Holly walks over to Fandral and helps Chak in looking him over and providing healing as needed. Looking at the frozen dwarf Holly muses to her compatriots "Do you think we should make arrangements to remove her?"

Hearing Laara's question Holly turns. "If there are others who still need our assistance then we should lend it. Let it not be said that we stood idly by why others still fought."

Laara follow's Holly's gaze towards the dwarf. Hmm. Dunno. I'm no priest, but if this is the dwarf, she killed the first dragon, no? Maybe this is how'd she'd wanna be buried. The brawler shrugs. Or maybe she just got stuck in a bad spot before she could go back to her clan. Point is, there's enough ways to make an undead that'd I rather check with a cleric first.

She moves back towards the cave entrance - and leans down to whisper to Yami By the way, beautiful shot - and readies herself to stop anyone not weilding a ghost or wearing the Glyph of the Open Road from coming through.

GM, will be making slight assumptions on things. But hey, it is a bucket list item.

Yami pulls out a rather large expensive looking obsidian gem along with several other smaller ones. He crushes them while uttering powerful arcane words and throws the dust over the dragon's body. The wayang turns around, and makes a hauling motion over his shoulder; much like pulling a rope attached to a large object. The dragon's skeleton jerks abruptly out of its body in an incredibly messy shower of gore that splatters everywhere, standing on its own volition as purple runes of energy sink into its bones.

The skeleton starts to move menacingly, its spirit too powerful for Yami to control...until he shouts "COMMAND UNDEAD!" at it; blasting it with necromantic magic. The skeleton stops, now under the necromancer's control. The wayang beckons to the dragon skeleton, which lowers its skull submissively to listen.

"Go two caverns west and one to the north, my glorious minion. Assist any living creatures bearing this symbol," Yami orders while pointing at one of his allies' wayfinders. "Follow their requests as you would mine. If any of them hurt you with painful light, feel free to sit on them until they stop."

Yami casts animate dead, immediately followed by command undead; since it animates as a mindless undead it automatically fails the will saving throw on the command spell.

***OVERSEER ANNOUNCEMENT***

With the dragons defeated and their kobolds fleeing, the Pathfinders assemble in the deep cave. With her phantom Anok in tow, Medda approaches the frozen column and brushes away the outer layer of frost. Frozen within the column is a dwarven woman in steel armor, her body torn as if by immense claws. With her hand pressed against the ice, Medda pleads. “Ivvora, I have found you. Now what? Vildeis said to find you and that you would help me, but how can we help you in this state?”

“You look to me when you should look to the evil that stalks our homeland. It is not I who needs help,” declares a voice that is both sweet as music and powerful as a thunderstorm. The frost melts away from the column, revealing dozens of clear facets that dribble melt water as if from open wounds. The image of a wounded angelic figure reflects in each facet, simultaneously warming the chamber and judging all that the angel sees. “As you can see, I serve Vildeis more directly than before.” The images look to Anok. “I see you took your oath seriously, Anok. I was wrong to have doubted your conviction. How are our people?”

The red phantom’s hue turns rosier as he looks to Medda and responds, “You would be proud.”

With a nod, the angel addresses everyone at once. “Then why do you seek me?”

“Eshimka has returned,” Medda announces. “We fought off the horror once, but it shall return at the next solstice.”

The angel’s eyes flare with righteous fire. “Then you will need a weapon to defeat it, as I had. Vildeis granted me the blade that I gave your people, but only after I thought I had given everything to vanquish my greatest foe. Even now I can sense evil has returned to that land, far to the south in a forest where the Whispering Tyrant’s legions once ruled. Show our patron Vildeis the same dedication that I did, and I shall ask that she equip you in the same way.” With that, the angelic images fade from the melting column.

Medda addresses the gathered Pathfinders. “I believe I know the forests Ivvora mentioned. You have already done so much, Pathfinders, but I invite you to help more. After I give Ivvora the burial she deserves, I will set forth with all who are able and willing for the Fangwood.”

---------End of Part 4---------

The long journey south from the slopes of the Tusk Mountains to the edge of Fangwood took several weeks, during which many of the Twinhorns and Pathfinders exchanged ancestral stories and tales of daring adventures to pass the time on the relatively uneventful trek. By the time the Fangwood rises ahead in the brisk morning air, both groups are eager to confront whatever lies ahead.

Medda addresses the crowd gathered before her. “South of here lies a battlefield where the paladin Ivvora risked her life in a daring ploy to help her battalion defeat an undead horde. For her selflessness, Ivvora earned a token of Vildeis’s favor: the dagger she used to deal a terrible blow to Eshimka! For all the crusaders’ heroism, I can sense an undead taint lingered here, and that stretch of the Fangwood has expanded in the centuries since to absorb it. It is now our turn to earn Vildeis’s blessing, risking ourselves to end this threat so that in turn we might slay Eshimka once and for all.

“The terrain favors small groups over larger formations, so we shall divide into smaller groups to navigate the forest and identify the corruption’s heart. May Ivvora’s example guide us to victory!” With that, Medda and her phantom Anok turn and enter the Fangwood, followed by Pathfinder and Twinhorn teams that fan out behind her.

Table GMs, please narrate any unfinished business in Part 4 and move to Part 5. Once the PCs have cleared the brambles Area O is now accessible.

Several weeks have passed, feel free to recast your daily buffs before beginning this section.

Brambles grow wild throughout the edge of the wood where a thick canopy of trees begins to filter out sunlight, turning day into night. The overgrown plant life forbids easy access deeper into the forest and fills the air with the sickly-sweet smell of decay.

To safely navigate this stretch you'll need to succeed at an Acrobatics, Climb, Handle Animal, Knowledge (Nature), Survival, or Wild Empathy check. If anyone has the Woodland Stride class feature or a similar ability, you get +4 to this check.

That will actually turn your failure into a success! And gives me enough info to let you all resolve the remaining rolls as we move into the next area...

Exi begins asking a few questions to the plants around him and find that they are all rather... Spiteful? Gloomy? Sick? Every once in a while when taking a step he gets a somewhat angry sense, causing him to pause and rethink his passage... although given the lack of intelligence in the plants the info is usually at the last second.

Yami and Chak, Make your save rolls, then open this spoiler:

Repeated contact with blighted plants leaves you feeling rather ill. You are sickened for the next encounter, Reflex DC 20 or Fort DC 23 (The save you just attempted) negates this.

Travel time, 20 minutes.

The forest floor is blanketed with eerie dark flowers that paint the otherwise lightless woods with their purple incandescence. Disorienting paths cut through the trees, forward-facing paths seem to lead back to where they started, and retracing one's steps leads to unfamiliar terrain. Glowing eyes glare hungrily from within the impenetrable thickets where the vines slowly curl around anyone who gets too close.

After another dozen paces, the glowing eyes become a bit more widely spaced... and carry a different hue... and the plants seem a touch more rigid. Suddenly, an entire swath of the grasping vines begins to rise... and other on your other flank! You all leap into action as the form of a pair of enormous spiders rises from the brambles!

Reflex Save: 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 7 - 2 = 6

"Ow." The wayang gets stomped by a spider leg. With a snap of Yami's fingers, he unleashes a barrage of purple glowing skulls upon the previously-icy spider.

Yami casts a quickened magic missile at Red Spider, dealing 5d4 + 5 ⇒ (3, 2, 4, 3, 2) + 5 = 19 force damage. Quickened spells do not provoke.

Casting Defensively: 1d20 + 10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 10 + 7 = 23

Yami adjusts northwards 5-feet and then pulls out a white dragon scale from the dragon they defeated earlier. He crushes it while speaking some arcane words, and abruptly breathes out a large gout of ice shards. "Take it down quickly! I will not be able to get away safely before it attacks again!" the wayang says as cold mist seeps from his mouth.

Yami casts dragon's breath in a 30 foot cone, originating at the southeast corner of his square; this orientation should catch both spiders. DC 21 Reflex save for half, Cold Damage: 10d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 5, 1, 5, 6, 4, 5, 5, 5) = 41

Chak simply stands in front of the oncoming colossal spider with his blade at the ready. When the dust clears, an array of thin gashes leak ichor from 4 of the 8 legs. Crit confirmed! I'll leave that full attack pending other AoOs.

Exi attempts to hamper the movement of the spiders before trying to get further away...

Will (Red, Green): 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 4 - 2 = 81d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

Both of them look as though they are walking across a sap-covered floor as neither are able to resist the spell, although that doesn't stop them from attempting to make a small snack out of Starlight.

Exi, are you and starlight merged right now?

Yami peppers the wounded one with a barrage of magic missiles, then blasts them both with a cone of piercing shards of ice.

Reflex (Red, Green): 1d20 + 5 - 2 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 5 - 2 - 2 = 21d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 5 - 2 = 15

The ice chill the spiders to the core, killing one and wounding the other. Finally Chak... with the precision of a master tactician, methodology of a scholar, and fury of a soldier... slices it to pieces.

Combat over! Need to resolve reflex saves vs trample still, but out of initiative now.

Looks like I forgot to declare Starlight’s action beyond moving her token with mine. Are we in reach of the spiders (60’ from the ground + 25’ horizontally)? I tried to get us out of their reach. But If we are, I didn’t say we merged, so an attack on her is fair. I’ll immediate-action cast Emergency Force Sphere though if it looks like one could potentially bite her.

Yeah, Laara’s recklessly confident enough she’d thought she could out maneuver a big.

Reflex: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (2) + 20 = 22

Having attempted to roll out of the way of the spider as it charged, Laara trips in the approaching foliage and take several leg’s Spears into her gullet. As Chak’s blade ensures she is then showered in arachnid blood, the half-elf winces as she stands.

I. Hate. Forests. She tries to wipe herself off and she draws out her wand. Any if you able to use this? Nice blading by the way.

Holly attempts to spin clear of the enormous spiders leg but gets tripped up on the uneven ground. The spider steps on her with crushing pressure but thankfully doesn't cause any greater harm. "Ow."

As she gets up off of the ground she sees the spiders go down under the combined assault of her fellow Pathfinders. "A job well done everyone. Lets get healed up and out of here."

Fandral: I see no reason why you would not be able to get a new wand between sections. So go for it.

Exi: At the beginning of your move you were 30 ft up and 10 ft away from a 20 ft tall spider with 30 ft reach. The movement away would provoke. I'd prefer to just say you cast emergency force sphere and move on with life. For future encounters, please note your merged status at the end of each round and moving into each encounter.

The forest opens to a small clearing that is free of the dark flowers that seem to permeate the rest of the landscape. A ring of tall grey trees circles the clearing, their branches reaching toward each other to form a ceiling of black leaves. A chorus of whispering voices echoes within the clearing as countless faces form out of tree bark only to meld back in, flowing from tree to tree. Three of the faces remain in place and speak out in unison. “Who wanders these forlorn paths? Do you seek to join us? Join us!”

Three faces stare at you from within the trees. One looks rather angry, one looks to be laughing, and the last to be fairly calm.

Everyone, pick a single spirit and give me a sense motive check. Also there was ample time before here to take care of any healing needed, so go ahead and figure that out as well.

Laara makes sure to keep closer to the center of the path as the party tromps through the forest. Those snaking vines weren't exactly fun. As suddenly the trees start talking to them, she starts and looks suspiciously at these new faces. Well, we're Pathfinders, so wandering here's in the name I guess. And we're not looking to fuse with a tree - I'm not at least - just trying to find out what's making these woods so gloomy, and how the you know, stop that.

Totally fair (I'm marking EFS as used). I'll remember to note merged status. And if I forget it is my fault and means we were unmerged and Starlight is fair game. (I'll try not to forget though). Thanks.

The laughing tree chuckles at Laara's introduction. "Woods may be bright and cheerful or dark and gloomy... and you wish to trade one for another? 'Tis quite comical! Do you change the sun or the ground? You call yourself a Pathfinder eh? A path is a gap in the woods eh? So you seek what is not the forest yet you speak to it now? Are you lost? Hehehehehe! If Mother Bloodleaf spreads her blight, then less forest will survive and more path for you!" It seems quite proud of its joke and laughs for much longer than a sane person should... at least at their own jokes.

Laara seems more confused than enlightened by this.

Exi and Yami get... unnervingly close to the calm spirit, which does not seem to mind their presence.

"More interlopers... The undead, Mother Bloodleaf... and now Pathfinders. To panic, to hate, to love, these things are reactions. To study and remain at peace must be our way."

Chak and Fandral do what they can to figure out just why one of the spirits seems so hostile. "First undead, then the Mother, and now you! Each time the blight worsens... you will surely be our unmaking! Leave now! The status-quo... despite this blight... is surely better than what you lot provide... armed with hatchet and blade!"

Just need one more from Holly

Holly: You get the sense that the laughing tree would have a hard time turning an emotional appeal into wordplay... and such lines of discussion would likely just annoy it.

The spirits look about at the assembled group and begin peppering you with question, alternating who does the asking... sometimes even mid sentence. "So who are you? And where from? And why do you come? The Mother of Blight... Mother Bloodleaf watches all. By her leave we survive and by her survival shall we... inevitably... leave. But her wrath is great and should you fail stop the woods from... becoming gloomy as your friend says... and should she find we have given you guidance... our doom will be near!"

Each of you can make your case to one of the spirits, and make a skill check that you feel relates to the case you present. You each make your case independently, however Exi, you should have Starlight aid you for this.
