Thank you Gruff,

Tomorrow I plan to ask a few questions of everyone to help me start putting together the group. When all is said and done on Saturday. We will start playing up the characters.

I will be working on flushing out this cocnept and background tonight, so please aks if anything is unclear

I started the RP in the last S&S campaign recruitment thread and a few people got all huffy and quit too and the criticized me for making it difficult for them. *sigh*

I don't mind the role-playing to have some fun I just think it best to create a new thread so there is less clutter on the recruitment thread for the submissions, and not base any selections on that thread unless there is an absolute need to.

I don't mind the RP so much. No worries.

Not too late to submit my finished product is it? Please take a small gander and let me know what you think.

Backstory:
From the Diary of Servi Santaria, Shipmistress aboard the Steaming Sea “Carnivara” Rockhugger

The dreamscape, hived and twisted and serpentine, flows and eddies in ways I can’t describe, in myriad colors, and illegitimate architecture, and the dreams move on in their own time, and the places and people I visit form around me in the nonspace, and it’s chaos, pure, entropy. But that’s what I do, I find the commonality, the single string of the fabric of the pastel colored non-Euclidian geometry on the canvas and the patterns that links between all beings. I twist it, turn it and manipulate it. When I touch it, the string, it’s almost as if I can feel the sea, I smell the brine and the wash myself in the salty spray, and a deep drumbeat bellows and the thumping becomes me, and I follow the call as it beckons me somewhere, nowhere.

I am something ab-human, quasi-human, faux-human, and from theses recesses in the dreams of others I become the intruder, swimming through the alien landscape, places never meant to be seen. That is my power, the power to weave dreams out of the endless currents and tides of human emotion. And it scares me. For everything that I am, for all the men that I’ve met, for all the pleasures I’ve endured, for all the dreams I’ve explored and the dangers I’ve witnessed in mine own life, the sea is somehow my home, and, for all it is, it is the sea that scares me the most. This call, this force, it comes from the sea, but is not the sea itself, but rather something within, or even without it. It does not act nor speak, but I feel it. It is from this loathsome and dreadful force that I derive these powers. And for that reason I can only refer to it as the “Dread.”

Servi is a Changelling, but of course, that wouldn’t be something she would know, would it? Unbeknownst to her, Servi’s mother was a Sea Hag who consorted with a human somewhere in the Arcadian Ocean far, far too close to the Eye of Abendego. Whatever the hag’s reasons, the act of either magic or madness sired Servi, who wound up upon the doorstep of a newlywed couple far from the Eye in the city of Riddleport in Varisia. The couple, who just so happened to having difficulties giving birth to children, happily took in the strange small girl with the red and blue eyes and the pale skin.

It was here she was raised, and soon she blossomed into a young, eerily beautiful and willful young girl. Her father, a sailor, left when she was young to find his fortune on the seas. He did not return. It was at this time that she began to hear the pounding deep within the seas, something terrible and awe inspiring that seemed to call to her.

To help pay the costs of living, Servi took to the oldest profession in the world, and succeeded in integrating herself amongst the Calistrian prostitutes of Riddleport, earning her keep until her mother, consumed with grief over lost husband, went to sleep one night and never woke up.

The call grew stronger and stronger, more difficult to resist every passing day, until Servi could take it no longer. She made the decision to join onto a passing pirate vessel, using the only trade still available to her, acting as the thrall to the captain, a daring and admittedly handsome young man by the name of Captain Faulxaus. Her life had finally turned, whether to the better or the worse, she could not say. Servi was no weak submissive woman however, and any of the crew that sought to take advantage of her without her and her captain’s permission was taught just that fact.

Of course, Servi’s attractiveness was always accentuated by her otherworldliness, but strange events tended to occur around her, most glaringly when a blue ringed octopus climbed close to the ship and rested its tentacles upon the side of the hull where Servi had been standing, watching the sun crest the horizon above the water. The Octopus reached out its tentacle, almost as if to touch her. She did so, and against cries of the other shipmates to grap or spear the thing, Servi said aloud that she was going to name it “Perro.”

A pirate’s life is a dangerous one, and after a couple of years playing person courtesan to Captain Faulxaus their ship was beset by rival pirates and the captain was slain. She was taken captive just like many of the other prisoners, but during these tumultuous events Servi began to learn of the powers she hadn’t been aware of up until now. Many of the shipmates aboard this new vessel, Captained by a stern, hard and soft-spoken Captain Bly, were of the superstitious sort, and after a few days of storms decided to put the blame on the women sitting in their holds. As they came for her, however, Servi felt a bumb against the side of the hull and new at once it was the Blue-Ringed Octopus she called Perro. With the animal’s presence, Servi felt a power welled up inside her and lashed out with the magic she did not know she had even possessed. The first of the pirate band fell asleep at their feet and hit his head hard against a nail as he fell. The others, as they reached through the bars, were hypnotized by her gaze and movements, and when she asked them to go fetch the captain for her they obliged with smiles on their faces.

She seduced this captain just like the other, and the next night, as she laid in his bed with him, a peculiar sensation arose within her. While she could not see the captain’s dream it felt almost as if she could feel it, a blue tapestry set against the backdrop of the waves, and Servi knew she had touched upon some of her more awesome powers.

She served this captain for many years, on a ship she learned later to be called the Carnivara. She was showered by her captain in fine dressing and jewelery, but while she enjoyed these gifts, they were never more to her than tools of her trade. Her regular fascinations still lied with her newfound gifts and the calling from underneath the sea which she new innately to be connected. Years after first coming upon the Carnivara that ship took port at a small pirate’s cove called Port Peril, where upon docking Servi was told to wait in the local tavern called the Formidably Maid for her captain. Somehow there she passed out and from there, I believe, is where we begin our story.

If selected I intend to roleplay Servi as a strong woman, yet one who is still concerned with her looks and presentation. I imagine her as having a latina accent and physical features, though if those did not come through in my writing I hope to make them more believable and noticeable. Servi’s original Patron is Portents but all of the Patron Spells are changed by the Dreamweaver archetype. I’m totally fine with having Servi’s story only integrated a bit into the story of the AP as I know how difficult that is to do in some AP’s I’ve played. I think I’ve made her open ended enough to go through a character arc without too much overt assistance. I know this is late, but please, if you have any questions let me know and I’ll try to address them promptly.

Crunch

** spoiler omitted **...

It's not to late.

Thought I would give an update with the full character details, so here we go. I always prefer to wait until I've been accepted before making an alias, it keeps things from getting too cluttered that way.

Tolyn:
Full Name: Tolyn Brinely
Race: Gillmen
Class: Witch
Gender: male
Size: 6'2” 185lbs
Age: 28
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Deity: Besmara
Location: Shackles
Languages: Common, Aboleth, Aquan, Draconic, Elven
Occupation: Pirate

Strength 10
Dexterity 14
Constitution 12
Intelligence 17
Wisdom 10
Charisma 12

Background:

Tolyn's family lives near the shore to hide from their Aboleth foes. They have long fought against them, with limited success. The Brinly family has long since resorted to piracy to help finance their private war, though it seemed as though Tolyn was destined to stay on the sidelines of it, since he lacked the usual hereditary resistance to the Aboleths' mental domination. It seemed that way until Tolyn one day noticed a parrot speaking to him in the Aboleth language. It promised him power, and fortune for his family. Knowing this must be a servant of his hated enemies, he first tried to kill the animal, but was unable to. The bird told him that there were no expectations of him, he was free to act as he wished, his patron would grant him powers over time, and all he had to do was wait until he was called.

The only hint that Tolyn's patron actually is an aboleth is the language that his familiar speaks. Regardless, he regards himself as a traitor to his family, and has stayed away since then. He has tried his hand at sailing, though he thinks he would be better in an advisory position. He found himself in the Formidably Maid just after he accepted the parrot's bargain, wondering what he'd gotten himself into. Also, it should be noted that his last name is actually Brinly, though he goes by Brinely, he's gotten so used to people making the joke that he's come to accept it as his name.

Since becoming a Witch, Tolyn's faith in Besmara has strengthened, as he believes, or hopes, that she will give him the strength to use his newfound abilities to fight against the Aboleths. He plans to do this by sailing on a pirate vessel, and turning over some of the money he makes to his family. He has been warned that he lacks a certain resistance to mental domination, and so he is to keep away from the hated enemy as best he can. Despite his suspicions over his patron, he enjoys the company of his familiar, treating it like something in between a pet and a friend.

OOC: wow people get upset at the RP? Isn't that the whole point of this experiment? :) / OoC

A hesitant halfling walks into the Maid. His clothing is obviously new, not yet shaped to his small frame. Off white shirt, rust red vest, dark brown breeches, short boots of sturdy leather. He looks around the room in a mix of wonder and wariness, before taking a seat in the small folk tables.

" beer, and fish stew girl." he say to the wench, not un kindly, but un polished. When the victuals arrive, he tucks in with a purpose, as if it were his first meal in days.

The Exchange

GM I am ready to do anything sir let me know what you want me to do sir

People get upset when it's at the recruitment thread. Recruitment is recruitment. RP is RP. But I'm not stopping you.

So from what I understand then is that everyone should only be allowed one post other than the GM in recruitment threads and they can edit those? Any extra posts is taking attention away from others if I read things right. I am just asking so I know that I shouldn't dot for interest and I shouldn't post extra character concept later. I should have one post and stick to that to give everyone a fair shake. Just trying to learn the etiquette for what everyone has for a recruitment thread.

The Exchange

It all depends on how the gm sees things I asked the gm in a pm if I cod start it an he said that it did not matter but he did not want it interfering with recruitment and I said okay so once people started leaving I put a stop to it. The gm is a great man so I did not want to disrupt him. I know that everyone here will have a fair shot even those whom left if they still want it I am 100% sure of that so

As I was starting it all depends on the fm's style not each page test out them first before goin full blown rp

It would be neat if there was a recrutement thread and an RP thread that were seperate but linked, giving people the oportunity to get a feel for their character prior to starting the AP but not clouding the recruitment process.

Yeah. I think there's enough RP that goes around that Paizo should add a preliminary role-play subforum in the online campaigns

OK recruitment is closed.

Those picked will be posted September 1st around 2:30pm - 3:00pm CST.

However, I may have questions for some of you.

Some of these questions will be posted publicly some in pm form.

The Exchange

Good luck to all

Luck of the waves to you as well!

May the odds be ever in your favor!

. . .Sorry about that, the Hunger Games came out recently, and that was one of the most faithful movie adaptations I've seen, possibly ever.

Update.

questions that comes to mind.

EVERYONE
1. What position do you see your character taking up on the ship? cook/captain/exc...

2. Do you currently intend to play your class pure or multiclassed?

Grand Lodge

1. Hornan doesn't want to be the captain. He would want to do something that gets him as much fighting time as possible.

2. Most likely staying pure barb, but might dip fighter for a couple feats

About Tropical

Being an Oracle, she's going to have a good charisma score, so she could work as a mate. (no guys. no. stop being gross.)

I'm still deciding whether or not she'll be a rage prophet or not.

1. I see Xaven as a good first mate, as a survivalist he would look to stand at the side of the most powerful he could find. He is agile, probably good in the rigging, his darkvision making him an ideal nightitme lookout. Lookout and scout are other fitting titles.

2. Ranger all the way.

1.Erik's goal would always be to become captain, that being said ambition does not always equal aptitude. Barring captain, first mate, master of arms maybe.

2.Have not seen any really good magus prestige classes yet so plan on just magus.

Pure as the driven snow and first mate.

I see Sasha as a rigger. she loves to be topside and feeling the sea air. it helps her feel closer o her mother.

as far as levels go I plan to take a level or 2 dip into Bard (mostly for the class skills) possibly a dirge bard

1. Afzara wants to explore the seas and work on making the lady that she sails upon is taken care of. She is trying to learn how to become a quality shipwright.

2. Afzara is going pure. She will be able to do combat but will be focusing some on her ship related skills over full combat.

Grand Lodge

Cerinnibert would take on any job that needs doing, as he has had experience on ships before, and could do any of them well.

He is going to stay pure druid, as as a Weather master, could be very useful on board as he gains in levels.

Willis has no idea what he wants :) he could be a gun monkey, a rigger, a look out, as long as he is getting fed and has shelter from the storm...

Re classes: dunno, guess I'd have to see where the adventure takes us, and if this class stays useful to the group. I'm seeing him as a hard hitting skill monkey, devil may care adventurer type.

As mentioned in her background and personality, Sharice isn't planning to try for anything less than the top spot. If someone else pops up who will obviously and self-evidently do a better job of it, at least in the beginning, she may be willing to accept that and work with them until things advance far enough that she gets her own ship. But she will command her own ship eventually.

As to leveling progression, I expect to go straight Barbarian all the way through. I'm not a good enough mechanics wrangler to mess around.

EDITWhoops, posted as the correct alt.

1) Lucia sees herself taking on the role of first-mate, or possibly leading the boarding parties with the skills she'll be developing later. While she has a strong personality that would lead her to a high position, she knows she's a bit of a "fancy jacket" and would prefer to be in a place where she can make suggestions rather than decisions.

2) Lucia will be multiclassing after first level, probably going mostly as a Bard (Court Bard) with a focus on mind-affecting spells. The Court Bard's bardic performance lowering enemy morale both making them easier to enchant and taking the fight out of them is perfect thematically for a "Siren's Song" type of magic.

First mate. Renzuran wants to be a captain, but is at least conscious of the fact that he needs more experience. However, his training as a cleric of Besmara has more than prepared him for serving on a ship (not to mention such work is considered core to the faith), and his life growing up in Port Peril has familiarized him with the lore of the Shackles. Combine that with his healing spells, and he looks to make a good second-in-command, or at the very least the ship's resident priest.

As for classes, I had planned to stay pure cleric. I guess with my stats I could conceivably dip into rogue at some point, but to be honest I'd rather not give up the higher caster level/increased spell slots or mess with my feat selection. Bad touch cleric all the way.

I intend to stay a Witch the whole way through. As for what position on the boat, Tolyn doesn't want to be captain, first mate might be better, but he doesn't want that much responsibility either. I think the ideal post for Tolyn is Boatswain.

The Exchange

Well then I expect to change some skills around and go for ships cook and I will be going straight rogue for the long haul I will get my skills changed up here shortly because no one else even thought about it

1) Chills wants a position that affords him the luxury of staying below decks during the day, so perhaps Captain or First Mate. Being the surgeon would have certain - perquisites. He'd also be willing to do the night shift/watch.

2) Chills is likely destined to take a few levels in rogue, it fits his concept and would take advantage of his high dex.

1. Servi has the persuasive ability (I plan on giving her ranks in social skills as well), but mostly the intellect necessitated in high stress situations and would most likely serve as adviser (and depending on how things might develop something more) and envoy during a parlay or in dealings with the mainland. Servi has that sort of class, though stats-wise I had to sacrifice some charisma I wanted to take in lieu of being, well, competent at surviving with increases in dex.

2. I'm going straight Witch with this. Hexes are level dependent and the Dreamweaver archetype takes away a few from me as it is. Good thing Hexes have level-dependent bonuses. The only archetype for multiclassing I'd ever consider is Spellslinger wizard to raise the DCs of my spell's saving throes, but it's not something I'd really want to do. Besides, I think Grand Hexes (Namely Natural Disaster) are just too cool to pass up on.

Willis Cana Dhum wrote:

OOC: wow people get upset at the RP? Isn't that the whole point of this experiment? :) / OoC

That was pretty much my question too. Then WTF are you doing here? Sheesh.

Alivia is set up for very good interaction skills, bluff, diplomacy, and intimidate all very strong (around +10 in all of them to start), plus spells to augment that. She has a strong personality, she'd be very good in an officer spot. Someone who has to deal with the crew a lot (keeping them in line, inspiring them, settling disputes, etc) as well as someone who would be good to deal with all of the diplomacy/trading/negotiation between the ship and the rest of the world. She'll be good at battlefield control spells and mind spells as well.

As with her background, she's doing primarily sea witch and she has the initial level of water sorcerer. I have no plans to get a level in anything else.

1. What position do you see your character taking up on the ship? cook/captain/exc...
A: Cook obviously! Or if that's not available, watchstander. Nothing inspires confidence like the guy with no eyes on lookout.

2. Do you currently intend to play your class pure or multiclassed?
Currently thinking of splitting with Rogue (Pirate Archetype).

Dark Archive

I see myself as a utility crew on the ship as I havee the ability to breathe underwater, so scouting underwater, repairing ship hull, freeing stuck anchorage etc. Also I see myself as a crew that specialises in boarding and attacking other ships with her fighting skills and due to her cruelty, the hitman for those unpleasant jobs such as killing someone in cold blood etc.

I play to play mostly monk and will spec a few levels of fighter for the bonus feats or rogue.

As an alternative to Boatswain, since Alivia sounds more qualified for that, Tolyn could be the, for want of a better term, spooky magical guy. He has a decent natural talent for determining value, he can make scrolls of the spells he knows to hand out to any other spellcasters, and he should be decent at identifying magic items, so I can easily see him as a scholar, or advisor to whoever needs it, if the boat needs one. Though since no one else has suggested it, as far as I remember, I may swap my profession for craft (carpentry) and suddenly become the most valuable person on the boat. . .

That is what a shipwright is. There is ones who work on ships and then ones who build ships. That is what Afzara was trying to do.

The Exchange

I was also ponder the fact that I could do the navigator taking ranks in cartogorpy and mapmaking ect. That might be fun

Though Doreen's natural inclination would be taking the position of a master-at-arms or gunner, she is cocky enough to picture herself as ship's captain.

I intend to go Gunslinger all the way through 20th level. I also plan to put ranks in the social skills too, though 1st lvl was mostly focused on physical abilities.

1. Well ole Malack will most likely be puking over the side of the boat after a night of revelry. I suppose when he's feeling up to it he'd probably be up for just about any work. Given his unreliable tendencies regarding his work history I'd say on a pirate ship you could count on him most in a scrap. He's not going to swab the deck well, though he'd do it at blade point.
2. I think Malack needs at least one level of rogue to be a proper fit and probably as a pirate archetype.

1) given that this is my first rodeo I figured I'd just sit back and see how things play out from there. Given that I'm a cleric though surgeon tends to come to mind, worshiping Besmara opens up a few options as well.

2) for the time being I intend to be a straight cleric until I meet requirements to become a divine scion.
