Paulus was born in Korvosa to a whore on the street. The whore, while not particularly wanting a child, at least had the sense of duty to deliver him to the local orphanage. Paulus spent the first eight years of his life there, and while it was not an unhappy time, and he was taken care of, he had none of the joy of a normal child with loving parents. The headmistress noticed that he had a particular attraction to religion, and so when she had time gave him a rudimentary understanding of the gods, which god ruled over which domain, their relative outlook on life, and what it meant to pray and worship. Paulus was relatively indifferent to the rest of the rules and learning, but took to the religious teachings with zeal.
Unbeknownst to Paulus, the headmistress was borrowing money from Lamm Gaedren to keep the orphanage afloat. Finally, when she could no longer pay even the usury, Lamm showed up, looking for a different sort of payment. Lamm's eyes set on Paulus soon after he arrived, and he told the headmistress he would take the boy in return for forgiving some of her debt. He told her he would 'take care of' the boy, to ease her mind. The headmistress cried, but agreed to the deal, having little choice. So began the next chapter of Paulus's childhood. Lamm enlisted Paulus as one of his 'Little Lamms'. Although Paulus' natural clumsiness made him a poor pickpocket and sneak, the other boys and girls soon learned that he made an excellent lookout and was adept at picking targets. After three years, it looked like Paulus would become just another urchin of the streets, stealing to get by, waiting to lose a hand or worse once he caught the attention of the authorities. One day, as he was casing a marketplace for likely shop targets, he saw something in the mud to the side of the street. Curious, he picked it up and wiped it off. Through the fog of memory he recalled that this symbol belonged to Sarenrae, goddess of the sun and healing. Intrigued, and not expected back for a little while, he snuck off to the church and arrived while the service was going on. Paulus felt touched by the divine, and immediately prostrated himself and declared Sarenrae his matron. When he returned to Lamm's hideout, he was called into the office. He knew the rumors, so was not caught completely unaware when Lamm closed the door and started beating him wildly with a belt. After almost all of Paulus was an ugly red splotch, Gaedren searched his pockets and found the holy symbol, breaking it apart in front of the youth with a titter and a threat to break his hands if he should do it again. Paulus was sent to one of the cramped cells that the Lamms called home, where a tall sandy-haired girl gave him what comfort she could as he cried from the pain and impotent fury he felt. With the young girl's encouragement, Paulus escaped to the temple that very night, and has since devoted himself to his worship of Sarenrae. If anyone ever came to claim him, the priests did not inform him. After a few years, as he was struggling through adolescence and his lessons at the temple, he received what could only be a guidance, perhaps a nudge from his Goddess. Approaching the temple he saw a young half-orc girl that he vaguely remembered from his time with Lamm. She looked at him uncertainly, but he felt a divine connection and approached her, then escorted her quickly into the temple. He spent the next year teaching the girl, Mercy, all he knew of the faith when he wasn't receiving his own lessons. She remains at the temple, another fixture like Paulus, but decided to take a more martial path, which drew them apart somewhat. A couple of years later, just after his sixteenth year, he came upon a half-orc male struggling to rise from a drug-induced stupor. Faded yellow-black bruising showed the man had been beaten thoroughly, and he had the shaking hands and sunken eyes Paulus had come to associate with those poor souls who turned to drugs instead of the gods. Paulus reminded himself that Sarenrae had shown him Her grace those years ago, surely She could help this wretch. He helped the man back to the temple, where the true priests swept him away to be cared for. Weeks later, with the man's health returned and his addiction kept at bay, Paulus was allowed to speak with him. Zeverin was a gruff fellow, but he seemed to be a good person and, most importantly to Paulus, Sarenrae had accepted him. After his eighteenth year, and just after his divine power started manifesting and he was made a full-fledged cleric of Sarenrae, his holy brother Rainieri brought in a half-dead man that Paulus later learned was Rainieri's father. Paulus mainly remembers that this was the first time he had actually channelled his Goddess's power into another person. The father had wounds that were surely self-inflicted, but Paulus was too kind to ask any questions of Rainieri and, due to his junior status, was mainly relegated to bearing the brunt of the verbal abuse from Nic, Rairieri's fiery-haired sister, who wanted to see her father. Ultimately the man survived, but Paulus heard the name Lamm escape the girl's lips more than once. He thought of Zeverin, and his own plight. Sarenrae was bringing these people to him...but he hadn't the courage yet to make things right. He recently turned twenty, and his thoughts have started turning back to Lamm. How many more had suffered and not escaped? He had heard that some boys and girls got more than a beating. He wondered about the other children, especially the brave young sandy-haired girl. After Lamm's most recent arrest (and subsequent release), Paulus has started praying to Sarenrae about the situation, asking her for guidance on how to stop Lamm, for he could not allow these atrocities to continue...(it has been 9 years since he exited Lamm's service) Personality:
Paulus believes in mercy first (usually), and tries to see the good in all things. Paulus always try to look at things from multiple angles, and rarely acts rashly. He believes Sarenrae saved him from a life of crime or even death, and worships her wholeheartedly, he would rather face death than renounce her. Appearance:
Paulus is a handsome man with light blond hair and brilliant emerald green eyes. He is of average height, but well-muscled. 2/2 Harrow Points |
