The shadows call!

The sleepy town of Karpad in shadow-haunted Nidal has long been overseen by the Boroi family, and until a few weeks ago, the citizens under Baron Stepan Boroi's rule have lived uneventful lives of relative peace. Recently, however, the outbreak of a virulent and fatal disease and a number of mysterious disappearances have left the people of Karpad paranoid and fearful. Even Baron Stepan has been acting strangely, and now the tenuous balance of racial tensions between Karpad's human and fetchling populations stands on the verge of collapsing into total anarchy. Can the PCs uncover the root of Karpad's problems and put an end to the deadly virus, the terrifying disappearances, and the miasma of fear and distrust that threatens to overwhelm the region?

Alrighty folks, I plan on running The Midnight Mirror with a group of 4 adventurers. My games are more story driven with a focus on roleplay so combat will be treated cinematic. As such, Min-Maximus the Mighty and other special snowflakes will not be considered. Please note that this adventure deals with investigation and horror so keep that in mind when creating your character.

I want players to post daily with the exception of weekends – we've lives afterall! Please post your builds below! Feel free to ask If I happened to miss anything!

The deadline for submission is April 2nd.

Game Information
Stats: 4d6, Drop Lowest or 20point Buy ( 07 lowest stat )
Classes and Archetypes: CRB, APG, UC, UM, AC, (No Gunslinger, Summoner, Psionics, Non Paizo)
3rd Party Products: Only on a case-by-case basis will I allow this in the game
Races: Core + Fetchling. Others on a case-by-case basis
Starting Cash: Level 4 suggested Gold
Starting Level: 4th
Alignment: No Evil
Skills: Unchained skills are used!

Background Skills explanation:

So basically, skills are broken into 2 lists - Adventuring Skills (stuff that your character has learned in their journey) and Background skills (stuff that your character is passionate about).
From what I understand, aside from the skills you get normally for your class, you're also given +2 background skill points per level that must be spent on the background skills list. It represents what talents and stuff your character knows. This is kinda neat because it frees up your other points if you want to spend it on skills like perception and spell craft.

Adventuring Skills:Acrobatics, Bluff, Climb, Diplomacy, Disable Device, Disguise, Escape Artist, Fly, Heal, Intimidate, Knowledge ~ (arcana), (dungeoneering), (local), (nature), (planes), (religion), Perception, Ride, Sense Motive, Spellcraft, Stealth, Survival, Swim, Use Magic Device

Background Skills:Appraise, Artistry, Craft, Handle Animal, Knowledge ~ (engineering), (geography), (history), (nobility), Linguistics, Lore, Perform, Profession, Sleight of Hand

Character Background: Something simple as to why you're in Karpad.

Since it's sanctioned for PFS play, will you be giving us credit for it (using the standard "homegame" method)?

I am actually interested in this. It is really kind of interesting. I like the RP focus.
Gotta think of class and stuff that I want to play.

Would you be willing to consider the Factotum? (It was created by Paizo and most of the designers are the guys running PF now.)

Modules played under PFS rules still require you to use PFS legal characters. The "home game" method is only valid for Adventure Paths and specific modules that allow such methods (such as Dragon's Demand).

So with the current character guidelines, this game cannot be ran for PFS credit.

Ah, see, Dragon's Demand is what threw me; I didn't know it was only specific modules. Are they listed as a group somewhere, or just on the individual pages?

Still interested, just had the question. After holiday stuff, I'll get a submission in.

Thanks Nebten, but yea, this game unfortunately will not give you credit for PFS play.

@Quintavius Quirinius Quire: I've never heard of such a product! I'm honestly unfamiliar with the Factotum. Could you elaborate, please?

Factotum

It also comes with a specific Font of Inspiration.

Sounds neat! I'll allow it.

Cool

Dice Rolls
17, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13
Adding a floating +2 from race will make that pretty balanced.

Do you allow traits?

Quintavius Quirinius Quire wrote:

Sure! This goes for everyone - 2 Traits are optional but allowed.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "combat will be treated cinematic"? Does that just mean "theatre of the mind" with no maps? Or are we going to fast forward over all combat?

Anon A Mouse wrote:

Sure, I'd be happy to elaborate. I find that any time a map has been displayed in my games, combat comes to a halting grind as players fall into battle chess. I prefer theatre of mind since it skips the (Caldor the Blighted One moves 5ft forward and 10 feet east , swings his mighty +2 frosted axe catching any enemies nearby. If he doesn't then he'll throw his mighty axe in a wide arc, etc).

Only if its absolute necessary will I provide a map.

Let's do the dice roll agaaaaaaaaiiin:

4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 1, 5) = 12=11

4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 1, 6) = 12=11

4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 3, 3) = 12=10

4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 1, 3) = 12=11

4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 4, 5) = 14=12

4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 2, 3) = 12=11

Pfft. 6 point buy. Awesome. I think those are the stats of your average modern-day high school sophomore.

Come on, baby! Daddy needs more carrying capacity...

4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 6, 3) = 18 - 15

4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 4, 6) = 17 - 16

4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 3, 2) = 10 - 8

4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 6, 1) = 11 - 10

4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 5, 3) = 12 - 11

4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 3, 6) = 14 - 12

Hey, 18 points.
...sorry Derz.

Oh alright, I was wondering what you meant by that for combat. I use that style too in most of my games.

I am going to see what I can come up with for this.

4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 3, 5) = 154d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 5, 6) = 204d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 2, 4) = 144d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 1, 1) = 114d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 6, 6) = 204d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 5, 6) = 20

I AM THRILLED with this idea. I love mystery/horror themes, and role-play-heavy games. I'll throw a couple of rolls down and see what happens!

4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 6, 3) = 20 17
4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 5, 1) = 13 12
4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 1, 1) = 9 8
4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 4, 4) = 16 14
4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 6, 1) = 16 15
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 5, 3) = 20 17

Hmm. Good set, and I always love the roleplay hooks of having an 8 in something. I'll try to have something up today, or tomorrow for sure!

Rolls

Oh, yeah! Nidal!
Thinking an Inquisitor of Zon-Kuthon, sent to investigate the unrest by the Umbral Court.

I have read the module before, although that was around a year ago.
Still, I thought you should know.

Edit: Oh, yeah. Dice rolls, duh.

4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 5, 3) = 13 10
4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 5, 3) = 14 12
4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 6, 5) = 20 17
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 6, 1) = 14 13
4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 2, 1) = 12 10
4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 3, 2) = 10 8

16 point buy...hmm.

If one reroll is allowed...

4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 3, 2) = 10 8
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 4, 6) = 22 18
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 3, 4) = 14 12
4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 4, 6) = 17 16
4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 4, 6) = 19 15
4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 5, 4) = 16 15
That's better, but I'll wait until I know rerolls are allowed to begin using them.

I've decided to submit a Fetchling Oracle. I just need to find something suitably flavorful for the Mystery.

I'll start on an alias now.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Here is Roycilo's submission. Well underway, but not yet done.

How did you want us to handle HP?

I may submit something. You said you'd have to individually approve 3rd party stuff. Would you consider a homebrewed archetype? I can't use all 3(4?) published archetypes because they overlap...so I homebrewed my own archetype. If you're willing to consider it, I can post/send the details.

Oh HP...I knew I forgot something!
HP Full at first then every level half+1.

@Alyksandrei, sorry I'm not interested in home brewed archetypes.

@bigrig107: Why don't you stick to point buy if you're determined to have acceptable stats? I don't see the point of re rolling.

Also typing from a mobile device is not fun!

No problem, I can get almost every ability I want with existing archetypes.

I agree, typing on a phone sucks. Need to switch to computer soon...

I just saw people rerolling once, so I thought it was acceptable.
I'm okay with the second spread, if that's okay.

Also, I believe you have two PM's from me waiting on you?
Or did you not get them?

I'm interested, but between my character not coming together as I had hoped and the increase in work stuff recently, I think I'm going to back out. Have fun all!

Alrighty folks, just a quick check in on our players. I hope everything is going well with character gen. Feel free to ask for help if you're having trouble!

And the roster so far is....

Quintavius Quirinius Quire as the Factotum

Roycilo as Zaitherin Someras Fetchling Oracle of Gorum

bigrig107 as Unnamed Fetchling Inquisitor

Aerodan, Alyksandrei, WhiteWalker Jon, DM Math Pro, and Derz as ???

Did I miss anyone?

Just checking in, thinking about changing races. That -2 to Wis hurts just a bit too much.
Possibly drow-blooded half elf? Will have to see what I want to go with.

The Exchange

Lets see what the gods shall bring me:

Stat 1: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 2, 5) = 14 = 12
Stat 2: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 2, 2) = 12 = 10
Stat 3: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 5, 3) = 15 = 14
Stat 4: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 1, 6) = 15 = 14
Stat 5: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 1, 6) = 13 = 12
Stat 6: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 1, 2) = 6 = 5

Kickass 5 point buy

What level does this go up to when the adventure is done. Also what about the sentinal prestige class from inner sea gods but this may not matter if we don't reach 6th level.

4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 1, 4) = 13
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 2, 5) = 15
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 3, 2) = 11
4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 6, 5) = 18
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 5, 1) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 2, 5) = 14

So that is 17 13, 13, 12, 12, 9

Which does not really work that well with a fighter with a glaive So I think I will use point buy

I assume that this adventure will go up to level 6.

How do you feel about Crafting Feats? Can we use them before the game?

You say Unchained skills are in use, specifically the Background/Adventuring variant. What about Fractional BAB/Saves? It can make a huge difference to multiclass characters.

Also, one of the archetypes I'm looking at (Toxophilite) is from Ranged Tactics Toolbox. While not, technically, a 3pp, it isn't on your list of automatically approved archetype sources. So I'm asking for approval before I post my character.

I think Zaitherin is done, although I want to add a little to her backstory. I know you said a short blub, but I may a little more.

Sure! If that helps you make a character thats just great.

@bigrig107: crafting sucks in game. If you feel inclined to have a wardrobe of stuff then go for it.

This is my WIP version of Kyla darkwood.

Howdy folks,

Since submissions for this module have been rather limited, I'm going to extend the deadline to give more players time to develop their characters.

The new deadline will be for - Friday April 8th.

Here's the roster as well. Keep them characters coming!
- - - - - - - - - -

Quintavius Quirinius Quire as the Factotum

Roycilo as Zaitherin Someras Fetchling Oracle of Gorum

Don't have a name yet, and I haven't typed it up as a profile yet, but I've got a Ranger (skirmisher, toxophilite, infiltrator) all built and equipped.

One more question, though: would it be possible to have a hedgehog as an animal companion, even though it's not on the normal list? I think it would just be really cute and fun, and I'd rather have "useless or suboptimal" over "rules-as-written", especially for something I have have a habit of forgetting about. The one time I did run a character with an animal companion, the other players at the table wouldn't let me forget about it, but it was more flavor than mechanics.

Can't believe I forgot about this one. I had an intriguing idea, too:

How do you feel about me using an NPC class? Like looking at my snarky comment from before,I was thinking with those abysmal stats and an NPC class I could make a character who actually is a scared-out-of-his-wits teenager (maybe an Expert or an Adept) to fit in with the horror elements.

This sounds cool. I'm thinking of a "plague doctor" type concept. One 3pp archetype that fits my concept is The Herbalist arcchtype for alchemist. Can I use it? If it's not allowed I'll just use a pure alchemist.

Would you consider a dhampir here?
One of their alternate racial traits, Heir to Undying Nobility, suggests that vampires are quite common in Nidal. Why wouldn't they be? The land's covered in darkness most of the time.

Heir to Undying Nobility, Inner Sea Races:
Descended from undead nobility, perhaps from Geb, Nidal, or Ustalav, some dhampirs inherit a bit of their ancestors’ ability to control living beings. They can use command and charm person each once per day. This racial trait replaces the spell-like ability racial trait.

Intrigued and thinking...

Sorry for the (collapsible) wall of text. I tend not to create an alias, even temporarily, until I know I'll be using it in a game. But all the vitals should be there...except backstory. That's coming. Soon. Ish.

This looks interesting

stat: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 6, 4) = 14
stat: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 1, 6) = 10
stat: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 6, 5) = 15
stat: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 3, 5) = 15
stat: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 6, 3) = 19
stat: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 6, 1) = 16

13,9,13,12,16,15

Let me see what I can do with this.

@Alyksandrei: Yes, you can have a pet hedgehog as an animal companion so as long he's not blue, loves chili cheese dogs and is fast.

@Derz: While the flavor would be fun, I feel that if you used an NPC class, you wouldn't be able to keep up with your allies. Why don't you use a point buy if you're concerned about your stats.

@legoguy4492: Ooh a plaguedoctor. Go for it but please don't experiment on me!

@bigrig107: Sure if it makes you happy.

Awesome. I'll work on finishing up her stats tomorrow...if I can figure out how it works. I've never built an animal companion before - any d20-system rangers I've played always use ACFs to avoid the complication.

stats: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 4, 4) = 15 13
stats: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 3, 6) = 16 13
stats: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 5, 1) = 12 11
stats: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 5, 1) = 9 8
stats: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 5, 5) = 16 15
stats: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 4, 2) = 11 9
I'll accept these stats.
