Oh, come on, you don't want to put Kaede in charge of the schmoozing and the subtlety and the polite conversation? O:)

Hey all, so I'm back in country and on the net. I guess I have a couple turns to catch up on, and I need to level up Sabola.

At last check, I guess that Fabian didn't like the idea of Barbarian-Rogue, so any suggestions on what I should do for my next level instead of Barbarian?

To me barbarian is more of a class that you start out with and then branch on to something else, if desired. I would only allow someone to go into a barbarian class under very specific circumstances (spent a lot of time with tribe, etc.).

I would look to capitalize on your strengths and continue unchained rogue or maybe branch out to slayer and/or fighter for a more 'general' feel. I would also add ranger to the list but you are already playing a ranger in my other game so you have that covered.

Welcome back!

Well, Rogue is a parent class for Slayer, so that choice "usually results in redundant abilities" per the ACG, so I'll pass on that.

Fighter, hmmm, no, I'll pass.

Very well, Unchained Rogue it is.

This, I believe is my progression:

+5 HP (class)
+1 HP (favored class)

+11 Skill Points (8 Class, +2 Int, +1 background)
+1 Bluff (1 skill rank)
+1 Craft (tattoo) (1 skill rank) (background skill)

+1 Disable Device (1 skill rank)
+2 K (religion) (2 skill rank)
+1 Intimidate (1 skill rank)
+1 Perception (1 skill rank)
+1 Sense Motive (1 skill rank)
+1 Stealth (1 skill rank)
+1 Sleight of Hand (1 skill rank)

Feat: Double Slice
+2 Dmg on offhand attacks (Double Slice)

+1d6 sneak attack (5th level rogue)

Skill Unlock: Knowledge (religion) (5th level rogue)

Your PC should have approximately 10,500 gp (4,500 gp more than the 6,000 gp at 4th level) so just 'add up' your equipment so that it matches the wealth value.

Feel free to 'upgrade' your items or acquire new ones (i.e., a +1 armor worth 1,000 gp is now upgraded to +2 armor and worth 4,000 gp).

I was going to make my two cold iron daggers be +1, but Cold iron has that 2000gp "surcharge" for becoming magic, so I'll just get my main hand one made magic I suppose.

+1 to hit and damage on main hand (+1 weapon)

I wasn't aware of that surcharge but in any case, a +1 cold iron dagger is worth 2,000 gp in my game.

Fighting demons is hard enough. :)

Excellent, then I'll take 2!

When dual wielding then, I should be at +7 to hit and 1d4+5 damage on each hand.

"Alright - the book had some notes on how to hide the sword, but it was a bit vague. I think it went..." Arodric draws the sword, makes some passes, and waits. "Apparently..." with a hideous sounds the sword slurps into Arodric's arm, sucked in through the palm.
Arodric stands motionless, horrified expression on his face and eyes locked on his right hand.

Faced with the prospect of spending the evening mingling among the huge, raucous crowd, Kaede had been dubious. Nothing she could have said or done was likely to make her blend in among the townsfolk and visitors. Well, nothing she could have done before.

Kaede had ducked behind one of the buildings as they had entered town, but only a scruffy, long-furred brown cat had emerged. She had spent her day roaming through the tent city, simply taking in the hubbub and listening in on every conversation she could. With the anonymity four legs and fur gave her, she found herself enjoying the buzz of activity more - she didn't miss the stares at all the events Anni had made her attend in Nerosyan. (And maybe she'd also enjoyed a few fish heads one of the cooks had thrown her.)

She rejoined the others later in the evening, prowling imperiously around the fire. "I still like my chances sneaking into the prison like this," she said, punctuating it with a lick of her front paw. "I spent most of the evening running around the tent city as a stray; hopefully it'll make my being around the sheriff's house a little more believeable. That's where they're keeping them, apparently - the sheriff's basement. If someone can come with me and distract the guards, maybe get them to open a door a little, I might be able to sneak in easier. If not, I can try my chances finding a window slit to squeeze through."

Hahaha, yes, well. So, it's an amazingly good scenario, and one that I completely enjoyed playing with what turned out to be the PERFECT character for the scenario.

I'm willing to play it, but let me lay out the problem:

1) This is a "talky talky" module
2) Sabola is seemingly the only true "talky talky" character in the group
3) Talky talky characters largely drive the group's progress in a talky talky module
4) Having played it before, and been the talky talky character when doing so, it seems extremely unlikely that I could do this, and credibly act as if I didn't know what was going on
5) Thus, we would have a player who had done the module, simply replaying it, with a few supporting cast members

I recommend one of the others jack up their talky skills, and I sit this portion out.

No, no, no. No sitting anything out. I want everyone involved. :)

However, feel free to NOT lead every situation. We can have great RPing with Hedda's 'rough people skills', Kaede's 'nature theme', Kazmuk's 'scholarly approach', and Arodric's 'blundering' trying to obtain information from the 'townies'. Or anything else you guys come up with.

However, do try and refrain from making any conclusions with information previously known.

But I do trust you (and everyone) to keep player and character knowledge separate. There's virtually no other way to play.

"Look, there's an easy way to get into a jail. It's getting out again that's harder."
"We're going to need a cover story. Let's pick something close to the truth. I suggest that Hedda and I are part of a squad that just killed a Vrock, got a reward, and is now looking to settle down. We lost our leader to the Vrock. Small town like this'd love new settlers, especially new settlers that can take a Vrock. It'll give us a reason to look around."
"Kazmuk is a dwarven researcher. He'd got secret information that there's something valuable in the ground round here. Probably a mine. We know, and are working with him to buy the land cheap. Mine'll put the place on the map, make everyone rich - especially whoever owns the land. That's our fallback 'you got us'."
"Kaede is a cat - easy enough. It'll let her look around, give us some reserves."
"Sabola - I think you're going to need to get arrested. Something enough to get into the jail, not enough that paying off a good fine doesn't get you out. Come up with a reason why we'd pay your fine. Don't wear anything too valuable, so they can't just steal your fine off you. Should give you a day in the jail."
Arodric shrugged "What do you say?"

Kazmuk nodded at Arodric.

"Your plan looks sound... see in some towns, when a man gets really drunk and starts to threaten other folks, the guards send him home if he is a resident or send him to the jail until his head stops buzzing... this could give Sabola a good reason to go to the jail, and he will probably get released tomorrow."

Kazmuk then tried to remember everything he knew about his studies about mines and the prospecting business.

Knowledge (geography): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14

Ok, so Arodric and Hedda will pose as couple and Kazmuk as a mine prospector. Got it.

Give me two areas of the five listed in the turn recap for you guys to pull this of at.

Sabola will get drunk and/or steal something to get thrown in jail for the night (hopefully?). Sabola Ok with this?

Kaede will just prowl around like a cat. Please give me one area of the five to prowl around in.

I'd meant to use kitty form to bust into the jail, but recon elsewhere works just fine, too. The most natural place is probably back to tent city, maybe among the beer garden as the hour grows later.

Action 2

Oh, by the way, guys, good news and bad news, Kaede half-purrs. Well, the bad news I guess we kind of already knew - careful not to be obvious about being involved with the Pathfinders. I've already heard rumors that there's a cabal of Society agents here to stage a jailbreak, and woe to anyone who gets in their way. The guy was deep in his cups when he said it, so no one may believe him, but if we somehow get pinned as the Pathfinder death squad, we aren't going to talk our way out of trouble whether we're wearing wayfinders or not.

Good news, though - I may have us a lead. Apparently a farmer named Otto was the first to find a body, the same day the Pathfinders showed up. Seems to have not affected him much, and that alone is making people talk. He lives outside of town a little bit; may be it's worth it to pay him a visit.

As she speaks, her outline begins to shift, and a few moments later she's back in human form, sitting on her feet and hands in front of her knees. Of course, the other question's what to do about Sabola. Anyone know how rowdy he was getting, what the chances are they'd try to keep him any longer than overnight? One night's not too bad, but I'd hate for him to be occupied any longer than that.

Tag everyone except our party drunkard.

Sabola's week off

Sabola awoke, briefly confused at his surroundings. "Right, the temple, they let me stay here last night." Sabola had wanted to be away from the barracks and the others, and nowhere else made sense as a place he would feel comfortable. So he had implored the local clergy, and given his history and willingness to work for his board, he was allowed to stay. He performed his morning deviotionals and set about making the repairs and cleaning that were his ticket to a meal and a dry bed for the day.

Breakfast was plain, but warm, just like he remembered from his youth. The discussions were the same old theological ones he remembered. Only the voices had changed, as even the furnishings seemed universal.

After the noon meal, Sabola secured some alone time with Thaedrus, one of the more senior members of the clergy. Sabola unburdened his soul to Thaedrus. He told about the recent mission, his doubts, the deaths of the crusaders, and the many infirmities he experienced on the trail. "But she carried you though all of this, did she not," queried Thaedrus.

"I suppose so, but my contributions seemed small compared to the others. The enemies are mighty and mythical, and my powers are mundane. How can I compete with that?"

Thaedrus considered the question, "have you prayed to Her and asked this question?"

Sabola sheepishly responded "no, you are the first to whom I have expressed these concerns."

Thaedrus nodded, "indeed, shall we join together in prayer?" Sabola nodded and the two knelt at the small wooden altar in Thaedrus' apartments. After 20 minutes of praying, which consisted of equal measures of formulaic dogma and situational supplication. When they finished, Sabola felt refreshed, but the light he saw in Thaedrus' gray eyes told him that the old priest had also felt something during their ministrations. "May I see your blades Sabola," Thaedrus asked. Without a word, Sabola showed his weapons to Thaedrus. "Yes, indeed, the very ones, most interesting. Would you mind if I borrowed these for a few days? I assure you that I will return them before your week here expires."

That was five days ago, and Sabola as planning on leaving the next morning, to have a day to get back into the rhythm at the barracks before his duty time started again. Thaedrus came to Sabola in the rock garden shortly into the second hour after the noon meal. Sabola had been raking the garden, an activity that comforted him greatly. "Sabola, you are leaving soon, are you not?"

"Tomorrow morning, if it pleases," Sabola responded.

"Then my timing is perfect, I place these back into your custody." Thaedrus plucked the two blades from inside his robes and presented them back to Sabola. "The mundane eye will find no change to your weapons, but..."

"The balance, the sharpness, they're exquisite," Sabola interrupted. "They are the same, but better. What happened?"

Thaedrus smiled, "Your senses serve you well, most would not be able to feel the difference. We have enchanted them, to better enable you in Her service."

Sabola looked back at Thaedrus, "they're magic now?" Sabola juggled them briefly, and balanced the one on the tip of the other. "How can I repay you?"

Thaedrus laughed, "by continuing your quest of course. She needs you, and we are just enabling your efforts. Do please stop by and see me when you are back from your next task."

Sabola teared up and thanked Thaedrus. He joined the clergy for the evening meal, and packed his goods before bed that night.

The next morning, he performed his devotional with his blades, and was more confident than ever. "Whatever challenge awaits, these blades will see me through," thought Sabola.

He shouldered his burden, and headed back to the barracks.

"You are both right, the witch could be a problem but for her to raise the bodies of the pathfinders, they need to be dead and this means we failed in our mission to free them, if they are indeed guilty... nevertheless, if they are hanged, we could give the hangman a tip of cutting their feet off... easier to fight an undead without feet to run around."

He thought for a moment before continuing.

"The farmer looks the better choice right now... and about Sabola, I might have a couple of spells that would help free him if it is the case, though I'd not be able to properly support you in the following day."

Kaede mutters to herself softly as they ride up, and there's a small flash of light from her hand. Well, then it's a good thing I don't give a rat's ass about snooping, isn't it? she calls out in response to his threats, sitting astride her loaned filly in human form.

I don't know about these guys, but I'm just making rounds to the farms in the area, performing a blessing ritual, giving what advice I can, tending to any needs for healing. If it works, the plan is to cast Guidance on him, so he gets a little magical feel-good-ness to support the idea of a ritual of blessing. Then I'll walk around the farm with him a while, use Knowledge (nature) to give some advice on his setup, maybe even talk horses since my family's into raising them and could conceivably be looking into fresh studs. If there's anyone who needs healing I'll use my wand to heal them as well. Maybe I'll get a chance to see something, maybe not, but at least I should open up a chance for the others to.

Spirits know it's hard enough to get any kind of farming going, what with the energies from the thrice-damned Worldwound mucking things up - I'm just doing what I can to help.

Otto warms up to the druid and feel at ease with her presence but that still doesn't explain the other people. After gentle prodding from his son, who still held his weapons in a tight grip, he yells out "So if you are not with her, what do you all want?"

Hedda yelled back, "Who said we're not with her? I'm part of her protection, roads aren't safe." Hedda shifted in her saddle to make sure they got a good look at her greataxe as it glinted in the sun.

It's true, Kaede adds. We met along my way, but they've proven capable. If you've any heavy work needs done, it may be they'd be able to help. Or other kinds of work as well - there's some diverse skills among us.

Action 2

A couple minutes before arriving at Otto's farm, Kazmuk cast one of his spells, doing anything he could to look just like the sheriff.

Casting disguise self, receiving a +10 in disguise to pose as the sheriff.

Action 3

"Hi, Otto, it's me... these people are with me. Let them look around so we can finally erase any doubts, right?"

'Conflicting' stories are never good.

I intend to recap tonight. Feel free to add posts until then.

Game on!

Kaede tried to feign a look of surprise. Sheriff? Well, you failed to mention that part... Yeah, failed to mention impersonation was his plan...but then again, I suppose I didn't exactly let on to much, either... She turned back to Otto. Sorry. Not from around here - otherwise I'd've let the sheriff here lead off, of course. Apparently it's something important - what could it hurt to let them have a look while we go around?

We are the super elite when it comes to investigation, apparently. XD

Well, my intention was not to conflict, since Kaede said she was coming to bless the fields, so the sheriff coming with Hedda and Arodric would be fine... the problem was that Kaede ninja-ed me in a couple of minutes... Kazmuk is not stupid to lie after Kaede's second post. Could I change his action?

Yeah, that happens to me as well at times. You have to take a look if while you think/write your post, others didn't get in and said something that you need to react to or makes you change your post.

Yes, you may change your story, which will probably make Kaede change her post, which was in reaction to your 'sheriff post'.

But that's OK, no turn recap so no foul. :)

Go ahead, Kazmuk; your lead. I'll follow along with what you post. :)

I think that is one of the big strengths of the turn recap format, actually. I've seen these sort of things come up, and people get confused about what 'actually' happened.
"Wait - Otto?" Arodric looked startled and looked at the sheriff "Is that the guy people were talking about in the bar last night? Didn't he get killed by pathfinders?"
bluff: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

Arodric: I would wait until Kazmuk posts again because it sounds like he may be retracting his idea of impersonating the sheriff.

Kazmuk, please post as soon as you are able because other people are waiting to post 'around you'.
