had no right to take it from Ruby and give to that ungrateful twit Othdan." Boram spits on the floor as he walks away from the dwarf, "It ain't right" Boram continues speaking but louder and in common. "We may well stay in tha common room till we get healed up. It has it's own outside door, that way we can leave this ungrateful little town, tha sooner tha better, yeah." As soon as they ushered into the common room Boram tells Ogden "Have em wake me for watch it don't matter which one I'm on." he then crawls up on a cot and goes to sleep.
in the morning Boram will roll his fort. for the filth fever, or whatever he got from the first rat bite.

Tegnar Giantslayer |

I'm down 3, so if I sleep first for 8 hrs, I'll only be down 1. Then I can rest again the next night to top me off. With as much as the rogues are down, they should consider resting for the full day to gain 4 points back. Assuming any intruders would have to come through the common room to get to the individual rooms, the rogues should stay in a small room with the rest of us in the common room. Can we bar the windows?
Tegnar waits while Cham sets up some cots in the main room and then prepares to lay down to regain his strength. "Let me rest for a while then I can take the second 8 hour watch with Aargh, so he can regain his spells, if Yarask and Dolgrym can take first watch."

Tegnar Giantslayer |

Of course, Ogden also cares for Tegnar, if he wants to rest with Boram And Dvalin.

I think you meant to have him cast Guidance on himself before making the heal check for a +1 bonus ;) (LTC DC is 15)

Dvalin Fafnirson |

Too late for 4 points, we already saw action today. For that, we would need to spend the whole day with bed rest...could do that tomorrow if it were not for the funeral, but today, 2 is all we can hope for, so may as well join the watch while continuing to rest(but being awake and looking around). I think the common room is downstairs with an extra entrance, and the small rooms are upstairs with one entrance each. No idea about the layout but I doubt if you have a private room you would always wade throught the "common" sleeping room first to reach it.

Yarask of House Dace |

Yarask can stay up the whole night if needed. He wasn't wounded after all.
Yarask shrugs as Boram complains about Rodrick's hopeknife:"Be as it may we had to give it back to Rodrick's family. I gave it to Ruby, Omast gave it to Othdan and Rodrick's family seems to agree with the choice. Nothing we can do now, but the Hopeknife was theirs to give not ours. Speaking of which this reminds me that we still have to give back Brynia's hopeknife too, but I suppose I'll let you decide what to do with it, Boram..." concludes the dwarf grinning.
When they are settled in the common room Yarask announces:"I think we've better exonerate our wounded from guard duty. I can take the whole shift guarding the common room shouldn't be such a big deal after all"

Boram the Burglar |
As they enter the common room was he not in the room with us? Looking at Yarask, "I don't give a rip about Brynia's knife, but Rodrick's ghost gave us the knives, he didn't say anything about needin' ta give it away, I'm just sayin we should've had a conversation. Because it's looking like he was the only one willing to pay us for our work. You might work for free but I do not. No self-respecting burglar does." as Boram goes to bed he begins plans Nothing we can do, my foothair, not hard to find out where a farmer lives or to cut a leather cord in the dark.

Yarask of House Dace |

Yarask shrugs again, showing his disinterest clearly:"I'm sure you do, Boram. You should bring your grievances to Rodrick's family if you think you deserve the knife more than the boy but personally I'm just thankful the knife helped me cut down those pesky rats that were having fun biting on you like you were seasoned halfling cheese, and I believe that was what Rodrick had intended all along when he gave us his knife. It did what it was meant to do, and after that it was just right to give it back to a member of Rodrick's family. But as I said, if you feel that strongly about it do not let me stop you, just remember we do not want to cause problems to the city or its inhabitants... so, whatever you do, do it carefully"

Dvalin Fafnirson |

Sipping his strong spirit sitting next to Boram, when the others left...
"So, how much should we charge them? Obviously I'm not interested in working for free, either. But we need to do this proper, they requested our Clan's help in this affair, and our clan will request payment for services rendered. We'll need to work up a draft with Rock. What what'cha think would be a fair payment? Considering what we had to put up with, I'd say a fair bit! Guess if we manage to actually CATCH Rodriks murderer, that'll be a fine argument for making them pay their bills."

GM Tribute |

As the two rogues sip spirits in the common room, the rest of the group heads to town to convert the treasure to coins. Everything was supposedly for sale at the Barterstones outside of town.
I might as well run both encounters together.
Cham, under instruction from Rock, prepared the common room to sleep the entire group and closed her inn for the day and left ample refreshments as Kurst had paid for only the best ale and mutton.
Although the inn was closed, when the doors opened, the two that entered were not patrons, they looked dangerous.
The rest of the group was returning from their time at the Barterstones. It appears converting over 1000gp worth of treasure in a small town requires some significant work on the merchants side to get together enough cash for lockets, gold boxes, gems, and other valuables.
After being slightly distracted by the crowd, the quintet of caped figures may have been difficult to see.
I will let everyone roll perception, remembering to add any favored enemy bonus versus orcs.
Some of the group had mused about why the trolls and half orcs ran away so quickly at midnight, not even staying around for a moment--leaving a prisoner locked tightly away. Maybe the ones meeting at the Plague House weren't in charge of delivering retribution?

Boram the Burglar |
Well, Common Room makes sense, since Ogden is caring for me and Boram for extended period of Time, while we rest 8 hours. 3 people will get crowded in a 10x10 room so I figure we NEED the common room and all stay together. Except for that, I have little suggestions to make. Except maybe that Boram and me should not be in the same watch shift alone...
@GM: Considering Ogdan needs to care for me and Boram for 8 hours so we get effect from long-term care, and HE also needs to sleep 8 hours to recover his spells, could we also do a 2-shift schedule of 8 hours each, since we need to rest 16 hours total, and 2 of us are out for one 8-hour block, and one other for the other 8-hour block? Since we spend the night in the plaguehouse and moved at a brisk pace there, I figure we must have returned in the early afternoon. And after the house of healing, while the others do selling and shopping, Ogden can already start caring for us, so I figure 16 hours should work out from late afternoon to morning.
Could also just explain that since we need that long to ensure we're all fresh and ready tomorrow, it just happens that people are awake either in the one, or the other timeslot, or someone may sleep overlapping. All in all, it would explain some of us being awake without us having to figure out we may want to keep watch while staying at an inn.
this infers Ogden is with us

Boram the Burglar |
Ogden Greyhammers daily post(in case he does not make it, as per request)
When Dvalin and Boran stomp of from the Temple, Ogden attempts to smooth things over with the priestess: "They had a hard day, and are bitter for a number of reasons right now. Your offer is generous, but we can't force them to accept it. You have my thanks-"
[dice=Diplomacy]1d20+6Later, as Dvalin and Boram settle down on their cots, exhausted from the day, Ogden starts caring for them, while the other clan members go out trying to sell some of the objects found at the plague house.

They are very weak...but the weakness will pass. In a few days, they'll be as good as new. I hope I got the amount of medicine for the halfling right...
here Dvalin was posting for Ogden as he was asked to do, it specifically says "Ogden starts caring for them, while the other clan members go out trying to sell some of the objects found at the plague house."

No Problem, I was again trying to make things less challenging.
Cham, under instruction from Rock, prepared the common room to sleep the entire group and closed her inn for the day and left ample refreshments as Kurst had paid for only the best ale and mutton.
Although the inn was closed, when the doors opened, the three that entered were not patrons, they looked dangerous. Ogden was up fully alert, and Boram and Dvalin had begun to take their rest. Ogden did not notice the half orcs had weapons and advanced until it was too late. but he had on some breastplate.
The rest of the group was returning from their time at the Barterstones. It appears converting over 1000gp worth of treasure in a small town requires some significant work on the merchants side to get together enough cash for lockets, gold boxes, gems, and other valuables.
After being slightly distracted by the crowd, the quartet of caped figures may have been difficult to see.
I am moving Ogden to inn group

Yarask of House Dace |

Since we are in combat and initiative has been rolled that means we recognize the threat these newcomers pose and choose to attack them, right? Anyway have we returned "just in time" or are our wounded party members alone against these funny caped folks?

Yarask of House Dace |

Perception check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Yarask notices the suspicious figures realizing their intent and runs towards them brandishing his earthbreaker!
Attack roll: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 4 + 2 = 17
Damage roll: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (2, 1) + 4 = 7
Charge!

Tegnar Giantslayer |

Squares are 20' correct? Also, is building "B" the inn?
perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16 whew
Tegnar also sees the figures. Realizing the rogues in their weakened state are vulnerable, he starts to run towards the inn with his waraxe and shield ready.
Who isn't in on the conspiracy to overrun this town? The guards are useless and must be in on it too. We can't trust anyone here.

Dvalin Fafnirson |

Yeah, we only have information for group 2. While I may not even get a turn, it would be interesting to know.
Also, Ogden obviously also looks out(and hereby also does his daily post as per request, in case he can't make it today):
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

Dvalin Fafnirson |

Yep Boram, but that roll was for Ogden, who did not do a Perception yet. I thought he may be back today, but since he did not post, I did another one for him.

Dvalin Fafnirson |

pity we are already resting and our perception and init is worth naught. It was a pleasure to be here with you, Gentleman. May we meet again.

In the Inn
Dvalin and Boram had followed instructions and laid on the cots, not fully going to sleep they were not fully alert either. The entrance of the figures caught everyone by surprise but Dvalin. Dvalin grabbed the crossbow at hand due to his training as a shocked Ogden found himself attacked by a trio of assassins and driven to the ground bleeding.
att assassin 1/damage: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 222d6 ⇒ (6, 6) = 12
In his fugue state, Dvalin finds himself prone with a crossbow as three assassins stand over the fallen and bleeding Ogden. His feet kicks Boram, who reacts faster than expected. He finds himself prone with weapons at hand too. In the half orc hands seem to be a strange alchemical blade, shining in the light and coated with a strange mixture.

Dvalin Fafnirson |

if they moved into the room wasn't that there move action in the surprised round?
I second this question insofar as they appear to violate either surprise round rules OR charge rules.
You must have a clear path toward the opponent, and nothing can hinder your movement (such as difficult terrain or obstacles). You must move to the closest space from which you can attack the opponent. If this space is occupied or otherwise blocked, you can't charge. If any line from your starting space to the ending space passes through a square that blocks movement, slows movement, or contains a creature (even an ally), you can't charge. Helpless creatures don't stop a charge. If you don't have line of sight to the opponent at the start of your turn, you can't charge that opponent. => invalidates charging if they were not already in the room.
In order to have line of sight in the surprise round, they would need to already BE in the room, with a clear, obstacle-free route to their target.
In that case, though, they just spent a round moving into the common room and positioning themselves, after opening the door.(or, in other words, Ogden should have been aware of them entering and be able to act on that information while they come into the room.)And even if only Ogden is aware of them entering, he could spend his surprise-round action(which they use to enter) to rouse us. Meaning Boram can take a normal action first in the regular round, and if Dvalin's perception was sufficient to find out about them himself, would get to act in the surprise round.
All in all, the situation would be similar, only they have not charged yet, and it's borams turn, with Odgen still happily up and standing with full HP.
I know you were already generous with the Weapons ready for us, but the situation still looks grim and we I'll try anything to get us out of here alive...getting boram to act first in a regular round with no surprise round would allow him to sneak one of them so that would be great for us already.

Dvalin Fafnirson |

since Boram is prone all he can do is stand and pick up a weapon so first round is shot for Boram, the good news is if he was laying down he could have his armor on but have removed the belt with equipment so his weight capacity will be at med.
Not really. You can fire a crossbow prone. Since those were conveniently provided by Cham or Kurst, presumably so we can help out with keeping watch later, you could fire them. Thing is, with the situation as written, with Ogden down, both of us prone and 3 of them using melee, we are shafted.
Option 1: We get up. We don't hurt them. They charge us next.
Option 2: We shoot while prone. No sneak, they acted already. We stay prone, everyone we don't kill closes the distance and attacks us at -4AC from being prone vs. melee. We provoke when reloading the crossbow or firing it. Only option is to draw a melee weapon and attack from prone position with penalty, or provoke standing up and give them another round to act.
Basically we have a close combat encounter with 3 Level 1(assumption) characters who get a surprise round against 3 other Level 1 characters, 2 of which start prone.
Before team two even gets to act, the one non-prone character gets dying, leaving 2 prone characters with ranged weapon in close quarters combat against 3 with melee.
Even without our strenght penalties this would be a kill setup. Drawing Melee and standing up would give them another round to focus someone down, ending 3 to 1, probably flanking too.
Imho the only chance we have is if you get to fire a shot prone with Sneak, or we both get to fire a shot before they charge. That would ALSO invalidate their sneak unless they flank, since we all acted in surprise or regular round then. That should already help a lot by lowering damage output.
Alternatively, you have a full round action. You could stand up and run away...problem is I doubt that would help much. Since they KNEW how many people to send, they knew how many we are, so not all 3 will chase mindlessly after you while I try tending to Ogden. But I also don't think it would increase your survival chances that much, since there's more outside, and you would just bolster THEIR numbers.

Boram the Burglar |
I don't have any ranged weapons except a sling, and its not drawn. I figure round one stand up behind furniture, draw a sword, use furniture for cover. then stay in the corner and make them come in one at a time, providing no flank, or something like that. We still need to find out about the furniture and the exit and why our cleric was attacked in the surprise round.

Yarask of House Dace |

Well then Yarask spends an action to get out his earthbreaker in the surprise round and charges the next, do I have to reroll? As for distance, Yarask has a movement of 30 ft due to being a barb so he can reach the nearest thug

Boram the Burglar |
not sure if I need to wait until Dvalin moves in the surprise round, so in round one
Hearing the noise as he awakens, Boram seeing Ogden assaulted and dropping to the ground, sits up in bed, seeing Dvalin is awake and active, I need to get out of this bed and find a weapon! rolling out of the bed, grabbing his shortsword as he stands to his feet, he begins to duck and look for cover.
