Background:
Darvik Harrin is the youngest of three children to Willock and Vyssa Harrin, struggling store owners in the village of Milgen, found near the western port of Daveryn. He has an older brother, Falvin, who he very much looks up to as he is already a brave adventurer. A warrior, Falvin was blessed with courage and a strong body, much like his father was before injuries and a chance encounter with Vyssa forced him to give up his own adventuring dreams before they even started. He and his wife started the fledgling Harrin Traders with what money he had earned before settling down.

The competing store in toen, The Devil Dog General Store, is run by a powerful and allegedly connected man by the name of Salvan Tait. He has tried many times to either buy out or run out the Harrins from the city but has never been able to succeed. While Harrin Traders has always been fair and honest, that can not always be said for Devil Dog. Tait could never seem to be able to overcome the loyal customers and traders that Harrin had developed relationships with, in fact without those loyal folks Harrin would have been out of business long ago.

In fact, Darvik had his own run-ins with the younger Tait, Culven. Culven often took advantage and pleasure into bullying Darvik on any occasion. As Darvik grew older he would be able to find ways of either evading or fending off his bully, however there came those times where no escape from Culven and his growing gang of hoodlums. It was during one of these events that a old street-walker, only known to Darvik as "Rizzy", came to his aid. Darvik watched with awe as this old beggar flashed dual blades or shiny steel and proceeded to display great talent and control of his craft. Striking non-lethal but often humiliating blows against Culven and his thugs he saved Darvik from what was likley a brutal beating. At this moment Darvik came to learn the true nature of this former master thief, Rizban Pyke.

Darvik had always been kind to Pyke in the past, often striking up conversations and such during Darvik's childhood. After the encounter with Culven, Rizban decided that Darvik would greatly benefit from the knowledge that he had about his former profession. Soon Darvik became a sort of apprentice, learning how the martial art of a rapier could benefit from the realm of the arcane. Under the watchful eye of Rizban Pyke, Darvik soon became a natural with his newfound skills, often using them to ruin the vile plans and schemes of the younger Tait as he attempted to gain his own influence in the town.

Eventually, Culven Tait set out to make his own mark on the world as an adventurer, though Darvik knew that the younger Tait likely had other, more ill-intended plans. Darvik longed to go and further thwart his plans by following him out of the city and into the world outside, but Rizban was able to persuade Darvik to bide his time and further hone his skills. He told Darvik that he was still too young to hold his own in a potentially fatal fight against a full-grown thug. Darvik relented, trusting his advisor's wisdom and continued to practice his skills and contribute at home.

After some time had passed, bad news had reached the ears of the Harrin family. Their noble warrior, Falvin, had fallen while defending an important caravan of needed supplies and provisions. The entire town mourned with the Harrins, with the veiled exception of the Taits, of course. Darvik was especially devestated, his older brother and childhood hero had passed over to the great beyond. He never imagined that such a strong and courageous man like Falvin could ever die so young.

Soon it was learned that Culven Tait and his brother were on opposite sides of the battle that raged over the caravan. Outnumbered and overrun, eventually Culven sought out the elder Harrin brother and with the help of his crew took the life of Falvin, despite the fact that the battle was over and the defeated side had yielded. Culven had always dispised Falvin's fame and popularity in the town and took great pleasure in taking his life when the opportunity presented itself. Culven was considered a villian and a party was sent out to find Tait and once they had he was brought back to face trail for his crimes.

However, the Taits are well connected. Very few had the courage to testify, while many others had suddenly found that either their memories were too vague or simply did not want to become involved and refused to cooperate. Some even changed their stories completely, placing Tait in a more favorable light than the actual event would have indicated. The evidence that those who did testify was strong and even the best efforts to discount or dismiss their stories by the Tait defense were hopelessly weak. However, who knows what other influences the Taits had over the truth. In the end, Culven Tait was acquitted of any wrongdoing.

Darvik was furious and his heart was heavy with grief. He could not believe that Culven Tait was let go when it had seemed so obvious that he was a murderer, going as far as outright claiming that the trial was a sham and that the Taits had obviously bought the verdict. His mother was suddenly reclusive and wrecked emotionally while his father had seemingly aged decades in the matter of weeks. The loss of Falvin had been devestating to the entire family and soon the doors of the trading post would be all but closed if it were not for the work of his remaining brother, Narvok. However, what Darvik truly wanted was to go find Culven and make things right, one way or another. The only thing keeping him from doing so was his family.

A few weeks after the trial a parcel was delivered in secret to Darvik's hands. He had no idea where the package could have come from or who delivered it. Once alone, he curiously opened the box. Inside was a necklace with a charm on it. Darvik instantly recognized this! This belonged to Falvin! Darvik made this necklace himself as a good luck charm just before Falvin had went away. But how did it get here? Looking inside the box he found something else, a note. Reading the note, Darvik became sick to his stomach. The note bore the mark of Culven Tait. Ever the bully, he sent one of his men to deliver the necklace to Darvik as a message that you just do not take on a Tait and survive in the end.

Enraged, Darvik decided that Culven Tait must die. He told his brother of his intentions and his pleas for reason fell on deaf elven ears. Making his brother swear to protect the family and the store, Darvik made one last visit to Rizzy and tried to convince the man to help him on his quest. Rizzy refused, seeing that this was no more than bloodlust and he would not aid in his plan. Darvik was beyond reason and took the very rapier that his master had given him and run him through for refusing to help him. To this day, Darvik has no idea whether the man lived or died as he turned and fled, never to return. His lust for revenge and blinded his judgment forever. he still believed that if he found and killed Tait, no judge could possibly find him guilty of murder. He was simply taking the role of executioner upon himself.

Over decades Darvik searched for Culven Tait but the many years have taken its toll on the elf's soul. Many times Darvik wondered if Culven Tait had escaped his wrath, either by staying one step ahead of him or by lying six feet underneath, denying Darvik the chance to extract revenge. As fate would have it, by mere chance, Darvik had stumbled upon the man he had been seeking in a small tavern in Talingarde. After all the searching and all of the blood he had left behind him torturing and killing known and suspected associates of the Taits, Culven Tait simply sat in a chair drinking ale not twenty feet from him. Rage overcame the elf and without even a word of warning he struck down Tait where he sat in front of dozens of horrified onlookers. Darvik simply stood there, waiting for the relief and satisfaction of his deed to come rushing through him, but soon the guard came and took him away.

While he still had anger toward the justice system of Talingarde he still had reason to believe that today's judgment would be understanding. Obviously they would be sentimental to is plight, knowing that Tait's trial decades ago was a sham and understanding that the Taits were a family of ill-begotten wealth and power. Darvik had done society a great favor! Surely he would be acquitted just as Culven Tait had been all those years ago. Still, he had his doubts. The reach that the influence of the Tait could still be as strong today as it was back then. Nothing could be certain to Darvik.

However what Darvik did not understand was that the judge that presided over him today had no choice in the matter. Murder was murder, especially when conducted like an execution in the midst of a public place with dozens of jaw-dropped witnesses. As the verdict was read Darvik Harrin howled in disbelief. "How can you not see that I have delivered justice? He killed my brother! He told me himself!" Darvik grabbed the necklace he wore and displayed it in defiance of the room. "How can you not see the truth? The man told me himself! You will regret this! I will make sure that everyone will regret this day!"

Now Darvik sits in tattered rags in a cell awaiting his sentance. His soul was still black and again longs for revenge, but not for his brother's death, instead for his own. However, the only way he can take his revenge on those fools that sent him to this prison was to somehow leave the prison... something that is just not done. Darvik Harrin will die without finding the peace that he had sought all those decades ago. Or will he?
