***OVERSEER ANNOUNCEMENT***
It is difficult to tell how much time has passed through the smothering canopy as Medda addresses the regrouped Pathfinder and Twinhorn forces. “The ancient battlefield is just beyond those trees. There, Ivvora and her comrades scattered an undead army, but the necromantic taint never left this land. Instead, the plants and animals have gradually absorbed the evil, encouraged by someone calling herself Mother Bloodleaf.
“We must strike as one, simultaneously attacking the corruption’s heart as well as the seedpods spread out around the swamp. Their destruction will unleash harmful energies, so we of the Twinhorn following shall head toward the center to ritually disperse that energy to keep it from festering anew! Each team should follow its Twinhorn mystic to an intended target, and from there, three blasts of a horn shall signal our attack. May Vildeis bless us as she did Ivvora before us!”
Medda, the Twinhorns, and the Pathfinders spread out and make their way through the woods to their striking positions. Even though much of the forest withers from some evil curse, eager faces flow from tree to tree as the friendly, whispering spirits encourage their would-be saviors onward.
Three blasts of a war-horn echo across the heavily forested battleground. As the Pathfinders rush toward their targets, startled figures with purple glowing eyes hurry toward the seedpods and the enormous dark flower at the heart of the swamp. A shriek carries over the battleground. “What treachery is this? My minions have fallen without so much as warning me? No matter, I shall rip out any trespassers’ souls and feed them to the blight!”
Table GMs, the Unaware Guardians and Helpful Spirits effects are in effect (see the Guardians and Spirits sidebar on page 39), and the way to area Q is now open. Please move to that encounter area quickly.
The Man Behind the Curtain |
The "satyr" leaps up and starts running. "This way! I think everyone is here who needs to be!"
You follow him for several minutes winding through horrid vines and undergrowth, with encouraging spirits marking the path. Suddenly, the path opens up into a clearing where on a forking path, a trio of monsterous brambles hurry to intercept you... lead by an old orcish hag. The spirits all whisper a name... "Bloodleaf..."
The ancient battleground has turned into a fetid swamp that fills the air with the scent of death and decay. Rusted weapons jut out from the patches of solid land. Here and there, skeletal remains and grimacing skulls clad in ruined iron peek out from the glowing mire. A seedpod pulsing with purplish energy grows on an islet across the swamp.
The calm spirit appears before you... "Guide us and the trees shall open paths to you that our foes shall not be able to navigate."
Pick any 2 trees on the map with 60 ft of each other. A portal will appear between those 2 trees that only you can pass through. Spell effects do not pass through the portal, however it does not cost additional movement to make the leap, nor does it end your movement. If you succeed at a DC 33 Knowledge (Nature) or Spellcraft check (no action, part of initiative), the trees can instead be 120 ft apart. Only 1 of you can attempt this check, nobody can aid. I'll post initiative tonight, but you can also attempt knowledge checks to ID the monsters.

I'd say any buff with a duration of an hour or more you would have had time to prep. After that, you were led on 10-20 minute hike and suddenly happened upon the scene you see now.
Any square with green is difficult terrain. The log is ~5 ft in diameter and must be climbed or jumped over. Trees provide cover.

Laara attempts to pummel it, but finds the stalks and branches incredibly tough. Finally, one punch causes a break in a root, but not particularly major. Only the last attack hit. Some DR applied.
And yes it can be sneak attacked. As she finishes her barrage she quickly determines that this plant has been holding still very carefully... waiting for a victim. And it appears as though the victim is Laara! Vines whip up from the ground and begin to grab at her!

Seeing the big lotus try to squeeze the life out of Laara, Chak decides to first do something about that. He reads a scroll which covers his body in a layer of grease.
The Man Behind the Curtain |
Yami quickly hops through the portal and retrieve's Laara before she becomes fertilizer. Holly and Chak prepare for what appears to be a tough fight ahead.
The hulking mounds of vines slowly lumber forward, but they seem to have been caught off guard by the party's sudden arrival and don't make much headway.
Mother bloodleaf on the other hand, while out of breath, has a clear idea on how to handle the interlopers, and brings forth all of the corruption and blight in this land from the ground into a stinking green cloud.
Cloudkill, DC 17. At the beginning of each of your turns, if you are in the cloud you take 1d4 con damage, fort save for half. The cloud also obscured vision and spreads like a fog cloud. Laara, feel free to wait for Exi's action before you make said rolls.

Yami is enveloped by the nasty cloud and also coughs. The wayang moves out of the cloud to the north and utters a blasphemy so terrible that time itself seems to stand still for the wizard.
As the flow of time struggles to recover its aplomb, Yami uses this stutter in time to complete a full casting of a spell; summoning forth a rather ditzy-looking angelic creature with wind-tossed hair. The wayang looks like he swallowed a lemon, and the creature looks like it would prefer to shovel manure than listen to this creepy necromancer. "There is an unconscious woman in that cloud over there," Yami tells the celestial. "Go do something useful and heal her." Looking relieved to leave his presence, the creature moves into the cloud and casts healing magic upon Laara. The wayang shouts into the cloud at Chak, "Drag Laara out of there! The cloud will move away from that witch, come out in this direction!"
Yami has zero useful healing abilities, so this will require a bit of shenanigans. He will use his time stutter arcane discovery to gain a round of time stop; during which he will summon a bralani azata using his arcane bond to cast summon monster V. The azata appears immediately upon the expiration of the time stutter and is able to act, casting cure serious wounds on Laara. Yami defaults the spellcraft roll to know the mechanics of cloudkill.

Holly leaps forward and slashes at one of the shambling mounds, but she finds her weapon's holy blessing has no effect on them. The blight seems to be more of a disease or malady, and the creatures themselves have no infernal nor abyssal blessings of their own (they are Neutral, so no damage from the holy enhancement). Mother Bloodleaf on the other hand... her soul's status is quite clear.
The Azata bestowes his curative magics on Laara, but Yami is fairly certain he's going to pay a price for this blasphemy later. Laara regains consciousness, but is certainly not... out of the woods yet... heh... heh...

As Laara regains her composure and Fandral leaps to action, the heart of the blight begins to slowly make its way down the path towards the party.

"Well, go do whatever it is that you...good...things do," the wayang curses at the Azata as he extricates himself back onto the path; who gives a flippant hair toss while coughing slightly from the fog. Yami, your square was not entirely green, so I'm declaring that the swamp's edge. Mostly because I forgot to note it earlier. Being IN the swamp is a bit nastier. Unfortunately, intimidate to demoralize has a range of 30 ft. I will say though, fireball to the face is best counterspell.
