@Guy Do I really need to explain FCB? Simple, Choose a favoured class. I recommend the one that you want to gain levels in, though you could still choose expert and have the front-loaded benefits if you really wish, but eventually your other class would go above 7th level and you would miss out on further favoured class bonuses. Run out of class skills? Put ranks in non-class skills then. Crisis averted. Experts have good will saves because they focus on their mind(skills and such) rather than their body. If that's not a good enough reason, the rules say experts get good will saves, so experts will have good will saves.

@Cooil There are some things in there that could help, repairing technology for example. The craft skills are great, though craft(pharmaceutical) could just call itself craft(alchemy) or heal. I think there are too many new knowledge skills there, Art, behavioral sciences and business could all be a profession. Civics, current events, popular culture and streetwise could all come under Knowledge(local). Earth and life sciences and physical sciences could be knowledge(engineering) or knowledge(nature). Tactics just seems completely unnecessary. Technology would actually be the only one I see worth adding if profession(programmer/ICT/etc.) doesn't really fit. So basically what Zanbabe said about "existing skills are expanded to allow for such interaction" is how I will be doing it and only adding skills when that expansion doesn't really makes sense. Still, use d20modern for ideas for your character if you wish. We can fix or readjust appropriate skill naming after selection.

First post on new page edit: All character creation rules are in the campaign tab here. So you don't have to search through all of my posts and possibly miss something. Recruitment will be open till the end of the month at least.

Guys...

I think I am going to withdraw my interest. I have a bit too much on my plate right now.

Keeping existing skills in Pathfinder to deal with new technology makes sense if you're only occasionally dealing with technology such as finding an item or exploring a high tech structure. If you're in a technological society, it would not work very well, but then it sounds like we're not going to be role playing much in the world of the near future, so that's probably not an issue.

I set up the expert 7 build as a preliminary look. See the spoiler at the top of my profile for my choices. He's got more in Knowledge (Engineering) than in Nature, which seems appropriate for a physicist, but with a smattering of other skills to cover knowledge of chemistry, biology, and medicine.

His other emphasis is religion and systems of magic and ritual, which should prepare him well for a class like Shaman or oracle or cleric, which would benefit from high wisdom.

Another sourcebook for interesting ideas of mixing Pathfinder and higher tech is Anachronistics Adventures, by Owen K.C. Stevens, published by Rogue Genius Games. It is heavy on classes that would fit in a pulp fiction world, but it includes guns and some modern technology. It sticks to the standard Pathfinder skills. It follows somewhat the D20 Modern model of six classes focused on the six ability scores, with a slew of archetypes to provide a wide variety of roles.

Ranger: Fort and Ref.

Rogue: Ref.
Cleric, Sorcerer and the like have good Will save, but only 2+int skill points...

I am quite interested and glad I found this offering. I am thinking of a bright archeologist and language expert who dabbles in herbal medicines and practices martial arts, mostly as a way to keep in shape. He would likely later become an Inquisitor of some flavor. If that sounds reasonable I'll work up a detailed background.

That's more reasonable that some of my background, so I think you should just go for it. GM will tell you if you go overboard on your skill justification. :)

Grr. Not Inquisitor, but investigator. Sorry. And thanks for the encouragement Zanbabe. I'll start writing. :)

Faaaascinating. Dotted.

I am pleased to submit Dr. Gordon Alexander for consideration. I have created a full alias in draft form because I had to build him to know his story. This information is included in the alias but I am also putting it here for easy reference.

Backstory:

The son of a US ambassador, Gordon grew up living all over the world. Groomed to be a statesman, he enjoyed the best schools during the day and private tutors in the evenings to learn the local languages. While his father pushed education and polish, his mother, a high school and college athlete, pushed his physical training. The result was a well-educated and fit young man that had spent little time around kids of his own age, and thus was slightly socially awkward outside his inner circles and area of expertise. His only regret was never learning to play a musical instrument.

At age 12 he lived in China and while mastering the local Mandarin dialect he also learned an opened hand form of martial arts called Sanshou that was taught at a local monastery. This focused on quick strikes, acrobatics, and ambush. He developed a discipline through this study that has stuck with him into adulthood and a day seldom passes that Gordon does not perform his katas. He also gained his interest in mysticism here. But it was in Egypt at age 14 that he became fascinated with what would later become his vocation: Archeology.

Accepted into the University of California-Berkley at the age of 17 he quickly earned a BS and MS degree in archeology while minoring in linguistics. While there he managed to earn another masters in ancient languages, which seemed to come easy to him. His father was not totally happy with Gordon’s choice of study but could not help but be pleased with his academic achievements. He was accepted into Princeton where he earned PhDs in both archeology and ancient languages, and also learned he loved to teach. His college high point was a semester back in Egypt working at a new dig site where he distinguished himself for both hard work and the ability to live in remote and uncomfortable surroundings. This is where his environment dictated that he learn survival.

After his graduation it was the most natural thing in the world for Gordon to stay in academia. Accepted as a professor of Archeology at Columbia University he soon was well published, a favorite lecturer, and tenured. Shortly after he started to follow the work and theories of Mr. Diamond.

Dr. Alexander is perhaps the most accomplished scholar of ancient civilizations of his age. He demonstrates an uncanny ability to make leaps in logic that are not linear to most and continues to be on the forefront of archeological discovery and advancement. And as he learned to survive and thrive in the politically charged world of modern academics he learned both to be diplomatic and to buff when needed, and to understand the innuendo and read sincerity in others.

Why do you want to be working in the lost city?:

Are you kidding me? As a scholar, leading archeologist and linguist, Dr. Alexander wants to be in charge of the investigation of the lost city and resent's both his late invite and the government's heavy hand in all this. They just need to back off and let the professionals do their jobs.

This a a dream come true and once in a lifetime opportunity for someone like Gordon Alexander. And he believes his skill set will be critical in unlocking the secrets of the city.

Who hired you and why do they want you working there?:

Mr. Diamond requested Dr. Alexander's attention on this expedition personally, convincing Dr. Alexander's dean to release him for a full semester. Dr. Alexander's reputation as a scholar of ancient history and languages along with his knowledge of archeology has made him quite well known in certain small circles.

What do you think of Mr. Diamond's theory? (before anything weird happened at the wall):

As a scientist, and skeptic in general, Dr. Alexander is not fully on board with any theory and needs scientific proof. Having survived in the academic world for close to 20 years he knows better than to openly criticize his sponsor's theory. While he expects to find roots in the city linking it to Mesopotamia or perhaps some Phoenician or pre-Carthian civilization something deep within him hopes that Mr. Diamond is right.

What do you think of Mr. Diamond as a person? (personal, professional, may have met him before):

This is not the first wild theory Mr. Diamond has espoused. Dr. Alexander has followed much of the man's career and marveled at the number of times Mr. Diamond's crazy theories have been proven right, or at least close enough to be of value. Gordon knows the man professionally and has even debated him a couple of times, always taking the more conservative side of an position. Gordon has to admit the man is bright and his jumps in deduction are extraordinary. Gordon likes Mr. Diamond more than he admires him, in truth, and sees him as too much of a rogue, even for the young Mr. Gordon's generation. That said Gordon is flattered that he was chosen for this assignment and is extremely grateful to the man.

This submission is from Skorn.

I'm going to back out of the recruitment for this. My backstory isn't coming together the way I'd like, which means I'm not gonna be able to really put life into the character.

It's a shame. I really like the concept, but the character just isn't working.

So, looks like we have 5 so far:

Zanbabe -- Doctor (Janice) Zeroux, M.D. PhD.
The Mighty Atom -- Jasper Rolla
Clebsch73 -- Cooil MacCray, PhD, DDiv
Kahurangi -- "Fritz" (temporary name)
Skorn -- Dr. Gordon Alexander

2 Days left. I will give anyone still working on a submission or even completely new submissions the rest of the weekend to submit(backstory, answered questions and future class choice is all that is necessary) and on Monday I will make my decision. Currently in the running we have:

Janice Zeroux (future sorcerer)
Jasper Rolla (future paladin)
Cooil MacCray (future shaman)
Gordon Alexander (future investigator)
"Fritz" (incomplete submission data)

I also realised I could have revealed a bit more information about the "Lost City" that most working there would know. So far, every wall relief, and many parts of translated (to varying degrees of accepted accuracy) inscription left in stone seems to display and reference various oddly-shaped people and what are commonly referred to as beasts or creatures. Some are remarkably similar to the animal headed Egyptian depictions and others are even stranger, chimera-like, as if from legend. The strangest thing is that the variety of references from story and legend is so diverse that it lead to the universally accepted (and only agreed upon) fact that the civilisation that lived here had to have had influences or connections over much of the globe. Everything else is disputed and being studied. Much of the city is still being uncovered every day. Though this is a joint international operation, and the biggest find in centuries if not ever, the northern African countries' national security protocols are not letting enough people in fast enough for most people's liking.

Hi! Currently working on a submission for Carmen Espinosa, a translator/philologist (future Wizard or Arcanist, still deciding). An all time fan of ancient and obscure languages, attending a seminar under Dr Gordon Alexander contributed to the sharpening of her skills and helped her being recognized by the international academic circles as a prodigy translator.

Being deployed on the field next to what she considers her mentor makes her proud and will bring out the best of her.

More to come!

Edit: Just one question, do we get the +1 Attribute point at 4th level with our 7 levels in Expert?

Hello,

This sounds super interesting. I'm new to the forums and this will be my first PbP here. I'm thinking of a character with a religious background, Father McKinley a Catholic priest sent as an investigator/liaison from the Vatican. As a resident of the vatican, he has access to libraries and vaults full of occult texts kept hidden from the general population in order to suppress their secrets, Hermetic, Alchemical, Kabbalah, Gnostic, etc. Father McKinley has made frequent use of this access and has become a scholar on these texts. His working theory is going into his investigation is that the ruins are from the Biblical age, Old testament, and his personal hidden agenda is to find and secure any and all texts and scripture (scrolls, parchments, engravings, hieroglyphs, etc.) to add to the Vatican's vaults before they are leaked to the masses. As far as future classes, a Cleric makes the most sense, but so does and Occultist, perhaps a multiclass of both.

Will start working on a character sheet today.

would studies in real world mystical and occult practices and esoterica qualify one for skills in Knowledge(arcana) and/or Knowledge(planes)?

We talked about that a little, and decided probably yes. In general, just justify it the best you can, and if it is too much, the GM will tell you when he goes over your character.

Posting to formally apply.

Background:

Father Desmond McKinley was born and raised in Boston, MA, USA within a strongly Catholic family. His involvement with the church helped him to stay out of trouble as a youth and kept him disciplined in his studies. He was a Honors student at Northeastern University where he studied Philosophy and Religion, and entered into seminary at St. John's where he earned a Master of Divinity. He entered into priesthood at the age of 27 in the Archdiocese if Boston. His penchant for research and investigation did not go unnoticed, and at age 30, he was recruited by the Vatican to investigate the legitimacy of religious artifacts and holy relics. Desmond soon learned that the agenda of the church was suppression. His primary task was to find enough evidence to disprove claims, then confiscate the evidence for the Vatican's vaults. Eventually gaining access to these vaults himself, Desmond began secret, private research of occult, mystical, and esoteric knowledge. Desmond had to hide his fascination and learned the art of secrecy. He never lost his faith, instead it deepened and expanded as he poured through Gnostic scrolls and Medieval grimiores. He deepened his prayer with yogic meditation techniques and Hermetic rights.

Father McKinley was sent to the ruins as the official investigator/liaison of the Vatican. His orders were the usual, disprove any and all claims that delegitimize the authority of the Church. His personal agenda is to find and collect, possibly smuggle out, all esoterica for his private research.

Father McKinley received a thorough dossier on the project to date including information on Dr. Diamond and his theories. Personally he is intrigued but professionally he stands opposed to such notions. He only was briefly introduced to the doctor. They shook hands and exchanged greetings.

At the time if the incident at the wall, Father McKinley was studying the arrangement of circles themselves, comparing them to alchemical sigils found in Hermetic texts.

Class:
I foresee Father McKinley becoming a cleric or if possible, a multiclass cleric/occultist with cleric favored.

Submitting Dr. Maxwell Kevarian, expert linguist and amateur rock climber.

Background:

Maxwell was born into a middle-class family in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a very bright child, able to learn languages with incredible age. By the age of 15, he could speak Arabic, Spanish, and Chinese with relative ease. When he understood he had a gift for language, he began to pursue the field of linguistics. His intelligence helped him attend Harvard University to study linguistics and eventually attain a doctorate. After graduation, he began working to unravel the mysteries of the languages of the world. He pored through dusty tomes and weathered inscriptions to find the secrets of long-forgotten tongues. While he was able to piece together many ancient languages, there were inconsistencies in the oldest ones. Words that didn't fit into any known family, used to describe concepts the human mind cannot fully comprehend, made for mouths that do not work quite like ours. He began to find patterns, and named this tongue Aklo, forming it from the most common and pronounceable sounds he could find.

He was invited to the ruins to decipher any texts or other writing that might be uncovered.

He believed Mr. Diamonds theory. The fragments of Aklo he found made him sure that forces beyond humanity existed on Earth before we did.

When the event at the wall happened, Maxwell was studying the glyphs, making connections with various other languages.

Mr. Diamond was an interesting man. Maxwell wanted to learn more about what Diamond was proposing.

Allison Green grew up on a horse farm and has a deep abiding love for nature. As a kid, besides being a dedicated 4H member, she participated in trick riding competitions with the enthusiasm only a teen aged girl could have for the sport. As a young adult she joined the SCA and got into survival skills and acting and earned a degree in communications and linguistics. Eventually she ended up working for Dr. Token, an accomplished scientist, as an administrative assistant/liaison.

Note: I'd prefer for her to be the assistant of a player character if possible rather than a placeholder like Dr. Token. Her skills in diplomacy/linguistics would be useful to any world class travelling scientist.

Why do you want to be working in the lost city? She goes where the boss goes, taking notes, doing research, and smoothing the way so he can do his important work.
Who hired you and why do they want you working there? Dr. Token hired her for her personal skills and ability to cut through red tape. In fact it was she who landed him the position moving his name to the head of the list of consideration.
What do you think of Mr. Diamond's theory? (before anything weird happened at the wall) She really doesn't care. Her job is to keep Dr. Tokken happy and take notes.
What do you think of Mr. Diamond as a person? (personal, professional, may have met him before) He keeps things mostly professional and only hit on her once. Took her refusal gracefully and moved on. Not a bad guy. A bit long winded, but she is used to that type and knows how to cut through the crap. In her world most of the men she runs into have a far higher opinion of themselves than they should. Mostly, though, she deals with the bureaucrats at the gates, not the scientists.

I'm not set on what Allison turns into. Could be the oracle, could be a sorcerer, could be an arcanist. Depends on the party needs.

    @Carmen
I would not worry about being another linguist. It would make sense that they would stack the deck with a lot of linguists considering the nature of the place we were sent to examine. And there is not a lot of useful things you can do with background skill levels and linguist is one of them.

Is it fine to take the additional traits feat now to gain two traits to start with? Of course keeping in mind that any trait type we take cannot be taken from again when we receive the traits you mentioned in an earlier post.

@miteke: I guess so. Anyway, I don't have the time to change anything (and still working on a decent background), so it will have to be like that.

just out of curiousity, what do y'all suppose the domains are of the nameless god of the bible (JHVH) are? So many ways to go about this. I'm kind of thinking Old Testament/New Testament would look like Judgement/Resurrection? Maybe more broadly Law/Good?

Those would work, but I would definitely add Revelation and Light. Redemption also.

Knowledge, Glory, Honor. So many possibilities.

That's an interesting question. My suggestions would be first and foremost the following:

    Community
    Glory
    Law
    Protection
    War

The early Yahweh was a god who was associated with storms, thunder, and lightning, so the Storm subdomain of weather might fit.

The early Yahweh was pretty chaotic (creates the world, pronounces it good, then sends the flood to kill all the evil people, then repents of that, helpful and hurtful in fits and turns) but eventually there is the lawful deity described by the priestly class, so one could take your pick between law and chaos, depending on which aspect you wanted to emphasize.

In my opinion, the Christian appropriation of all this takes the deity in the LG direction, at least based on the teachings of Jesus, so that would open up other possibilities (light, revelation, healing, good, redemption).

Of course, later history changed direction again with the appropriation of Christianity as the religion of Rome. Before then, Christians were being persecuted in part because they said their faith made it impossible for them to be soldiers, but after, you couldn't be in the army unless you were Christian.

Magic and Rites were always a part of the ritual, but they also were hostile to other forms of magic outside the sanctioned rituals.

Though his build is not finished yet, here's Jasper Rolla, the butt-kicking archaeologist!

The Catholic interpretation of God focuses on the Trinity aspect, Father, Son, Holy Spirit. I'm having trouble fitting in the Holy Spirit part, which I feel is really not often discussed in Catholic circles (in my experience). Giving it more thought, Judgement/Redemption feels like a very Catholic interpretation.

Revelation, Light, etc. also aren't just New Testament. Dreams and Prophetic visions are all over the Old Testament, as well as references to God being light and salvation. Light is also part of the Creation... separating Light from Darkness, symbolic of the Good/Evil contrast.

I can't speak to a Catholic interpretation, but I think all of the things you have mentioned fit well.

I think Carmen is more or less finished.

I had a doubt, where to include the ability to write papers properly. I've used Perfomr (Writing), but it could be Profession (Writer). Whatever you rule it to be, it's fine to me, will be just a minor adjustment.

@The Lucky Halfling Yea that feat is ok to take.

@Carmen I don't think writing papers even needs to have it's own skill point allotment.

I'm working on an archaeologist who will go into the bard class with the archetype (archaeologist). While very knowledgeable in most fields, he is known to go by the seat of his pants at times.

My apologies if anything seems off, I wrote this up fairly quickly to make the deadline. Thank you for the consideration and it sounds like quite the interesting campaign.

    John Hickerson:

    Name: Jonathan Hickerson the II
    Nickname: John
Pen Names: Carson Wylde, Harrison Jones

    Profession: Archaeologist
    Class: Expert 7
    Future Class: Archaeologist Bard

    Ability Scores:
    Strength 12 (PB 2)
    Dexterity 14 (PB 5)
    Constitution 12 (PB 2)
    Intelligence 16 (PB 5, +2 Racial Modifier)
    Wisdom 14 (PB 3, +1 Level 4 Modifier)
    Charisma 13 (PB 3)

    Background:
Jonathan Hickerson the II was more well-traveled by the age of 10 than the majority of the people in the world would ever be throughout their lives. This was a result effect of his parents. His father, Jonathan Hickerson, was an exmarine turned bodyguard for his mother, Elizabeth Thimbell, a reknown American Archaeologist. It was through them that he gained a love for knowledge and the unknown.

Through his time spent with his parents, he learned much about the world. Through the people he met during these expeditions, he learned various skillsets. Some of those very skillsets were found unscrupulous by his father, but came in handy in the long run.

It was after he set out on his own that he started to truly shine. Taking after his mother, he became an archaeologist using what he learned to make a name for himself. While he spent most of his time researching for the academic world, he took pleasure in writing fiction about his adventures under pen names that were inspired by some of his favorite fictional characters.

Why do you want to be working in the lost city?
John wants to work in the lost city as it appeals to his love of the unknown and poses to shed light on things that could not priorly be answered.

Who hired you and why do they want you working there?
The American government funded his expedition at the behest of his mother, who refused to go herself. While John was told that his expediction was meant to help uncover answers, he believes that the government is hoping for something more. He is not quite sure of what it is that they are looking to gain, but he is not overly concerned as they got his foot in the door.

What do you think of Mr. Diamond's theory?
While many write off Mr. Diamond's theory, John takes it as a plausible hypothesis of what had been found so far. While it may seem far-fetched, science is bound to fail if people are unwilling to open their minds to the possiblities.

What do you think of Mr. Diamond as a person?
While having never met Mr. Diamond in person, John finds the man a bit eccentric. This does not prevent John from admiring the man's work for not only it's credibility, but it's willingness to go beyond what the normal man might consider possible.

My apologies if anything seems off, I wrote this up fairly quickly to make the deadline. Thank you for the consideration and it sounds like quite the interesting campaign.

    ** spoiler omitted **...

I might be wrong, but I was under the impression that you already start out with two traits: one normal trait, one campaign trait, with the choice of taking a drawback for another trait.

@Carmen I don't think writing papers even needs to have it's own skill point allotment.

Yeah, well, I guess this might seem a bit like splitting hairs in four, but I thought writing papers properly would need some study. As in, being a writer, you know. But anyway, it was only fluff...

Wow even though there were a smaller number of applications to go through than for the more popular paizo APs this was probably the hardest selection process. I wish I could take everyone that applied but alas...

Janice Zeroux, Jasper Rolla, Cooil MacCray, Father McKinley and Gordon Alexander.

If you see your name drop a post with your alias and I will start checking your character sheet while I get the first gameplay post ready.

    Ready for action!

((I didn't know what the special campaign traits were, so I left i that trait blank. ))

Congratulations to those that made it in and thank you for the consideration Diamondust. Good luck with the game.

    Looking forward to it. :)

I'm so silly, but I have created the discussion thread now. Please post there.
