Vojtek Wartooth |

Vojtek begins looking at the ground intently, searching for insight as to what happened based on the imprints left on the snow.
Take 20 - Survival: Tracking +4 = 24

Vojtek Wartooth |

"Boy! Stop jumping all over the tracks!" Vojtek immediately feels badly for scoldong Kappi butthe lad was risking the only clues available with his misguided attempts.
"See if you can get that svord out of the ice instead."
Vojtek still felt bad, but setting Kappi to a useful task should help keep him from feeling too embarrassed.

Kappi Matarito |

Kappi's face clearly falls at Vojtek's words, yet he cant argue with his truth. Still having a job to do does take his mind off of it. He pulls out one of his trusty hand axes and gently starts chipping away at the frozen sword.

Vojtek Wartooth |

Great White man! Vojtek is astonished at the ineptitude of the new companions he has found. Help Kappi with that ice!
The barbarian shakes his head in frustration as he continues to puzzle out the confusing tracks.

Vojtek Wartooth |

Edwards tracking takes him near the other carriage. Any tracks around here?

If you guys have positive modifiers for survival, taking 10 would ensure a successful aid another... DM - can we assume at least Kappi and Edward do so? Vojtek's final check is 28 if so.

Since the difference between 24 and 28 is not significant in this particular case, I'm going to let their rolls stand this time and instead let you guys rollplay Vojtek teaching them some tips on Survival. That will let them Take 10 next time around.
Edward is admonished by Vojtek, but doesn't go to aid the rogue just yet; he notes that the second carriage is upright and has a longspear wedged in front of the doors, acting as a makeshift lock holding them shut.

Davosh the Wanderer |

"Obviously there is something in there. I'd suggest we just burn it to the ground, but there may be something of interest in there.... or survivors that too. Liska, how does it smell over there?"

GM thunderspirit |

Davosh the Wanderer: part goblin. :-D

Vojtek Wartooth |

After he knocks, the barbarian steps back and listens intently. He looks down and sees some interesting tracks he hadn't noticed before, tracks he does not know. He ponders them silently as he waits for some stirring behind the door.
He brushes his hand over the flat of his exposed blade and marvels at the formation of a thin layer of hoar frost on the steel. He hasn't seen the like in this clime before. Maybe the old woman was right about the unnatural cold...

GM thunderspirit |

There is no answer to Vojtek's knock at the door.
Liska is unhappy about what she detects using her scent near the carriage. Death, she says. Smells like death.

GM thunderspirit |

Muffled sounds of movement emanate from inside the carriage as Vojtek removes the spear. He opens the door to reveal two shambling figures, each still wearing the bloodied and soiled remnants of Taldan livery. The flesh appears to fall away from the figures as they stumble forward out of the carriage.
Initiative!

Initiative (Ali): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Initiative (Kappi): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23

Initiatve repost:
Kappi - 23
Vojtek - 21
Ali - 20
Davosh - 11
Edward - 6

Kappi Matarito |

Round 1
Kappi watched Vojtek open the carriage doors. Sensing something bad might come out, the young Varisian already raised his spear ready to throw. As the two things shambled out, without thinking he threw his spear.
Thrown short spear 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 1 = 9
damage 1d6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 + 1 = 7

Vojtek Wartooth |

Round the First
Vojtek bares his fearsome teeth with a feral snarl when he sees the undead. He hates the undead because they represent the ultimate disrespect and perversion of the ancestors. These disgusting creatures are someone's father or grandfather, but instead of being enshrined in a cherished memory they are shambling around in a locked carriage. Shameful and awful.
I assume I can get to at least one for an attack- I can't see the map but I requested access just now. If Vojtek can set up a flank with someone he will (if so please add +2 to the attack below)
The greatsword had been resting tip down on the wooden step of the carriage, gouging a small divot into the worn wood as Vojtek removed the spear from the door and tossed it aside. In an instant the massive blade is up and whistling towards the closer undead. Vojtek aims to sever its head from the rotting torso, but in sacrificing accuracy for power...
Power Attack with Greatsword: 1d20 + 5 - 1 ⇒ (14) + 5 - 1 = 18 for 2d6 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (2, 5) + 6 + 2 = 15 damage.
As the frosted steel meets the monster, the creature's loosened skin sloughs off allowing a reeking putrescence to dribble down its exposed ribcage. The smell is awful. Worse, as Vojtek's blade slams into the thing, filthy goo splatters and gets onto him.
Sputtering and angry, Vojtek quickly wipes the filth from his face before regripping the hilt of the greatsword in preparation for a counterattack.

Ali'yanah D'ohr'hein |

ROUND 1
Ali has a sling out and ready, so lets loose. (if Vojtek took down the first zombie with his blow, shoot the other. Otherwise, shoot the same one) She then drops the weapon, draws her blade, and steps (5') closer to engage.
Sling: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 2 - 4 = 9
Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

GM thunderspirit |

Vojtek's greatsword slices one zombie as it lurches out of the carriage and cuts it completely in twain.
Ali's sling bullet sails over the carriage completely, and she angrily casts it aside as she draws her curve blade and begins to move closer to her undead foe.
I moved Ali on the map. Is everyone now able to see it and move their tokens?

Vojtek Wartooth |

First Blood! W00T! I can move my token.

Round 1, but this will be after Davosh
[ooc]tested my token on the map, gtg [/b]
Edward moves up sling gently spinning he gets a clean look at the undead. He agrees with the barbarian that they are an abomination.
sling: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3

Dungeon Master S |

Davosh looks about and knows that his teammates have this well in hand. Just in case he takes out his crossbow, then casts Guidance on himself.

GM thunderspirit |

Sorry, couldn't get back to this last night and been swamped this morning.
Zombie up.
The walking corpse does not seem to notice as Vojtek drops its companion, five-foot-stepping atop it to get at the Northerner.
slam: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
dmg: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
The undead creature strikes the barbarian with surprising force in his chest. Vojtek sucks in his breath as the blow nearly winds him.
Davosh draws his crossbow and casts guidance.
Edward follows Ali's example and launches a sling bullet at the foul thing. However, since he is firing a missile into melee, his shot takes a -4 and misses, thunk-ing harmlessly against the carriage side.
Round 2: Kappi, Vojtek, and Ali!

Ali'yanah D'ohr'hein |

ROUND 2
Only if needed...
Ali makes a sharp warcry and charges straight at the zombie, swinging her blade down in a fierce overhead chop.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 + 2 = 18
Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 <--Well, fierce-ish anyway

Kappi Matarito |

Round 2
Kappi takes a 5 foot step forward. The young lad curses as his nerves ruined his first shot. "We must be quick but more importantly we must be accurate..." he says to himself in his head. He takes a deep breath as he brings back a javelin to throw. With half a moment to aim, he throws...
Attack 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 4 + 1 = 23
Javelin 1d6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 1 = 4
fyi to the DM, Kappi has both precise shot and point blank shot feat
The young lad beams with pride as his javelin lands true on the torso of the zombie.

Vojtek Wartooth |

Round the Second
Vojtek sucks wind as the zombie unfortunately hit him right in the solar plexus. The pain is manageable, but another hit like that and Vojtek knows he's through. With grim determination and a ferocious shout, the barbarian swings his greatsword with incredible violence.
The already freezing goo that is coating the blade from the first zombie flies off and splatters the side of the cariage as the massive sword arcs towards the foe...
Power Attack with Greatsword: 1d20 + 5 - 1 ⇒ (10) + 5 - 1 = 14 for 2d6 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (5, 2) + 6 + 2 = 15 damage.

GM thunderspirit |

Kappi's javelin strikes true, alighting squarely in the chest of the zombie. For some reason, however, the creature seems wholly unaffected by the blow and continues to flail away at the barbarian.
Ali draws her sword and charges forward, her voice raised in a war cry as she feels the adrenaline rush of battle.
Vojtek, hearing the elf, is strangely inspired by her shout, remembering the glory that bathes the victorious. He overcomes the pain in his abdomen and hacks heartily into the undead enemy. The barbarian's blade strikes the neck of the zombie and chops it clean away from the body. It rolls near Ali's feet as her cry falls silent.
Combat over!

Kappi Matarito |

Kappi is amazed at the might swings of Vojtek's blade. He comes up and congradulates the warrior on a job well done. Ive been involved a few skirmishes before but Ive never seen such powerful sword blows before. Two swings of your sword and two enemies slain. Though I did puncture the second one pretty good. He was at least half killed... The boy stops talking thinking for a moment. Hmmm... What is the term "re-killed"? Or is it "slain for real"? Either way great job everyone!
Kappi recovers his two thrown spears then moves forward to check out the carriage. With ax in hand he makes sure there is no lurking monsters inside. After that he looks for loot.
Perception 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

GM thunderspirit |

Kappi digs about in the carriage, surfacing excitedly in a moment with a small locked jewelry box. Nothing else of note is found inside.
For the record, I will presume that Kappi was successful in extracting the MW longsword from the ice, so the party has that to use as well.

![]() |

Well done everyone. Vojtek the power you put behind your swings is amazing. Kappi nice precision with your javelins.
He walks up to Vojtek, places a hand on his shoulder. May Apsu lessen your pain
Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Edward steps over to the fallen undead and says in a whisper Wayfinder,Please help these lost souls reach their destination so they can relinquish their physical bodies and not cause this realm pain anymore.
He looks up Ohh a jewelry box nice. I hope it contains a clue on how to go forward. If not mayhaps there might be another clue as to where they took her.
Assist on Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (5) + 0 = 5 <~~~~is dazzled by the shiny box

Vojtek Wartooth |

Or maybe we just found some treasure that we can split.
Vojtek eyes the riches with a certain amount of lustiness. His blood is surging with the heat of battle still, his cheat is heaving and his hands are shaking slightly.
Thank you for the compliments on the battle, men. Kappi, nice throw!
Take 20 search the carriage - inside and out (on the ground underneath too). 20+4=24. Finally, what is the general level of repair of the carriage? I'm thinking about selling or using it. Maybe if we are pressed we could return it to the nobles or something...
As part of his thorough search, Vojtek begins dragging the zombies clear of the carriage and piling them up well clear of the scene.

Kappi Matarito |

While Vojtek goes back over the carriage and drags the zombies away, Kappi finds a nice clear spot to work. He pulls out a small bundle of wrapped oil skin. He unrolls it to reveal his unlicensed treasure hunting tools.
He first inspects the jewelry box to see if there are any traps. After he is relatively certain he attempts to open the box.
Perception for traps 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 7 + 1 = 12
Disable device for the lock 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9

Davosh the Wanderer |

"Since you're sure it's not trapped my boy, try again. Ancestors of the caravans, guide your scion." I cast Guidance. Try again with an additional +1

Ali'yanah D'ohr'hein |

Hmmm... What is the term "re-killed"? Or is it "slain for real"?
Ali sheathes her sword and retrieves her sling. I think it's "All dead." She gives Vojtek a hearty slap on the shoulder and a firm nod of approval.

Kappi Matarito |

"Since you're sure it's not trapped my boy, try again. Ancestors of the caravans, guide your scion." I cast Guidance. Try again with an additional +1
Kappi gives it another try after Davosh's spell.
disable device to open lock 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 8 + 1 = 27Astounded by the ease of the lock, Kappi looks at Davosh in astonishment. Your magic is very powerful. I cant believe how simple it was after you cast your spell. The gypsy lad is convinced of Davosh's mystical abilities.

GM thunderspirit |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Kappi struggles with the small lock the first time, but gamely makes a second try after Davosh bestows the guidance of his ancestors, and is successful this time!

Vojtek Wartooth |

Vojtek knows little of engineering, but he is quite strong. He clears the debris and detritus away from the wheels and tests how easily the carriage can be moved.
How far away from town are we? And is it possible for Vojtek to drag or push this thing back to town? 19 STR...

![]() |

As the Zombie bodies are being moved around. Edward is looking at them, obviously lost in thought. Davosh is about ready to say something about a slow mind when Edwards face lights up and he snaps his fingers.
Hold there a second on those bodies. Here everyone let me show you something. I just remembered some of my teaching now bolstered with practical experience. Zombies aren't made like the living are. See the hole were Kappi's spear went? Well if that were you and I, that would have pierced a lung, zombies don't breathe, so that type of wound is less effective. Weapons like Vojtek, and Ali's swords cause much more damage to zombies, while piercing and bludgeoning weapons do less damage than what we would think.
Edwards looks around for understanding, smiles That's my fun fact of the day

Vojtek Wartooth |

Vojtek feels badly for snapping at Kappi earlier about the tracking, but the boy had succeeded at opening the box, where brute force might have damaged some of the valuables inside, or scattered them in the snow to be lost until a thaw.
Vojtek walks over to him and in his rough way offers an apology. Good work on that box Kappi, I think you've really got some skill there.
Grandfather never showered him with praise, but Vojtek knew from experience that a kind word of encouragement could really make a difference. He hoped Kappi would forget his earlier impatience.
