Game Master Peachbottom

Chapter Six: Crown of Fangs
Part Three: Legacy of Blood

Charisma Rerolls: A PC can spend a Harrow Point to reroll a Charisma-based check. She must abide by the new result (although if she has additional Harrow Points remaining, she can use them to attempt additional rerolls).

Destiny Shall Not Be Denied: A PC can spend a Harrow Point as an immediate action to force the GM to reroll a d20 roll. She must abide by the new result (although if she has additional Harrow Points remaining, she can use them to force additional rerolls).

Psychic Wrath: A PC with levels in a class that grants bonus spells based on her Charisma score can spend a Harrow Point to increase the power of a spell from that class’s spell list as she casts it. She increases the spell’s DC by 2 and gains a +4 bonus on caster level checks to overcome spell resistance and a +2 bonus on attack rolls for that spell.

Roll Card: Gain a +2 bonus on all Charisma-based checks. In addition, he treats his caster level as if it were 1 higher when casting spells gained from a class that grants bonus spells based on his Charisma score.

The marriage? Oh Sebastion! It was in the cards!

Ayako gets 3 Harrow Points.

Iolana gets 4 Harrow Points.

Sebastian gets 3 Harrow Points.

Tyrandro gets 1 Harrow Point. Sad trombone.

The uses for the Harrow Points in this chapter are:

Brutal Strike: A PC can spend a Harrow Point to gain a +5 bonus on damage rolls with all melee or natural weapons for the duration of one combat. Alternatively, brutal strike allows the PC to ignore an object’s hardness for 1 round.

Mighty Thews: A PC can spend a Harrow Point to be treated as a creature one size category larger than normal for the purposes of attempting grapple combat maneuver checks, wielding weapons, lifting heavy objects, and determining whether a hungry monster can swallow her whole; this adjustment lasts for one encounter (but no more than 10 minutes).

Strength Rerolls: A PC can spend a Harrow Point to reroll a Strength-based check. She must abide by the new result (although if she has additional Harrow Points remaining, she can use them to attempt additional rerolls).

The Chosen
When a PC whose player drew one of the following nine cards during the Choosing reaches the corresponding encounter in “A History of Ashes,” she gains a +2 bonus on all Strength-based checks and an additional +4 bonus on grapple combat maneuver checks and Strength checks to break objects.

I will update the header with this new information when I get the chance. Maybe tomorrow. Writing this Harrow readings takes a long time. I'm exhausted.

Whew that would take a lot out of a person. I have a hard time updating just the initiative turns. Takes me forever to make sure I got everything captured correctly.

I'll give Sebastian a little longer to post before I continue on.

Sorry everybody! Temporary internet problems at the worst time.

GM, what do you think about the Vigilante class for Sebastian's level 9? It seems like a good time to take it; at the same time, I'm not sure it actually grants a whole lot that would see any use in this game. Even after we get back to Korvosa in another book or so, it doesn't really seem like Sebastian's social identity would be all that welcome.

Male Human Infiltrator/Divine Marksman (15) - Init +8, HP132, F+16, R+22, W+13/+15CC (incl IW), AC 30/20/22 Perc +22/28

Just my 2c worth, even though I wasn't asked.

The typical vigilante is someone like Batman, Zorro or Ironman (first movie, before the press conference) who are public figures that try to look uninvolved but fight for a cause out of sight. And then they go with the mask because the enemy is stronger.

But you're not the rich and type walking with nobility to start with.

And in the AP you are openly fighting a war against evil with your real persona. Once we are level 20 and kick the queens ass save the queen from being possessed by evil, you have to ask yourself, if you want to do that as Black Jack (with all involved already knowing who you are). Or if you are going Tony Stark: "The truth is... I'm Iron Man"

Tyrandro is playing vigilante stuff at the moment with a very flimsy mask which consists only of a false name. But once he gets that level of power you can be sure that he is going to rub that in with all those who annoy him instead of hiding who he is.

Also once too many know who Black Jack really is, he will eventually die with the person.

M Human Swashbuckler 12 | Init +9 | Percp +9 | HP 93/93 | AC 27| Fort +9, Ref +16, Wil +6 |

Yeah, that's similar to my thoughts as well. At this place in the campaign, it doesn't really make any sense to play Vigilante. I think I'm just going to keep going Swashbuckler.

Male Human Infiltrator/Divine Marksman (15) - Init +8, HP132, F+16, R+22, W+13/+15CC (incl IW), AC 30/20/22 Perc +22/28

Put a few ranks into bluff and disguise and you're set to be one. No need for the other class. And if a minor injustice shows that can be fixed with some witty words and a blade, nothing will hinder you to do so while wearing a mask.

I'm pretty sure Vencarlo is no vigilante - class wise. He is much too old school for that.

M Human Swashbuckler 12 | Init +9 | Percp +9 | HP 93/93 | AC 27| Fort +9, Ref +16, Wil +6 |

Actually, I think he's been updated to Vigilante in the new edition, but I could be wrong.

Vencarlo was plain Fighter in the original adventure path. In the anniversary addition he was changed to vigilante. The concept is good but like Tyrandro mentioned you'll probably get less use out of the class than worthwhile. You really don't return to Korvosan again until the final chapter 6. In the original version at least you don't return, but I think in the anniversary edition they added an excursion back at some point. Something to do with that Longacre House I believe. But I haven't read the new information fully yet. I think Sebastian would be best off just continuing with swashbuckler.

Swashbuckler as well would work just as well. :)

You're right. I was wrongly assuming Ayako could create water.
But we have the ability to cast light in the party and Tyrandro can get darkvision for a limited time.

But you're definitely right about the weapons. Let me go back to the shop...

Get swords for your feet

You can get leather barding for the pig if you want.

Sorry, next post will have to wait till tomorrow. It's a little long and I'm falling asleep.

One of the things I really like about this campaign is that it revisits a lot of characters so you can really develop them.

You might have missed it, but I already bought 400 Arrows.

Another night I'm just going to crash. Went to Renaissance fair all day. Two friends proposed and got engaged so we went out afterwards.

How bad can it be? I'll just leave this here for now.

The burning plains of the Storval Plateau known as the Cinderlands are perhaps the most inhospitable location in all of Varisia. Nearly a desert, the region is highly volcanic with black blizzards known as emberstorms that race across the land, frequent brush fires in the grasslands, and deadly eruptions of poisonous gas.

M Human Swashbuckler 12 | Init +9 | Percp +9 | HP 93/93 | AC 27| Fort +9, Ref +16, Wil +6 |

Sebastian is a master of the cosmic understatement. It's his whole purpose, really.

Sounds like you had a great time! We don't have roasted turkey legs in Cameroon. But we do have turkeys... Congrats to your friends! Is that one happy couple or two?

One couple. Two friends we went with.

Nothing a little Resist Fire can't cure.

Ok, what to sell in Kaer Maga?

No interested in anything in the outright 'sell' column. I might like the Amulet of Natural Armor+1

Sebastion should have first look over Vencarlo's things

Male Human Infiltrator/Divine Marksman (15) - Init +8, HP132, F+16, R+22, W+13/+15CC (incl IW), AC 30/20/22 Perc +22/28

Added the ring of evasion to the things to sell.

Also I would take the ring of chameleon power.

M Human Swashbuckler 12 | Init +9 | Percp +9 | HP 93/93 | AC 27| Fort +9, Ref +16, Wil +6 |

I like the idea of keeping the Blackjack equipment as a separate kit and as fanboy fodder, but a lot of Sebastian's stuff is already better. The rapier especially is really nice, but Keen doesn't stack with my class ability, so it's not doing anything for me. The equipment itself hasn't been established as being iconic, so I'm sure most if it's just in my head.

The amulet of natural armor +1 looks like it's worth claiming, and there's something very stylish about the lightning javelin. Sebastian's silver dagger was a rakshasha spy and has been killed. Out of context, that sentence strikes me as hilarious.

Kaer Maga's going to be a great place to sell our gonzo armory. We have so much weird crap on us! I can't help but think that trying to sell the Mask of the Mantis will get us found real quick, though.

Tyrandro, you're right, Sebastian should have just asked. I was tired, and lately my writing has gotten lazy(-ier). I need to work on tightening things up.

Male Human Infiltrator/Divine Marksman (15) - Init +8, HP132, F+16, R+22, W+13/+15CC (incl IW), AC 30/20/22 Perc +22/28

I was just stating that you should have asked, because of the chance to establish Tyrandro as an kind of arrogant Chelaxian. It might be totally in Character for Sebastian not to ask.

But Iolana jumped in to provide the opportunity :D

Male Human Infiltrator/Divine Marksman (15) - Init +8, HP132, F+16, R+22, W+13/+15CC (incl IW), AC 30/20/22 Perc +22/28

Also you write very thought through posts covering a lot. Even with the ones you think of as lazy. At least in my view.

M Human Swashbuckler 12 | Init +9 | Percp +9 | HP 93/93 | AC 27| Fort +9, Ref +16, Wil +6 |

Thank you, I appreciate that. They wouldn't need to be if I could manage to post during the developments instead of at the end XD Thanks for coming to the rescue, Iolana!

If you're looking for opportunities to play up the arrogant Chelaxian, I would happily be your co-conspirator. I've been hesitant lately to play up too much friction between Sebastian and Tyrandro because I was afraid of character friction becoming player friction. I think that's mostly a result of local real-life stresses bleeding over into other areas, and maybe I should have mentioned it sooner.

Male Human Infiltrator/Divine Marksman (15) - Init +8, HP132, F+16, R+22, W+13/+15CC (incl IW), AC 30/20/22 Perc +22/28

You won't manage to hit me by hitting Tyrandro (That's not meant as a challenge ;). Nothing is more boring than the adventuring party where all are one heart and soul and have no life besides saving the world as laid out before them by the book.

The only real danger in this is, if one manages to make so big an ass of him- or herself that it would split the party in game. But Tyrandro has a Teflon character. So even that is unlikely.

Ayako will claim the Amulet of Natural Armor then.

You should keep the ring of evasion. The Arkonas have no more part in this campaign and won't bother you for having it.

Or put it somewhere amusing.

Assuming you are keeping the ring of evasion, but feel free to confirm if you want to sell, I totaled up the rest of the items currently marked sell on the treasure sheet.

You each will receive 9,207 gold, 6 silver, and 3 copper.

You should be able to buy something nice with that if you wish. Kaer Maga is a large enough city that you can find most items within your current spending limit without issue. Once you leave Kaer Maga, there will be no large cities to buy and sell from in the Cinderlands, but you can of course return to Kaer Maga to do so if you need to.

Please confirm that everything looks okay, because I'm going to clean up the treasure sheet and remove the sold items soon.

Male Human Infiltrator/Divine Marksman (15) - Init +8, HP132, F+16, R+22, W+13/+15CC (incl IW), AC 30/20/22 Perc +22/28

Somehow the formulas on the sheet get messed up every now and then. I corrected the sum and set the ring of evasion to 0 to leave it out of the calculation. This leads to a value of 33999.5gp sold for half 16999.75gp

I think my sum already excluded the ring but I can double check your math later. I'm on my phone now. Also the prices on the spreadsheet are already the sell price. It doesn't need to be halved. I divided the sum by 4 to give you each an amount.

Great job typing

I'm all for keeping the ring. Who gets to keep it? Is that something Sebastian or Tyrando can use. I'm good with Iolana having it, but if someone can use it better I'm all for them having it.

Male Human Infiltrator/Divine Marksman (15) - Init +8, HP132, F+16, R+22, W+13/+15CC (incl IW), AC 30/20/22 Perc +22/28

As we're level 9 now, I have evasion myself :)
Does that stack with the ring for improved evasion? No, seriously - someone with a decent reflex save and a lack of HP should take it -> Iolana.

In the sheet the last item had in the last column the same price as the ring of evasion. I copied the multiply formula from above to correct that and made a sum over all items in the sell table. To exclude the ring from that I set the amount of rings of evasion to 0. Changing the division to 2 was an error then, but I have no access to google docs from here so I can't correct it now.

Evasion allows you to use the Evasion feat that lets you avoid damage from AoE stuff on a reflex check. Best for those with good reflex saves

I am really glad we made it through the Halflight Path without an encounter.

In the Shattered Start three Seugathis break through one of these brick walls. After a good dose of mind fog and confusion the party stood around whacking themselves.

Which reminds me: Can I have a ring of protection from evil? There is no such item listed in the books. But in principle it is like a ring of feather falling in spell level. And it is only a little bit more powerful than a ring of feather falling as it would deny any charm and compulsion magic from evil casters :)

Male Human Infiltrator/Divine Marksman (15) - Init +8, HP132, F+16, R+22, W+13/+15CC (incl IW), AC 30/20/22 Perc +22/28

If we have to stay in Kaer Maga I'd like this establishment (also in Hospice):

Canary House: The epitome of class, this five-story
inn and bistro contains the most expensive and exclusive
accommodations in town—an irresistible experience
for those with means, and a simultaneously opulent
and discreet place for the covert assignations of the
wealthy. So successful is the proprietor, Alaeh A’kaan (N
male half-elf expert 4), that he can afford to turn away
any amount of money if he doesn’t like the look of a
guest, and despite his comparatively lowly position as
an innkeeper, numerous wealthy merchants and wouldbe
aristocrats curry his favor. Inside Canary House,
pheasant is a specialty of the kitchen’s famed culinary
artistes and the walls are elegantly decorated in avian
themes representing the birds of A’kaan’s native Garund,
yet these are not what give the inn its name. Rather, the
moniker comes from his famed Songbirds—slave girls
chosen for their talent and trained from the time they
could speak to sing in unbelievable harmonies, each word
a chord with a dozen voices spanning several octaves.
These girls, while carefully cared for as the investment
they are, swing from trapeze perches in gilded cages,
and lest the audience be fooled by their elegance, thin
chains around their ankles provide a constant reminder
that the golden bars are still very real.

Male Human Infiltrator/Divine Marksman (15) - Init +8, HP132, F+16, R+22, W+13/+15CC (incl IW), AC 30/20/22 Perc +22/28

As for the shopping.
Depending on the amount of money we finally have available I'd like to purchase:
- Bracers of Falcon's Aim -> 4000gp
- Adaptive on the bow (works for every strength mod of the wielder) -> 1000gp
- corrosive (+1d6 Acid Damage /+1 bonus price) on the bow -> +6000gp
(Assuming there is no Ring of Protection from Evil found at the magic flea market)

The ring of protection from evil would be too powerful. It is not available. But everything else Tyrandro wants above is fine and available. You can also stay at the Canary House if you wish. Or with Ayako's diplomacy roll, the innkeeper at the Sorry Excuse will let you stay for coppers. (Don't worry about the cost).

I haven't read Shattered Star yet. I'm getting this information from the Kaer Maga information book, City of Strangers. Kaer Maga is outside the scope of the Curse of the Crimson Throne adventure path. But I'm fleshing it out a little more than just a non-descript sell point.
