DM Nerk |
Since the special properties/flavor of magic items haven't really come into play, I'll skip that, though you should feel free, if you're so inclined.
Otherwise, yes, same chargen as before.
Assuming Oskar isn't coming back, that leaves us with a fighter 5 rogue 3, a bard 8 and what looks like a fighter 8.
Captain Fremont |
+1 Rapier
Creator: 1d20 ⇒ 20 - Gnome: The item is crafted to appear thoroughly unremarkable. The tiem might look tattered, battered, or well-worn - all the better to discourage thieves from stealing it.
Nature: 1d8 ⇒ 4 - Ornament: Used in parades or to comemorate a special occasion, the item is festooned with inset gemstones, gold or platinum inlays, and decorative filigrees. It might have been commissioned as a gift to commemorate a great deed.
Minor Property: 1d20 ⇒ 17 - War Leader: The bearer can cause hsi or her voice to carry clearly for up to 500 feet.
Minor Quirk: 1d20 ⇒ 5 - Covetous: The item's bearer becomes obsessed with material wealth.
+1 Shield
Creator: 1d20 ⇒ 3 - Ancient Human: This item is old and of human manufacture. The meaning of any symbols or heraldry emblazoned upon it is likely lost to antiquity. Pick a fallen kingdom from your campaign or an ancient figure of legend. The item is connected to that place or person.
Nature: 1d8 ⇒ 1 - Arcane: This item was created by a powerful mage and bears his or her symbol or sigil. A faint magical glow surrounds it, but the light is too dim to illuminate anything other than the item.
Minor Property: 1d20 ⇒ 12 - Sentinel: Choose a kind of creature that is an enemy of the item's creator. This item glows when such creatures are within 100 feet of the item.
Minor Quirk: 1d20 ⇒ 13 - Mistaken: While in possession of the item, the bearer is often mistaken for someone else.
Intriguing. So the rapier is made to look unremarkable because it's gnome maker decided to bedazzle it. Despite this, he gave it not only a keen edge, but the ability to allow it to carry the weilder's voice upon the wind to reach those within 500 feet of him. And of course being a trickster, as all gnomes are, he decided to make the item's weilder develop a fascination with material wealth.
The shield on the other hand belonged to an ancient hero and is even emblazoned with his crest. While it always glows with a soft light, the glow increases when within 100 feet of one of the ancient hero's enemies. Despite being ancient, the hero's crest is well-known and often brings people to believe the current wielder is actually the legend of old.
Sound about right? And would you care to choose the creature that triggers the shield's sentinel ability? Or is there a chart for that?

I'm still in but Olden is *shakes head* not up for going back into THAT!
I think I will also re-roll, See if I can't eek out a wizard.
4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 5, 6) = 20 16
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 4, 5) = 20 16
4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 3, 1) = 12 11
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 1, 5) = 15 14
4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 2, 3) = 12 10
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 4, 3) = 18 15
Uhm yeah, wizard ahoy!
Edit: Assuming that is okay, I mean. I will work on the character anyway but if Nerk wants me to keep the bard I will.
DM Nerk |
Nope, I'm happy to have you reroll.
The way I look at it, that encounter was never meant to be winnable as a straight fight. It's meant to be something that you sneak around and approach with caution, probably encounter and then retreat from.
I'll wait a little longer on Oskar before we start rerecruiting.
Luthia Manfather |

Back in the days of Monty Haul, my brother DM'ed a group that had recently been to the Barrier Peaks. The killer monk in that party rode onto Nosnra's feast table on a wheely sled. Much fun ensued.
Have lots of fun guys, Luthia out!
Captain Fremont |
I think I'll reuse Captian Fremont here for this character and I'll let you know once I have his stats up tonight. Otherwise, he is built to be a tank.
His defense should sit somewhere around (+4 Armor, +5 Dex, +1 Defense Training, +3 Shield) 23 with the potential to bump it up to 32 once per round when an attack would hit him.
He'll be easily capable of ranged or melee combat considering he's a Dex based character. This in turn means he has a good initiative as well.
On top of everything he moves at a speed of 40ft and if he attacks someone in melee combat, he no longer provokes from them for the rest of his turn.
And on top of it all, he'll be a Halfling. Also, I've not found anything about weapon damage adjusting based off size, but please let me know if there is something about that.
Captain Fremont |
Correct, he has no real reason to use a "Heavy" quality weapon considering his build, not to mention the fact that he is rather fond of using a shield.
I hope all of this makes him a more capable of surviving this time around. He'll drop to 35 feet per movement, but in turn he'll be able to move through most of his enemies spaces.
That raises another question. Is there some kind of check to move through an opponent's space? Do you just provoke?
Edit: From what I'm seeing, you can freely move through an opponent's space without a check or roll when they are two (one if your a Halfling) size category larger than you. However, you would provoke if you move outside of their reach.
Eukaeros Shadowstep |
All done I think. Nerk can you look at "Disappearing Trick" in the mage's Illusion school write up and adjudicate what you think that translates to? From my reading it almost seems like I have invisibility at my fingertips all the time, but I want your input.
Oh Joshua/Freemont/"Lucky" now I am going to be so confused when I look at your character sheet in the other game...oh well ;p
Eukaeros Shadowstep |
No parade raining, I thought it was WAY strange, so I am more than happy with how it works.
I have to admit that I like the feel, not yet playing of how multi-classing feels on paper. I feel like its the "closest" I've gotten to this sort of a concept mechanically for a while.
Excited to see how it goes.
Malaki Davont |
After seeing Elwe in battle, I came to a nasty realization about Malaki. Think how much nastier he would be if using a Greataxe as well as Great Weapon Master, combined with his Assassinate ability? Granted, it only truly shines at the start of combat, and he would need to be Str based instead of Dex, but still! Nasty...
12+2d12+6+ double STR Mod...hmmm, with two attacks, plus two more if he Action Surges...nasty combo to be hit with at the start of combat.
Malaki Davont |
And agreed, really enjoying the Multiclassing system here. Not sure how I feel about Rogue, as it seems to be way too powerful of a 1 lvl dip, but beyond that I like it. Kinda wish it was more like 2nd Edition, where you actually leveled in multiple classes at the same time, but with everyone using the same EXP Chart and such, I doubt there would be a good way to balance that without just playing a Gestalt Game.
Captain Fremont |
Elwë would have been more ridiculous with a greataxe when he crit.
Normal Hit:
- +1 Greatsword - 2d6+5 Avg. Damage - 12
- +1 Greataxe - 1d12+5 Avg. Damage - 11.5
Great Weapon Master:
- +1 Greatsword - 2d6+5+2d6+4 Avg. Damage - 23
- +1 Greataxe - 1d12+5+1d12+4 Avg. Damage - 22
Normal Critial:
- +1 Greatsword - 12+5+2d6 Avg. Damage - 24
- +1 Greataxe - 12+5+2d12 Avg. Damage - 30
Great Weapon Master Critical:
- +1 Greatsword - 12+5+12+4+2d6 Avg. Damage - 40
- +1 Greataxe - 12+5+12+4+2d12 Avg. Damage - 46
Getting that extra weapon die when you crit is nice.
DM Nerk |
Gentlemen: This is the new recruitment thread. I'm looking for between one and four additional players. Feel free to introduce yourselves there should anyone turn up. In fact, please do. I'll be back online Monday or maybe Sunday night, so if you're so inclined, answer any questions that people might have.
Except lie about what a jerk I am. No need to scare anyone away.
Max Gain |
Found it, will make an alias soon.
Here it is, Max Gain, do we just move straight over to gameplay?
Eukaeros Shadowstep |
And by someone taking Rope Trick we mean me...I'll drop Aura of Invis to pick it up. Eukaeros is more of a lone operative type so I can justify it in my mind.
I won't prepare it out the gates but I am leaving one slot unprepared for the day so we can use it for that if we need to.
Roman Andari |
We should probably start brainstorming how the new guys arrive. Did Malaki go to town and recruit more help? Did we arrive late the next day? Granted it's a dungeon crawl so we don't technically need much. But I'd like a little bit more story than having us magically appear inside the dungeon.
Captain Fremont |
It could be that whomever hired the original group didn't expect them to finish the job and thusly sent out a second group to make sure it got done.
I mean s/he did send a group of five to take on a large number of wolves, orcs, ogres, and giants by theirselves.
And sorry for the delay, I've had plenty going on as of late so I've been a bit delayed in posting.
DM Nerk |
Let's see....
Elwe and Luthia were bludgeoned to death. Oskar barely escaped with Malaki and Olden disappeared and presumably fled. I'd imagine that with Oskar and Malaki safely hidden in the cave with plenty of food and drink, Arial would have realized the need for reinforcements and returned to civilization to recruit the lucky halflng, Eukaros, Roman and Max.
Though the rules of Next assume a night's sleep heals all wounds, we can imagine that Malaki's flesh needs time to knit after having been torn apart by worgs, and that Oskar will be on healing duty until the new crew arrives.
"The Lucky Halfling" |
So are we about to start back up then?
Also, Harold's AC dropped to a 21. I realized I was miscalculating it so I had to adjust things a little, but that's still not too bad of an AC.
You can expect to see Harold running into the thick of combat to take advantage of his 2-3 attacks with his rapier to keep his opponent's on their toes while he moves about them. Also, you can expect him to use his parry ability on the first attack that would hit him every round for the most part. This in turn means his AC will jump to a 30 against that attack.
"The Lucky Halfling" |
Yeah, I'm going to enjoy taking on three giants at once.
After taking a swipe at each, they'll no longer have the ability to take attacks of opportunity on him for the round which leaves him free to move through one of their spaces to put some distance between him the other two.
Max Gain |
So do we join them then, or do you announce this in gameplay when they find us?
Roman Andari |
I had basically intended for Roman to be more of a support cleric. So I'll be happy to concentrate a Bless spell so Oskar won't have to. This would give him a chance to let loose his war domain as it was intended.
Eukaeros Shadowstep |
I forgot to do this:
Wand:
1d20 ⇒ 17 Elven (Fitting)(Light and leaf/vine motif)
1d8 ⇒ 3 Storied (Belonged to a hero or villain) [Uhm Alaeivain Esterthein the sacker of Hart Hold]
1d20 ⇒ 6 Guardian [+2 Init]
1d20 ⇒ 20 Slothful [-2 Init] That doesn't make sense? Per instruction I will re-roll This...
1d20 ⇒ 18 Repellent. ( Brings discomfort foreboding...good reason not to love using it since it belonged to a villain. heh)
BAg of Holding:
1d20 ⇒ 8 Dwarven (Runes and such)
1d8 ⇒ 5 Prophecy (Destined to be important)
1d20 ⇒ 19 Wicked (Seeds doubt as to benevolent acts)
1d20 ⇒ 12 Metamorphic (Changes appearance in slight ways, no control, no change in functions)
"The Lucky Halfling" |
I left a question for you about traits in your recruitment thread. I would really appreciate knowing your answer if you have a moment before you head out. Otherwise, enjoy your weekend and have a good time.
