Eldon Appleton |
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (1) + 13 = 14
"Huh? What?" Eldon looks around. There's no one else left outside, so he hurries after the others.
Once he's up to speed Eldon, with some aid from Kawrock, tries to figure out what kind of creature's flying outside.
Knowledge (Planes): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
GM SpiderBeard |
You all start to hurry into the house, and from the skies you hear a great shriek that echoes over the manor and surrounding fens.
Something is coming.
How far are you heading into the house? Are you watching outside to see what shows up or hiding under a blankie?
Arval Beyondane |
Arval retreats into the bedroom, staying a few feet away from the walls. He holds up his shield to defend from any attacks.
"Where is it coming from?"
Total defense AC: 34
Wren the FeatherMage |
Wren continues to cower downstairs, floating near the second level and waiting for instructions and/or descriptions of the flying beast.
"Tell me what it looks like and I'll be right there. I'm sure I will and not out the back door at all...nope."
Wren looks out the window to see what she can see. She makes sure the doors to her left are open.
Vladlena |
something bad and rather angry is coming. she says, renewing her shield spell. maybe we should move outside to face it
GM SpiderBeard |
Everyone bolts into the bedroom, well down from the stairs. The cry echoes again, this time louder. As you wait, the sound of heavy wings comes from the outside of the house. The wings do not fade off into the distance, though. From the clues you've seen so far, the occupants of this house were probably summoning things they should not have, and now Something is circling the house.
I have you all in the bedroom. Let me know next actions - like if you want to peer out windows, go back up, hit the ground floor, etc. The house is cleared at this point.
Vladlena |
Lena starts heading down stairs.
if we stay here, we'll be trapped. We need to get clear and get rid of whatever it is.
She pauses.
could it be a dragon? I've never seen one of those before.
She continues down stairs.
Wren the FeatherMage |
"If you think we saw a dragon, we should stay spread out!"
Wren squawks with annoyance as others follow her into her safe area, surprising her from behind as she was staring out the windows. She retreats further, down to the first floor in the domed atrium. She is about 5' off the ground, her wand at the ready.
Arval Beyondane |
Arval moves to the door of the room and peers through a crack. Seeing nothing he moves into the sitting room area. Once he sees the giant creature he yelps and moves as quickly as possible to the hallway door.
"That's not a bird! That's not a bird! DRAGON!!!"
He yells as he makes his way through the building. Though he has never seen a drago nbefore he is convinced this should be one.
Vladlena |
Arval, stop panicking. It could be something else.
Lena move to the front door, and waits.
Although it might be worse, of course
Eldon Appleton |
1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
Eldon sneaks up to the window and takes a careful peek outside. He'll try to identify the horrid creature he sees there
Knowledge (Whatever's required): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
GM SpiderBeard |
Okay, so we're working with two maps here, and I have duplicates of all of you. Lemme know where you are on the map and delete your double. However, no combat yet, so it's all okay. Kawrock and Wren are in the centre area so don't see the baddie yet.
You all head downstairs and position yourselves in various protected areas, or staring out of windows excitedly. As you do so, you see the creature swoop down. It is winged and whirring, larger than an elephant with a head like a horse. Unlike any bird or bat you have ever seen.
Lena's Will Save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
Eldon's Will Save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Arval's Will Save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Whiskeyjacks' Will Save: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31
Sanity: 1d4 ⇒ 2
The strangeness of this creature sends poor Arval's mind reeling! The rest of you manage to comprehend it. The creature shrieks as it sees you at the windows, and slams itself into the side of the house. The entire structure shakes, but it does not attempt to enter. It continues to circle the structure.
Arval takes 2 points of sanity damage!
Wren the FeatherMage |
Is there no knowledge check possible? Wren has done/seen some pretty weird things during her years...
Wren remains indoors, trying to figure out what is going on.
GM SpiderBeard |
Whoops! Yeah. In retrospect the Lovercraftian baddies would be more fun with no knowledge checks but that ship has sailed. Knowledge: Arcana please.
Vladlena |
poor arval. He's for the asylum, methinks
know arcana: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
Vladlena |
Lena grins.
Fire purifies, and that thing needs to go. let's swat it out of the sky with fireballs. Wren, get your feathered backside here. We need to burn that thing.
She looks at whiskyjack. can you and arval shield us from that thing. Once we've gathered, both of you head out, and we'll follow. We'll strike it on the wing, and finish it when it lands to attack.
Lena looks more closely at the human fighter. er, arval, are you ok? You up to this?
Wren the FeatherMage |
1d20 + 18 ⇒ (20) + 18 = 38 Know (Arcana) !!!
"Oh, *that* thing!? Of course!!" Wren catches sight of the creature and recalls a peyote infused study session she attended with a few druids and satyrs that quickly devolved into...
"That's a ..." Wren squawks, offering some detail that others might find interesting. DRs? Weaknesses? Special attacks? SR?
GM SpiderBeard |
Wren knows this beast to be the infamous Shantak. Enormous magical flying creatures with horse's heads who need no air, and can in fact travel beyond the reach of Golarion itself and into the stars, or to other planes. They are immune to cold and disease, but do not have any particular attacks beyond their bite and claw. Wren also knows that although they are dangerous, they are certainly not impossible foes.
The shantak continues to circle around the house, letting out the occasional cry. Now that it is here, it is very intent on staying here.
Eldon Appleton |
Eldon quietly retreats back to the central room with the stone pillars.
Bluff: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
"I think this is a perfect chance to see how much you've improved since I became your mentor. Good luck!"
Wren the FeatherMage |
Wren readies a few magic spells that she hopes will work and is ready to go out and battle the beast. And what she really means is that she is ready to sling spells from the safety of the house while others go to fight the beast.
"I can also save some of us...bending time and space to get some of us far away from his house so we might sneak away. Whatever works," Wren offers a Dimension Door if people want to try to escape. She can move herself and two others well out of sight of the house and beast.
Arval Beyondane |
Well... That's down to 7 sanity points... I purposely chose not to take any actions, seeing it would fit the situation :)
Arval's eyes look a bit nuts as the creature bangs into the house. He remains very very still as he tries to think of something to do.
Dragon... It's a dragon... Definitely a dragon...
GM SpiderBeard |
I'm here, just plot out and explain your plan precisely. If you're gonna lob spells from inside, roll 'em.
Vladlena |
If we can target the beastie from inside, we salvo a set of fireballs, otherwise we kick open the doors exit the building and fireball it then.
fireball: 9d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 2, 6, 4, 6, 3, 5, 3) = 35 DC20 reflex for half damage
Wren the FeatherMage |
Wren has two hand-cast magic missiles to offer at the flying beast, each at a range of 240 ft. She will snipe at it from an open window when others are ready.
5d4 + 5 ⇒ (3, 1, 2, 2, 3) + 5 = 16 force damage, round 1
Whiskeyjack Dunaldthal |
"Tha' dinnae be soundin' like a good thing a' all. Wha' were these fools doin' playin' wit' a creature like tha'?"
"I be runnin' shor' o' offensive spells after me encounter wit' th' cleric o' Dagon. Bu' I ken be goin' on th' defnsive while ye lo' be castin' yours."
Whiskeyjack moved over to Lena and cast a spell on her. Immediately a glowing blue translucent shield hovered over her, clearly bearing the symbol of Angradd on it.
Casting Shield of Faith. +3 deflection AC for 9 minutes
Vladlena |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Lena grins at the solid dwarf. thanks Whiskeyjack. She quotes an old dwarven proverb she likes
GM SpiderBeard |
Sorry for the delays guys, back in business!
Reflex: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20
Reflex: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15
The shantak pinwheels through the sky two fireballs goes off, scorching it, and a magic missile thuds into it for good measure. The spells seriously harm the creature, and it roars, taking off before a 'thud' indicates it has alighted on the widow's walk up above. Unable to charge into the house, and without any real means of attacking you, it seems content to wait you out.
Vladlena |
Lena says scorched it! Time to finish it! Lets go!
Lena opens the door to the house, hopefully for the fighters to precede her. If she sees the beastie, she'll magic missile it.
magic missile: 5d4 + 5 ⇒ (2, 4, 3, 2, 1) + 5 = 17 just in case
Wren the FeatherMage |
Wren flies to a place away from the creature but where she can see it, and offers another hand-cast magic missile.
5d4 + 5 ⇒ (3, 4, 3, 3, 1) + 5 = 19 force damage
GM SpiderBeard |
1. I'm going to largely use theatre of the mind here, but will have tokens on the map for reference. Too many different maps to jump around.
2. Initiative starts now, triggered by your move actions going outside.
Shantak: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Arval: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Kawrock: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Eldon: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Whiskeyjack: 1d20 ⇒ 18
Lena: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Wren: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Attack: 1d20 + 27 ⇒ (15) + 27 = 42
Bite Power Attack: 1d20 + 19 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 19 - 2 = 23 Damage: 2d6 + 14 ⇒ (1, 3) + 14 = 18
People start to charge outside, and that gets the Shantak into the fight as it finally has a target. Whiskeyjack enchants Lena, who runs out to try to get some line of sight on the Shantak. Wren is more active, and smashes through a flimsy window to fire off a missile.
The Shantak, who had been preparing to spot a foe, then acts and dives down at bright, shiny Kawrock with a swooping attack. Kawrock is rocked by the bite, and the Shantak flies up to 30' above the ground.
Wren
Lena
Kawrock
----
Shantak

Whiskeyjack
Arval
Eldon
Whew. Everyone is up. The ground floor map is also accurate, with the Shantak at 30' up.
Vladlena |
Lena fire balls it again.
Roast dragon on the menu. Don't hide in the building, guys, come out and play.
fireball: 9d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 3, 4, 1, 4, 6, 6, 2) = 32 DC 20 reflex for half.
Wren the FeatherMage |
Round 1, Init 14
Wren flies to a place away from the creature but where she can see it, and offers another hand-cast magic missile.
5d4+5 force damage = 19 damage
Wren then floats out of sight.
GM SpiderBeard |
Reflex: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22
Lena continues to pummel the Shantak with fireballs while Kawrock follows up with a firebolt of his own. It is grievously injured, but stays in the fight, making weird kaaarooo sounds as it goes for a target.
Eldon and Whiskeyjack are up!
Eldon Appleton |
Eldon moves over to the door and nods appreciatively. "You're handling this very well, my dear pupils. Go on and finish it."
He frowns at Arval. "You're not doing much, are you? Go on. Get out there and help your friends."
Whiskeyjack Dunaldthal |
"Aye, th' wee one has i' righ'. Keep on pummelin' i' an' well be quick t' be takin' i' down."
Whiskeyjack moved to stay near Lena, and kep his shield up. All the while he held his hammer ready to follow his own advice.
Whiskey rushes forward to deliver a single telling blow with his warhammer.

Grab: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (10) + 25 = 35
Reeling from the incredible damage it has taken, the shantak decides to get something for its efforts, and reaches into the open front doors with its huge beak, and snatches up Lena! It passes the tiny halfling to a claw before it takes off into the sky with her!
Everyone is up! Lena has been grabbed, takes 15 damage, and is now 55' in the air!
Vladlena |
Ulp! Hey I'm flying.
Lena wakes up to the fact that she is in the air, in the claws of a nasty beast
Little help guys
She stabs at the beastie with her dagger
dagger: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
damage: 1d3 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
[ooc]you know, I think this is the first melee attack lena has ever done in the adventure path. And an excellent roll. I wonder if it hit.
Also did whiskeyjack hit it? He had a readied action primed, and was next to me.[/dice]
Wren the FeatherMage |
Round 2, Init 11
Wren flies closer, worry in her face. It feels like she wants to yell something, seeing Lena in the beast's mouth. She wants to really YELL something, something very important. But she doesn't because she doesn't feel the monster would really understand the importance of what she needs to explain.
WAIT! YOU GOT THE WRONG ONE!! ELDON...WAS RIGHT THERE!! DIDN'T YOU WANT HIM INSTEAD!
Unable to communicate, she fires her wand at the beast as she floats after the quickly flying beast.
4d4 + 4 ⇒ (1, 4, 2, 3) + 4 = 14 force damage.

Eldon Appleton |
"Hmm, looks like I'll have to help after all."
Eldon moves out in the open and weaves his hands dramatically, casting a spell. A brief moment later, the shantak's surrounded by a massive cage.
Silent Image. DC Will 15 to disbelief upon interaction.
GM SpiderBeard |
Whoops, thanks for catching that. He did! It had a shred of hp left. well, until...
The shantak takes a vicious whack on the beak as it grabs Lena, and very, very wobbly it takes off into the sky with her. She twists and lunges up with her dagger, exploiting an existing wound and burying her dagger deep into it.
Then, suddenly, she's surrounded by a cage.
Then the shantak takes another magic missile.
And then it falls.
Falling Damage: 5d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 1, 6, 2) = 18
The shantak, with Lena, plummet to the ground below. The creature snaps its neck upon impact and Lena manages to crawl out of the wreckage a little worse for wear, but still in one piece.
End of Combat
With the extraplanar creature successfully defended, you have cleared out the house and its denizens. Unfortunately, there is no sign of the black rider and the undoubtedly delicious Sausage Effigy.
That said, Kawrock did notice back in the house that one of the fleeing slugspawn left a trail which lead towards one of the menhirs in the central chamber.
Eldon Appleton |
"It's a good thing I helped you out before something bad happened. I guess you'll have to prove yourselves some other time, my dear pupils. For now, it seems you still need my guidance."
Eldon turns to Kawrock. "what did you say, one of the fleeing slugspawn left a trail which lead towards one of the menhirs in the central chamber? Why, yes, of course I'd noticed that."
"Let us inspect the menhir in question. I expect there's a hidden space beneath where we'll not only find the slugspawn, but also the black rider."
Eldon waits for Kawrock to lead the way, considering he actually doesn't know which menhir is the menhir in question. He then inspects the menhir for secret stuff.
