Just noticed that Jorgan bought mwk hide armor. Is that for his yak? A quick glance at Jorgan and Torgan shows they are still wearing basic armor (hide for Jorgan and scale for Torgan). We have a mwk breastplate for Jorgan and a +1 ironwood breastplate for Torgan set aside in the loot list for their use - are they not wearing them?

Sorry for the lack of posting. I got slammed with work (had to go in for that sweet overtime) and then ended up posting for a single scenario before my girlfriend rushed me out to the middle of Southern Indiana, aka No Cell Phone Service.

I dunno. I don't ever want to know.

As a side note, Wren is looking to others to plan the assault, whatever it may be. So far, plans have been suggested, but nothing that will get the yaks in.

Whatever you want Wren to do, he'll likely help, but if you want the yaks to come, it's on youse dwarves.

If left to his own devices, Wren is happy to take the sewery back door approach. Uh...no pun...uh...

Also, I'll have a lvl 6 Wren up later tonight.

Can we reach the sewers without going into the palisade? Also, Malt has Narrow Frame and can move in the sewers just fine, I think.

GM Ty, any thoughts on the time/efficacy on building a mighty Trojan Yak (with kegs for balls, I think)? How long? How much time/timber? Needs to hold 4 dwarves and 4 yaks.

Doing a bit of research shows that it took roughly 2 months to build the actual Trojan horse. This one being much smaller scale I would say roughly 3 weeks to build a crude one and a decent Knowledge Engineering check.

The engineering check to formulate ways to join wood together efficiently without the use of nails and this sounds like an engineering feat :)

That time above would include cutting down enough trees.

Sound fair?

Ok, I'm not sure if you guys are joking about the Trojan Yak plan, but I'll play along.

First, do we have time to mess around building one?

Second, it could be a lot smaller if we left the yaks outside, harnessed to pull it.

Third, Wren could play the role of a crazy old merchant (maybe disguised as a half-elf?) and drive it right up to the gates. Or abandon it and pretend to run off when confronted by a patrol, then sneak over the palisade later.

If three weeks, Wren may go back to the Fort LetsJustBeFriends and buy some more gear. After seeing the Fort, a few things might be helpful. Wren, beyond crafting a few leather harnesses for yak pulling/slinging, isn't going to useful in the creation of the Trojan Yak.

Yes, beer for balls and a yak feast pulling it to them. Surf & Turf Bovids & Beers.

Yeah, I grew up in the middle of nowhere on a farm. We have no immediate neighbors because we are surrounded by fields so the fast speed internet options stopped a few miles down the road either way. I had to live with dial-up until half-way through high-school when I begged my parents to get satellite internet. When I was out working, there would be entire fields with no phone service at all. Of course, back then I didn't have a smart phone yet anyways. It's gotten better now and smart-phones/3G actually work in most places but it's still dreadfully slow.

Of course, some of you are going "spoiled brat! I didn't have any internet when I was in high school!" but you are probably forgetting that I'm only 25 so dial-up was a thing of a past at that time....

I'll update Jorgan today but not sure I can export his stats from my iPad and I don't feel like buying a new licence for this loaner laptop.

That frustrates the piddlespot out of me. I wish I was GMing because I would happily excuse him from the table.

I would send him a PM warning, discussing what you expect at your table.

After that, I would kick him off. We have plenty of other players would love his seat.

As a perfect contrast though, observe the reaction of the player (Geatan) in the link I made to BS's game in my post. He is new to PbP (and I think English is his second language) but when BS asked for more roleplay from him during combat rather than just dice rolls, he asked how (prompting the post I linked to) and he actually listened to the advice and has been better so far. PbP has a learning curve but my troublesome player isn't even trying.

Ok, back to Giantslayer planning for a minute:

I am updating Jorgan and there are several 2nd level spells I could learn to help in our immediate situation:

  • Allfood: solve our food problem during travels and allow us plenty of time to build a wooden yak
  • Climbing Beanstalk: easily scale the palisade
  • Spider Climb: again, easily scale the palisade although I wouldn't have enough to cast on all the yahoos n' yaks
  • Warp Wood: isn't the palisade made of wood? Jorgan could just open a hole to walk through!
  • Wood Shape: this might be more applicable to the scenarios above in that Jorgan could just fashion a literal back-door through the palisade or could even insta-build a wooden yak with one or two castings.

I have to be honest, I'm really leaning towards Wood Shape and either plan (back door or wooden yak) is pretty appealing, the back-door because it is quite practical and could easily be pulled off and the wooden yak because it would be hilariously awesome if we could pull it off.

Jorgan and Wren's new abilities offer better options to infiltrate the fort, but the Trunau Yak would be awesome.

Still going with the awesome idea, I think summoned beavers and wood shape could make building the yak a matter of days vs weeks.

First though, I think we need to see what Wren's scouting reveals.

Agreed. Ok, Jorgan is going to take Wood Shape as his new spell and after some scouting and maybe a day to summon some beavers and use wood shape to build the Trunau Yak we should be good to go. And if that fails, we try the back door.

Eh-hem. I hate to boil anyone's skin, but despite my recent advice/warning I got another ooc-text and dice-roll post, which finally prompted me to send that PM. Here's what I sent, hopefully it's not too mean or threatening.

PM:
I have not been subtle in my attempts to get you to roleplay more and write higher-quality posts in our Trouble in Tamran game but you don't seem to be taking the advice to heart. Even if you are new to PbP and aren't quite used to the format yet, I have tried on several occasions now to get you to engage with the medium to no effect. This is really disappointing for me, especially to see such behavior coming from a 5-star GM.

To a PbP GM, the minimalist style of dice rolls with OOC-text and no description or dialogue during combat combined with an absence and complete lack of engagement with the story outside of combat is the equivalent to the guy who shows up to a face-to-face game and plays on his phone the whole time. It is very disrespectful to the GM and other players who are putting in a lot of effort to make the game interesting, especially via PbP where the other players are spending a fair amount of time each day crafting interesting posts only to get ooc-text and dice rolls back in response.

I am just writing all of this as a warning because I spoke about this problem with a few other online GMs and their suggestion was to kick you out of the game for not making an effort to improve. I don't want to do that yet because I think it could be discouraging to a new PbP player. If you do not have time to write an adequate post, I might suggest dropping from a few games and focusing on quality over quantity though.

I hope all of this serves as a healthy motivator to help you become a better and more engaged player in the PbP community. I really do think that when you strive to write better posts, you will find that you become more engaged in the game the experience will be more enjoyable for everyone.

Thanks,

GM EF

Say what...? wrote:
Ok, just to make sure I have this right hehe. Wren is going to fog the route in. Meanwhile the dwarves and yaks will approach the back of the Palisade while the yak mobile floats on the stream until it hits the dam?

So, the plan:

Assuming a few days to wheel the Trojan Yak upriver out of sight of the fort, Wren will practice patterned behavior modification as he creates fog clouds. At first, the orcs and giants might be alarmed by said cloud of fog, but nothing will happen and the cloud will eventually disperse harmlessly. (In this interim, Van and Wren might go check out the dam. Dunno) As the Ark of the YAK comes floating close to the fort and is noticed by the occupants, Wren will create another fog cloud. The orcs and giants will be like "Meh, happens everyday about this time. Probably from cold air flowing down the mountain and hitting the warm air convection currents coming from fort, making the fog...."

Then while the orcs and giants are pondering the Ark of the YAK, the dwarves and yaks will sneak in via a hole in the palisade made by Jorgan's woodshaping spell. Meanwhile, Wren is probably going to fly in under the radar and solo a couple sleeping giants.

Once inside, team dwarfyak will head for the sewer entrance and sneak into the fort. Mayhem ensues as everyone lays waste to the occupants of the fort. After some likely close calls, we win!

Make sense?

Why send the YAK down the river? If we let it fall into the hands of the orcs, loaded with beer, then that could be a better distraction with a longer duration (and other penalties) if some orcs get drunk. Also, since Vanderhoff brought up sabotaging the dam, I'm thinking we might be able to place Kraygan's grenades in a way to breach it at some point - maybe Hoff sets the grenades and in such a way that an alchemist fire could light them from a distance? Or maybe Wren lights them once we through the tunnel? That way we could flood the orc camp while we take on the Fort.

Yeah, I never quite understood the part about floating it down the river. I thought we would deliver it, loaded with booze (and/or explosives) to get the orcs distracted and drunk (and maybe exploded). While they are distracted, we slip in the back and start hacking necks, etc.

It appears that if we open the dam we'd flood the entire Orc encampment in the moat. How big are the hatches? How hard would they be to open? Could one be blasted open with a grenade?

Regarding the dwarf battlecry: did it come from inside the barbican or from one of those areas around it? We don't want to drown the dwarf before a rescue attempt.

Unfortunately with the short duration you only had enough time to investigate the hatches on the dam. That and you did not hear the scream until you were already flying away.

I say, "Down with meanie GMs!" ;)

Apparently, according to vicious rumors floating around the Hoosier hinterlands, I'm a soft-y GM. That's why I haven't killed one my local VO's PCs....

Gar! I will quash your rebellion! Having killed my fair share of VO PCs! No regrets. Not even from that time I killed my wife's wolf and made her cry....

Lol, ok, so maybe some regrets.

Hahaha. My first kill was my wife's pet raptor in Rise of the Runelords. Meanie Shocker Lizards fried it :(

Her wolf tried to take on a remhoraz and got eaten alive. It wasn't my fault!
