Finn sat hiding under the merchant's wagon waiting for his chance to strike. Being a tiny halfling in a city of humans had distinct advantages. They either thought you were a child and ignored you or they knew you were a halfling and ignored you. Being ignored provided so many opportunities for the young lad. When the merchant wasn't looking, Finn popped up and quickly grabbed a pair of apples and ducked back down again.
He began to munch happily on one apple intending on saving the other for dinner. My God these things are HUGE he said to himself as he took another crunchy bite. Just as Finn set about to take another bite, the cloth skirt on the wagon parted and Finn saw the curious face of the merchant peering through. The pleasant face quickly turned purple with rage when he saw the apples in Finn's hands and he reached in to grab the boy. Finn nimbly ducked away and rolled out the other side of the wagon and jumped to his feet.
The merchant was enraged. He ran around the wagon and yelled "Stop Thief!" as he reached down to grab Finn. Finn did the most sensible thing he could think of and said "here, catch" and he gently tossed the uneaten apple to the merchant who instinctively caught the thing being thrown to him. The move caught the merchant off guard and the distraction was enough. Finn quickly turned and sprinted into the crowd with the half eaten apple still in his hand. There goes my dinner he said to himself slightly annoyed. Oh well, an apple in the hand is better than two in the bush he thought as he smiled at his cleverness. I'd best get back to the docks. The ship is about to leave and mom will be furious if they have to delay because of me. With that he took one last bite of the apple and headed for the docks.
