What can Rowan do to improve his waking up?
Go up a level. :)

Dervak |

It wouldn't help the Concentration checks.
You can currently use level+Cha, so +7-2, or +5.
If you took a 1-level dip in cleric, your Concentration check would be CL+Wis, so +1+4, or +5.
Same thing.

DM_Delmoth |

You could increase your cha next level that would get you to +9.
But you have no guarantee when that will happen and you're already more than half way through the dream quests. Which is obstinately only a third of this book.

DM_Delmoth |

I hate to say this but I'm moving next week so I'll be very intermittent with my posting until at the earliest the 2nd week in November. So it may be 2 or more days before I resolve things.

No worries, moving is a lot of work!

Kat Brewer |

Good luck! Hope you enjoy your new place.

Rowan and Theo are up, by the way.

Kat Brewer |

My wife and I were just listening to an audio version of The King in Yellow, the book from the 19th century that this campaign is referencing. Definitely curious to see how this all ties in as we find out more!

DM_Delmoth |

I probably should have read it by now. I know I've skimmed it.
Move is taking longer than I hoped, of course. But we're living out of the new place and have all the stuff that requires a truck moved. Taking a break tomorrow so I'll resolve anything lingering in gameplay then.

I haven't read The King in Yellow, but I have read The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, by H.P. Lovecraft, which obviously served as the inspiration for Book 3. It describes the Dreamlands, as well as zoogs, night-gaunts, gugs and bholes. Ghouls feature prominently, as the protagonist, Randolph Carter, is friends with them!

Kat Brewer |

I’m gonna hold off on posting my action until we see the result of Dervak’s. *fingers crossed he grabs the idol successfully*

Kat Brewer |

So the plan was to wake up as soon as we got the idol, right? Before I attempt to do so on my turn, I just want to double check to make sure.

Theophilus Carter |

My intent was to disrupt his spell and grant penalties for him against Dervak's Disarm/Steal attempt; hence, the placement, allowing Dervak to be outside of the Web. Not certain why you entered it...lol.
Rowan wakes up, then us?

Dervak |

I tried to go through it so I would not end my turn adjacent to him and give him a chance to steal it back. Also to get further away from the approaching Bokrug.
The fact that Bladed Dash specifies you can't end your move in an occupied spot implied to me that you could go through occupied spots during the move but that is not the case.
Perhaps Kat or Rowan can take the idol from Dervak and move away with it.

DM_Delmoth |

If you want to stop right in front of the web and not enter it that's fine.

Dervak |

Okay then, will do that.

Theophilus Carter |

Crap! Theo cast Feather Step on Dervak just for this actually...lol.
Apologies; I have been cramming 2e for our home group's run at Age of Ashes next month. My brain hurts...lol.

DM_Delmoth |

Feather Step wouldn't help because the problem isn't difficult terrain. It would allow Dervak to move farther and take 5ft steps in the web but he's still have to pass a check to avoid getting grappled by it.

Dervak |

@Kat, best plan might be for you take the idol and move away. You can use Snake Style against a Disarm attempt, which at +18 is pretty good (even with the -4 from the aura; do you have a Heroism active to partially counter that?). Or you could use Total Defense for +6 CMD.

The target can call upon this good luck once per round, allowing him to reroll any ability check, attack roll, saving throw, or skill check, taking the better result. He must decide to use this ability before the first roll is made. At 8th level and 16th level, the duration of this hex is extended by 1 round. Once a creature has benefited from the fortune hex, it cannot benefit from it again for 24 hours.
I don't know if the concentration check to wake up is something that the Fortune hex applies to, unless it counts as an ability check.

Dervak |

If it is an ability check, then everybody except Mara is taking a -4 from the despair aura.
But I believe concentration checks are a separate category.

DM_Delmoth |

It is it's own thing and not affected by Bokrug's aura or fortune. Which is good news because then the only way Rowan could escape the dream is by dying.

Woohoo!
Now the question is - can confused creatures voluntarily fail their saving throws vs Calm Emotions? I imagine not, but it's worth asking.

DM_Delmoth |

Hmmm I'm going to have to think about this and unfortunately I don't have a lot of time right at this moment.

What stat does Kat use for her concentration checks to wake up? Does she count as a caster?

Kat Brewer |

I checked if alchemists (and investigators by extension) have a concentration bonus listed in their stat blocks in official adventurers in their stat blocks next to “Extracts Prepared,” as casters do. It lists a caster level but no concentration check, so I would guess that means I am rolling level + cha.
Also, where are the rules on waking up from the Dreamlands? I’m having trouble finding them and I want to know how to determine how much of a bonus I get from taking damage and how I should flavor it. I’m guessing it’s a DC 25?

DM_Delmoth |

It's in the Ritual.
DREAMLANDS EXCURSION
School conjuration (creation); Level 5
Casting Time 50 minutes
Components V, S, F (a miniature staircase made of polished
horn and ivory worth 25,000 gp), SC (at least 2 and up
to 8)
Skill Checks Knowledge (arcana) DC 25, 2 successes;
Knowledge (planes) DC 25, 3 successes
Range touch
Duration instantaneous; see text
Saving Throw none; SR no
Backlash All casters take 2d6 points of damage.
Failure An animate dream (Pathfinder RPG Bestiary 2 29)
appears at the site of the ritual and attacks the casters.
At the GM’s discretion, the animate dream may have the
advanced template, be accompanied by other animate
dreams, or both.
EFFECT
This ritual must be cast at night on the Material Plane. The
casters begin chanting the incantation while they pass
around the miniature staircase, feeling each of its 70 steps.
With each passing, the staircase appears a bit heavier and a
bit larger. The primary caster drops the miniature staircase on
the ground as the incantation is completed.
Success opens a portal where the staircase lands, revealing
steps leading downward from wherever the ritual was
performed (even if performed upon a rooftop or the deck of
a ship). The casters can step forward to descend this staircase
together; doing so puts the Material Plane bodies of the casters
to sleep and thrusts their psyches into the Dreamlands. Before
the completion of the ritual, the primary caster can utter a
specific string of words that allows the portal to open in a
specific area of the Dreamlands. Otherwise, the portal opens
at the Forsaken Caravanserai. In the Dreamlands, the casters
manifest lucid bodies identical to their Material Plane bodies,
but take the ritual’s backlash damage.
Any caster wishing to wake from the Dreamlands and
return to her body on the Material Plane must succeed at a
DC 25 concentration check to do so. This is a full-round action
that doesn’t provoke attacks of opportunity. The DC of this
check is reduced by 1 for every 2d6 points of damage the
traveler willingly takes to her physical body as part of the
full-round action (this damage can’t be reduced in any way).
If successful, the caster awakens. The caster can try again
if she fails her concentration check. A caster can use her
character level + her Charisma modifier as her bonus on the
concentration check if she isn’t a spellcaster or if that value is
higher than her usual concentration bonus.

Dervak |

Ouch. What is the CR on that guy?

DM_Delmoth |

27, you had the right idea in running away as soon as you had the idol.

So Bokrug was already close enough to make a full attack? Ugh! I thought Mara might get a chance to try to wake up.

DM_Delmoth |

It was right next to you when you cast calm emotion. I suppose it could have done an AoO.

Kat Brewer |

If it was right next to her, it prob would have needed to make a will save (that it would probably succeed on all but a 1) or be unable to take any hostile action. Though it probably has high enough SR that Mara wouldn’t be able to get through :/

DM_Delmoth |

SR 38, also just straight up immune to the effect, as was the Ib Shade.

Kat Brewer |

O_o
Sooo...what happens if you get killed in the Dreamlnds?

DM_Delmoth |

You wake up but gain a lesser madness. Either random or one of my choosing. If you've already gone mad before then at my option it can be a greater madness.

My posting will be occasional for the rest of the month. I'm completing the estate sale of my parents' house, and am moving myself.

DM_Delmoth |

Finally put my couch together. Still have books and old clothes to move but the timing didn't work out and had to renew my lease. So my wife and I are taking it slow.

Kat Brewer |

Still catching up from the holidays on my pbp. I’ve got one planned that’ll come up in a bit. Sorry for the delay!
