Round 1:

Will Save DC16: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

Horrible memories flood into Nidhi's mind. Nidhi is back in Wati, escorting a caravan of goods for Adbur - when sharp teeth piercing into her side! Then, she's off the ground, her body violently jerking from side to side. No. No. No. No.

Nidhi Aashirya (flashback) wrote:

Nidhi is knocked unconcious by the beast and blood starts pouring out of the bite and scratch marks.

As the beast jerks at Nidhi's wound, her blood splatters left and right, spraying anyone nearby. Her cloak is quickly turning from white to red. Nidhi's heavy braid repeatedly smacks the ground as the beast thrashes her body about.

(link to post)

Panicked with Fear: 1d4 ⇒ 1

Run Direction (1 left, 2 right): 1d2 ⇒ 1

Difficult terrain? Nidhi drops her Everburning Torch and flees back towards the elevator. She nearly trips over her own traveling cloak as she stumbles ungracefully in the dark. No. No. No.

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

Benedictus warns the party and begins summoning!

The hounds rush to attack - running up and trying to harm Zilchus and Cahal.

Green on Cahal: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20 damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 trip: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16
Blue on Zilchus: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21 damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 trip: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23

- Round 1-
Hounds - 24
Benedictus - 23
Nidhi - 19
Cahal - 18 (-8hp)
Florence - 17
Zilchus - 11 (-6hp, tripped?)

Next up - everyone, though Florence, Nidhi, and Benedictus have already gone. As we discussed offline, Benedictus does not quite get his magic missile off - but we’re leaving the rolls for next round. ;)

DC 25 knowledge planes or Benedictus:
The creatures have no DR, they baying they just did to cause fear is their only special attack, and that's all you learn so far.

Oh, they also have Shadow blend!

Shadow Blend (Su) In any condition of illumination other than full daylight, a shadow mastiff disappears into the shadows, giving it concealment (50% miss chance). Artificial illumination, even a light or continual flame spell, does not negate this ability; a daylight spell, however, does. A shadow mastiff can suspend or resume this ability as a free action.

Neutral Human Bard/14

Round 2, Initiative 19:

Nidhi quivers in the elevator like a ninny. When she's able to control her shaking, she begins to sing - more for her benefit than anyone else's. (1/17 Inspire Courage) She begins softly, gaining strength the longer she sings. As her move action, Nidhi will try to make it back to her companions.

Acrobatics (incline): 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 8 + 2 = 12 Do we still need to roll for this?
Nidhi moves 15 feet?

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

As Benedictus' elementals attack, you learn of another 'feature'. The shadowy mastiffs are in fact just that - shadowy. As a result they have a 50% miss chance on all attacks even though they're being back-lit by the elementals and front-lit by your own light sources.

#2 Slam: 1d100 ⇒ 72 high is good for you
#4 Slam: 1d100 ⇒ 98 high is good for you
#5 Slam: 1d100 ⇒ 22 high is good for you

So two attacks got through the maelstrom that is the elemental wave both on the 'green' hound.

Yes you need to roll acrobatics for the incline, and the doors to the ladder are closed so you'll need to open those as well when you get there. Further the whole room is, as you say, difficult terrain due to the ramps and bones.

So Nidhi and Florence are at the doors, but they are still shut as of this round.

Nidhi - your whole round is spent fleeing, so you make it to the doors, but no singing until next round. Don't post too far ahead. I lose track. :)

Round 1, Initiative 17

Florence turns and flees after Nidhi, her longspear clattering to the floor as she releases her grip on it.

"I can't! Imsorryimsorryimsorry!" she shrieks, leaving the rest of the group to their fates...

Acrobatics (If Needed On the Run to the Doors): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

Cahal feels her gut twisted and her mouth dries as she realizes that this is just too much for her. Too many, too dark, too powerful.

Without hesitating, she turns around and she bolts for the ladder.

Benedictus finishes his summoning and a slew of fire elementals appear providing flank, and dealing some damage in their own right. Nidhi is panicked with fear for one round and flees as far as the doors. Cahal also flees, but as the doors are closed, she only gets up to the doors. Florence is also afraid, though for a little longer, and flees to the doors this round. Zilchus slams the door shut on the hounds and stands up.

Nidhi end the fear on her friends. Florence casts Heroism on Zilchus who falls back. Benedictus delays until after the party has moved, and then casts grease on the floor. His elementals do well, but behind the door it’s hard to know who’s winning. Cahal delays for DM convenience, and complains, ”Why are we not attacking? "Yeah, why the grease?" Zilchus asks. "I guess we'll wait for the grease to go, then try to get back in there? Do we have any better light? Those things seemed pretty shady."

He casts Magic Circle Against Evil on himself, pairing nicely with the heroism. He also attaches his weapon cord, readying for possibility for being dragged off his feet again.

Ben seems to be quite satisfied with his plan.

"Don’t be ever so rash, my friends. Careful planning and patience can also win a battle!

Zilchus wonders how Ben could be so smart yet so less-so at some times.

"Ben, you saw how the dogs dragged me off my feet? And you want me to waddle into then stand upon the grease to open the door? How are you thinking that's a good idea...let alone tossing off a fireball in there! Might be books we need!"

Zilchus looks at Cahal to see if she wants to stand in the grease while dogs try to take them down.

Seeing that everyone seems to be gathering and preparing themselves to try and tackle the hounds on their terms, Florence moves into the hallway junction to join them.

"But I don't really have any better ideas besides wait for the grease to fade and then let Cahal and Zilchus beat everything to death," she admits as she further works to bolster herself and her friends.

He could not even concentrate anymore. Having to fight against shadows mastiffs was not an easy task in itself, but having to fight against the distrust of one’s friends is even harder.

How can they think I don’t know what I am doing? Did I ever let them down?!

For a moment, he feels enraged, and frustrated.

Shut up! Your remarks are futile, since are based on your ignorance of magic. Only a kid would think that a fireball would damage the books…It takes some huge stupi…Gah, you know what?! Have it your way!

Ben stops his casting and dispels the grease instead. He casts no fireball, although it would have not damaged the books and scrolls. “Come on, go on and show everyone how strong and powerful you are! Solve problems as an ignorant peasant would, go on! Differently from you, I trust you to succeed!

Ben moves away, feeling a strange sense of rage filling his soul.

Their minds are so limited…

Round 4, continued:

After recovering from her fear, Nidhi returns to the fight, having missed a few things.

Prof. Benedictus Dickens wrote:

“Shut up! Your remarks are futile, since are based on your ignorance of magic. Only a kid would think that a fireball would damage the books…It takes some huge stupi…Gah, you know what?! Have it your way!”

Ben stops his casting and dispels the grease instead. He casts no fireball, although it would have not damaged the books and scrolls. “Come on, go on and show everyone how strong and powerful you are!”

Nidhi trusts Zilchus to strike down evil but is also enjoying Ben siding against Zilchus. That's right, Ben is powerful in ways Zilchus will never be. ...Maybe I can focus Muminofrah's attention on Ben. Take away Zil's diplomatic powers... Nidhi conspires: Ben will blush and then I'll do all the talking!

Perhaps inspired by Ben’s own words, Nidhi cheers ”Yes! Be the man Muminofrah believes you to be! Show us what you’ve got!” Nidhi stares at Zilchus’ back intently, waiting for something spectacular to happen. Nidhi is smiling, clearly entertained and not frightened with Zilchus standing between her and their enemies.

Lols. Yes, take away *all* of Z's 'diplomatic powers'...the grunting, the groin scratching, the chest bumping...all of it...

Zilchus waits for the grease to subside, wondering why people continue to cast spells.

Nidhi continues to inspire courage as she takes out her bow. Florence ready’s to cast glitter dust, but the door does not open this round, and so her ready does not go off. Zilchus waits for the grease to recede. Benedictus angrily dispels the grease. Cahal delays to the top of the next round losing her action.

The hounds bark and scratch at the door, trying to get through, but they cannot. The door stands firmly in their way and their attacks upon it do no effective damage.

At the top of round 5, Cahal walks up to the door (acrobatics check automatically made) and opens it, revealing the hounds, ready to pounce!

The door is now open.

For a moment, Benedictus seems to seriously consider the option of letting his friends deal with the shadow mastiffs, as they wanted to. His rage and frustration though is not enough to erase his concern for their health completely. Shaking his head, Ben moves back into the corridor. He puts his hand on Nidhi's shoulder and smiles at her.

She is the only one who did not discredit me completely...

After that, Ben moves behind Nidhi and points his wand at the enemies, causing four magic missiles to crash onto the hounds.

Using the same roll I made above as agreed with the GM.

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

Nidhi's arrow: 1d100 ⇒ 49 high is good for the party
Zilchus' strike: 1d100 ⇒ 8 high is good for the party

Neither strike hits as the shadowy creatures seem both there and not there as you swing and shoot.

blue will: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
red will: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

...and blue is blinded!

Also, everyone - please remember when moving in this chamber, you need an acrobatics DC 10 to move at half speed (DC 15 to move at full speed) or you fall and slide to the end of the corridor. I dunno, maybe you all invested heavily in acrobatics and can make it like Cahal automatically. :)

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

Cahal moves up and flings open the door! Nidhi launches an arrow that misses in the inky battle. Florence tries a glitterdust on the front pair. Zilchus swings and also misses. Benedictus finally looses his magic missiles, but which one? I’ll say blue as it’s directly across from him.

Green snarls and tries to get at Cahal around the corner but cannot (door’s in the way). Blue is blinded and howls unhappily as it snaps at Cahal.
Blue bite on Cahal: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23 damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 trip: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24 high is good for Cahal: 1d100 ⇒ 19
Blue tail slap on Cahal: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18 damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 high is good for Cahal: 1d100 ⇒ 62

Finally, red is clear to attack Zilchus with a will - snarling and nearly foaming at the mouth in anticipation.
Red bite on Zilchus: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12 damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 trip: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
Red tail slap on Zilchus: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

blue will for blindness: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

Though blue remains blinded, he did get a bite in and dragged Cahal to the ground. Cahal, at the top of the round, quickly stands (provoking just one AoO) and returns the attack.

Red bite on Cahal: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23 damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

Cahal punch on Red: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28 damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11 high is good for Cahal: 1d100 ⇒ 61

⁞⁞⁞⁞ ROUND 6 ⁞⁞⁞⁞

‖‖‖‖‖‖‖‖ • Initiative: 23 • ‖‖‖‖‖‖‖‖

Ben is still undecided whether to keep supporting the group with his spell or to leave Cahal and Zilchus do their job as they insisted. The scholar calmly considers his options as the battle rages in front of him, and he decides quite soon that he is not going to be using other spells from his personal reserve of arcane energies. When he starts considering his other tools, Ben thinks about the grease wand in his pocket and grins a bit maniacally.

Imagine what would happen if I use this now…They would get totally mad!

Ben chuckles, but suddenly stops. No one should see him thinking about that, nor guess his intentions. A laugh betrays him though: half amused and half manic, his smile is a bit creepy, should someone look at it. But fortunately, everyone is looking at the battle and turning their back to Ben.

Come on, I deserve to have a bit of fun! Moreover, they deserved it for how they ridiculed me! No one ridicules Benedictus West Dickens. All who did have seen their dreams and hopes shatter in front of their eyes.

Ben scrunches his nose in anger and pulls out the wand of grease from his pocket. He points both the wands he is holding at the shadow mastiffs, as though holding a gun in each hand and starts moving them up and down alternatively as he lets the fate decide about his actions.

Eeney-meeney, miny-mo, catch a tiger by the toe, if he squeals let him go, eeney-meeney, miny...MO!

Ben laughs and uses his wand of magic missile.

Target is the red hound. (CL 7th, 48 charges remaining).

1st missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
2nd missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
3rd missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
4th missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Of course, the result of such a trivial game was already clear in his mind with only two variables. But that was fun anyway. The only problem is that his friends don’t know that he knew beforehand, but they don’t even know what the second wand is for either, and for that matter, they don’t even know what he’s doing back there, in the rear of the group…

Round 6, Initiative 17

With few other offensive options available and not wanting to risk blinding Zilchus and Cahal with more glitter, Florence draws out the wand she'd purchased days ago and takes aim at Red. "Here's hoping this works..." she mutters as she speaks the command word and blasts the creature with a scream that only it can hear.

Ear-Piercing Scream vs. Red (CL 4th): 2d6 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2

Then she can hear Ben's rather odd recitation of nursery rhymes from behind her but doesn't think much more of it because Ben's a rather odd duck at times and she's come to expect some unusual behavior from the eccentric scholar.

Maybe it's some kind of memory thing for spellcasting?

Binded blue presses his attacks on Cahal… he can smell her scent and hungers for the flesh.
