Ehren reluctantly takes up guard duty, watching over the cultists as Isilme confers with Osfirth. Given a moment of respite, he takes out his healing wand and tends to his own wounds, minor as they were. Though the majority of them close up without issue, he finds little relief; the damage his body had endured was less than half of what was truly ailing him. Obviously, knowing that they had saved Silvershore filled his heart with joy, but he found the feeling difficult to savor. He glances again at Külə, nearly shuddering at the mere memory of the pain he had felt. Combined with all the constant flying and fighting, it all left him feeling exhausted.

He stands there, listening to Hinagiku's speech numbly, wondering whether any of the cultists held even an ounce of genuine remorse within their hearts. For all the good it would do them.

Anevia, though not expressly requested to go inside or stay outside, sticks with Ehren and the others, and talks, not directing her talking towards anyone in particular.

"I mean it, though. Even beyond this right now.. it's something that needs to be discussed in more detail. I'm pretty sure cultists would be outright executed without a trial - it's clear they're guilty of aiding the demons - but Bishop's already not doing that. There's a reason they're normally executed on the spot - their lives take resources that could instead be used for our guys, yeah? So it's going to hurt morale to keep the bad guys alive, and feed them our food, especially if we start running out of food. But... killing them's the easy way out. Easy doesn't make it right. Might even be making more problems by drawing a hard line. The bad guys would just fight to the death more, leaving us with more dead, too." Anevia shrugs a little.

"Thing is, I don't really care about the law of the land. More about doing what's right. So... what do you lot think is right? I can say, personally, that without a bit of mercy, tolerance, and love... well, I might not be around at all. So I've sorta got a vested interest in helping everyone I can, but it's going to be scary to try that route."

Xanderghul stays outside as requested, bummed to be left out of the loop but knowing that he's not being included in diplomacy for a reason. He sidles up to Ehren, elbowing him in the rib with an elbow. "Running out of spells, am I right?" He smiles.

When Anevia begins to talk, Xanderghul shrugs. "Don't get me wrong... I get that your souls are important and all. I really do. Good people are good for the world. My first priority will always be me and mine, though, and you're all mine. Anything that endangers us or makes us less likely to finish the mission is something I will argue against."

Ehren grins at Xanderghul wryly, but it quickly reverts to a frown as Anevia speaks.

"Sparing lives is easy," the druid says after a moment of thought, his eyes never leaving the prisoners. "Saving them is harder. Especially when they must be saved from themselves. It is as you said. It takes mercy, tolerance, and love. Time and patience, as well. But in war, these things are all in short supply."

Hinagiku - actions vs thought:

There is evidence from the 11 Acts of Iomedae that a person can redeem themselves from horrible evil at the very last moment based on a change of heart, so I would believe that Pharasma would take into account the state a soul exists in when they die along with the actions they have committed across their lives.

"Ah! Ie wrth gwrs. Os gallwch chi aros am beth amser byr, byddwn yn neilltuo gwledd i Gorum gyfer ein buddugoliaeth," responds Osfirth to Valaria.

Hallit:
"Ah! Yes, of course. If you can wait a short while, we will be dedicating a feast to Gorum for our victory. "

----

Meanwhile, the cultists listen to Hinagiku's speech, watching as the army and heroes trickle away to just four watching a crowd of nearly thirty cultists in an open field. The reactions to the monk's sermon are mixed - some look terrified at the prospect of their likely imminent execution, others look bored and openly ignore her words. But a few, just a few, seem to actually listen.

One, a long-legged girl with wispy brown hair tilts her head, asking in a thick Varisian accent, "Master of Masters? What is this Master of Masters?"

Anevia:

Ehren sense motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Hinagiku sense motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Xanderghul sense motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Anevia sense motive: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20

The cultists seem restless - many are anxiously eyeing their weapons that are all still within arm's reach....

Xanderghul: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Hinagiku: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Anevia: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Cultist Troop: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21

But unfortunately, they move faster than you can react.

Surprise Round!

Seemingly alarmed by Hinagiku's dire prediction of their impending death, many of the cultists lunge for their weapons.

A few - four to be exact (including the wispy haired teenager) cower in place, their hands on their heads.

Only Anevia may participate in the surprise round.

Anevia fires off a quick shot, but misses the cultists. She then teleports towards the village and cries out, catching the attention of some of the villagers on the nearby outskirts of town, but Isilme, Valaria, Ayavah, and Külə are too far away to hear her.

Round 1!

About a dozen of the cultists stand and begin to flee, scattering off in all different directions. A dozen more surround Hinagiku, apparently intent on bringing her down. Though she can dodge many of the attacks, she is unable to dodge them all, and they manage to score a few stab wounds on her.

The rest, only a few, cower in place nearby.

Ehren sets his jaw, his expression a mixture of profound disappointment and barely restrained anger. Whether they were running away or attacking the person that tried to show them compassion, their actions spoke volumes about what lied in their hearts. He takes special note of the four that were staying out of the conflict, but as far as he was concerned, the rest were fair game. The druid hurries forward to support Hinagiku, shape-shifting in mid-stride. His body ripples and expands into that of a great bear covered with spike protrusions, which runs right into the crowd of belligerent cultists and lets out a loud roar.

Wild shaping into a dire bear and moving in to support Hinagiku.

Xanderghul rolls his eyes as the remaining cultists leap up to attack him and his allies. "Truly, what a bunch of rubes." he says disdainfully, taking a step away from the melee that Hinagiku had embroiled him. "Greedy, fearful, and just arrogant enough to think that the four of us won't be enough to kill them all."

He unslings his crossbow from its place, but instead of using it he idly waves a hand at the crowd of cultists. His last offensive spell, a familiar burst of light washes over the cultists who are attacking Hinagiku, rending their corrupted souls and blinding them with its light.

Anevia's shot powers through the cultists, while Xanderghul's blast kills and blinds many... including Hinagiku, but the monk is able to navigate using sound and her attunement with the land alone.

Just like Ehren, Hinagiku's first reaction was to take note of the cowering cultist. She hoped their motives for staying low were pure instead of part of a plan to receive mercy. Still, by staying still they would probably be given a second chance, whereas the ones attacking were sure to be executed... if they lived through the battle.

While fighting away the enemies, Hinagiku finds herself back to back with the bear that had become Ehren. Only once she is in this safe position does the monk truly start striking at the foes. She concentrates on punches, aiming a soft areas and purposefully avoiding to strike bones or vital organs: there was still part of her that hoped they could still be redeemed... if only moments before they were put to death.

The kellids start moving through the village yelling, "Mae'r carcharorion yn dianc! Mae'r carcharorion yn dianc!", loud enough for Isilme and Valaria to hear.

Hallit:
"The prisoners are escaping! The prisoners are escaping!"

Meanwhile, the other dozen cultists start sprinting through the snow, running in all different directions to make it difficult to chase them. However the snow makes tracking them a fairly trivial pursuit.

Three cultists remain quivering in the snow, having never reached for their weapons. Unfortunately, one of their number was killed in Xanderghul's blast.

Anevia purses her lips for just a moment, then begins firing off singular arrows towards the runners, not overly concerned with whether they landed on the ground or in an enemy. Either way, she'd retrieve them.

She couldn't really fault them for running - she'd been there, really. Running was a normal response. It meant they hadn't already lost hope, and weren't overcome with anger. The four - make that three - that were in front of them... she wasn't sure what to think of.

Isilme sighs as she hears the prisoners are making a break for it. It wasn't terribly surprising she supposed. So much for giving them a chance. "Looks like we are not getting a chace to rest, Val. We should go." She then turns to Külə, "Let us go chase down those fleeing. We cannot afford any of the cultists making it to the main army." Looking down and closing her eyes, she calls for Desna's blessing. "Lady Starsong, guide my steps and grant me swiftness in my travels." Giving Külə a pat on the shoulder, she grins, "Lets see if you can keep up!" and takes off towards where the prisoners had been.

"How are they escaping? Did Ehren not entrap them in thorns and wood?"

Külə snorts, his eyes closed. "You should have just killed them," he says gruffly, but he trots after her anyway, head held down.

Osfirth grabs his longbow and sets out. "'N annhymerus' anfon am Onsig a'i helwyr gorau. Ni fyddant yn dianc ni, gwaedu yn yr eira."

Hallit:
"I'll send for Onsig and his best hunters. They will not escape us, bleeding in the snow."

The three remaining conscious cultists obediently raise their hands... they are terrified, trembling slightly. One of the three, a rough looking older man, decides to take his chances and bolt, leaving only two remaining - a teenage girl with messy brown hair, and a man with a shaved head and many facial piercings.

The girl looks to Hinagiku, whispering, "Please, don't let them kill us. I don't want to die."

Anevia fires off four shots as the cultists flee into the distance, managing to fell one of the fleeing demon-worshippers, and injure another. Eventually they are too far and out of sight for her to continue shooting.

By this time, Ehren manages to catch up with the slowest cultist, over two-hundred feet away. He screams, alarmed at being chased by an enormous, savage looking bear, and gets ready to flee once more. Ehren - what do you do now?

By the time Isilme and Külə arrive, despite their enhanced speed, the cultists are well out of sight. (You can only run in a straight line, so travelling through town and navigating the barricades was still a significant amount of time) There are plenty of tracks to follow, though.

It's a mere DC 5 survival check to track the cultists, and it can be made untrained. However, you move at half your normal speed while following tracks (or at your normal speed with a –5 penalty on the check, or at up to twice your normal speed with a –20 penalty on the check). Your choice.

Xanderghul smiles, knowing that he had appeared competent and ready despite the fact that he had just used up his only remaining attack spell. It was all he had needed! Perhaps later in the day they could find a use for his two remaining spells and no other spells.

He walks into the battlefield, kicking weapons away from the two remaining cultists. He lets those that run run away. They'd be more likely to die than anything else, isolated and away from the resources of their army in hostile, frozen land. "Another tick towards practicality, though we all know hope and mercy never end," he murmurs. While he's out in among the dead cultists and everything, he spies the Commander's corpse, remembering that they never had checked it for interesting magic items... so he casts detect magic and begins to search the man.

With 60' move and my acrobatics score I can clear the barricades jumping (minimum jump is 27' long and hence 6.75' high), so I wouldn't be slowed down by the barricades at all if I am attempting to get outside town. Furthermore, as long as there is a single line of greater than 120' in a round's move, I can get the benefit of run, I just can't move more than whatever the greatest straight-line distance is in a single run. That means it really shouldn't be more than 1-2 rounds before I am back outside, and long before any of them are out of line of sight.

Isilme - Sure! So 1 round= 1 std: casting spell, 1 move: heading outside from the building you are in, 3 rounds = running across town (I'm being incredibly generous here, it's around 500' in a straight line from where you are to the edge of town where everyone else is). That's 4 rounds, meaning the cultists have made it 600' away across hilly terrain, scattering in all different directions, and are out of sight . You still need to make a survival check to follow.

I find it very hard to believe there isn't a straight line out of town in almost any direction in a small village as the density of buildings in small towns is lower than that of large ones. Third round should get me well outside the town. Additionally, in 4 rounds the cultists could only have made 480', not 600', unless somehow every last one of them somehow has the run feat, which is exceedingly unlikely. Finally, the cultists that were engaged with those in melee would have had to withdraw the first round or suffer AoO's, meaning they only managed 60' of travel on the first round.

Ehren: Scent makes the check a flat DC 10 modified only by time. In this case it would actually be harder to follow tracks by scent than sight, which makes sense given that it's pretty easy to see tracks in snow. Honestly it should probably be DC 0, 'cause anyone could follow tracks in fresh snow, especially with blood involved. :p

Survival: 1d20 ⇒ 18
Will find a set of tracks and take off running in their direction. The cultists are traveling in straight lines, so error is irrelevant as I only need to get within 200' of one in order to be able to see it.

Isilme - You are running at 50', unless your intention is to leave the unicorn behind. The cultists began running in Round 1. You did not hear them until Round 2. The cultists engaged in melee did not run. They are all dead or KO'd. The others did not enter AoO range.

After rubbing her eyes, Hinagiku is finally able to distinguish the two cultists in front of her. She looks down at them, her expression as peaceful as usual, with a glint of care and kindness in her eyes.

"I'll do what I can. But your desire to avoid more unnecessary bloodshed will be well looked upon." she simply answer before lifting her eyes from the two cultist and gazing upon the battlefield and the newly dead or unconscious tieflings.

When Onsig arrives, Hinagiku purposefully steps in front of the pierced man and the curly haired girl. However, her demeanor is not one of defiance or dominance, it is humble, peaceful, yet meaningful.

"Miss Isilme, be careful if you leave to chase them." she looks back at her proteges "I will stay here."

Hinagiku won't suggest it, but why not take the horses for the pursuit?

Ehren - As Isilme said, scent doesn't make tracking "easier", it gives a lower DC regardless of terrain. Which is very useful in difficult to track terrain, but not so much in a situation like this where it is very easy to begin with.

Ehren the dire bear sets off across the snow - between his highly developed sense of smell and the training he has received since he was young in tracking beasts through the wilds, he easily finds another fleeing cultist.

"Oh, gods. Oh, gods!!" whimpers the thin man with bright, grey eyes as the enormous bear gets closer and closer. Finally, he stops and turns. He brandishes his sword, voice trembling. "Get back, you beast! Don't get any closer!"

Külə gracefully clears the barricades behind Isilme and keeps pace with her as she runs across the snow. They sprint out across the snow - the cultists cannot run forever so they quickly catch up to one - a man with long copper-colored hair and glasses partially hiding a horrifically malformed face. He stops and turns to face Isilme and the unicorn, dropping his shortsword into the snow.

"Please. Please don't hurt me," he begs.

Külə raises his head to glare at the pathetic man. Isilme averts her eyes from his baleful gaze at the right moment, and the man stands firm.

The two remaining cultists seem relieved when Hinagiku stands up for them - and when the kellids pay them no heed.

The kellid hunters split up, each picking a set of tracks and heading out to follow them.

"Mae'n eich dewis, cyfaill. Ond naill ffordd neu'r llall, yr wyf yn gwybod y bydd yr un o'r fwycar gafr rhain yn byw i weld y dydd arall," says Onsig to Valaria, before heading out to trail his own prey.

Hallit:

They head out for some time, eventually coming across one of the veiled women, limping along in the snow and breathing heavily. Onsig speeds up, but when they reach within 100 feet, the woman raises a speckled hand, channeling arcane energies. "Stop!"

Xanderghul picks up Commander Hormond's bow. A valuable magic weapon, though the rest of the weapons and armor aren't terribly useful - the stoneplate was too heavy for any of the party, and none of their army would want to use it due to its demon-iconography. The weapons were just not unique or interesting enough.

Xanderghul looks down at the corpse of the Commander - riddled with arrows from Anevia, beaten by Hinagiku and pummeled by spells. He hadn't had a happy last few minutes. Xanderghul's mouth curls into a sneer as an image runs through his mind - a slimy, wet noise as his fingers push into the Commander's head, a fleshy pop as the Commander's eyes come out easily. A joke, because of the man's plate armor, but one that makes Xanderghul uncomfortable to think about. Uncertain where a thought that morbid might have come from, Xanderghul turns around and heads back towards the village, throwing his arm around Valaria's shoulder to guide her back towards the clan hall. "Take a rest, Valaria. You took on an army today, and we're always talking about mercy, right? Enough cultists will die screaming as they beg for mercy and run from us today. They don't need you to bloody your hands any more."

Xanderghul idly wonders whether any of the paladins worth caring about were any good with a bow, as he slings the thing around his shoulder.

Unfortunately for the whimpering cultist, Ehren pays his weapon no heed, closing in and attempting to maul him. We were perfectly willing to take you alive, but you'd rather die out here, alone and forgotten on a snowy tundra." Seeing as they had fled into multiple directions, he suspected that by now, someone else was tracking down the others. It was a joyless hunt.

Narrowly avoiding his gaze, Isilme sighs. Clearly it would take no small amount of work to get him through this desire for vengeance upon the cultists. "First things first, however," she thinks. Isilme reaches over, placing a hand in front of Külə to stop him. "You are right that he deserves no mercy. Once he has fallen to the ground and she is certain he has passed away, she flicks the blood off her blade, sheathes her weapon and turns to look at Külə. "I have lived a very long time Külə, perhaps a millenium... Certainly longer than I can even remember anymore. While the others are gone chasing their fleeing foes, Hinagiu simply stands with the two cultists who had surrendered. However, once Xanderghul leaves the battle field, it becomes clear that nothing more will happen on the outskirts of the town. She looks back down two her prisoners and extends a hand to help them up.

"May I know your name? I am Hinagiku, or Daisy in Taldan" she starts, battling the awkwardness of not being able to refer to someone with their name with the the awkwardness of formally introducing herself.

Her eyes widen as the bear morphs back to a man, but her culture is filled with tales of Green priests with the ability to shift into animal form, and so she is understanding.

"Nac oes, ond mae dau ohonom helwyr ar gyfer pob un ohonynt. Mae'n annhebygol y bydd unrhyw dianc. Roedd yn ffôl ohonynt i roi cynnig," she replies, placing her arrow back into her quiver, then turning in the direction of Silvershore.

Hallit:

"No, but there are two of us hunters for every one of them. It is unlikely any will escape. It was foolish of them to try."

"I shall be heading back now, to report my kill. Will you be coming along?"

Eventually Isilme, Valaria, and Ehren regroup back in front of Silvershore with Hinagiku. Ayavah runs back to Valaria's side (she had stayed back with Xanderghul, figuring she would just slow the swashbuckling tiefling down on her chase). Not willing to make the same mistake twice, Onsig and his hunters take the seven remaining cultists and bind them together using rope. They are placed under guard.

Osfirth approaches the heroes. "Dynion Onsig yn adrodd ar bob deuddeg olrhain yn marw. Rydym yn diolch i chi am eich cymorth wrth olrhain i lawr. Would you like to stay in Silvershore, or leave now to try and regroup with the main army? Once three agree, we will continue.
