Hi. I got the pdf copy of the Starfinder CRB on the date it was released and also got a copy of the AP. I've managed to create an Ysoki Mechanic and also took a look at some of the other classes/races and such.

But what I'm missing is an opportunity to see the rules put into action. I'm done watching youtube videos of other people playing and want to give it a try myself. I don't know if it's a good idea to start trying on the boards but I'll find out.

There are several issues with playing here. The most obvious is that there will be a lot of ranged fighting which makes maps and positioning important. Also for spaceship fights. And there will probably the need for a lot of discussions as the rules are rather new and I don't know them well enough to judge stuff without constantly looking up stuff. Which means looking up stuff in a book as google searches for rulings don't work well while there is no rules set online yet.

But I want to try anyway. Character creation rules are as stated in the book. No rolling, just standard 1st level characters. The rules suggest a five person party, so I'll run with that.

I'm interested in covering much of the options so I'd like five different races and classes. Themes I'd also like diversity, but I wouldn't throw out duplicates if the story behind it is good. Also I'd like the class match the prevalent ones for the race. Therefore I'd prefer an iconic Vesk Soldier over a Ysok one.

As this will start out as time consuming the start will be on the weekend. Roughly daytime CET. So if you want to join you should be able to post during that time. I don't exactly know how high the posting rate of the game will be in the long run. But I had quite some people drop out of my games because the rate was too high for them. Consider this before applying. Nothing wrong with posting not as much as some others. But if you don't even have the time to read the posts of the others then this is not for you.

For application please state Race/Theme/Class and a curriculum vitae (backstory) of your character including their motivation to apply to the Starfinder Society, as that is more or less the start of the adventure.

No full-fledged characters needed yet.

Dotting. I'll be applying with a Ysoki Mechanic (likely Spacefarer theme) or perhaps a human Envoy, if you were planning to GMPC your Ysoki Mechanic, GM.

Vesk/Bounty Hunter/Soldier
I am interested in seeing how well melee combat actually works in the new rule system, so I am planning a fighter focused on closing range, drawing fire. I don't plan on being able to actually do a huge amount of damage, but want to see how well having someone in melee can allow for better positioning on my ranged allies.

My biggest concern is that I feel I may be somewhat gimped in ship combat. That could also just be because I need to learn the rules a bit more and find something I will be useful at.

Will you be allowing the Pathfinder Legacy races as well? I have the idea to play an Elf Solarian, with likely either the Priest or Icon theme: a Forlorn who has dedicated himself to Sarenrae, and is trying to overcome the bitterness that's taken root in elven culture and forgive the other races of the galaxy, whilst bringing the Dawnflower's healing warmth to the innocent and her burning wrath to the wicked!

Basically wanna be as close to a Sarenite Paladin in Starfinder as I can get. : )

I'm not going to play my Ysoki Mechanic for now. But the one playing the mechanic with the drone will have to discuss with me a lot about options and why this and that, because I want to know that stuff in detail.

Archpaladin Zousha wrote:

No. This is about getting to know the new stuff.

Dotting, considering an Android Mercenary Operative

Thanks for hosting.

I'm currently GMing Dead Suns as a PBP on these boards; will this fact preclude me from being selected?

I'll of course do my very best to separate player and character knowledge but I understand if this is an issue.

If still selectable, I'm thinking of a lashunta soldier.

No problem. But your chances would increase dramatically if you choose another class. To be fair I tell you that the chances of J4RH34D not getting selected are pretty slim and he called dibs on the Vesk Soldier already.

Thanks for the quick response.

You are obviously an experienced GM so I'm surprised that you are going to select someone for a 2+ year game commitment because he happened to be on his computer and 'called dibs'.

Do you not take into consideration the player's posting history, reliability, posting style, etc.?

I get that you want 'iconics' so a soldier of another race different than vesk is not to be selected. I'm not sure I agree with this since there are plenty of other 'good soldiers' other than vesk but this is your game and you have the right to play with what you want.

However, will you not consider a different vesk soldier from another player?

is this a 'first come first served' game as long as you want to play 'iconics'?

Hi there! =)

In the interest of trying EVERYTHING out, I'll be submitting a human operative, with a Pilot theme.

I really like Operatives because they can really do everything, especially in Space Combat.

*teehee* And, yes, I do likey the fast posting rate. I've spoken about this, but the point remains that thousands of games have died because they were too slow, but few indeed die because they go too fast.

I'm kinda running that game that got 300 posts in its first week, so there's that. =)

For maps, will you be using Roll20? I certainly hope so. =)

Thanks for the clarification, GM. I was planning on going exocortex instead of drone. Would that be an issue?

The history is that J4RH34D is a friend of mine and it was clear that he will be playing if he applies before the thread started. And he called dibs on the Vesk Soldier. And I'm playin with him in other games up to 2 years already. That should answer the mayor part of your questions.

There is a preference on my side to see an Ysok Mechanic with a Drone in play, but beyond that I'm not set on seeing exactly the iconics.

Also I hate that I have to turn down players. Which has lead to me closing recruitment as soon as I have a group together. But I will try to not do this here, but give a chance to more players to apply.

And I tell you that with the soldier, because I'm nice ;)

If it is no issue for you I would prefer a build with the drone.

[Slowly pulling foot out of mouth]... :)

Ah, much better. Thank you for the response. I do the same thing; I play with proven players but I usually just flat out state so in the recruitment to avoid dumbasses from jumping to erroneous conclusions. :)

Ok, back to the application.

I'd like to play a lashunta/outlaw/mystic (mindbreaker) so I can explore the 'psionics' in the system/setting.

How long should this curriculum vitae be/ Are you looking for a couple of bullet points or a couple of paragraphs?

Thanks again.

Foxy, you are good at running your GMPC's. If fighting chicken is happy running his envoy, you could run your ysoki?

Atlas2112, Foxy and I are currently the 7th highest post count campaign on the boards. There are two of us in that game. Her and I.
We used to hit about 300 posts a weekend :P.

We now have 3 campaigns together I think, so the count has slowed slightly.

If someone is DESPERATE to run a soldier I can think of something else

As twin brothers who always argue about how to do it right? :D

The other big drawback is that there are no matching avatars yet.

Just an introduction so I get an idea about the character of the character.

Just out of curiosity. Y'know, for, ah, scientific purposes, where would you find that data? =)

Go to the play by post section of the boards and click on posts

Not required by any means. I have a backstory/personality of a lashunta who wants to follow in his family's footsteps and join the traditional shotalashu cavalry but gets on the wrong side of the law and has to leave Castrovel.

A soldier would have been my first choice but I'll make it work with another class. I usually don't worry too much about classes but really want to nail down the character first.

So all good and thanks for the offer.

Game on!

Just for me to keep the overview

J4RH34D - Vesk Soldier
Fabian Benavente - Lashunta <class open>
Fighting Chicken - Ysoki Mechanic
ScorchedOne - Android Mercenary Operative
Atlas2112 - Everything that is left ;)

and maybe
Archpaladin Zousha - Elf Solarian
id he can get used to the thought of diong that with one of the new races.

I thought Ysoki would be no problem to find something. But there are only 5 ratfolk avatars!

Fillable character sheet and Boreal WIP

I am looking at changing theme, but otherwise still Android Operative. Because it's fun. Might go Themeless or Scholar.

Any room left in this one? I post alot (Ask Atlas).

It is getting crowded but the recruiting is still open.

Liberty's Edge

1) Hi there! =)
Character submission from Atlas2112!

2) I just need to change the Theme. If we'll be having lots and lots of starship combat (and, if have the choice to have starship combat, why wouldn't you have lots of it? It's like saying "No more cheesecake for me" or "Didn't we watch football last week?" or "But I already have a pair of black pants.") I'll go Theme: Pilot, and for my first Exploit I'll look really hard at Uncanny Pilot because of course we need to Evade more. ^_^

3) Yes! GM Niles does indeed post a lot. Much even. Now that I think on it he gave me my current philosophy of "ABP"
Always
Be
Posting.

(The Description for my campaign is "Post now! Like, right now!" =)

4) Allison is a spunky firecracker that's never really comfortable unless she's got some hot metal either under her stick or in her hand. Her caustic wit is omnipresent, largely due to her constant desire to make whatever she's doing somehow seem MORE EXCITING!!1!
Hence, she gets bored easily, and while she's as comfortable talking her way out of a situation as blasting through it, she may need convincing to do it the boring way. =)

5) Shameless self-promotion: Since this is a competition, not only do I post fast, but the handsome, smart, and famous GM Niles himself has said that I'm "creative and funny" and my posts are often Favorited by others.

GM Niles:

What can I say? I like the nickname Wraith. I stumbled across it when I made a Jagged Alliance 2 character, and, so far, every time I've used it has helped me take the character's RP up to 11. If it ain't broke.... =)

Allison "Wraith" WhiteAngel wrote:

I'll go Theme: Pilot...

Piloting(Dex) +4;4+0 C

I suggest putting a rank in the pilot skill then ;)

I don't have a character made right this moment. But I do have "ideas"...

Idea #1) Tough as nails bounty hunter operative (Gonna be an Android, or Human...) Totally not copying a very well established noir trope at all. Nope, not gonna do it.

Idea #2) Increasingly chatty and exceptionally curious Shirren Mystic Priest of Hylax (Bow before the most exceptional Hive Queen of Being Nice to Everyone!)

Idea #3) Stuck up socially stunted Human Scholar Technomancer. "Yeah, I can do that. IS that ALL? Sheesh. It's a simple matter of swapping the duobiased gigaholmsian haploids while simultaneously backdooring the tripartite jian-jing processor. Gods. Why would you ask something so simple of me?" Literally a character devoted to this meme... Or this one

Now that I think of it...

I really wanna do #3

Liberty's Edge

Oooo! Absolutely do #3! Then I can have a secret crush on you, flirting with you outrageously while all you do is correct my grammar. But we get along well whenever we make cooperative Computer rolls.... =p

Also, I guess Deckard isn't a replicant now since apparently he lived to be an old man??

Aaaand done!

I already winced at Allison taking human. But human is a core race so it is a fair choice as I didn't exclude it. But in your case the requirement from post one comes into play:

Foxy wrote:

Edit: For a good love story - as suggested by Allison - I'd make an exception.

Does the android dream of electric Allison's?

An android human love could be fun :P

If it is no issue for you I would prefer a build with the drone.

OK, I can do that. Next question - none of the themes are exactly what I was looking for. Would you allow the scholar theme to include someone who's bright but entirely self-taught, without any formal education?

Foxy Quickpaw wrote:

I don't usually play pet classes, so if I am selected, this would be very helpful.

I'm interested to hear about that one.

Just enough that I get an idea what he/she will be like.

"Princess Leia, you can't do that. Please come back, the protocoll..." C3PO walks wobbly after the princess. Ok that is cheating, because everyone knows C3PO, but you get the idea.

How quickly things change... I suppose I won't go Scholar then. Outlaw it is.

There is nothing written as to where you get your education. So why not?

You give me a line or two about your mechanic roleplay wise?

The schemes are only slight bonus things with a backstory hook. If you want scholar, go scholar. The bigger issue is that Allison offered a pretty interesting pilot based on operative.

About the introductions: Allison and Niles Nailed it. Short summary about the character with a phrase thrown in, giving an idea what the character will be about. And that is a stage where we can discuss who will be what. And how to solve conflicts if there are doubles.

The mechanics behind it need to be filled out later, but at first they are not what will get you selected. And the full mechanics are a lot of work to be scrapped if you're not lucky.

"I always offer the choice of surrender. I prefer it when I get to kill them though." the hulking Vesk says with a sneer.

Boreal is a proud fighter who takes his fighting seriously. However he feels it is only honourable to fight when the situation calls for it. He felt the best way to ensure that he could encounter many situations where fighting was called for, was to become a bounty hunter. The money was a secondary concern.

He is rather dismissive of anyone who can't fight half decently without relying on something else. He is not interested in academics or technology beyond how it can help him fight better, or track his next target.

If someone shows him their talent in combat her will likely reevaluate his opinion of them. He may even become friendly to those he thinks fight exceptionally well.

As a bounty hunter he has spent many hours in the underbelly of society and it has rubbed off on him. He is gruff and rough and more likely to insult you and threaten than ask nicely.

Meh, I think perhaps I will bow out then, I'm uncertain whether I can actually adhere to the stringent posting requirements especially this weekend, as I will be at a con all the live-long day.

Glitch sits in the pilot seat of the space ship, but it takes like forever until the Rift-Engine comes up. "What are you doing at this console." he asks getting out of the seat to check. "Let me take a look - You're doing this wrong, see the Heisenberg Coils are not calibrated, you energize that first and then go into overdrive..." And soon Glitch is immersed in the ships settings, his fingers flying over the console tweaking this and that to reach the optimum. The empty piloting seat taken by someone else.

Liberty's Edge

"Oooo, this seat feels like it was made for me. And it's still warm!" Allison coos as she slinks into the seat that recently held Glitch.
"And why are the Heisenberg Coils energized? They suck juice from the afterburners and you can't pull heavy-Gs as much. Sure it makes your passengers feel like their tummies are are trying to secede from the union, but when did thinking about other people ever stop me?"

Please consider Soryn, male damasha lashunta, for inclusion in your game.

I changed his connection from mindbreaker to xenodruid.

His crunch should be finished in his alias and his fluff is spoilered below but it's still a work in progress.

I'm waiting for new images to select a better 'avatar'.

Let me know if you have any questions/comments.

Thanks for hosting.

Game on!

fluff:

*physical description
- lithe, stringy body leaning towards thin
- rough face, too much time outdoors
- racial marks on his face looks like a leaf pattern
- well-used outdoors clothes with many pockets
- hunting rifle slung over shoulder, knife on his hip, warm smile on his face

*quirks/habits that define your PC
- very curious around insectoids (father side, see below)
- talks slowly as if there was no hurry in the world
- has lots of patience and is a natural mediator
- cares deeply about all life, believes natural life can do no evil but understands about survival
- loves to learn about new biological entities
- becomes nervous when people ask him about his home in Castrovel
- is afraid that any lashunta may be out to bring him back to answer for his ‘crime’

*background/defining life events
- his father was in the diplomatic team that made peace with the formians and has been an influence for both his curiosity about insectoids and his passion for a peaceful resolution to conflict
- he had a strong calling to the preservation of nature and was secretly trained by a xenowarden
- his mother was shotalashu rider and was training him so that her reptile steed would bond with Soryn once she retired
- the reptile steed ‘spoke’ to him and told him that it had served long enough and wanted to go back to the wilds (at least that’s what Soryn says) so he freed it
- needless to say, that did not go well with the shotalashus (especially his mother)
- his family was shamed and he was helped by the xenowarden to evade authorities and head off-world
- the Starfinder Society headquartered in Absalom Station sounded like the perfect place to go

I am curious as to what time zone, and where everyone is from.

I am from South Africa. Gmt+2

So far it doesn't look like there is a stampede of players to overrun this recruitment.

So far we have:
Boreal Typhon - A vesk soldier bountyhunter
Allison "Wraith" WhiteAngel - A human operative ace pilot
Soryn - A lashunta mystic xenodruid outlaw

What we might get:
Niles' Technomancer
Fighting Chicken's Ysoki Mechanic

What we might not get anymore
An android from ScorchedOne.

Another interesting thing to clarify would be roles in ship combat.
Captain, Engineer, Pilot, Gunner, Science Officer

From what I have seen in the character sheets so far I'd guess
Allison - Pilot

But that is just for you to tell your interest. If you start in game to brawl about who gets to steer the ship, or do a rotating plan who has to man the unloved position of science officer is up to you.
