While breaking fast at The Royal, Pollex's priemere tavern, an elf glides into the room followed closely by a hafling holding a shining silver trumpet. Two shrill blasts silence any chatter left in the bar. The elf wears velvet breeches over long red stockings. His snowy shirt is clean and pressed under his black tabard. From the middle of his chest, a vicious looking rampant dragon glares at The Royal's patrons. The elf smiles. His long-dark hair frames his bony face as he speaks."Those present to participate on the Trial of Crowns are hereby summoned to Gorum's Green for the sorting."
...
When you arrive at what you think must be Gorum's Green, your senses peak. First, you are acosted by the smell of sweat and ale. The source is easily discovered upon surveying the gathered crowd: hundreds of women and men of every size and acountrement are queueing to enter a mighty pavillion set in front of a pair of massive iron gates. Beyond the gates can only be the trail arena.
...
This room is ripe with incense. When your eyes finally adjust to the haze, you see two hooded figures. Both wear midnight blue cloaks over shining plate armor. One rests a 5 foot sword across his knees while the other leans on an ebony staff a small distance away. Finally the one with sword asks in a gruff voice: "What seek you here?"
Bryce considers for a long moment before answering. He has traveled from Pyrandon to Pollex - and left behind a life, or at least an attempt at a life - to be here. No sense in rushing now. At length he replies in a low voice, "I seek duty. Or perhaps redemption. If there is a difference."
The tall lean man in dark leathers senses that more is wanted, that he has been too cryptic. He struggles to find words to explain himself. "I have always served my lord and done what was necessary for the protection of his lands and chattels. My duties have not always been pleasant or without guilt. Some few years ago my lord permitted me to ... retire. To start a new life, he said, and I have struggled to do that." Bryce looks down at his long fine fingers, flexes them, sighs. "It turns out these hands are not made for peace. Now my lord tells me that I am needed here, and that I may have a chance to serve him once more. Or serve the crown, which is the same. And so am I come."
Bryce is an illegitimate half-elven offspring of a noble family from the north west of the country. In those parts the surname 'Rosewood' is used for those with no father who will acknowledge them. Despite never being acknowledged, Bryce has faithfully served the noble family for many years. He has been a fixer, a solver of problems. The end of preserving social order has justified any means necessary, and Bryce has hunted bandits and hunted unnatural beasts. He has killed seditious peasants and blackmailed unruly merchants... whatever was required. So he's experienced, morally ambiguous, skilled as a tracker, bounty hunter and assassin.
A few years ago Bryce was given leave to end his service, under circumstances that he will not discuss. For the years since then, Bryce Rosewood has been scratching a living as a not-very-skilled jeweller, slowly eating into his savings. Trying to be a citizen, to create beauty, to contribute to society in a different way.
Again for reasons that he won't discuss, he is back on the payroll. He put away his jewellers tools, and brought his weapons out of storage. He understands, has been informed, that the crown needs him in the same way that his noble lord needed him before. To do what needs doing.
Hey DSP! I have a couple of other games on the go, and post pretty much every day. I enjoy roleplay and teamwork, and think that the key to both is having good OOC communication. I'm based in New Zealand, so post at odd times compared to the US. I'm keen to play, and I think Bryce would fit well in a somewhat morally ambiguous campaign with lots of intrigue. He'll also stand up pretty well in a fight, and can cover the scout / trapfinder / stealth monkey. Hope I didn't leave the application too late! Turns out 5th level characters are much easier to build with HeroLabs :)
I've taken mostly common items, plus an Efficient Quiver, plus some potions of 1st and 2nd level spells. Happy to adjust if needed.
If selected I'd be keen to work with you to embed Bryce's background more firmly into the area around Pyrandon.

Welcome GargoyleHero2 and Arknight! I'll keep an eye on your applications. Remember everyone, the recruitment closes in 35 hours. At that time I will only consider complete applications.
Those who are all set to be considered are:
Kayla Adrianas
Harold Wainright
Stonehart the Dwarf
Cecil Von Spirito
Restrop Stoneheart
Maedoc Celibrus
Seamus Fleetfoot
Osslend Abenier (Almost. Osslend, look at the other profiles listed here for additional info for yours.)

Thank you to all of you who have applied. I actually like all these concepts for one reason or another. This will be a tough choice.
Stay tuned!
Right. Profile started. All that remains is gear and hound stats, I think. Will finish those tonight.

Brynn Halistack |

Perusing the crowd on the way into the Trial, Brynn assures himself that the call to Gorum's Green wasn't just another test of his somewhat faithless following of Gorum. With a fairly keen eye on the masses, he knows his chances of acceptance are high. Look at these puny scrubs. Besides a couple half-breeds, I'm easily one of the strongest here.
When asked to enter the tent, his appreciation of this event somewhat heightens at the appearance of the dwarf's well-made scale armor. Brynn gives him a nod and a small grin before ducking between the flaps. Quickly blinking the incense out of his eyes, the mercenary looks at the two hooded men, but gives even more heed to their plate armor and the large sword wielded by the closest man. The small grin turns to a smile at the sight of the sword similar to his own, then he looks up at the wielder and gives him a nod as well.
"What seek you here?"
Money...fame...
Shifting his weight a bit as he comes up with a more well-thought-out answer, Brynn finally answers, "The Trial of the Crowns is exactly that: a trial. I'm at my physical peak and I'd love a challenge outside of this grunt work I've done for so many years."
He considers his next words as the men look at him for the rest of his answer. "...plus, a few extra coin never hurt anyone," he finishes, as he lets out a guffaw.

Restrop Stoneheart |

"Welcome Restop. You will be tested in due time."Both indicate that you are to take the curtain to the left where a yellow light wraps you up.
As the world comes back into focus. You see a huge wall encloses you completely. On this wall are thousands of pictographs depicting the history of the dwarves.
He bows curtly, just as he did when entering, then moves in the direction the figures indicate. Somewhat disoriented by the stark and quick change of environment, Restrop's interest in the wall soon dispels any misgivings he had about entering The Trial. He spends a great deal of time attempting to glean some connection from the history on the wall to his modest clan, though it is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Even the bits not directly related interest him, however - he takes a good deal of time absorbing the depictions.

Stuff
Phineas shifts the giant sword in his hands and speaks:
"Duty and redemtion? Surely what you mean is that you seek orders. How will you fare I wonder if you had no orders by which to carry out your charge. Sometimes even the blunt instrument must use his own brain."
The tone is mocking but not unkind: much like a teacher instructing a struggling student. With his sword, the man points to the left curtain and nods.
A violet light sucks you in and lands you in a burning wheat field. You stand in the center of a ring of flames, covered in blood, gripping your greatsword in one hand. You breathe steadily though tears stream from you eyes. Is this joy? Is it just the smoke?
Peace is made in such ways

Phineas looks to the man with the staff as if waiting for him to add anything. After a moment he speaks.
"Euripedes thinks you're a tool: a pawn of greater men. We will see I suppose"
Phineas nods to the left hand curtain, but Euripedes shouts.
"No! No, not that way."
The big man strides across the room at you, his staff standing poised where he had been standing. Euripedes places a strong arm around your shoulders and gently leads you to the right hand curtain.
"Try this one. You'll gain a usefull boon."
He parts to curatins for you and instantly you are struck by a solid gold flash.
As the world wheels back into focus, you find yourself in chains. To be more precise, you are chained between two pillars and before you are half a dozen students and what must be there teacher. The teacher speaks to his class.

The students begin to cast a myriad of spells at you. Each one seems to tear a fresh hole into your mind. Try as you might, you can't seem to pass out.

Those who are all set to be considered are:
Kayla Adrianas - Cleric (Sarenrae)
Harold Wainright - Ranger (Infiltrator)
Stonehart the Dwarf - Fighter
Cecil Von Spirito - Summoner
Restrop Stoneheart - Monk of the Sacred Mountain
Maedoc Celibrus - Wizard (Evoker)
Seamus Fleetfoot - Rogue/Fighter (I still haven't heard from you Seamus)
Osslend Abenier (Still Almost) - Cavalier (Hound Master) I need your saves, attacks, gear, special abilities, hound stats and abilities, etc.
Bryce Rosewood - Ranger (Skirmisher/Urban)
Brynn Halistack - Barbarian
Anyone still interested in joining has 12 hours to put together a polished application.

To anyone who is thinking about applying:
We could use a skill monkey/ roguish type. So far Seamus Fleetfoot is the only applicant in that area and we have not heard from him in a few days. One of the ranger applicants could perhaps fill that role with some small tweaks. An arcanist could probably cover most locked door situations.
No one need to charge their submission if they don't want to. I am not a firm beleiver in a "balanced" party. I more want to see that most of the bases can be covered, even if its unconventionaly and give some guidance to new applicants.

If we don't need it to be a combat beast I can always edit my Eidilon to fill roguish requirement. THat or just summon something.
Note: My Ediolon already has a very high perception which already sort of covers the trap finding issue. disabling them is usually pretty simple once we find it. At the very least i could use my summon monster ability to summon lots of little critters to set traps off. It's not an elegant solution, but it works. Also, I could just summon an unseen servant to drag a sack of flour down the hallway in front off us to trip traps. Also, not elegant, but it'll get the job done. ;-)
Brynn Halistack |

Brynn's teeth grinding against each other, they only open for an instant for him to yell, "STOP!" Though the students keep casting, Brynn's anger rises to a level he knows to be dangerous to any challenger of his. His muscles are tensing in a seemingly uncontrollable way, but he fights through the pain, stands tall, and opens his eyes to look his captors in their eyes. The face of Brynn's barbaric rage becomes apparent: it's a face of cold, emotionless steel -- a battle trance.
I wasn't meant to die this day.
Brynn pulls at the chains in order to possibly break the pillars to which they're attached.
Strength check 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20 (All other necessary modifiers are on my page if you'd like to use something other than a str check.)

Cecil - tests come in all sorts of disguises :)
GM DSP - Bryce has Trapfinding and Disable Device +13, along with good perception and stealth. Would consider any further suggestions to make him a useful combat-rogue-a-like. Could even dip into rogue if the mechanics stack up...
"Duty and redemtion? Surely what you mean is that you seek orders. How will you fare I wonder if you had no orders by which to carry out your charge. Bryce scrubs at his stinging eyes, looking quickly to the sides and behind him. Flames everywhere. Blood everywhere. No. Blood... on my hands. What manner of test is this? I was expecting some tourney, contests of strength and skill. Not this.
Eyes screwed tight to slits, Bryce steps forwards toward the hungry flames. Hands held out, blade parallel with the ground, he walks towards the burning wheat like it's his savior. Like fire can wash away blood. Like anything can wash away blood.
Somewhere close there should be a farmhouse...

I was hoping that character creation wasn't finalized quite yet. I'd love to trade out a feat -- Raging Vitality instead of Step Up.
Edit: and no, this has nothing to do with my current situation, just went through the APG with barbarian in mind for the first time, and just now saw the feat.
Creation is not closed. You can switch feats.

Creation is not closed. You can switch feats.
Good good. I at least would like to have another round of tweaks in the OOC thread to make sure we're a coherent and effective team.
Oh, and...

Yes, perfectly skewered Bryce there :)

Agreed on this. Also, I'd like to hold of on finalizing items until after the final team is accepted, if that's alright. That'll let me tailor the wands I get toward the group, rather than casting as broad a net as possible (which is what buying scrolls for spells is for, ja?)

There will be time in OOC to become a team, never fear. Oh and then there's the actual trail...We'll see who survives 8)
As to skewering Bryce: My responses to your answers of the query are directly proportionate to how clear a picture you painted of your character. 8)

In character-
Cecil rolls his head as he lays on the divan. His drifting thoughts and relaxed manner brought back to the present as he comes to realize that the room has an armoire. "What do we have here?" He absently says to Owen (the edilolon). Owen's ears perk up as they are no longer being scratched and he was spoken to. Following by his masters side both Owen and Cecil approach the armoire and Cecil pulls it open to inspect the contents.

Huddled at the back of the armoire are three small figures. They turn and you see 3 dirty, soot covered faces.
"Papa!"
The 3 children rush out of their make shift fortress and bombard you with hugs: each one leaving dust and stain on your exquisite robes. A moment later they lose interest and notice Owen.
"Puppy!" they cry in unison.
Within seconds, the eidolon is a matted mass of grey soot. The kids begin splashing each other with rose water, jumping up and down on the couch, and rolling around on the expensive carpet.
"Play with us papa!
They begin to play harder, laughing shrill, joyful, dirty laughs.
Hahahahahaha!

"Play with us papa!

Hahahahahaha!
The little dirt children take Cecil completely by surprise, owen too. "What in the...? Cecil begins to say as they jump from the armoire and rush him. When the children rush Owen he goes on the defensive, but realizing these are not enemies he does not attack. He does squirm a bit as they pet him (too hard were he a normal dog), but takes the situation in stride. When the children bursted from the furniture Poe (raven familiar) takes flight to keep from falling off Cecil's shoulder, eventually settling on a high perch when he realizes there is no danger.
Cecil looks at the children on Owen, then down to his soiled robes, then back to the children, then back to his robes. WIth a deep breath Cecil rubs his forehead with his thumb and index finger for a moment."Clothes can be mended and cleaned" he mentally reminds himself. Then another deep breath rubbing his forehead with his eyes closed."They're just children." He tells himself."I can do this" he tries to convince himself. On his third inhale he holds his breath momentarily as he straightens his arm to his side.
Assuming he is being tested or perhaps mocked, he forces a smile,
"Children, " Cecil calls "Would you like to see a trick?' His tone turning to one of feigned excitement becoming actual excitement."Help me move this furniture and I'll show you.' Cecil then directs the children and owen to push the high end of the fainting couch into a corner with just enough room that the children can climb the back of the high end. The other furniture will be pushed as far to the opposite wall as possible. Cecil will set up a so a short stretch of floor is opposite the low end of the couch. On the short stretch of floor Cecil will gather as many pillows, blankets, and other soft things as he can and place them at the foot of the couch. (something soft to land on)
"Now I need a volunteer to go first so I can show you how to do this" Grabbing whichever one volunteers Cecil sits the child on the high end of the fainting couch. Then he moves his hands in a very specific pattern and says "Graxa macaco".
The child sitting on the fainting couch suddenly loses all traction between his bottom and the couch causing him to slide down the couch and land in the pillows and blankets on the floor. He is momentarily frightened as he is not sure what happened but filled with glee when he hits the pillows and realizes he's ok. The other two look at each other a moment then to they both dash for the couch and proceed to climb up the back and slide into the pillows. Realizing the pillows are shifting as the children land in them Cecil casts Unseen servant with instructions to continually pile the pillows in the correct place.
Fainting couches are slanted to keep one's head above the feet. Cecil used this fact to turn it into a slide by casting grease on it. Presumably the children are using it repeatedly and laughing with glee.
Smiling at his cleverness Cecil surveys the situation a moment then looks down to Owen at his side. Owen has been staring at the children, but looks up as Cecil looks down. Cecil smiles, knowing instinctively what Owen's expression means. "You can go play" Cecil says with a smile. At this Owen visibly smiles (something a normal dog doesn't have the muscle structure to do) and dashes to the children.
"Now, lets see if we can clean them up a bit." Cecil rummages around for three hand sized objects (fruit will do, but something like a ball preferably). He then tosses one ball (or whatever) to each child and they proceed to rotate around each child whenever they are not holding them fast. (one casting of prestidigitation)
Whenever they are thus occupied Cecil will begin casting Prestidigitation again on each child in turn until they are all clean, he'll use Mending as needed on torn or tattered clothing. He will continue this cleaning/mending going to Owen, himself, anywhere the children have touched then the room in general until all the soot is in a pile, repeating as necessary. He will then prestidigitate the pile of soot into an armoire drawer and close the drawer with a flourish and a feeling of a job well done.
Owen then surveys his handiwork. The children are happy, clean, and laughing as they play with their "toys" and "dog." Everything is clean and mended. He smiles at his cleverness and thinks to himself, "If I had a good glass of wine this would be perfect."

Osslend's profile should be all set. Tell me if I missed anything. Anxious for my chance at the curtain :)

"What seek you here?"
A fairly short, broad man with a flat nose and short, dark hair cocks his head slightly at the question and pauses a few moments in thought before saying, "If I'm being honest, and I believe I should be, my answer is three-fold: One - to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Two - So that someone special might be proud of me. Three - Adventure...something I've long denied myself."
Upon the proclamation, he looks down and winks at the two war hounds at his feet, one large and brown with black patches and a very expressive face, the other smaller, black with brown patches and ears that stand up straight and curious.

Phineas speaks.
"Another peasant playing at nobility? Well, at least you have friends." He indicates your dogs. He waves his hand lazily toward the left hand curtain and speaks to Euripedes.
"I grow tired of these endless interviews..."
He looks back to you. "Are you still here?"
You pass the curtain and orange light slams you backwards and sends you spiraling away.
Your feet slam down onto a worn, stone hearth. You look around and you notice first that your joints ache and you have a long white beard. Virgil and Raleigh lie panting on the floor; their grey muzzles parted to show lolling tongues.
The tiny cottage you find yourself in is quaint and homey. Well used dishes and a sagging couch speak to the number of guests you've entertained. Life has passed in comfort being a favored servant to the baroness, but you never did find that adventure you yearned for.

Wincing at his aching joints, Osslend slowly bends to pet his companions and offer comfort.
Some sort of trick, is it? No man has this mastery of time.
Osslend sits on the worn couch, calling the hounds to him. After a few moments of looking around the room he nods to himself and says aloud, "This could be a fine life to have as an old man. One that maybe I wished my father had lived to give me a real home. But it's not my life now and not the one I'll allow myself to head toward any longer. It's not the life she'd have wanted for me."

As you all sit in your respective limbos, the materials around you begin to shift and distort. Most of you find youselves back in The Royal with a bulging purse of 75 golden sovereigns weighing you down.
Brynn, Bryce, Osslend, Maedoc, and Kayla blink a few times as the pavillion and the two cloaked men fade into being once more. You are dressed in clean, unbleached linen trousers and a tunic of deep blue emblazoned with a rampant gold dragon - the symbol of Pollexia. Euripedes speaks to you all.
"You five have been selected for the final test. Your only hope for success lies in your ability to work as a unit. You must become one iron fist: five fingers clenched in righteous might against the foes of Pollexia. If you survive the gauntlet, you become the first group in 1000 years to hold the rank of Imperial Dragoon. You will be the Dragon's flame and Pollexia's silent protectors. You will be the Crown's Reach!"
"Go now to the armoury, your things have be laid out there. You will have the rest of the day to learn one another's strengths and weaknesses. Tomorrow, you begin a new chapter in your lives."
Congrats to those that made the grade. Please join me in the OOC Thread. To the rest of you, you all were equally good and I wish I had time to run two games so you could all play. I really had a tough time.

Read the last few pages to get caught up from the council scene at least: if you can read all of it, that'd be great. You have all the information on the Faellstaff situation listed in that scene. Make any knowledge checks you want to make here in the OOC.
You will be introduced tomorrow, in game and out of game, as the characters eat breakfast in their apartments. You are being assigned to the team on the recommendation of the demi-mage of Pollex. You were told that you were recommended on the credentials of having potential, but requiring experience.
Breakfast will be a time for introductions and strategy.
I'm not going to lie to you Cecil, Maedoc was a good player. You're stepping into some big shoes, but I think you have the skill and drive to fill them. Good luck, and ask questions if needs be!

I am re-opening recruitment for few days in hopes of replacing a player.
The player I need to replace is a Ranger (Skirmisher, Urban Ranger) built as a switch hitter with strong perception and tracking abilities. He also helped cover the "rogue role".
I am open to any class (Samurai are not a good fit in this campaign however), but will accept only core races. Build rules are at the beginning of this thread. Please build according to those rules including items and skills. Then, level the character to 6.
Please read through our discussion page as well as the game thread to get a feel for the campaign and players to make sure this is a play style you like.
Good luck!

I've read through this game in my work boredom and I love the story so far... I'd love to join in, but have zero PBP experience. (full disclaimer)
Anyway, I'll roll up some sets and get down to making a character. i'll most likely be going with a Bard.
