No responses in nearly 48 hours. Going to assume that the others continue to wait.
Xarkyn sees the shadowy globe lumber towards her as it bounces around, but as she peeks around the corner, another bolt flies out from the darkness at her.
Bolt @ Xarkyn-13 FFAC + Imp. Cover Bonus: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
The bolt slams into the wall behind her as it gets close, but misses by a good few inches.

Xarkyn looks to see if the darkness continues to follow her down the hallway and if so she moves further down the hallway away from the wounded companions...

Lissa listens and waits for anything that means she can get into the curtain protected room, and try to drag one of the others out of there. In this situation, this honestly feels like one of the most frustrating things that she's ever done.
Sorry, but ATM, I don't have much to contribute.
| GM Bold Strider |
The darkness begins to engulf the corner of the hallway, causing Xarkyn to be only 15' from the edge, when another bolt erupts from the darkness at her.
Bolt @ Xarkyn-13 FFAC: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
This bolt clips her side, cutting a long gash across her abdomen.
G'Boar thinks he hears something pass by the hallway, but the arrow he looses just slams into the wall.

Taking the nick, Xarkyn runs down the hallway towards the doors that lead to the forge...

Seeing that G'Boar shoots into the darkness Clara does the same. "Did you hear somebody?"
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Miss Chance, lower misses: 1d100 ⇒ 71
Shortbow Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2

Lissa holds the curing wand she has up to Clara. "You can use this, right? I can't and we'll need to heal the others, so we can get them out of there. When I bolt, follow me, because we need to hurry.
Then, she slinks forward, hoping that this will work. Give Xarkyn a little more time, then we charge for it.
| GM Bold Strider |
Just to clarify, you want the derro to follow Xarkyn which it was doing, but then as it passes, you alert it to your presence by having two people fire arrows into the darkness, basically telling it that you are trying something sneaky, such as an ambush or a rescue. Is this pretty much what has been done so far?

*sigh* For all practical purposes, yes, that's exactly what happened.

Well the planning part seemed OK. The actual execution part doesn't seem to be going so well...

I had a readied action IF G'Boar could perceive something... Didn't say he took the shot.

so are we retconning the shots into darkness?
Clara Oswin Oswald
|
It seems this was my misunderstanding. I thought if G'Boar shoots Clara may as well. If he hadn't released the arrow Clara wouldn't have either, because she did not see nor hear anything in the darkness.
| GM Bold Strider |
We've been at this encounter since December 7th, so I'm not going to retcon posted actions as it will only drag this out farther.
@G'Boar: A readied action is taking the shot if X happens. You perceived the derro and that was the condition for taking the shot, thus you took the shot.
Xarkyn ducks into the forge room, however she feels her righteous judgment falter. She peeks back out into the hallway, but the oppressive ball of darkness is gone.
Clara can answer where it goes as it seems to reappear back in the southern hallway and stops moving.
Combat is over unless someone will act to keep it happening.

that was her only way to stay alive and keep the darro occupied, ah well
Lissa Villasani

Lissa quickly retreats back into forge, irritation written all across her face. With a glare at the other two with her, she blurts out, "What part of 'wait for the midget to be out of the way, to save the others' needs you to shoot aimlessly at the first sign of motion?!?!"
She glares, waiting for the inevitable indignant response.

Returning to the small group Xarkyn asks them "Do we have anymore options?"
G'Boar S. Hulighan
|
Amazing that this is a level one scenario... I am at a loss. I never thought that a 12 perception score would register enough to take a shot. Sorry to all for my noob incompetence... i just don't know what to do besides charge headlong into the darkness and try and drag folks back to the furnace. But I doubt that G'Boar would survive after all of this bickering.
Lissa Villasani
|
"I'm out of ideas,"Lissa grumbles, trying to not snarl more at other people. "If anyone has a good idea, I'll give it a shot. But I don't think we have any options left."
Xarkyn Wildmoon

suicide mission G'Boar. early dice killed us. double darkness killed us. ah well. you live and learn. I think we can call it Bold
| GM Bold Strider |
@G'Boar: The 12 Perception made the check because the derro wasn't stealthing through the darkness as it had to move at full speed to get a shot off. All that was accounted for was distance penalties at a DC 0.
This scenario is quite annoying from a GM perspective as having such a strong effect at such a low level is quite unbalancing, but I cannot deviate from tactics, sadly.
The remaining four players need to decide on if we are calling it a wrap.

As much as I hate leaving the others behind, I'm out of feasible plans. Might as well call it. I'm sorry, you three.

I was going to suggest maybe waiting for that thing to sleep, but it's your call folks. Bound to happen, given the number of characters I've made.
Dariusz Reyman

While I appreciate the idea, that would be suicide. You have no way of knowing where our bodies are, and no viable way to defend against the Derro.

GM Bold Strider, I don't blame you at all. On the contrary, I admire how you have run the adventure. A lesser GM would have bent the rules or let things slide... I just HATE leaving folks behind (and I hate how long this has taken to end up like this).

just out of curiosity, how many ended up perishing?
Edited: nvm got the answer in discussion
