The Kingdom of Talingarde – one of most noble, virtuous and peaceful nation in the known world. The royalty of this dominion has rescued a dispirited people from the brink of despair and darkness. They dealt with their enemies honorably and their allies faithfully. Talingarde is a paragon of the age, a bright shining city upon a hill. Yet the nation faces now its greatest test – YOU!

They condemned you for your wicked deeds. They branded you. They shipped you to the worst prison in the kingdom. The expect you to die in Branderscar. The do-gooders pray they’ll be rid of you.

The fools.
You have your wits, and a burning passion for revenge upon those who wronged you.
But no one has ever escaped from Branderscar prison.
This is where your story ends… or does it?

Welcome to “Way of the Wicked” – a campaign where the world needs saving from you.

You’ve saved the world plenty.
It’s time you walked the Way of the Wicked.

[See info under Campaign tab for further details]

Your commitment as a player:

1. You must be a daily poster. Preference will be given to those who show higher activity on the boards. I don’t care whether you’re a PbP veteran or new to the boards as long as you’re active. I fully expect to complete the campaign as quickly as the players set the pace for. See my commitment #3.
2. Players need to work together as a group for an enjoyable game.
3. Respectful communication among each other.
4. Interesting and enjoyable character development and interaction.
5. Players are expected to ROLE play, not ROLL play. I feed off of you, the player. Watching the player characters develop and interact is how a GM gets his enjoyment and a good group of players helps the story take a life of its own. Having said that, I don’t expect a flowery essay in each post but you should be able to write well and play your character well. If the limit of eloquence in your posts is “I swing my sword at the kobold”… let’s just say, your GM is very creative at finding ways to dispatch such annoyances. While we’re at it, be prepared to follow your alignments and motivations as you will be held accountable for your actions.

My commitment as a GM:

1. I will also try to post at least once a day. I am online quite often during the day (8am-4pm EST) and can move things along rather quickly during that time. On the weekends there will be less activity, but I will likely make at least 1-2 posts in the evenings, sometimes more.
2. I will keep things interesting and challenging within the scope of the story with an even balance between role playing and combat.
3. I will keep things moving rather than letting the plot stagnate. If a player fails to post within a reasonable amount of time without notifying the group that they will be unavailable, he/she will be NPC’ed, moved to inactive status, removed from the active game, replaced and/or all of the above. I refuse to let an inactive player ruin it for everyone else. I fully understand that life happens – all I ask is to be respectful and communicate beforehand if you are not going to be around.
4. I’m not a rules lawyer and I don’t review every roll and skill bonus. I expect you, the player to have accurate information on hand and roll accordingly. I will randomly audit the crunch and if you’re consistently making ‘mistakes’ in your skill bonuses, pet bonuses etc… you’re in for bad times.
5. I will try and keep all characters in the spotlight and give equal face time to each.

Character selection:

Depending on the applications received, I will be choosing 4-6 players to partake in this adventure. I will be picking players for the four main roles (melee combatant, arcane caster, healer, skill/trap-smith). If there are multiple good applicants, I may fill 2 other slots with support or backup characters. For the sake of variety, as stated in character creation guidelines below, my picks will ensure the group is comprised of all different classes.

Character Creation Guidelines :

1. Races allowed: Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Halfling, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, Human, Tiefling. No Exceptions to this rule. Ok, maybe one – I *may* let one goblin into the party if you come up with a decent enough background / backstory. Bear in mind that your race will have a direct bearing on how well you can or cannot perform in the campaign.
2. Books allowed: Core Pathfinder Book, Ultimate Magic, Ultimate Combat, Advanced Players Guide, Advanced Race Guide, Ultimate Equipment. While I have Ultimate Campaign, it’s still too new and I haven’t yet digested all the info.
3. Alignments: If you’re going to pick Good or Chaotic, you’ll need to convince me why I should pick you. Be prepared to have your character act in accordance.
4. No Player vs Player conflicts - while the campaign may cater to certain vices, make sure you have a character that will work with the party.
5. Players start at level 1 with a 25 point buy. It ain’t easy being wicked.
6. No Ability above 18 and no ability below 8 during creation.
7. All characters will get 2 traits. The first may be taken from any legitimate Pathfinder Source Material to flesh out the background and character’s personality. I may ask you to reference the source. The second trait needs to be picked from the Crimes of the Forsaken (see Campaign Info tab) – pick the crime that got you condemned. Should you wish to embellish and make up your own misdeeds, check with me and we can tweak the trait accordingly.
8. All classes are available except the Paladin, however it is important to note I will only be choosing 1 of any single class.
9. All character Classes receive max hit points at 1st level. Take 1 above half (d6=4/d8=5/d10=6/d12=7) for subsequent levels.
10. Favored Class Bonus' as normal.
11. I will not be allocating exp, but instead will advise the players to level up the characters at appropriate times.

Instructions for Potential Applicants:

Step 1 – Read this article. No really, go read it – I’ll wait.

I expect you to abide by what you just read. Now the fun stuff:

I’ll be screening applicants in stages so as not to waste anyone’s time doing a full-blown crunch, alias and/or background just to end up not being selected. I respect your time too much to ask for that.
For the initial stage, please only submit the following:

1. A Character Concept – what race/class/archetype/alignment you want to play and why?
2. A brief back story on the character you have in mind along with the circumstances that had you end up in Branderscar prison. Intrigue me, pique my interest.
3. Your character’s personal goal/motivation for revenge upon Talingarde.
4. A brief writing sample – no more than 100-200 words at the most. Less is fine. More is not.
5. Your posting habits, activity level, PbP experience and whether you have played WotW before.
Should the concept appeal to me and sound like it would make for an interesting story, I may ask a select few of you to provide further details, flesh out the characters a bit more etc.

Recruiting will remain open for 10-14 days (closing no later than July 29 - possibly sooner). I’ll give 24 hours notice before I close recruitment so last minute applicants can squeeze in if needed.
I hope to have the final party selections within 48 hours of closing recruitment.
Factoring in a few additional days doing final tweaks to backgrounds and back stories in discussion, reviewing character crunches etc. I anticipate starting roughly 48 hours after the party is finalized (possibly sooner).

About Me:

I've been gaming for over 25 years, from way back in the AD&D days. I've played and GM'ed countless games on table-top. However, with family and work commitments, I have moved my passion for gaming to online forums so I can get my fix and fit it into my schedule. So far it has been quite rewarding.

I would love to play. I'm thinking a tiefling monk.

Liberty's Edge

dotting for interest. Will get a submission to you by the end of the day. I have a couple ideas percolating. ;)

I'll come up with something, for sure. I'm assuming none of the archetypes introduced by the folks that put out WotW are allowed either?

I definitely have some ideas, and I'll be posting one of them up soon enough. I've read a couple of runs of the game, but I've never really played from the beginning. I'm in one pbp of it, but as I said, I'd love to play from the beginning.

I'd love to play in this game, and I'm pleased to hear how committed you sound to regular posting and continued play. I'm very early in a PbP of this adventure path now, but it seems to by dying on the vine. And I just got to play in a game run by Gary McBride (author of the Way of the Wicked AP, as you probably know) at PaizoCon and it was so creative and fun, I'm dying to see where the AP goes!

I'd like to play a version of the character I've got already made for this. Are you open to the alternate heritages for tieflings? I've got an Oni-spawn tiefling inquisitor of Asmodeus, who is melee-focused but is also a skilled clockmaker and has some Disable Device ability as a result. His background is below. I'll need to revise his crunch a bit, as he was made with the focus/foible method, but I wanted to run the general concept by you before investing that time.

Like you, I've been playing RPGs a long time (30+ years). I manage to fit in one real-life game most of the time, but PbP definitely helps me scratch the itch. I really enjoy building relationships with other PCs, and enjoy the challenge of clearly presenting a character with a personality through my writing. Feel free to check out some of my other PbPs if you're so inclined.

Okay, no need to bury you with a wall of text - just let me know about alternate tiefling heritage, and I'll revise and submit my troubled soul pronto.

Background:

Nearly a century ago, Ferrin Venax was born in Ghastenhall, into a family of craftsmen renowned for the quality and reliability of the clocks they made. While the Venax family certainly valued the beauty of what they created, they placed far greater significance on what the clocks stood for: order, precision, predictability and, of course, punctuality. They expected things to happen on a schedule, and at their proper time, and by the age of 15 or so, it was clear that Ferrin was not following a normal schedule. He had always been a bit…different, as a boy. He struggled to fit in to the ordered structure of his household and society at large, leaving his parents to hope he would outgrow his social awkwardness, even surliness at times. But a greater trouble arose - as his classmates and siblings grew and came to be young men and women, Ferrin seemed to be lagging behind, as if under some spell, or as if he were one of the longer-lived races, an elf or some such.

His family, being devout worshippers of Mitra as well as believers in the proper, natural order of things, were quite distressed by this. They took the boy to priests and wizards, hoping to understand their son’s ‘condition’, and ‘cure’ him. It soon became clear that the boy was not under a curse or a spell, but no one could provide an answer to why he did not appear to be growing and aging like a normal child. One day, however, a senior priest of Mitra came to visit the Venax household and speak to Ferrin’s parents. Ferrin had always been a curious, even sneaky, child, and knew where he could hide undetected and hear everything said in his father’s sitting room. He felt the priest had almost certainly come to discuss Ferrin’s ‘condition’ and made sure to eavesdrop, and what he heard changed his life.

The Mitran priest said that he and other learned priests had discussed Ferrin at great length, and had come to the unfortunate conclusion that he was some sort of devil-spawn. The priest had come to collect the boy, and bring him to the temple for study and perhaps exorcism, or worse, if that failed. Ferrin heard only the very first words of his father’s protests, for he knew the Mitrans would have their way in the end. The boy fled his home that moment, and fled the city by nightfall.

Since then, Ferrin has wandered from city to city in Talingarde. He stays for ten years or so in each place, finding work as a valued assistant in the best clockworks in each city, for he learned a great deal in his own family’s workshops before leaving home, and he has a natural mechanical talent that extends beyond the inner workings of clocks. After a decade in one place, though, it begins to become clear to those around him that he is not aging, and questions begin to arise. Ferrin learned painfully that he needs to leave where he is before that time – after 12 years in Daveryn, where he felt relatively comfortable and settled, he had to kill a man to protect his secret. Soon after that, he began to develop strange powers, including the ability to see in the dark and transform himself into other creatures, which have helped him keep his true nature a secret and move on. He knew from this that the Mitran priest was right, and that he was the spawn of some hell. In response, Ferrin turned to the secret worship of the Lord of Hell, and felt his powers grow still greater. With no church of Asmodeus he can visit, his worship is a lonely one, but one he feels all the more strongly as a result, and that sustains him in his wanderings. He has found that he can return to a city after he has not been there for 20 or 30 years without stirring up questions, but he has no idea how long he might live, and wonders how long this 80-year-old game of hide-and-seek will go on.

Unfortunately, the question of how long he will live has been taken out of his hands. After a few years in Matharyn, where Ferrin was working in a venerable clocksmith’s shop where he had once been employed nearly forty years earlier, disaster struck. The elderly patriarch of the family, who had been Ferrin’s employer long ago and who scarcely ever came to the shop any more, saw Ferrin and recognized him. The old man’s puzzlement about Ferrin’s age could have been explained away as senility, but he called in two younger relatives, who had known Ferrin when they were children and had not recognized him. All agreed this was the man they once knew, untouched by age. They peppered him with questions, and Ferrin grew evasive and gruff with them. They refused to let him leave the store and, though Ferrin is a big man, managed to tackle him while the old man called for the guard. Desperate not to reveal his strange powers, Ferrin drew a knife from the belt of one of his assailants and killed him, and then his younger cousin. He then made to flee out the front door, but in the wealthier districts of Matharyn, the watch is never far away. Ferrin ran out the door, battered from the fight, a bloody dagger in his hand and two bodies in the workshop behind him, with no explanation for his actions. A pair of guardsmen clubbed him into unconsciousness immediately, and he woke up in a cell in Branderscar Prison.

Appearance:
Ferrin looks human enough to a casual observer. His pale skin, shoulder-length black hair, and blue-green eyes are an unusual combination, but not unearthly. He is tall and broad-shouldered, yet slender – but not so slender as to appear alien. But looking closely, one begins to note differences about him. He has very large hands, marred in places by odd, bony protrusions. He often wears gloves to cover them, but this is impractical when he’s working on clocks or other delicate work. Ferrin has similar bony bumps on his feet and lower legs, usually hidden by a pair of stout boots. Surprisingly, his large hands are very skilled at fine work, and often appear to move of their own accord, the fingertips rolling across each other as if adjusting a minute screw or coiling a tiny spring.

A close look at Ferrin, or a glimpse of him without a shirt on, tells an odder tale. He has a series of bony ridges down his back, four gnarled, uneven lines running roughly parallel. These odd growths, the ridges, knobs and spurs that mark the taint in his blood, first appeared when he was a young man. In the beginning, the bone trails on his back were only two thin marks, two little cicatrices of bone between his shoulder blades. But these ridges have slowly grown over the years, getting longer, spreading wider, and becoming more knobby and contorted. His studies of the hells have suggested to him that he is Oni-blooded, but this tells him little, for the Oni are essentially shapeless, taking on whatever form whim drives them to. Thus, though Ferrin wonders what form he will ultimately grow to have, he can only wait and see. But he has lately felt a tingling, as of new bone growth, in his arms and shoulders.

I've got an idea I've been peculating for a not-so-nice human bard. Dotting for interest as I mull things over this weekend.

Very enticing. I have been accepted into one PbP. However, I would love to get into more.

I've never played an "evil" campaign, but I think this would be great fun.

Thinking about a Half-elf Oracle of Bones.

I'll have a submission up sometime this weekend.

Dark Archive

i am very interested in playing a evil noble!! haha...I can go Fighter or Chevilier. I do evil nobles well. haha....Human with noble scion feat of House Jeggare..One of the traits will be rich parents and the other I will have to check out that book u mentioned. Mainly to look for anyone thats close to murder or assualt on someone.

Gonna roll up a halfling rogue who got in over his head.

Dark Archive

Definitely interested. I've been wanting to play this AP for a while. Here's my initial submission, per your guidelines:

Spoiler:

1. A Character Concept – what race/class/archetype/alignment you want to play and why? I have a concept for a LE Human Male wizard (enchantment specialist). He would actually be how I saw a previous PbP character, but couldn't play the way I wanted since it was a "no-evil" type campaign. This is a character that disdains physical violence and prefers deceit and guile to get his way. However, he's not shy about eliminating someone who's no longer useful ...
2. A brief back story on the character you have in mind along with the circumstances that had you end up in Branderscar prison. Intrigue me, pique my interest. I will develop more fully, of course, but in brief, he's the son of a diplomat from a foreign/overseas kingdom. He's spent time in many different lands, learning the ins and outs of how to twist words and influence people by telling them what they want to hear. When his father was expelled from Talingarde when it was discovered he was an Asmodeus worshipper, he stayed behind as he found the gullible people of Talingarde "easy pickings". He was caught in a particularly ambitious scheme to bilk a nobleman out of a significant amount of money; now he eagerly wants out to show these naïve twits who's the better person (and also get some payback for how he and his family was treated).
3. Your character’s personal goal/motivation for revenge upon Talingarde. See above. After being forced out of Talingarde, his father's career was ruined, and his family currently lives in "poverty" in his homeland (actually, middle-class accommodations, but since they were used to much better, poverty is how it seems ...)
4. A brief writing sample – no more than 100-200 words at the most. Less is fine. More is not. I recently repurposed an older character for a new PbP; an example is here
5. Your posting habits, activity level, PbP experience and whether you have played WotW before. I'm on pretty much every day; usually in the evenings EST (6-9pm timeframe) and the mornings on the weekend. In my current PbPs, they have moved pretty slowly on average so I haven't posted every time I'm on (I absolutely will post as the activity dictates). Currently, only one of the PbPs I'm in is actually progressing; two others are on hold and another two were on hold but look to be pretty dead. Every so often, I have to travel overseas for work and won't be able to post every day, but I'll give about a week's notice when that happens. I've been participating in PbPs on these boards for quite a long time (almost 5 years). Some have lasted longer than others (my very first PbP is actually one of the two that just recently died, which is pretty good I think :-)).
As for WotW, I have never played it, but I'll be honest to say I own and have read all of them. I'm pretty good about keeping player knowledge separate from character knowledge, though.

If you're interested in my concept and I can have stats and stuff up pretty quick. Thanks!

Questions and Samples and Such:
1. A Character Concept – what race/class/archetype/alignment you want to play and why?

I want to play a Neutral Evil halfling rogue/burglar. Virtually every character I've ever played had some "face turn" or heroic elements. I want to play a selfish little s@~& who doesn't care about anybody. The challenge (and interest) comes from playing such a character naturalistically, without twirling mustaches and so forth. I don't want a CE maniac or a LE arch-villain; more of a henchman trying to make his way.

2. A brief back story on the character you have in mind along with the circumstances that had you end up in Branderscar prison. Intrigue me, pique my interest.

He'll have come from a large family ...at least seven or eight siblings, with my guy smack in the middle. Not the firstborn, not the baby, he sort of had to provide for himself from a very early age; his family was dirt poor, his father a low-level craftsman. My character would have seen the wealth available to some, and covet the comfort that came with it. He'd have started out a street rat, scrounging for what he could. He'd eventually move up to confidence games, playing on his innocent looks to swindle foolish people. Eventually he'd start working on burglaries; he's an excellent second story man, able to get into and out of places most people couldn't. These were going fine for him until that one time that it didn't.

Turns out on one job, the guard whose throat he slit casually just so happened to be the son of a wealthy merchant in good standing with the church. The son had forsaken his wealth and privilege to "earn his weight." The tragic story went poorly for our little halfling burglar, who was the only part of the job caught, due to magical interference after the fact.

It would have all been fine if it weren't for some self-righteous rich dickbag human, as he's come to conclude since being caught.

3. Your character’s personal goal/motivation for revenge upon Talingarde.
His overall goal is to acquire wealth and comfort ...power is only a means to those ends. He wants it to be his turn to sit on cushioned seats with the finest foods being served to him by human servants. He blames the humans' church, their government, and their idiotic self-righteousness. If he can screw them over in the process, all the better.

He's used to working in a group (a "string" in his vernacular) and recognizes the assets that others can bring to a job. He's not a planner or a tactician; he's very willing to follow the lead of someone smarter. The more powerful the ally, the more useful.

And he hates squealers.

4. A brief writing sample – no more than 100-200 words at the most. Less is fine. More is not.

"And here's the thing that pisses me off the most," the halfling continued. "I've killed before. It's not fun or something I do for no reason, but sometimes in a job you have to put someone down. If you can't do that, you're a liability to your string. So I've done it when I've had to. Plenty of times. And it ain't like speaking to the dead is some new spell they just figured out. Did they use it for any of those other stupid a~**~@*s who got in the way? No. Why? Cause of money. His money, not the money we were stealing. You get some godsdamned gold in your pocket and all the sudden you're worth more ...as a living being. And then they get mad if we try to get the gold ourselves. Chaps my ass."

The halfing's cellmate said nothing. To be fair, he hadn't said anything since that first night when he woke up with a shiv in his mouth and the halfling on top of him. "Your life or your tongue," the little thing had said. The choice was easy.

5. Your posting habits, activity level, PbP experience and whether you have played WotW before.
I'm in a few games now, and have been doing PbP in one shape or the other for over a decade. I can usually post multiple times daily (especially during summer, as I'm a teacher on vacation). Never played this AP before but I've always wanted to.

Thanks for the interest thus far everyone. I'll be keeping a tally of all applicants and classes received so I can better review each one and you (potential applicants) can see which classes have multiple applicants already.

Shadow Lodge

Hello GM, I am interested in the way of the wicked game. I have created a Half-Orc Transmutation Wizard (With the Shapechanger Subschool). Basically making a melee-oriented wizard who uses buffing spells to make himself stronger and tougher in combat. His Stats and Background are on the attached sheet. Suffice to say he's a child of a human slave of an orc tribe raise by orcs, taken under the wing of a shaman and trained in magic and then joined a pirate crew with orcs seeking to conquer new lands across the sea and ended up in Talongarde only to be captured and charged with Piracy.

story:

1 my concept is a LE-LN (depending on whats best for the party) hexcrafter magus. He is a sort of peasant scholar. his path was decided when he learned of the ancient witchkings of old. His interest blossomed into an obsession and he began the process of bargaining with the source of the witchking's power, the Unseelie fey. They taughthim much, alas he was caught by the famed witch hunter (I forget his name) and was sent to Brandenscar to be burned at the stake.
2 where he is from?
My character is from a small village of Salineer, which is (in)famous for it's connections to the Fey courts and Hags. My character was a peasant who due to his interest in the arcane was the focus of the reigning lords attention, Sir Cromwell. Sir Cromwell despised arcanists and fey and made great efforts to discourage both in the village.
3 His motive for revenge is conquest, Talingarde will be refashioned in his image and it will be ruled by a witchking. He will also hunt down the witch hunter and his family, all will bow or they will die.
4 for a writing sample give me a prompt.
5 I post a decent amount, I like intrigue.

Liberty's Edge

1.Concept LE Human Ranger Favored Enemy= Human. He's a Sherrif that was a little over-zealous in his capture and treatment of prisoners. He felt Might made right.

2. A brief back story = Gregor Kardoff was good at his job of capturing criminals. The fear of the people in his terriroty was testimony to that. His punishments were a little harsh, but whats the saying? You cant make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. A Thief? Cut off his hand., and break the fingers on the other. A Paist, neuter him and blind him so he couldnt look at women again. A Smuggler? sieze all of his assets and cut a leg off so he couldnt move around anymore...

How dare those holier than thou good two shoes from thinking he was too harsh though. He didnt deserve to be put in jail....He was just enforcing the Law, ...as he saw fit. He would make them pay!!!!

[ooc]I can go into more detail, but my brain is a little frazzled from working 12 hours at the moment ;)

3. Your character’s personal goal/motivation for revenge They need to be reminded that those that made the law, MADE the Law. He plans on escaping and imposing his brand of justice, on the very people who put him in jail. Let the punishment exceed the crime.

4. A brief writing sample – no more than 100-200 words at the most. Less is fine. More is not.

Gregor snapped the manacle shut on his latest prisoner. She had been arrested for tax evasion. Missy you shouldnt have kept those silvers hidden when I came around for the tax. You know Its expensive to insure the safety of the people.

please sir. My children needed food. It was all I had.

I understand Dear. But theres plenty of ways to make money. Perhaps if you worried less about dodging the tax and more about coming up with it, youd have found the resource to pay it. No Missy, if one is allowed to break the law, then all will feel the right to break it. There can be no exceptions. Now what'll it be? Branding? or the loss of a finger?...to remind you to do better next time?

5. Your posting habits, activity level, PbP experience and whether you have played WotW before.

As you play in one of my games, you know my posting habits ;) Ive been playing since 1975 (shhhh dont say it that loud). I have a Rogue in a Way of the Wicked Campaign that is faltering. In a month we havent even got off the top floor of the jail ;) I dont see it lasting and posting of players is falling off as well as the dm's attendance level.

However, I can seperate church and state..re player knowledge from character knowledge and am a solid role player. Not into min-maxing as much as weaving an interesting story.

One for me: Morlos, the tiefling cleric (fiendish vessel). One for my IRL wife: Akasidra, half-orc antipaladin (lord of darkness)

Cleric:

1. A Character Concept – what race/class/archetype/alignment you want to play and why?
tiefling/cleric/fiendish vessel/LE. I find it would be a good mix for this sort of game, and the character would, without a doubt, be very much understanding the stakes that were in existence for the country and his own life.

2. A brief back story on the character you have in mind along with the circumstances that had you end up in Branderscar prison. Intrigue me, pique my interest.
Dropped at the steps of the church when he was a baby, the tiefling bore the Contract Maker's mark on his chest, and he has attempted to learn everything possible about Mephistopheles as possible. As his blood is fiendish, he feels it's his duty to find a deeper connection to all the powers available to him. He was preaching the words of Mephistopheles, Asmodeus, and all the Seven Layers of Hell, showing the people of every town he visited that Mitra was a coward who lacked true power and that the manipulation of the crown would lead to the country being destroyed. Like many who brought others over to the dark lords, he finally met the legendary witch hunter. And so, with his own personal forces and allies decimated, dead, or converted, his pride has taken a major hit along the way to his doom.

3. Your character’s personal goal/motivation for revenge upon Talingarde.
He intends to destroy Mitran worship wherever he can, bring doubt in the holy documents, and lock individuals in contracts to ensure the revenge on Talingarde. If possible, he also wants to see about releasing devils into this plane of existence.

4. A brief writing sample – no more than 100-200 words at the most. Less is fine. More is not.
If you need this, I can post something up, but you've seen it in the pbp we're in together.

5. Your posting habits, activity level, PbP experience and whether you have played WotW before.
Very active. I post on several games, as my days are pretty open (given my job). I've got several pbp under my belt, and I'm in one WotW game that is going slowly. In that one, I'm one of several individuals who was introduced post-escape, and we are still in the house and have just recently done our signatures, so I don't have much knowledge of it.

Antipaladin:

1. A Character Concept – what race/class/archetype/alignment you want to play and why?
Half-orc/antipaladin/lord of darkness/LE. If you will allow LE. She wants something martial, with a connection to Asmodeus, and a chance to bring darkness and respect into the world.

2. A brief back story on the character you have in mind along with the circumstances that had you end up in Branderscar prison. Intrigue me, pique my interest.
Akasidra doesn't speak of what brought her into the church of Asmodeus, but she attempted to steal directly from the coffers. What ensued was an attempt to restrain her, which led to an Asmodeian faithful dead and the half-orc woman was conscripted as a guard for the church. As time went gone on, she went higher in the church, eventually growing to the rank of antipaladin.
The time came when the Mitrans truly worked to close down the church, and when it came to her church, she assumed it would be a simple contingent of soldiers. Sadly, it was the famed witch hunter who greeted her. She managed to hold her ground against the man for a good deal of time, got him away from his personal guards, and nearly had the man in position to meet his doom, but this was not to be the time.

What happened? The additional guards managed to find a way to circle the church and flank her, taking the antipaladin down. Rather than give the Asmodeian the pleasure of a death in battle, the witch hunter found it would be much more poignant for her to meet her doom at the end of all evil: Branderscar.

3. Your character’s personal goal/motivation for revenge upon Talingarde.

She wishes to kill Balin, first and foremost. He is an affront to her ego, and her intolerance for failure. In the end, her biggest motivation will be more power and recognition, so that she can rise above those that aren't worthy in her eyes.

4. A brief writing sample – no more than 100-200 words at the most. Less is fine. More is not.
She'll post her own writing sample tomorrow.

5. Your posting habits, activity level, PbP experience and whether you have played WotW before.
She's never done a pbp, but she's willing to be active, in the game, and she's never played WotW.

Sovereign Court

1) Concept - LE Human Wizard - Illusion/Shadow School OR LE Cleric of Zon-Kuthon, if Wizard is already taken.

2) A Brief Back Story

Lucius was always described as a bit odd by those that knew him. As the third son of a middling noble, however, it was simply thought to be a "stage." When he showed to have the gift for the arcane arts, odd quirks became even more expected. For a time, it might have been nothing more than that. Then he found a new way friends. Friends that taught him a new way of thinking and looking at the world. One that challenged him, and amazed him, and, in the end, consumed him. The witch hunters are mostly sure they caught everyone he had brought into his cult. Mostly.

3) Goals and Motivations

The terrible ecstasy of the Midnight Lord is one meant to be shared. The revelations to be found in pain, both pain given and pain received, are transcendental. Of course, examples will need to be made. The best ones will of course be those that betrayed him, that refused to understand him, that branded him a criminal for his beliefs....Yes, they will make a glorious start indeed.

4) Writing Sample

Lucius stared stoically out the small barred window before him. One of the guards jeered at him.

"Begging your Honor's pardon. The accommodations of your new home must be a bit below your usual, but I'm sure you'll be able to make due."

His fellows laughed along with him. Lucius turned slowly and gave the man a cold, empty look. One side of his lips curled up in a practiced sneer.

"Your words are as empty as your beliefs. Your jokes are as hollow as your head. Your laughter is as gutted and petty as your soul."

With an almost casual motion, the instigating guard backhanded Lucius. Rocking with the blow, the fallen noble laughed quietly. Along with what would soon be a bruise, he also sported a vicious grin.

"You lash out like a drunken animal. For all that you seem to have grown accustomed to handing out pain, have you ever learned how to savor it's return?" Lucius slowly walks towards the rattled guard, who quickly backpedals, closing and locking the cell door. "I think you've wondered about it. I think you've gone home to your comfortable home and your comfortable wife, and your comfortable life outside these walls and spend many a night staring at the ceiling, wondering." Lucius wraps his long, bony fingers around the bars as he leans forward. "Wondered 'What did that feel like?' When you're ready to learn the answer, I'll be right here. Waiting to educate you."

His mad laughter chased the guards down the corridor.

5) Previous Experience

Admittedly, I've not actually participated in a PbP before, nor run through WotW. However, I'm part of a weekly live game group that's run the Pathfinder system, along with a variety of others, over the course of five plus years. I work a 8-5 M-F, but I have a few hours in the evening in which I can certainly put out at least one post.

Dark Archive

1. Character Concept – what race/class/archetype/alignment you want to play and why?

Human/Cavalier/LN because I am not a saint nor am I a devil. Sometimes you got to put a couple folks in the dirt for others to realize you mean business. I live by my code of honor, not anyone else's.

2. A brief back story on the character you have in mind along with the circumstances that had you end up in Branderscar prison. Intrigue me, pique my interest.
My Great Grandfather first immigrated here from noble Cheliax. He started multiple businesses and even attained a title here. He fought for the half-blood Kings right to rule and was slain in battle. The new Kind forced my Grand father who was only a boy to kneel and give fealty to the new Tyrant. Some people call our King a gentle and good man. I see a man that condones genocide against his own people. If you have the wrong faith here then your dead. I spoke these thoughts to other nobles. I tried to organize a peaceful Kou-de-ta however this Dictators spies captured me and charged me with Sedition!! Sedition!! Those blind fools cant see I am trying to bring religious freedom to all? Toss ME in jail..Going to execute me! A noble of house Jeggare!! Those watered down nobles are going to pay.
3. Your character’s personal goal/motivation for revenge upon Talingarde.
Did I mention I didn't like being in prison? Oh yea the ones that put me here are going to pay. This trumped up Religious extremist Dictator we call a king's head will be on my wall. Then what?..Well there needs to a righteous King that's a true patriot of the country. So why not me...eh? I like Emperor..hmm sounds nice..or maybe a new province of Cheliax. hmm....
4. A brief writing sample – no more than 100-200 words at the most. Less is fine. More is not.
In the dark cell thoughts of the betrayal of his country he loved so much surfaced in the noble's mind while playing with his family ring. I am going to die because I love my land too much. Yes, technically it was sedition but its for the betterment of our country. Those fools think they are so special..The noble started thinking of the what "ifs" of his past. The grimace appeared on his face when his thoughts lingered on his first love. That elf girl..It was more of a one sided love affair. She laughed and scorned him for being human..now that his death approached he came to a sudden conclusion...Sometimes you just need to clip an elfs ears. the sudden statement in the darkness was loader then he meant. The guards heard it no doubt. Probably whispering about how crazy he was. He was called by the judge..oh what was it? The judge said I was delusional with thoughts of grandeur. They will pay. The nobles, the judge, even the damned King!!...Laughs came from outside. The guards heard him. Yea and those two as well the young noble whispered while playing with his ring...

5. Your posting habits, activity level, PbP experience and whether you have played WotW before.
I am rather active with checking this site. I should be able to be on several times a day. I have played DnD for over 10 years and switched to pathfinder. Ive played Dark Heresy, Black Crusade, Only War, Warhammer Fantasy, D20 future, and James bond RPG to name a few tabl top games. This will be the first time online however I think this will be a great group of people. Hope I get into the game.

Scarab Sages

Dotting for interest.

Scarab Sages

I have 2 rough concepts (names not hammered out yet)

First:

Half-Elf Witch (Bonded Witch) LE - a cadet member of the house of Barca who wants to overthrow the current rulers (aka Crime of Sedition)
I would like to take Noble Scion (War) feat from the Inner Sea Guide as part to tie him to House Barca. However if you don't want to allow it I'm flexible to find another feat. :)

Second:

Tiefling Cleric (Fiendish Vessel - Dispater) LE
And I'm thinking either slaving or slave trading, his ship was boarded and the merchandise was freed and he was imprisoned so he wants to get revenge on the narrow minded thinkers of Talingarde.

Point #4:

"Get your greasy palms off me. Do you have any idea as to who I am? How dare you interfere with me! I want to talk to your superior!" *oof* The guard's blow to his stomach has temporarily shut him up. He then screams as the branding iron sizzles into his flesh.

I generally check the boards at least once a day, generally multiple times. Howver as I do shift work (days & nights) the times I post vary. I have been in one PbP that has just ground to a halt. I am currently running Way of the Wicked for my gaming group (currently nearing the end of book 2). I have approx 30 years with D&D (can you say Basic?) and have also played Amber, GURPS, Call of Cthulu, World of Darkness (Vampire/Mage/Werewolf) and other various systems over the years.

1. A Character Concept – what race/class/archetype/alignment you want to play and why?
I'd like to play a NE gnome summoner, motivated solely by greed and interested in personal gain. I've never played one, so I wouldn't be able to build the kind of crazy natural-attacking powerhouse I've heard about, but I've been wanting to try out the class for some time. I can draw up the character in little time if requested.

2. A brief back story on the character you have in mind along with the circumstances that had you end up in Branderscar prison. Intrigue me, pique my interest.
A summoning ritual went astray, and he ended up summoning an evil outsider instead of the fiendish animal he intended. He managed to convince the creature that he was worth sparing, and the eidolon bonded with him out of curiosity more than anything else. They worked together for several years to gain wealth - the eidolon would take the appearance of a demon and terrorize a town, and the summoner would step in and "slay" the "demon", for a price. He eventually grew too arrogant, tried it in too large a settlement, and was found guilty of several counts of fraud, and subsequently arrested.

3. Your character’s personal goal/motivation for revenge upon Talingarde.
The damned fools will see what true evil power can do. His goal is to strike true terror into the hearts of the people of Talingarde by becoming ever more powerful and summoning true demons.

4. A brief writing sample – no more than 100-200 words at the most. Less is fine. More is not.
As the ritual was completed and the "demon" appeared before him, the gnome laughed with glee. "Well well well. It seems the people grow ever more desperate, eh?"
The creature before him grinned, revealing a maw filled with razor-sharp teeth. "Perhaps. Or maybe my performance is simply becoming more convincing."
"Ah, but of course. You're ever improving. That howl was a particularly nice touch, by the way." The gnome began counting the gold into two seperate bags, admiring the jewellery that had formed part of the payment. "Giving away a wedding band? That fellow must have been truly desperate." He finished counting and tied up the bags. "And what shall I do with your cut?"
"Hold onto it for now," the creature yawned, waving a paw dismissively. "Use it, if you must. You know I'll only be taking most of your share with me when I leave."
"Not until I have enough to live comfortably," the gnome scoffed. "Out of curiosity, how will I know when you're about to leave?"
"Oh, don't you worry," the "demon" grinned. "You'll know."

5. Your posting habits, activity level, PbP experience and whether you have played WotW before.
I should be able to post at least once a day. More in theory, but I live in Australia, so my posts probably won't match up. I've been in two PBPs, one of which seems to be dead. I have the WotW pdfs, but haven't read them, and haven't played the AP. I have very little RPG experience - about 6 months playing Pathfinder, and my own 3.5 campaign which has been going on for 7 months - but I've done a lot of reading. I've also never played an evil PC, so if I need nudging to stay on the path of the wicked, I'm always happy to accept criticism and advice from those more experienced than myself.

(Still pretty new. Be gentle.)

Faust is a human bard, that uses his natural charm and charisma to manipulate everyone he meets into doing as he wishes. He is Neutral Evil, and only has his comfort, and best interests at heart.

Faust is a con man by nature. He could be incarcerated for any number of crimes, but it seems that his best made plans have been what finally got him in trouble. If only his greed hadn't led him to his final score...and capture. Everything was going fine. The remote hamlets he was fleecing had no idea that he wasn't really a cardinal of the church of Mitra. After all the local priests and even the bishop were eager to believe that a grand cathedral of Mitra in the area could have been commissioned by the King. He enjoyed the wining and dining, and the finest comforts that could be offered to one of his high standing, but his greatest joy was the growing mound of gold that the contributions to the church were gathering... But then that nosy priest had to write the king a letter thanking him for choosing this location for the new cathedral.

Needless to say his appearance before the king didn't go entirely as he had hoped, and his charm spell failed miserably...but still a life in the salt mines was a bit extreme. After all I had offered to return all the gold, (Well it might be a few thousand short...per diem you know). Well if that's the way he feels he can just find where the gold is hidden himself.

Faust has been convicted or Grand Fraud for pretending to be a Cardinal of the Church of Mitra, collecting, and gathering support for a new Cathedral to be built in a certain area of the kingdom. Trying to Charm the King with Magic, didn't help reduce his sentence any.

Is the "no stat above 18 or below 8" rule before or after racial modifiers? Not super important, but could see myself going 19 dex if its before racials.

After racial modifiers.

Alas they are both very tempting villians to play at this point... :)

I have an idea for a background that would have our elf here on a decades-long search for a man that killed his older brother. Time has taken its toll on his soul, turning him into someone with little regard for what is right or wrong, all that matters is his quest for revenge. When that quest leads him to outright murder of one of the associates of his prey, the law of the land found him guilty. The idea needs a little flesh and detail but at least I have something to go on.

Im looking at making an Archaeologist Bard and was wondering about Disable Device as a class skill. Googled to see if there had been errata for it absence in the Archetype but found nothing. I did however find this thread.

Linkies!

About half way down, the author of the Archetype, Russ Taylor, pops in with the following statement:

Russ Taylor wrote:
I do have to admit, part of my intent was swayed by not wanting to waste a large block of words on a skill refactor. It was said at the time that it was not kosher to say "archetype loses X as a skill and gains Y", so any change to skills would have required listing the entire skill block.

This isnt exactly official errata by even the most optimistic interpretation, but I was wondering if you as DM would allow the Archetype to have Disable Device as a class skill, possibly by losing Perform (which the Archetype has no use for)

dm, this is shadowyfox's wife. I am going to be playing Akasidra, the antipalladin. I haven't done much roleplay lately as my creativity is gone at the moment. I am trying to bring it back. I have alot of roleplay games such as Battletech, Rifts, and Nightbane. Never done Pathfinder, but I am willing to give it a shot. As for posting habits, I can post about as often as my husband. I'll have the additional info in a little bit as I have someone coming over to buy my old washer and dryer.

I'd prefer to leave this kind of tweaking more so for the discussion forum once the group has been finalized and I see what kind of mix we have. For now, I'm looking more so for what the character concept and motivations would be. For instance, how on earth (get it? earth... because archeologists dig around... ahh... nvm) would an archeologist end up in Branderscar and why would he want to get back at an entire kingdom?

Couple more applications added to the list. Quite a few decent ones to choose from - especially in the arcane/divine category. This is going to make my choices a lot tougher... thanks folks.

DM Fayren:

I have a character inspired from the movie Breach. The true story of the traitor Robert Hanssen who admits he sold US secrets and betrayed his country out of ego. The thrill of being in on a larger secret and watching everyone scurrying to fill a breach that he created was thrilling and exciting.

Hence a small aasimar seventh in a family of do-gooders who betrays everything and gets caught.

Read the background and tell me what you think. If a fallen aasimar making a pact with the infernal is too much, I can change to human.

Thanks.

DM:

Posting habits are pretty good. Check out my lizardman paladin alias Justin. He is level five and on book 2 of Age of Worms. I have never done WotW. It's evil nature had me suspicious, but I figured if I'm gonna do evil, I'm going to do it big.

Writing example, first two posts of my Lizardman paladin in Age of Worms:
With his prayers to Iomedae recently complete, the young lizardman walks to the rendezvous. In his short time in town, he has been impressed by the order and structure of the industrious mining establishment. As for the equity of the system, he had decided to withhold judgement.

I get to meet the illustrious Alustran's agent, and yes, I can be discreet.

The lizard man enters the Rusty Bucket and runs an unblinking gaze across the entire restaurant. He is unarmed and wearing an explorers outfit complimented by a nice coat with an embroidered sword of Iomedae. His impeccable dress and manners are a sharp contrast to his reptillian appearance. After a few awkward glances he approaches the ladies' table.

"I was told to meet a large group here", he says in perfect common with no trace of accent. "Would you, perchance, be them?"

Justin does a large, sweeping bow.

Justin quickly removes his riding gloves and takes Dryn's hand in his calloused one.

"So, I am not the only one with teeth. Very nice to meet you my lady. As for your plan to domesticate lizards, many in my tribe have done it. I think I am a walking experiment to see if a lizard-man can be domesticated--I hope it works out."

Justin's smile shows even more teeth and he makes a gesture akin to a small wink.

dm:

Akasidra heard footsteps as they entered the church. She didn't know whom they were, but she knew well enough that they were after her. She had overheard she was dangerous. She laughed at the thought. She knew it well enough to be true. She ran up the stairs of the church and jumped out onto the street. She looked around cautiously as she pulled her hood over her head so no one would notice her. She walked slowly down the street as to not draw attention to herself. She rounded a corner and stopped to catch her breath. She turned back to look at the church. She saw alot of the clergy being escorted out in shackles. She didn't dare reveal where she was. She wondered well enough of what would happen to them. She hoped that they wouldn't reveal of her whereabouts not that any of them knew she had escaped. She stood at the end of the corner. She knew well enough as she took off her hood that the soldiers would recognize her and come after her. She reached her hand down to her waist ready and willing to kill.

I dont personally get too caught up in the names of archetype and classes. I usually focus more on how the mechanics can complement the character I have in mind. A good example is when GMs ban the Ninja, "cuz this aint no eastern setting". Outside of one weapon proficiency, theres nothing inherently "asian" about the class.

But, if it is important to you, ill quote the Archetypes flavour text:

"No stodgy researcher, this archaeologist meets his research head-on in the field. Archaeologists sacrifice the bard’s inspirational performance for a smattering of rogue talents."

"This archetype also fits rogue-like characters that focus more on learning than on stabbing foes in the back."

Emphasis mine :)

Ive realized by the end of this post that my reply as written, may come off as argumentative or even slightly hostile. So just to dispel any doubt on the matter, it surely isnt intended to be.

EDIT: Just a heads up, while the character is indeed a Bard, through archetype and fighting style, hes going to be intended for the Traps / Skills spot in the group.

No worries - even GM's need to be kept honest at times. ;) While I've read most of the hardcover books, I have no inclination to memorize them all so feedback is always welcome. The goal here is to make the game enjoyable for the entire group with yours truly acting as a moderator. You, the players are going to write this story, not I.

By the way DM, here is the avatar for Gregor Kardoff (This is Dread) and looking over the 'crimes' hed be taking Heresy.

in the course of performing his duties as Sherrif, one of his deputies and several people cautioned him on his 'too serious approach to handling crimes' and that it went against the principles of Mitra and he was heard to say 'Mitra Be Damned! I'll punish how I see fit. I am the Law around here!'

and a few days later the Pally's came for him. :D

In reviewing the applications received thus far, I'm already having a hard time narrowing the field down as there are so many well qualified individuals!

I think I'll need to close off the recruitment process a LOT sooner than I expected to. You have the next 24 hours to get any last minute apps in should you choose to or submit any additional details/refinements you wish to include. I'll start narrowing the field down tomorrow. Recruitment will be officially closed as of 2 pm EST, July 16.

Here is my application for a front-line fighter

1. A Character Concept – what race/class/archetype/alignment you want to play and why?
Human Fighter (Tactician) LE. I feel this combination best fits a trained recruit of Talingarde’s military who wishes to purge the corruption he sees in the kingdom.

2. A brief back story on the character you have in mind along with the circumstances that had you end up in Branderscar prison. Intrigue me, pique my interest.

Spoiler:
Bron Lenthaven was born in the city of Havelyn, the oldest son of a minor noble family. His family being devout worshippers of Mitra with a long history of military service, Bron was taught to respect tradition and his family history. The great-grandson of Commander Lenthaven, who was part of the final charge that defeated House Barca, Bron gleefully trained with his father in the ways of weapon combat and tactics. His training built his strength and stamina and he learned the essentials of being a soldier in Mitra’s army. By the time Bron was old enough to join the standing army, he was already instilled with a keen discipline and respect for Mitra and Talingarde.

During several years of military service, Bron built friendships, learned more about duty and sacrifice for his country and the crown and even found love. At the age of 20, Bron married Juliet Garduni, second daughter of another minor noble house and acolyte-in-training of the Church of Mitra. For the next three years, Bron happily continued in his duty as soldier and husband, caring for his wife and career equally. Unfortunately, Bron would soon learn that even the glorious kingdom of Talingarde wasn’t without its snakes. His wife the victim of a planned accident executed by a rival, her death shattered Bron’s view of the world. He lost faith in Mitra, who hadn’t protected his wife when she needed it, he lost faith in himself and his ability to protect the ones he loves and he lost faith in Talingarde. Seeing the corruption in Talingarde that was epitomized by Sir Lathan Bennifelt, fellow soldier and cause of his wife’s death, Bron made it his mission to see the man dead. Spending the next few months a shell of his former self as he planned Lathan’s death, Bron found his only opportunity to strike the night that Sir Lathan was alone at his home. Breaking into the nobleman’s house, the two crossed blades. Unfortunately, Sir Lathan’s skill with a blade ensured the man held his own until the watch arrived. Taken in for attempted murder, Bron’s desperation and desire for revenge ensured him a place in Branderscar Prison.

3. Your character’s personal goal/motivation for revenge upon Talingarde.
Bron has lost faith in Mitra and sees Talingarde as a corrupt state. Toppling Talingarde will eliminate the corruption and give Bron the chance to face Sir Lathan.

4. A brief writing sample – no more than 100-200 words at the most. Less is fine. More is not.
After a long melee, Bron finally struck Lathan a sound blow that knocked the man’s blade from his hand. Raising his sword to strike the man down, Bron suddenly heard ”Put the blade down!” The Watch had arrived but they would not steal his chance for revenge. Driving his blade downward, Bron grunted as he suddenly felt the piercing pain of a crossbow bolt take him in the shoulder. His wound sapping the strength from his arm and forcing him to drop his weapon before he could finish his strike, Bron fell to his knees as the men of the Watch tackled him to the ground. His angry gaze still focused on Sir Lathan, Bron watched the man rise, dusting the grime from his smock as he said, ”Take this wretch away and may Mitra guide him to what he deserves.”
Tears falling from his eyes as he was shackled and lifted to his feet, Bron thought Mitra has no place in my heart now, Then as if finishing a thought, Bron stated, ”Only your death and the fall of Talingarde will grant what I deserve.” before a hilt strike knocked Bron unconscious.

5. Your posting habits, activity level, PbP experience and whether you have played WotW before.
I am use to a descriptive yet concise writing style and can post several times a day. I have had about 5 years of PbP experience with a focus on D&D and Pathfinder. I have played WotW before but didn’t make it past the opening scene before the DM had to cancel it.

This is Deliverances character, just in case you didnt realize :)

1. A Character Concept – what race/class/archetype/alignment you want to play and why?:

This character is a Half-elf Archaeologist Bard. The "Archaeologist" aspect it more in the vein of "rogueish type with spells" than an actualy "digs in the ground" archaeologist. The choice was made based on the fact that I have yet to play a trap disabler or a dex based character, and enjoy spells too much to go just straight up rogue, atleast this time around. I just really like the Half-elf race in general, both mechanically and from a roleplay perspective, and in this campaign in particular, having a loose relation to house Barca seemed like a fun background element. I intend to pick up a couple of levels of Fighter along the way, then going Eldritch Knight past level 10 (if the AP actually goes that far)

2. A brief back story on the character you have in mind along with the circumstances that had you end up in Branderscar prison. Intrigue me, pique my interest.:

Theres a full story in the alias if you want to read it, but here are the brief highlights.

Giltharon comes from a low ranking noble family with a tradition of producing skilled Magi, who easily find employ as members of the personal guard of the nobility. House Barca in particular tends to aquire the services of their finest. The family puts great stock in their elven blood, being haughty and emotionally detached. Giltharon himself has a coldness and lack of empathy bordering on sociopathy, but his family mistakes it for commitment to the family ways rather than his nature. He is spoiled and has an inflated sense of entitlement. Giltharon seeks to follow the familys magus traditions, but finds his skill inadequate for the profession. Trying to get by, by learning spells by heart (spontanious caster) he eventually get thrown out of the academy. Overcome with shame, he takes to the road rather than return home, falling into a life of theivery to get by. Over time he turns his thieving efforts towards robbing the nobility, eventually getting caught. Challanging the nobleman to a duel, mostly as a taunt, he ends up fighting the noblemans son, killing him and getting hauled before a judge. The noblemans son is the first person he has ever killed, but he has a desire to try killing again, the act bringing him a kind of satisfaction, if not borderline pleasure.

3. Your character’s personal goal/motivation for revenge upon Talingarde.:

During his upbringing, being told constantly about the familys prestigeous ties with the noble house Barca, Giltharon begins to idealize the Barca house, which inevitably leads him to dispise house Darius. With the Mitran church banning other gods, but being so closely tied to house Darius, Giltharon has no god he worships (only paying homage to Mitra to avoid trouble). Being sentenced for killing a man in a fair duel is just the last straw. Before he had done nothing to oppose the rule of the land, content to deal with his own problems, but now that he is a convicted criminal, he finally has an excuse to act on his hatred.

Ideally he would work to place house Barca on the throne. Hopefully once he hands rulership over to them, they will offer him the position he always wanted.

4. A brief writing sample – no more than 100-200 words at the most. Less is fine. More is not.:

This is from another recruitment for another character, in which people were encouraged to roleplay a bit in the thread. Whenever a recruitment asks for a writing sample, I think about this particular bit I wrote in that thread:

Gregory Paltaris wrote:

Sitting by himself at a corner table, a man suddenly joined the conversations, prompted by the goblins incessant talk of fire.

"You talk of fire like one who has yet to feel its hot betrayal on your flesh. You would do well to curb your enthusiasm and learn some respect for the elements you weild goblin."

Leaning out of the shadows, his words were given more weight to anyone who cared to look at him. Fully half his face, the entirety of its right side, was a tangled mass. Burn scars of an angry redish brown color covered and distorted his features, his mouth and brow sagging into a permanent expression of sadness. From within its gaunt, deep socket, a milky white eye leered out into the room, its pupil-less stare seeming to follow your every move, like the eyes of a painting. It all stood in stark contrast to the untouched left side, pale skinned and smirking with a better knowing half smile.

"Look at me and behold the glory of the fire you hold so dear, and pray you do not find yourself in its loving embrace as I have."

Reaching up his left arm, he scratched an itch on his right wrist, the act briefly revealing the arm underneath his heavy coat, the skin that same malformed redish brown. Throughout the inn, minds silently pondered the extend of the ruin covered by that coat.

Probably overshot the 200 word mark by a bit though : /

5. Your posting habits, activity level, PbP experience and whether you have played WotW before.:
I have not previously played WotW. I have a very vague knowledge of how the game starts from reading someone elses adventure a few years back, but that was only up untill the first scuffle with some guards. I am currently involved in 5 other PbPs:

1: A multi party sandbox game

2: A low power (15 pts) dark adventure featuring Jack the Ripper with the PCs being various Londoners (mine being a high class Opium addict)

3 and 4: A RotRL and a homebrew campaign, both run by the same DM with a lighthearted humerous tone to it.

5: A low power (10 pts) campaign about ordinary townfolk turned heroes.

As for my posting habits, I tend to check in far to often throughout the day, having easy access to a computer at most times. I feel confident in saying I can keep up with any pace you set. Very rarely I may be completely unavailable during weekends, but when thats the case I should know about it beforehand and be able to give notice.

Updated the profile of my submission for your review, GM Fyren.

Hi Fyren

Here's Spazmodeus' submission.
I've got personality and background in the profile.

Thanks :)

Oh snap. Dotting. Will have profile up within the hour, hopefully.

El Ronza here, from above. Just made up profiles for my summoner and his eidolon. This is the summoner, and his proile has a link to the eidolon's, for easy reference.

SurplusRaine here, with a submission for Izabelle Moon (Human Druid). I'll be hunting for a good avatar.

Character Concept:

NE Human Druid
It's a dog-eat-dog world out there. It's a world of violence and brutality, and that's exactly how it should be. Only the strong deserve to live. The men of Talingarde have forgotten this. They've grown soft and weak under the rule of law. But the law can't protect them. Not forever. Soon the natural order will be restored. The strong will prey on the weak, and everything will be right in the world.

Izabelle is a killer. She believes in one thing above all - Survival of the fittest: The strong devour the weak. Literally. She eats the flesh of those she kills. She doesn't have any qualms about eating sentient beings. In her eyes all creatures are beasts, regardless of any pretense of "civilization".

However, Izabelle does not kill without reason. She follows the laws of the wild. She does not kill for pleasure or sport. She kills to survive. She kills to assert her dominance. She kills to send a message. All blood spilled has a purpose.

It's important to note that though killing is something is a large part of who Izabelle has become, it isn't her focus - Strength and power is what she's truly about. As long as she can show off her power and assert herself, she is content. Not all encounters need to end in blood.

Party Role
Isabelle functions as a front-line bruiser, as well as a secondary buffer/healer with a few summons on the side. She utilizes mostly buff and utility spells, with very few of an offensive nature.

Backstory:

As the youngest daughter of a family of eight, Izabelle had always been looked down upon as weak. She was small for her age, constantly bullied by other children, her siblings included. It sickened her. Each day she shouted and fought with bigger children, swearing that one day she'd be the stronger than all of them. She was met with laughter.

Eventually it was too much for her, and she fled from the city. The years that followed were a blur of savagery and desperate survival. Not once did she regret her decision. The wilderness would make her strong. It would shape her into something more than the pathetic, weak men of the civilized world. Beasts, bandits and unseelie fey - these became her teachers and inspirations. She saw the pure rule of strength outside the walls of Talingarde. She saw the true face of the world, and it pleased her. She became a predator. A hunter. A killer.

When she came of age, she returned to her former home. She would show them who was the stronger now. They would know how wrong they were.

Izabelle went on a killing spree, hunting down those who had called her weak in the past. The murders were intimate and close. She humiliated them, made sure they knew just who decided whether they would live or die. Sometimes she would hunt them herself. Other times she would leave it to her animal servitor. Ultimately she was captured, overpowered by the guard and sent to Branderscar for her crimes. It wouldn't hold her for long.

Motivation/Goals:
Talingarde is a beacon of humanity's defiance of nature. Here the meek live in undeserved comfort and security, hiding behind the construct of 'justice' and 'law'. Disgusting. Izabelle must remind the ignorant masses of their true nature.
Similarly, she despises those who've come to power by a means other than their own strength. Whether that be money, birth or community respect, it matters little. Only those with the strength to prove it should stand above the rest.

Ultimately, she wishes to break down the current system of society into the basic, natural form. But that's a while away. All one step at a time.

Writing Sample:

She stretches her arms out, savoring the feel of the soft pelt on her skin as she lies on the carpet, basking in the warm glow of the fire. She reaches up towards the ceiling, watching the light's flickering reflection in the crimson sheen that coats her hand. A thin red bead rolls down her arm, dripping to the floor. She smiles.
"That was quite the feast." say she says absently, turning her head towards the man tied to the nearby armchair. He had been a carpenter once. A respectable man. Now he was just meat. He sways, his eyes unfocused, a tremor rolling through his body. His torso glistens red from the chest down, clothes soaked through completely.
"Your liver, in fact, was particularly delicious." She flashes him a grin, running her tongue across her teeth as she rolls onto her belly. In one swift movement she pulls herself to her feet, straddling the man. The glint of steel reveals the knife in her hand, and she stares into his eyes with contempt. She leans in close, her cheek brushing against his. He trembles at her touch, letting out a muffled groan into his filth-caked gag.
"Do not despair," she whispers. "This is the natural order. The strong devour the weak. You know that now. Soon, so will all of Talingarde."

Personal Info:
I post every day, usually as many times as the situation warrants. I'm on Australian time, but I can post around the day so it usually doesn't matter. I'm currently playing in two PbPs, one Council of Thieves game that's been going for about a year, and one Reign of Winter one that's been going since the module came out. Briefly I ran a PbP for two of my IRL players, but eventually we just took it back to tabletop.
I haven't played WotW before.

Personality Stuff:

Izabelle makes use of blood magic and sacrifice (Both of animals and people). Nature is harsh and uncaring, and she tries to emulate that. Though she is essentially selfish in her actions, she can respect and cooperate with those who prove their strength. She recognizes the natural urge to cooperate with others to achieve greater goals and will do so as long as she views her companions as worthy. The weak will be weeded out.

SurplusRaine let slip that he's sniffing around for a good play by post game (the fool!) and I'd like to throw my own hat into the ring. After I link that roleplay article to my own players, of course.

Reading up on way of the wicked now (and peeking at the other submissions as well), but I've got a pretty firm idea on what kind of character I want to play. More on the hour...

With three aussie applications, you folks almost deserve your own group! haha

Here's where we stand as of this morning (8:30 am EST). I'll consider any other submissions that make it in before 2 pm EST today.

@Twigs you're welcome to throw your hat in but time is of the essence unfortunately. Hopefully you can finalize your concept within the next few hours.

If I receive any more good ones, I might have to end up hunting for a co-GM. :)

Duly noted and fixed. Still early in the morning to catch that on the copy-paste!

Or perhaps a liiittle longer than an hour, I wanted to do this right!

Character Concept:

NE Human Rogue
Talingarde is not a kind place to the coward, or the criminal. It was poor luck on Twigs' part that he was born both.

My forum alias is actually named for this character, my very first evil PC. A slimy, cockney thief that has died not once, but twice in a setting with no resurrection magic, Twigs has been on the shelf since 3.5.

He was eviscerated by a redcap in the first encounter after a loooong hiatus, and was briefly revived for a short game on the lower planes (with his guts hanging out for the whole affair, a gutless coward to the end). I'm too sentimental to submit any other rogue to this campaign, and I'm itching for a chance to recapture the balance of being seemingly harmless and comic relief - without guile, charm, or courage - with being completely and utterly irredeemable.

He was the first character I'd played that was just that. A character. With a thick cockney accent, a simple motivation and as much personality as I could inject into him turned out one of the most memorable performances of my roleplaying career, and I think he's just perfect for an evil campaign.

Party Role: A high-strength, low-int rogue, Twigs will be primarily a flanker and support combatant, fighting dirty to get the job done with a mix of unarmed strikes and knife-work. He could also apply debuffing effects through intimidate, the thug archetype and various poisons, as well as a decent array of skills.

Backstory:
A notorious cut-throat, coward and ex-convict, Twigs found the criminal life through a combination of terrible parenting and worse luck. Perhaps if Twigs had known his mother, a poor serving girl and devout Mitran whose pursuit his father could not shake, he might have turned out for the better. But alas, she survived only long enough to ensure that her child wasn't left in the woods to die before the rigors of the bandits life claimed her.

His father died not long after, cut down by the Knights of Alerion in an expidition into the Borderlands, with all Twigs had to remember him by being a trick elbow and several scars. He managed a brutal existence among the remaining bandits, who payed him no mind aside from the occasional kick. They dubbed him "Twigs", for his thin, malnourished frame, and kept the scared, squirrely-eyed whelp under their heels until the last of the bandits were routed and captured, and the frightened child taken to the capital to be raised by the monks of St. Macarius. In the orphanage, Twigs learned several valuable lessons that would see him through several prison sentances: just say the prayers and keep yer bloomin head down.

Hardly soldiering material, Twigs was nonetheless booted out of the orphanage and into the army when he came of age. A constant disappointment to his sergeant and his platoon, Twigs was kept well away from the front lines and earned the position of quartermaster. Deciding that the winds of opportunity were finally blowing his way, Twigs began to skim a little silver off of the top, and soon found himself on the run for embezzlement and desertion, narrowly escaping a hanging by fleeing into the Heartlands and laying low in the Matharyn slums as a beggar and pickpocket.

Thus begun Twigs' long and unsuccessful criminal career, during which he's been imprisoned almost half a dozen times for petty crimes, but managing to escape justice for his desertion. Priding himself on being a shining example of the failures of the Talingarde penal system, Twigs is far from reformed. On the contrary, his stints in prison, surrounded by murderers, arsonists and pirates, have awakened a blossoming criminal mind. A mind that has earned him a short stint in Banderscar prison before a lifetime in the salt mines, a fate Twigs ultimately feels is unjust.

Conjuring up several half-baked escape plans, Twigs is doomed to fail without the aid of other, more capable individuals.

Motivation and Roleplay Niche:
Twigs doesn't have much of a head for the bigger picture. His criminal life has ultimately been the only life he knows, and ultimately all Twigs cares about is survival in a world he's growing increasingly convinced is out to kill him. Still, as the hallmark of stupid people everywhere, it won't be hard to convince the rogue that the world owes him a living, and Twigs will eagerly play his part in whatever plans the party cook up, taking everything they tell him at face value with watery, guileless eyes.

A coward and a yes-man, Twigs has never been on the winning team in his life... but that's about to change. He'll probably play toady to one or all of the other PCs, developing some kind of perverted loyalty to the few people that haven't screwed him over in his life... yet. As what will probably be one of the lighter-hearted characters in the group, I can envision him as the glue that holds the party of self-serving, evil PCs together.

Posting Info::
Like SurplusRaine (Izabelle) above, I can post around the clock, and am probably one of the most active players in the active PbP games I have running. I like PbP as a medium, and am pretty proud of what I've accomplished in a year or two PbPing on the paizo boards. I've had four or so long-running PbP groups, as well as the short game SurplusRaine mentioned and my own attempt at running Burnt Offerings which I just couldn't get going at the kind of pace I would have liked. Playing with SurplusRaine would be awesome, as in our homegames we tend to take turns in the GM chair... Oh, and I can more or less guarantee daily posts. I'm GMT+10 as well, but in my experience my evenings are when everybody else across the globe seems to be posting anyway.

My favourite PCs have been an elven deserter and drunkard in Second Darkness (with the PbP medium allowing liberal use of actual elvish, which was awesome), a human carpenter and family-man in Council of Thieves, a doddering old Merlin-esque wizard in PFS's First Steps and a mad bleachling arcane trickster for reign of winter channeling old germanic fairie myths of snatching babies and haunting homesteads.

For now links will have to suffice until I get a chance to write something up especially for Twigs, but stay posted.
