History:
Born and raised in (city name), Osslend Abenier was the poor son of a poor man who was foolish with his money. Osslend's mother had left before he could even remember her and his father did his best, though that was hardly saying much. By the age of 15, Osslend was caring for himself as his father had all but disappeared, showing up only on occasion and always in trouble with some lender or another when he did. It was at the age of 15 that Osslend met the creature that would send his life in a whole new direction. Lost, shivering and hungry, Osslend found a full-breed war hound wandering the streets in the pre-dawn hours one winter morning. He cared for the dog, sharing his own food and blanket, until a few weeks later, the dog's owner finally found him. To Osslend's surprise, the Baroness who owned the dog was kind and seemed genuinely concerned for the well-being of her hound. She offered to reward Osslend who declined the offer asking only that he be allowed to visit with the hound on occasion as he would miss its company. The Baroness agreed and before long, Osslend was named her Master of Hounds, caring for all eight of her powerful animals. He soon moved onto the grounds and found a home for himself. The Baroness was a kind woman and surprisingly young to hold such a position of power and esteem. She disappeared for days at a time and often returned home injured but unwilling to share details of her exploits. The years went by and the Baroness aged, marrying and outliving two husbands during Osslend's 20's. The young man was more than content spending time with the hounds whom he had grown to love. Of course, he socialized as well and became a popular figure at the local taverns, never over-indulging, but never under-indulging either. He became known as a friend to the poor, giving over much of his wages to help others and always ready to defend anyone in need. He was known for carrying a large flail that he jokingly claimed he needed to train the hounds. On his 26th birthday, the Baroness returned from one of her mysterious trips gravely ill but bearing a gift. A young War hound pup, the finest Osslend had ever seen. The Baroness's steward, a man named Hargrave, was beside himself with grief at his mistress's illness. In a moment of alcohol-induced weakness, he confessed two things to Osslend: 1) Hargrave was and had been madly in love with the Baroness (this Osslend had long since figured out) and 2) the Baroness was actually a covert agent for the government. Her work saved lives and kept peace. The Baroness did not last long enough for the clerics to arrive and they soon learned that she had been poisoned. By whom or what, they could not say. Three years to the day after her death, Osslend was approached by two men claiming to have known and worked with the Baroness. They said that she had spoken often of Osslend to them and that she was impressed by his worth ethic and clever mind. They hinted that Osslend might find work...the kind of work the Baroness had done if he were willing. If so, he show up at (x-time, place specified).
Personality:
Osslend, now nearly 30 years old, is anxious to do some good in the world. Though he never could have confessed this to Hargrave, the truth was that he was in love with the Baroness as well. Anything he could do now that might make her proud is what he would do. Osslend is a jovial man, though quiet unless he finds cause not to be. Thanks to the kindness shown him by the Baroness, he is kind to anyone deserving of that kindness and no friend to those who aren't. He learned to fight the hard way...he got beat up a lot when he was a kid on the streets. Luckily, he learned his lessons well. Though fairly warm to people he likes, Osslend's kindness and joy know no bounds when in the company of dogs. Most who meet him say he is a kindred spirit to the canines: loyal, true and a good judge of character. Any slight to his hounds is a slight to Osslend himself and slights are not tolerated.
