So, tell us what this thing is. If it is within my power I will bring it back to you.

Janice is disappointed that the woman can't help her with her magic, but after she hears about the citadel kicking her out literally naked, she is less worried about what they are being asked to retrieve. She still listens carefully for the answer to Gordon's question though, hoping that it will be something innocuous that couldn't possibly do harm.

Thought I would wait and see if Desmond wanted to add anything.

"It is a small metal knife in a leather sheath. They likely keep it in a vault with other confiscated items. Not many leave so I doubt you should have trouble when you find where they store it."

"As you have promised to aid me, I now aid you." She moves back over to Desmond and makes him sit. She calls out a phrase you do not understand and repeats it several times and when she opens her eyes a few moments later she seems worried. She has not been able to restore his healing. She seems angry, or is it scared? "My magic never fails. How can this be?"

Uh-oh. Time to leave. thinks Janice.

Cooil frowns but says nothing, waiting to learn whether or not Desmond's hearing can be restored.

Has Desmond provided the PCs with an account of what led to his loss of hearing?

I don't believe he told you exactly what happened. Want to see what his reaction to these events are.

I figure it's up to the player to tell us, since we had time during the trip that he could have written down something to satisfy our concern and curiosity. But I don't want to assume he did nor what exactly he said. Cooil would share what Desmond told the group if Desmond would allow it to help the witch understand why perhaps the magic was not working.

Sorry to leave things hanging, I guess maybe since the site update I haven’t seen any updates to the gameplay thread. Desmond hasn’t explained his encounter with the angel or his deafness. He’s mostly been silently following along and waiting for the moment he can have a proper conversation with you all.

Desmond kneels and does as the witch says. He can tell there’s some chit chat between the witch and his companions but can’t follow along. As soon as she lays her hands on him and he feels the tingling of magic, but his hearing doesn’t return, he looks to her quizzically. ”I’m sorry, but is something wrong?!” he shouts directly at her.

Cooil watched and waited. He wanted to know so much: how does magic work? What dangers lurk in the Citidel? Where was this place in relation to earth? What had happened to Father McKinley? Why was the witch unable to heal him?

But he knew that sometimes the answers only come to those who wait patiently and observe carefully.

A favorite aphorism he had come across while studying philosophy was "The reward for patience is patience." And the flip side of this quote was the joke "Lord, give me patience, and give it to me now!"

So he watched the witch and kept quiet.

Grendel backs away from Desmond as he shouts. "However that happened to him, I am unable to reverse it. I cannot say what will become of him but I cannot help."

With a frown of consternation, Desmond looks from Grendel to his companions in the hut. "I don't think she can help," he echoes loudly, "but, maybe it should clear on it's own. Perhaps it is a test of the Lord, but nevermind. My heart is filled with purpose. We were brought here for a reason. We must reach the Citadel and we must help Jasper follow his dream."

He stands with resolve and blesses Grendel with the sign of the cross, "I Thank you for the effort. Peace be with you."

Time to go, I think.

Janice thanks the witch and leaves, waiting for the others outside.

Thank you for trying Grendel . I will still try to help you if I am able. Gordon says.

"Wait," Cooil calls out and steps closer to Grendel. "If we are to go to the Citadel, please educate us on what to expect there. We do not want to get trapped there. What do we need to know about the place and the people who run it? If we can do anything to repay you for this information, please tell us what we might do to help you or your community."
