Kappi smiles at the strange moment. Not so long ago something like seeing the shade of a dead cat and speaking with it would have been the weirdest thing he'd ever seen. But lately, not so much...

The party pauses a moment for Edward to heal everyone with his magic boots (or whatever, Kappi still didn't quite understand how it worked).

While Ali stands guard, the others search for the stump monster's hidden treasure hoard.

A tangled mass of overflowing weeds and thorny brambles grows in profusion here. A scattering of bleached bones lies entwined in the barbed tendrils of the wiry thicket.

    Kappi:
The Varisian can see a towering plant-like creature among the mass of vines and barbs. Several stalks are horribly mobile, each ending in a set of green, toothy jaws.

(It is located right at the bend on the map, though it's not visible to anyone but Kappi right now.)

For just a moment the lad gives the elf an odd look. Clearly the joke passed right over him. But after half a second he gave it no more thought. Quite often Ali or especially Davosh would say things the lad could make no sense of.

    They can.

    confirm?: 1d20 + 17 - 3 - 5 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 17 - 3 - 5 - 2 = 13
    But it did not.

Ali, inexplicably, cannot touch the plant.
Wait, let me check Kappi's Bewilder thingie...
Reads, reads more, references half a dozen other things that aren't clear...
    Meh, eff it.

Ali manages to touch the plant!

Ed decides to call the plant Bruno while taking a small step forward. Bruno they are not your dinner. Put them down now.

Immediate action: Cast Liberating Command CL4 on Kappi. DM Ed would have done this at the grapple so would this change some of Kappi's strikes to a hit?

He then launches 2 arrows at Bruno the plant.

    Longbow: 1d20 + 14 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 14 + 1 = 26
    Damage: 1d8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 1 = 6
    Longbow: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 9 + 1 = 23
    Damage: 1d8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 1 = 6

Ed's life link then heals Vojtek, Kappi, and Ali they each heal 5, Ed takes 15. Current HP 73/88

Despite Edward's immediate-action spell, Kappi is held fast, and both of his arrows sail wide EDIT: whoops, one hits due to Kappi's debilitating strike... his first arrow sinks in!

The giant flytrap tries to eat its meal(s)...
    grapple check vs. Ali (1): 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (15) + 26 = 41
    grapple check vs. Ali (2): 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (19) + 26 = 45
    Success, Ali is engulfed.
    digesting: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
    plus acid: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 5) = 10

    Engulf (Ex):
If a giant flytrap begins its turn with an opponent at least two size categories smaller than itself grappled in one of its mouths, it can close its jaws completely around the foe by making a new combat maneuver check (as though attempting to pin the foe). If it succeeds, it engulfs the prey and inflicts 1d8+9 points of damage and 2d6 acid damage as the cavity floods with digestive enzymes. The seal formed is airtight, so an engulfed creature risks suffocation.

Engulf is a special form of pinning, and an engulfed creature can escape in the same way as he can from being pinned, but since an engulfed creature is contained wholly inside the plant's jaws, the flytrap's victim cannot be targeted by effects or attacks that require line of sight or line of effect. A giant flytrap that is grappling or pinning a foe cannot attack other targets with that bite, but is not otherwise hindered.

    grapple check vs. Kappi (1): 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (1) + 26 = 27
    grapple check vs. Kappi (2): 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (4) + 26 = 30
natural Jeff! Kappi is FREE from the grapple!

    grapple check vs. Vojtek (2): 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (6) + 26 = 32
    Success, Vojtek is engulfed.
    digesting: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
    plus acid: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6
