I barely even notice anymore when someone calls me by the wrong gender, the wrong name...I've spent entirely too much time in online games and forums. :)

So many times in my IRL group, we've talked about how there's just really not any good places to grow up in Golarion...even the best places are just "meh, I bet that'd be ok" instead of "oh gods, I'm so sorry". (And yet his character this round ended up being from Galt. I think that even beats out Nidal for "worst places to have to grow up". :) )

@Everyone - Well, I think we've slowed down enough on new submissions that I'm going to go ahead and move up the end of recruitment a bit, to 0600 GMT on Saturday, October 10. Feel free to submit new characters or make tweaks to your already submitted characters up until then. I'll take the weekend to make a decision and should have the party assembled by Monday.

Oh, crunch time! I still have to finish up my animal companion stat block but otherwise I don't think my application will change too drastically. I'm considering throwing in a second application to bolster my chances of making the cut, are you down with that Rennai? :)

@Bantam - I'm down. :) You'll only have one character get in, but I'm cool with people putting in multiples if they have more ideas.

I can't imagine playing two characters in one adventure so that suits me just fine :) I'm really happy with my submission for Van, but I figure another can't hurt just in case. Thanks Rennai!

Going to withdraw. Have a good game!

@Mowque - Good luck with Heart of the Jungle, too. It looked like you had a lot of good recruits.

Hello,

I'd like to express my interest with this character, a human medium from Ustalav. I am working on the character background and full stats as we speak. I'll post again to let you know when he's complete, everything will be in the profile.

@Rabano - Sounds good! I'll keep eyes out for your next post.

@GM Rennai: Everything is ready for your perusal, GM. Let me know if you would like to see any changes. I noted it in my profile, but I want to state again, that the posted character sheet shows Rabano channeling his Hierophant Spirit. If you would like to see him channeling a different spirit, I will be happy to provide you with that sheet.

Absalom, Andoran, Varisia, Rahadoun if you're not religious, Kyonin, the Dragon Empires by and large, Qadira, Osirion, Vudra, others I'm forgetting.... I mean, sure, they all have their problems, but the bulk of people there don't live under actively oppressive or evil governments, and they're not on the border of the Worldwound or anything, so I'd say those are probably 'the best' options. ;)

I updated Milo with background skills in sleight of hand, kn: nobility, and profession: gambler.

Yay, background skills! Xander is updated.

@Rabano - Perfect. :) I must admit, I'll have to do some reading up on the Medium to get a feel for it.

@Milo - But notice that "not under an actively oppressive or evil government" and "not on the edge of the portal to the Abyss spewing demons forth" are your highest recommendations. :P Nah, I agree, those are probably the friendliest ones, and there's even kinder towns in some of the more nasty countries. Side note: it's two background skill ranks per level - I think you may have too many.

@Xander - Thanks! I happen to enjoy background skills too.

Two skill ranks x 4 levels = 8 skill ranks, no?

I already had some skill points in Kn Nobility and Sleight of Hand before I added background skills; that could be what's making it look like I have too many. But I added 4 to Profession: Gambler, 2 to Kn: Nobility, and 2 to SOH.

@Milo - Ohh, yeah, I didn't know you had ranks in it before. That's probably what's done it. Thanks for clearing that up. :)

No worries. :) Yeah, they're skills I wanted for him anyway, the background skills just makes them better.

The Exchange

Room for one more character? I'd like to try, never played by post before.

@ChuckH - We are still in recruitment. Generally, how play-by-post games work is:
1) The GM (that's me!) will post a recruitment thread detailing what to expect in the game - build information, posting expectations, etc. That's the first post of this thread.
2) Folks who are interested (that's you!) will create a character based on the information given in the recruitment thread, then either
a) post their character sheet directly in a forum post on the recruitment thread, or
b) create an alias in the My Account page with their character's name and an avatar, put the character sheet in that alias's profile, then post in the recruitment thread with that alias.
3) After recruitment is finished (which will be in about 43 hours), the GM will look through the characters submitted and put together a group from those characters submitted that they feel will bring a good mix of abilities and personalities to the table. They will then post in the recruitment thread the names of the characters chosen, and play will usually begin within a couple of days.

Unfortunately, the nature of the beast is that there tends to be more people interested in a game than there are spaces, so not everyone can make it in every time. But I'd definitely love to hear about any character ideas you have - go ahead and work on putting one together. Even if you just get a story and the basics of race/class, it gives me something to base a decision off of, and we can finish the full character sheet later if you're chosen.

Speaking of character sheets, if you'd like a fill-in-the-blank template, I've posted one in the second post of this thread, which you can feel free to use if it's helpful to you. There are also more comprehensive guides that others have posted - CampinCarl9127 put together a pretty good step-by-step guide and template.

My character was trained as a combat medic during the war. Now he was sent home with post traumatic stress disorder. He finished medical school and now wants to be a pathfinder as an adventuring doctor. He is a human cleric.

@ChuckH - Sounds cool. Do you know where he's from? Any ideas on domains or deities? The Archives of Nethys can be a good resource if you don't have access to all of the setting-specific books.

The Exchange

All I have is the core rulebook. I will read up and pick a god to worship. I'm from the streets of a large city. Always a trouble marker. The church was where I could live while I was homeless and was my refuge. As soon as I was old enough, I joined the army to see the world. And then the war broke out and I was sent to the front lines. I was given extensive training in medicine and surgery.

@ChuckH - Awesome, sounds like a good start. If you want some more ideas, maybe check out the city of Absalom as a hometown? It's one of the biggest cities in the world, and is also the headquarters of the Pathfinder Society. One more thing - do you have a name in mind for him?

The Exchange

His name is Chuck

@Chuck - Awesome, thanks. :)

Hi Chuck. If you're interested in how Play By Post works, click this link. It will take you to a beginner's guide I wrote up that should do a pretty good job explaining things.

Hope it helps. Welcome to the boards.

Thanks, Doomed. :)

Remember everyone, just under 24 hours until recruitment closes!

The Exchange

@ GM

Spoiler:
I've never made a 4th level character before. Would you be willing to help with the character sheet?

Chuck: Not to sound like an ass, but if this is your first PBP, may I suggest starting with a level 1 game, rather than a level 4?

The way PBPs work is that everybody applies for a limited spot in the party. By Evangeline's list, there's at least 10 other characters that Chuck will be 'in competition' with, just like for a job. If the GM helps you create your character, iiiit's a little like showing up to a hiring interview with other people who have completed their resumes, and coming in and asking the interviewer to help you write your resume, so to speak.

Even if the GM has the time and interest to help you do that, it kind of puts the GM in an awkward spot when it comes to character selection, because they've literally helped you build your character, and now they have to decide whether or not to let you into the game, when they had a hand in shaping your PC. They now have a vested interest in letting you in, and would feel a bit like an ass if they turned you down after collaborating with you on your sheet.

Again, not trying to be an ass, or to dissuade you from trying out for PBPs. I would suggest that you either a) ask someone NOT the GM for help in character creation, and/or b) apply to PBPs that are more in the comfort zone of what you feel you can create and play.

eta
As an addendum: given that recruitment closes today, it's kind of short notice, but I could try and help you get a character sheet together. I'd need to know what sort of cleric you were trying to be, though.

Shogunto's profile is updated with his background and a small summary :)

@Chuck
if you've made a 1st level character, the process is the same when leveling up. You just need to know what extras are given at each level.
(3rd level feat, 4th level +1 to a stat)

The Exchange

OK, ill work on it this weekend

Deadline is tomorrow morning.....

And recruitment is now closed! Thanks to everyone for your interest. I'll be reviewing characters tonight, and will have a decision within the next 24 hours or so. Thanks again, all!

Update: I've sent questions out to a few folks via private message. Also, I'd like to thank everyone for their interest - I've got a lot of wonderful submissions to choose from. :)

About 3 hours to go......

ticktockticktocktick...

I'm starting this post a whole four minutes ahead of when I said 24 hours, thank you very much...:P

Time to announce our group of intrepid adventurers, on their way to the town of Karpad in Nidal at the behest of Countess Natalya Tiboros to look into the well-being of her daughter Anya:

Xander Ravencourt
Milovic Draznoi
Titania Evangeline SnowFell
Vandrare The Wretched
Kinvara Doone
Shogunto Heineous

The discussion thread will be linked in a moment for the fortunate chosen to join in, and I should have the first gameplay post up by morning.

For those who didn't make it this time, don't lose heart - it was a tough decision all around, and I saw a lot of promise in all the submissions. I hope that someday we shall meet again.

In thunder, lightning, or in rain? When the hurly-burly's done, when the battle's lost and won...

The Exchange

Have a good game!

Thanks for the opportunity Rennai! And thanks to everyone else who applied for keeping me on my toes, there were some really well written submissions!
