All right, here comes the background.

Ke'zsothar, the demon lord of badgers:

The existence of Ke'zsothar, the third least powerful demon lord in existence (The second being Dh-bot, the demon lord of squirrels) is unknown for the majority of even the most well-read planar experts. He was once content to rule his diminutive realm in the Abyss, eating fiendish insects and small mammals and chasing off the occasional dretch or quasit who dared intrude his realm.

Those days of (relative) peace however ended when some upstart conjurer dared to summon him to Golarion. His first instinct was to show the fool why summoning demon lords is a bad idea, but the guy was kind of big and scary, and Ke'zsothar ended up just pretending to be an entirely ordinary badger. The conjurer, thinking that he had made some mistake, threw the diminutive demon lord out of his house.

Ke'zsothar was now stranded in a foreign land, with no idea where he was and his clergy (four farmers in Tian Xia) nowhere to be found. This didn't brother him very much, though, as he had lately been getting a little bored anyway. Curious to see what this strange realm contained, he began his journey through Ustalav.

His travels went reasonably well, only interrupted by an overconfident hunter now and then, but they were no match for him. Eventually, he ended up in a small town, where professor Lorrimorr was coincidentially visiting, and decided that it was time to stop being lazy and start building a cult. Unfortunately, however, the people there refused to believe that he was a demon lord, instead dismissing him as just another telepathic badger. This greatly offended him, and he was just about to put some respect into those unrespectful fools, when suddenly...

Zombies attacked!

The zombies didn't even notice him at the beginning, but after one of them stepped on his tail, he flew into a blood rage and promptly sliced and diced half of the horde with his vicious claws. Professor Lorrimor, naturally, was quite curious about how such a small beast could bring down half a dozen undead, and was more than mildly surprised when the badger began communicating telepathically with him.

Though he did not agree to worship him, Professor Lorrimor didn't outright deny his claim of being a demon lord, and listened for his recounting of the past few weeks, offering in return a few tips against fighting undead. They traveled together for a while, then went their own ways, but Ke'zsothar, who had taken a liking on the professor, promised that if he would need help with anything, he would just need to ask.

A few weeks ago, when cheking out his mailbox, he found a letter inviting him to the professors funeral. Without paying attention to the fact that the box had not been there yesterday, he set off towards Ravengro.

I hope that you like it. :)

I'm interested, but I"m really struggling with a good concept... Keep me in mind, if you would, but I make no promises on whether I'll actually get a good character together in time.

Proposed Monster PC:

Harpy Temple Dancer of Desna, with the Chance Savior trait and Cadence domain (see Temple Dancer).

Rezika was a foundling, her parent butchered by adventurers in the wilds of the Ustalav Palatinates and sold to the Sczarni as a pet/servant/exhibit. Professor Lorrimor, disgusted by the harpy-child's abject state secured her release and raised her as his own.
Rezika proved a compliant child, though sometime given to rash outbursts. The Professor, sensing that she needed more discipline and direction than he could provide gave her into the care of the Temple of Desna in Caliphas, who in turn sent her to be trained as a Temple Dancer in Karcau. Rezika flourished in the atmosphere of devotion and dance, her heritage of song well-suited to the goddess of liberation, luck and travel. Rezika's feral intuition astounded her superiors and the Professor wrote or visited her often both to keep in touch but also when he needed particular information or insight.
On one occasion Rezika was able to repay her patron's good service by saving his life when intruders hired by one of the Professor's detractors sought to slay him.

Now Rezika is called home on sad business, to bury her adoptive father. She is now civilized, respected and competent. Though she saved him once, the failure of his death she feels is hers. Beware the foes of Rezika!

If The Professor's Ghost gets turned down for some reason, I think I'll submit an Umbral Blot Synthesist.

Because who doesn't want to play a sentient black hole who made a pact with an outsider for the chance to have hands and feet?

Or maybe an Atropal Scion Synthisist who made the pact so it can be comfortable inside it's Eidolon's womb.

Why are you all looking at me like that?

Actually, DH, I was considering a very similar idea to your Umbral Blot: a strange, freakish, monstrous friendly who just wanted people to stop hating on him for his looks, so he uses his eidolon to interact with the masses. Too bad eidolons tend to look funky, too....

Now I'm going with a two-headed orc. Not as flashy as some of the other entries, but should be interesting, to build if nothing else.

I wouldn't worry about the Professor's ghost getting turned down. He makes the perfect "glue" so to speak; he gives all these monsters the perfect reason to get together and stay together.

In other news, the deadline for expressing interest closes in a few hours!

I guess I'll have to wait for another opportunity to play a stillborn god-fetus that built it's own surrogate mother out of the physical manifestations of it's abandonment issues.

Oh well, Professor's Ghost it is. :)

I think I'm in a weid mood today

oooh I really hope I make the cut... it would be an honor to play with DH

Haha, seems to be a running theme among monsters that they have no parents. Kind of surprising how they keep managing to make more of themselves. Seem to die faster than more pop up.

haha.... my character has parents! I guess I'm in the minority.

@DH - The professor's ghost is brilliant. There's a lot of good ideas in this thread, but that one is simply awesome!

I think I am switching back to my original idea, although if CC really likes my devil, she is available.

Current thought is an Animal Lord Giant Porcupine. There is just something about a grappling monk/fighter/ranger that is covered in sharp spikes that rings appropriate for this campaign.

I put together a backstory for my guy (borrowing strongly from the Enemy Mine book) and it has a Parent.

Zamiss Backstory:

The great War has raged since the first of the People created a civilisation and banded together to kill the great Enemy.
Close they came, hundreds of the Enemy were killed, and the remainder were driven into the desolate places. That first Civilisation achieved heights we now can only dream of, and peace was upon the high places and the low places.
But for all their wisdom and power the first People had not learned the most important lesson - the First Lesson - and allowed the Enemy to grow in the desolate places while they turned on each other. But the Enemy had learned the First Lesson from the People, and put aside their petty rivalries and infighting, uniting and building their strength, waiting for a chance to strike.
When the People faced their greatest challenge the Enemy returned, and the People were caught unaware. Civilisation toppled in the face of the War.
Since that time the War has raged. The People outnumber the Enemy, but every Enemy has a raw power only the greatest of the People could match.
The People try to reclaim the great weapons built during the peace, but the Enemy is ever ready to deny them to the People.
One such attempt was led by Jeriba of Gothig of Shigan, ranked Great Teacher. Jeriba led her descendents for seven centuries on a quest to recapture, restore and revitalise one of the great cities of the first People. Labouring in secret they hid from one of the oldest and greatest of the Enemy, who slumbered nearby. Upon the first empowerings of the city’s devices the Enemy awoke and destroyed Jeriba’s line. Jeriba survived by taking refuge inside one of the great buildings. The Enemy destroyed the entrances, burying the building and condemning Jeriba to slow death.
Then something unprecedented happened. One of the slave-people came to the city. The empowering of the city had opened a strange portal to the place where the slave-people lived, named Ustalav. This slave-people was Petros of the line of Lorrimor, ranked Great Teacher by the slave-people.
Petros was able to enter the building where Jeriba was trapped due to his tiny size. Jeriba attempted to compel him, but he was of the free slave-people, and a Great Teacher among his own kind, and was able to protect his mind. Also trapped by the Enemy, the two agreed to ally. Many many days were spent planning and studying. Jeriba distracted the Enemy so Petros could explore the city. Petros returned with information and they both learned.
Eventually Petros awakened the engines of the city, and spent it spiralling up with the Enemy trapped inside. The city rose till the Enemy could not breathe, and died choking and screaming.
Jeriba did this knowing it would mean death - but a heroes death, defeating one of the ancients of the Enemy. Before dying Jeriba told Petros of a way to use her transport to return to the place of the People.
Perhaps in repayment of the debt incurred to him, or because of the great deed he had helped accomplish, or to prevent betraying their oathed alliance, Jeriba did one last thing. Bringing forth a stored child, Zamiss, Jeriba named Petros Regent and Custodian of the Shigan Line and charged him to bring the child before the People.
For one of the slave-people to come before the people was for to become property or food. But Petros did so. When he came before them and brought the child the People were amazed.
Much legal research followed and amazment grew to outrage.
Finally it was stated thus by the Custodians of the Lines of the People. Jeriba - though possibly insane - had acted within the Law of the First Lesson. As Custodian of the Shigan line Jeriba could appoint whosoever Jeriba wished as Heir. None could gainsay this without Breaking the Law. The actions of Jeriba had killed an Eldest of the Enemy, and thus Jeriba - and her line - was accorded all the honours of one of the great Heroes of the People. To attack such a line until the losses caused in the pursuit of such heroism was also Breaking the Law. The People and property of the line of Shigan were therefore inviolate save by the permission of the Custodian of the Shigan Line - whether or not the Custodian was of the People. Further the Custodian was entitled to share in the rule of the People.
However, nothing in the law required the Custodian to be made aware of this. Petros of Lorrimor of Shigan had been kept in seclusion during the deliberation.
One of the weakest of the Custodians came before Petros and thanked him for his help and provided patyment in the manner of the slave-people. He requested the Professor remain silent about the city, asked him to acknowledge Zamiss as the new Heir and allow Zamiss to be raised among the People and provided the Professor with transport to the place of the slave-people. Petros left without knowing exactly what had happened.
He later wrote a treatise on the People that was wildly inaccurate about the People’s social constructs.
Four decades passed and the Custodian of the Shigan Line was killed. Murder was suspected.
Zamiss, the then still formative Heir became Custodian of the Shigan Line and was honour-bound to see that the previous Custodian was avenged. The Custodians of the Lines could not gainsay this by the Law, and assisted Zamiss in acquiring equipment, slaves and cover to travel among the slave-people in their strange, desolate, hostile and deadly land of Ustalav.

Recruitment is CLOSED!

The only posts that should pop up after this are backstory and/or crunch for those who have already posted here.

Dark Archive

Do you want crunch up before you make your decision, or are you basing the party off concepts? I left most of my crunch on my work computer.

Backstory/concept is preferred to crunch. Of course, having both won't hurt either.

so, what's the deadline on getting completed char info in and when can we expect a decision time?

I'll be able to make a descision fairly soon, I just need to consolidate all the applications and figure out who's submitted what. Any one who still has fluff to submit should do so tomorrow if possible.

Started building The Professor. Realized that as a wizard, most of his spells couldn't be cast (can't really carry or manipulate components) and it would be hard to carry and study spellbooks. Combine that with the memory problems I've decided to work into his personality, and I think Wizard is a bad fit.

I think I'm going to begin the game with Petros realizing that he's going to have to re-learn magic another way, taking the route of the Sorcerer.

Thanks for the heads up CC.

BTW, is the Harpy Temple Dancer ok classwise?
How many RP would the Harpy's scream be, and/or how would you amend it so it isn't OP for 1st level?

I know you said this can all be done later to "balance" monstrous PCs togrther and it will be more RP than the default Carrion Crown, but still...

@Prof: incorporality is tough, huh?! Bloodlining is much more you. ;p

BTW: you could check out SGG's Riven Mage...

As far as the incorporeal issue goes, ghosts can have real equipment, but it is only real for them. No reason the spell component pouch could not be stored elsewhere, and he would be carrying a ghostly version of it that would work just like a regular pouch. The real problem would come when we get more powerful spells that require real components, not ones that have negligible costs.

I am going to stick with Ealieth my Lilin-Devil - Oracle of Life - CG.

I really like the Animal Lord Porcupine, but just cannot get the feel for his background. Was working on being born in the Realms of the Mammoth Lords and trained by a monk from Tian as well as another Animal Lord Ranger. The Professor met him while he was working as a guard in Icestair and introduced him to these two trainers after determining that he was born as an Animal Lord due to being born fairly close to the twisted abyssal magic of the Worldwound.

If you are looking for a martial character, let me know and I can work on him some more. I have just run out of creativity at this point.

Don't worry about the balance, there will be a "balancing session" after I've decided the players.

I would, however, like you to amend the part where Lorrimos takes care of the harpy as his adopted daughter. I don't want to give out to many spoilers, but it will conflict with a certain npc's backstory.

On another note, I'd like to see a little more crunch from the mechanical Nymph slave (class) and the demon lord of badgers (class and a loose outline of racial abilities, stats, etc.

No worries, I'll make change it to the Prof being a patron of the harpy while she resided/was raised/trained at various temples.

Count Chocula wrote:

Btw, I know there are a lot of great concepts out there and all, and I know Maelchar isn't very balanced, but I'd be thrilled to play him, even toned down to balance with the others... Just saying, I have no qualms about balancing him to fit with the rest.

Here's hoping... and wishing all of you the best in the selection process...

Upon further consideration, I need to withdraw my applications. I am in too many campaigns already and while the idea of playing a monstrous character is very appealing, I have too much in RL and do not think that I should take on yet another campaign at this time.

Thank you for the consideration and good luck to the rest of you.

Working on it! I have been pretty much thinking about taking a badger, (animal companion version) and sticking a fiendish template onto it. The class will probably need to be edited a little to capture the flavour, but it'll likely be a melee one.

I'll get back to it later today!

I believe I've posted a solid chunk of backstory, and some brainstorming on crunch. Should I bring it back to attention, or is everything accounted for for my application?

Axolmotl wrote:

I have a pretty good idea of your character, you're good.

Ok, I think the Professor is ready to go.

I haven't included a background because he's an established personality with at least partial memory loss, so I'm in a rare sitation where my character is extremely well known to everyone in the group, and not very well known to himself.

His rather high charisma is the result of a base stat of 16, +2 human, +2 age, +4 ghost.

Petros has exactly two combat abilities. The first is a 1d6 damage touch attack, the other is the Snowball spell (reflavored to a blast of freezing ectoplasm). Don't expect him to add much in a fight.

I'm close enough to ready for you to get an idea of my character, I think. I added notes at the bottom including another option for character class, since I noticed the number of ranger applicants.

All right, here is a litte more crunch for Ke'zsothar:

Template:

Fiendish template, with the following additions:

Telepathy 100ft; This is kind of necessary, since badgers can't speak.

Grant Spells (Domains: Chaos, Evil, Animal, Strenght. Subdomains: Demon, Fur, Ferocity.); He is a demon lord after all. :D Just in case he manages to convert someone. (Which would actually be quite an interesting RP opportunity.)

Class:

I had some difficulty choosing between ranger and barbarian, but in the end I decided on Ranger, though with some modifications. The changes I'm suggesting are these:

Remove:
Favored Terrain
Spells
Animal Companion

Add:
Spell-like abilities.
Ability to use the domain powers from own domains.
Stuff that improves the badgers blood rage.

I'll elaborate on these later, I'm pretty much posting as I come up with stuff, so that you can say "Hell no!" if you see something terrible.

Racial abilities:

Using the normal badger, but with animal companion badger's ability scores.

Size: Small;

Senses: low-light vision, scent.

+1 Natural Armor;

Speed 30 ft, Burrow 10 ft;

Natural attacks: Bite 1d3, 2 claws 1d2;

Blood rage; (Link)

+4 on Escape Artist.

Ability Score modifiers: Dex +6, Con +4, Int -8, Wis +2;

Done finally! Sorry this took so long ><

Sivrn's Story::
She guarded the books. That was her job. Sivrn was, as many Sphinxes are, interested in her own pursuits and knowledge, her own puzzles and riddles to solve. They are, after not too long, the only thing interesting in a Sphinx's world.

Sivrn's library was hidden long ago under the rule of the Whispering Tyrant, sealed up so that the lich and his minions could not find the secrets within. Its mage guardians were only humans and they were lost, leaving the (then young) Sphinx to her own designs in the library. So it was that Sivrn had no real parents, outside of what she came to view as her books.

She hunted outside for her food, and weathered the blight that was the Tyrant's reign in relative obscurity, and relative unawareness of the outside world. Instead, knowing only that she was meant to protect the books, she focused on her own interests and pursuits instead. She read many books, and studied a wide variety of subjects, never settling on one to study deeply.

Sivrn met no humans that challenged her. There was one curious wizard that failed her challenge of riddles ... she threatened to eat him, but in the end only swiped an arm off when he tried to cast a spell at her. But for the most part, she was not disturbed, and her duties were dull. The library was forgotten, the books forgotten, Sivrn and her vigil forgotten.

That is, until Professor Lorrimor found her. Not only did the Professor solve her riddles for access to the ancient books, but he gave her a new puzzle to solve that occupied at least part of her (by now) utterly bored brain. That puzzle she still has - a stick that grew oddly in many twists and odd shapes, sanded and smoothed down. The object is to find both ends of it, but try as she did, She could never find either one. Not quite word play, but enough to keep her interested. As she could not solve the problem of the endless stick, Sivrn was bound by her promise to let him into the forgotten library.

The Professor stayed, too, in part to read the books, and in part out of curiosity about Sivrn - because she had been left on her own, she was an odd mix of desperate for interaction and completely self sufficient. Intelligent, of course ... and knowledgeable ... but he also found her temperment widely varying, and difficult to predict.

Still, Sivrn liked the old scholar, maybe because he was the only person she'd talked to for any length of time, and she was sorry to see him go. She did not let him take her books, though, partly because of her duty to protect them, and partially in the hopes that it would force him to return with more puzzles and conversations for her.
He never did, though someone came in his place - a terrified messenger that had been convinced, somehow, to brave the odds and wilderness of Ustalav to come to the old library, and deliver her a message that made her very angry.

The professor is dead.

Sivrn never asked Lorrimor what he was studying in her books. She is at her core a terribly selfish creature, and was not particularly interested in his motivations or pursuits. Now she thinks that maybe she should have asked. Maybe she should have known what he was looking for. Maybe it was dangerous. Maybe its why he died ... maybe she could have helped.

Sivrn has never left the library.

Now, motivated by what she can only describe as mild annoyance her only contact with the outside world - and maybe her only friend - is gone, she comes to his funeral to see what trouble the information from her library has caused. She is a fickle creature, and like many of her emotions, this one is little more than a whim ... but its still more interesting than watching the books any longer.

Sivrn's Personality:
Sivrn is catlike. In essense, she is fickle, tempermental, and easily bored. Intelligent and interested in the pursuit of knowledge, she is also utterly amoral by general standards and uninterested (for the most part) in getting people to like her. The only thing she is consistent about is any promise she makes regarding riddles or games. She is also clueless about the world other than what she has read, and has yet to experience many things first hand. New experiences are what she craves most, but she won't be shy about the ones she doesn't like.

The nymph slave is going to go Ranger (Infiltrator). I've actually got him/her all rolled up and statted if you'd like me to make an alias.

Thanks, I'd also enjoy some more background from both the Yuan-ti monk and Raggimung the half ogre.

Actually, I think that I'll go with barbarian after all, and instead of trying to create some kind of demonic badger archetype, I'll just tack some SLA's on top of it as he progresses. Much simpler. :P

Dark Archive

You've got it bossman.

Dark Archive

I’m going to go with the 10 minute background approach. I’m removing some of he mechanical bits in the example I found.

Step 1:
Write five things about your character’s concept and background, five things that you think are the most essential parts of your character. You don’t have to stop at five, if you like…this is just a minimum.

Yuan Ti hatchling rescued from orphanage in the Mwangi Expanse by an Iroran monk.

Curious and knowledgeable. Sure to pursue idea to their logical conclusion

Mentor, Koon, died of old age two years ago. Ripe old age of 136. Closest Kith had to a father

This is Kith’s first time out of the monastery, let alone the country. Everything, at this point, is a new sight to him.

Kith has had a stunted social development. Monks, by their nature, aren’t entirely social creatures. Even still, they might have socialized more were Kith not as alien as he seems.

Step 2:
List two goals for the character that you, as a player, think would be cool to see accomplished in-game. You can change goals later, though you lose all the accumulated Action Points for the goal you abandoned.

-Kith, among other thing, wants to discover who killed his village and why. His faint flashes of memory are useless to him. Vaguely humanoid / Monstrous creatures (distorted by a child’s perception of the world). He does distinctly remember two eagles. He isn’t driven so much by vengeance as by a need to know.

-Kith idolized the Professor. No longer being able to speak with the man himself, Kith aims to find and study works of the late professor while in Ustalav.

Step 3:
List two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character. I will also be creating a third secret which you as a player will not be aware of, so expect some surprises!

-Unknown:The Professor hired a mercenary company to escort him into the Mwangi Expanse some years ago. During their expedition they came across a village of Yuan Ti. The expedition and the Yuan Ti did not partifularly see eye to eye and the Yuan Ti got the worse of the exchange. The mercenaries took their dead with them, while the Yuan Ti were left to rot.

-Known:The darkness that lives in the hearts of the Yuan Ti surfaces from time to time in Kith. He has to fight it back down before it overtakes him. He’s taken to rigorous meditations to try to overcome this. Until he finds a way to do so, he’ll never reach enlightenment.

Step 4:
Describe three people that are tied to the character though blood, romance or honor. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile. All can do something useful for you, if you can get the situations to line up. If you like, you can include an enemy of yours here as well, so I have an instant NPC nemesis to throw at you.

-Professor Lorrimer – Progenitor of this gathering and lecturer for a brief while at the Monastery.

-Uldar – Halfling. Close friend of Kith’s at the Monastery. Uldar had traveled north with Kith, but the parted ways in the south of Varisia. Kith often wonders how his friend is faring.

-Clarence – Human. Former Monk at the Monastery of the Guided Hand. Left on bad terms due to an altercation with a young Kith. Blames Kith for his dismissal.

Step 5:
Describe three memories that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.

-Kith remembers the attack on his village only in the vaguest of ways. He can picture monstrous human faces coming out of the jungle, wielding steel and torches. Screaming eagles attacking the elders. Hiding from the heat of the flames. Then, later, Master Koon.

-Kith can clearly remember a lecture by Professor Lorrimer about the discordance between Positive energy and the undead. The professor spoke for an hour and a half on the subject and Kith was enraptured the entire time.

-Most distinctly, likely because this is the most recent memory, Kith can remember seeing his first dog. He’d certainly read about them in the monastery, but he’d never seen one until reaching a port in Varisia. Since that day he has heavily weighed the idea of purchasing one for himself.

@Count Chocula:

Here's the revised and slightly more expansive/florid version of Rezika the Harpy's Tale.
I included an optional paragraph where her wings have bern removed. Initially I actually completely overlooked the flight capabilities! I'm definitely into having the wings, but ground her if you wish!

Rezika's Tale:

Rezika was a foundling, her parent butchered by adventurers in the wilds of the Ustalav Palatinates and sold to an unscrupulous and cruel Sczarni caravan clan who kept her as a pet/servant/exhibit. [Optional: The wild Sczarni, in an effort to contain their prize, abused the pitiable harpy further by inexpertly removing her wings, mutilating her cartilage and leaving stubby protuberances.]

Professor Lorrimor,  happening to come across the itinerant caravan's "show" and disgusted by the harpy-child's abject state secured her release and became her champion. Rezika had known little other than pain, torment and derision, where there had been suffering, here was succour and solace.

Briefly, in the Professor's care, Rezika was happy but though she proved a compliant child, she was given to rash, violent outbursts that frightened Lorrimer.

Rezika's feral intuition astounded her superiors as did her native intelligence and the Professor wrote or visited her often both to keep in touch but also when he needed particular information or insight.

In Fate's peculiar way, the threads of connection wove a dangerous yet redemptive pattern - Rezika was able to repay her patron's good service by saving his life when, during a visit  to her "home" intruders hired by one of the Professor's detractors sought to slay him. Her temple training stood her in good stead that day and the Professor was equal parts grateful and proud, and not a little bit justified in his own mind that not all creatures are bound by their monstrous heritage, even that "monstrous" or "monster" was more a mindset or group of activities rather than a genetic code or accident of heredity.

Now Rezika is called to the Professor's side on sad, final business, to bury him. She is now civilized, respected and competent. Though she saved her patron once, the failure of his death she feels is hers. Beware the foes of Rezika, and the murderers of Professor Lorrimor

Well, I'm going to hope that I was included in the being able to post after recruitment closed. I couldn't quite make the vampire-plant thing work for me, so came up with something else instead.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have actually played through the first two modules of this AP previously, but I'll do my best not to let that affect me if chosen :)

Linaen:
Will expand on this if necessary.
Linaen was born onto the plane of shadow, like many of his kind; the settlement where he lived was not safe any more, something dark had found them, something they preyed upon the fetchlings who lived there, it was when his mother almost died during an attack--Linaen still an infant--that his parents fled back to the material plane, and found themselves in the region known as Ustalav. They eventually settled in a small village called Vauntil, but his mother never quite recovered, passing away from her injuries less than a year later--or so it seemed. His mother had in a way died of her injuries, the creature that had attacked her was able to infect her mind, and though it could not follow the family to the Material Plane, it's influence could. When she died it sought out another host, and settled upon the closest thing, the maleable mind of a child, Linaen's mind, where it lay quiet, patiently shaping the boy into it's tool as he grew.

It manifested it odd ways, and at first Linaen found himself ostracised; his father had by then become an important craftsman in the village, but none of the other children were allowed to play with him, but... as he matured the perception of an odd boy started to change... Linaen received visions of a glorious 'paradise', and he began to share these visions and tales with the other's of his village. THey still didn't trust him entirely, there always seemed to be something slightly... off about his vision, as of something dark lurking on the edges, but when the talented Professor Lorimor heard of Linaen's fame he paid him a visit, and found his knowledge of things not of this world to be quite remarkable, taking him under his wing. The news of the Professor's death has left Linaen somewhat dispondent, and he has made all haste to travel the miles to Ravengro to pay his final respects, and offer his parting blessings to the professor.

Going for a lovecraftian horror in his head or somesuch, preaching the words of the old gods, maybe try and summon the creature into this world from the plane of shadows, I'm flexible :) If you want to be the voice in his head then please do!

Backstory:

The Iron Peaks of Varisia are a dangerous place for travelers, and like all ogrekin, Raggimung's conception was nothing short of tragic. His mother, a Varisian gypsy enslaved by the ogres, did not survive his gruesome birth. Less than human and less than ogre, the young Raggimung was born into a living hell, facing utter brutality at the hands of his so-called "cousins." As a mere half-blood, he was expected to be the pinnacle of inferiority among his kin. In time he would be exiled from the tribe, and left to fend for himself - it was not uncommon for his kind to commune in Kreegwood. As fate would have it however, this would not come to pass.

Raggimung's human blood was not his weakness like the ogres had believed. Rather, it was his strength. The young ogrekin was not only smarter than his brethren. With his immense right arm, nearly the size of some of their own, he proved to be stronger than them as well. Intimidated by unnatural prowess, the ogres reluctantly allowed him to linger among them, whilst secretly cursing themselves for not killing him when they had the chance. As a part of the tribe, he earned the name "Heavyarm," a testament to his strength. Numerous times, some of his kin attempted to kill him, conflicts which he always overcame. Surrounded by unending cruelty, Raggimung knew that he would never meet true acceptance.

One day, during a raid on a foolhardy caravan passing through the tribe's territory, they took a dozen or so humans prisoner, for use as either slaves or food. Among them was one Petros Lorrimor, who seemed unusually delighted in spite of his dangerous predicament. Left to guard the prisoners, Raggimung found himself intrigued by the Professor's demeanor. Much to his surprise, Lorrimor, fascinated by his heritage, engaged him in conversation. For the first time in his life, someone, anyone, human or ogre or otherwise, was treating him as an equal. After but a few hours, the ogrekin decided that he did not want this man to die.

In an act of rebellion, Raggimung freed Lorrimor, as well as the prisoners at the man's pleading. He covered their escape, killing some of his so-called brethren along the way. Unfortunately, this was one transgression that even the ogres could not overlook. Knowing that every ogre on the mountain would be out for his blood, Raggimung fled into Varisia with the Professor. Giving his savior his thanks, Lorrimor then left him, promising that he would never forget about what he did. Raggimung did not care too much either way - he was simply happy to have finally escaped from his oppressive kin. With nowhere else to go, he took on a life as a nomad.

Raggimung never quite forgot about the Professor. Having saved so many lives then, the mindless slaughter he once knew seemed almost... pointless. Years later, the news of Lorrimor's death was passed onto the ogrekin's hands, much to his bewilderment.

I left the last part just a little vague, in case it could be meshed with someone else's background. Anybody who travels around a lot would work, really.

Alias will be forthcoming - I made just one change on his stat sheet, being changing his rank in Perception to one in Linguistics, just so he could have Giant for flavor reasons.

Liberty's Edge

Ooh! ooh! custom race time! I have a gatorfolk concept that'll be great in swamps! OR maybe I could finally get around to creating the most fabled race of all!

OSTRICHFOLK!!

what. you know you'd play one.

EDIT: awww. interest check already closed. Oh well. Feel free to PM if you want my gatorfolk race build (or the incomplete ostrichfolk one, lol.)

Daynen - Recruitment has been closed for 2 days on this campaign.

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, I have a bad habit of finding a recruitment thread and reading up on it, only to skip to the end and make my post, lol. Guess I should stop that.

I've got everything I need, expect results tomorrow at the latest!

Ooh, I'm kinda excited. Perhaps just impatient. One of the two...

Me too, Axol. Both... wish we could all make the cut... I SO want to play this game with these characters...

I don't think that I'll get any sleep this night. Especially since this is probably my only opportunity to play a demon lord badger. :/

Anyway, being an eternal optimist, I put up an alias.

After much deliberation, I decided that the fairest way to choose 4 players (+the ghost of Lorrimor) from all of the wonderful characters submitted would be a semi-random method involving rolling dice (some characters got small bonuses for things I like). I then examined the party to make sure it would function well, so here it is.

The party will be:

The Ghost of Lorrimor
Maelchar the Vampire
Mira and her Doll
Raggimung the Half Ogre
Kezsothar the Demon Lord

Thanks to all who submitted, those of you chosen head to the discussion forum for a little last minute balancing/background.
