"Thinking back to Ragna, maybe it wouldn't hurt to check out the town first to make sure we understand what's going on. She really didn't seem threatening at all until she was scared we were going to harm others of her kind. If I'm going to go around killing people, I'd rather like to know that I'm killing the right ones for the right reasons. Depending on what we find out in the town, we may need to check the bodies at the gravesite later on to confirm what we will be told, so I suppose there isn't much point in disturbing them more than once. I'm not going to just assume everyone that we question will be telling us the truth."

Surprised Shinami didn't insist Kayla turn around.

It sounds like the concensus is to go to town first.

You break camp and are on the road by 11:00 which should put you in Faellstaff just before noon.

20 minutes into your journey you see, nearly 20 yards ahead, a man with a woodsman's axe clamber up the little bank and out of the road. He waits there, obviously trying to give your horses unobstructed use of the road.

Squinting in the sunlight, Shinami spots a man with an axe climb to the top of a bank and stand there.

"Hail stranger! How goes the day?" Shinami calls out in warm greeting.

In a non-threatening manner, Brynn saunters up to the head of the group to be the shield between any strangers and his party. He allows Master Genbu to continue talking.

The stranger, an aging man of maybe 45 years, covers his eyes and looks up at the sky.

"It's gonna be a scorcher it is." He looks back at all of you. "Bless me! Is there a war nearby?"

He looks frightened by all your weapons.

Holding his hands in plain view, away from his weapons, Osslend smiles at the man.

"I hope not, friend. We did hear there might be some trouble about these parts, though. Weird things, you know? Have you heard of any trouble lately?"

"I'm just passin' through here m'self. Ain't heard of ar had any trouble 'round 'ere. Say! Could I travel with y'all? I can see I'd be plenty safe. I'm headin' ta th' capital then north to the ironwood forests. Where you lot from anyhow?"

"You seem to have been 'passing through' for awhile. We're here to protect you, not harm you. Why don't you tell us the the complete truth of what's going on here? It's in your best interest."

"That's precisely why we're here. I know it may be difficult for you, but tell us what you know about the wolves. Any piece of information could be helpful, so don't leave anything out even if it seems arbitrary. Do this and we will avenge your mother. The man pats the haft of his axe. You notice now that the head is pure cast silver. At the mention of Ragna:

"I did hear about a woman what went by that name...yes, she was a wolf I think? Strangest wolf I ever heard of, she had this respect for life unheard of in her kin."

Kayla:

He seems confused and slightly angry about Ragna, but he's telling the truth.

Brynn straightens his back at the man's answer. Crossing his arms, he begins to take all of the pieces of this expedition into memory.

What knowledge or check would it be to see if this man could be a wolf? Regardless, a simple perception to see if he has any scratches or blood stains. 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12

Turning back to her companions, "Shall we continue on to the town now? I doubt he's be able to carry that hammer, let alone pat it if her were a wolf.

Knowledge would give you more information about werewolves in general. Perception would help you decide if a specific person is a werewolf based on what you know of each. That said, kn: religion is most useful, kn: nature could help a bit too.

Based on what you know of werewolves so far: the have wierd fingeres, change at night, and are allergic to silver, you don't feel like this man is a werewolf.

Everyone else is welcome to make checks if they like.

Nodding to the man,"Thank you for your help. There is a town a few clicks that way." Pointing the way we came."Best as I can tell they seem wolf free. I would offer to let you travel with us, but we're heading into wolf territory, not out."

"Many thanks gov'na! I'll head there straight away. You lot do be careful though. Stay behind locked doors at night ya hear?"

He strolls of down the road singing an old soldier's song.

"Over th' hills and far away! Th' Queen has called so we obey! We'll stand our ground, then here we'll stay. Over th' hills and far away!"


"One second, Kayla. I have some more questions for our new friend." Bryce puts his hand on the peasant's shoulder, and continues in a firm tone that expects no dissent. He pauses between each question, allowing the man to reply.

"How many different wolves have you seen with your own eyes? Have you killed any, or seen any killed by others?"

"How many of them have you seen change from man to wolf? Have any changed back?"

"How many armed or skilled people live in Faellstaff? Are any of them sympathetic to the wolves?"

Sense motive through-out, looking for dissembling or areas that the man steers clear of: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21.

EDIT - did Bryce get a chance to ask these quetions before Cecil dismissed the man?

Taking one of the silver throwing axes from Cecil, Shinami calls the man over.

"Good sir, come here for a moment please! Seeing that woodsaxe on your back there I'm hoping you might be able to help me with an issue. Can you fix the wrapping around the handle of this axe?"

Shinami hands the axe over to the aged man, making sure to hold on to the handle so the man would have to touch the gleaming silver to grab on to it.

The man ends his song abruptly as Bryce, who had been at the end of the dragoons' ranks, places his hand on his shoulder.

The man smiles at Bryce.

"You are a thoughtful man. Grim, and a bit frightened, but that's ok. Who wouldn't be eh?"

The man takes a deep breath and thinks a moment.

"I've seen maybe 6 different wolves, but I ain't killed any. I keeps to m'self and stays behind a locked door don't I? I have seen 1 killed though: by its own kind it was."

"I've only seen 'em as wolves, but I have seen 'em change back and THAT, is a sound like you nev'r 'eard in yer life!"

"I don't know much about Faellstaff. I'm not from there."

The man grabs the axe head and flips it around and re-wraps the handle like a pro. Make a perception check Shinami

He doesn't stay behind closed doors and you're pretty sure he has killed at leat one wolf. He has seen 1 killed by another werewolf. He has seen them change to and from all stages of wolfdom, he told the truth about the sound though. He is not from Faellstaff, but he probably knows more than he's letting on.

When he grabbed the axe head, he accidently cut his hand on the blade. However, he doesn't show more pain than any other man would.


Bryce nods slowly, "That'll do, I think. That'll do. Fare well on your travels."

No one tells everything, and why should they? And yes, only a fool knows no fear.

He looks to Kayla and winks before he continues his song and walks off toward Koppolex.

What's next oh fearless heroes?


Bryce looks at his companions. "Into town then? Eyes open, weapons ready." The hunter suits deed to word, checking his blades, making sure his bow is ready to string, and his silver-tipped arrows are close to hand in their quiver.

His gaze flicks from shadow to shadow as they move on. Do you want pre-emptive perception rolls?

"Well... He wasn't a werewolf. Didn't react at all to the silver. Do ya mind if I keep one of the axes Cecil? In case we run into more werewolves? Wouldn't mind having a weapon that can affect them from range."

Kayla speaks low enough for only the group to hear. "I bet they wouldn't have bothered with a warning shot had we ridden up in the middle of the night."

Louder, for the guard to hear. "My name is Kayla Adrianas, cleric of Sarenrae. We've heard of the trouble going on here and wish to offer our assistance."
