bluedove
I understand. Very sorry for your loss and I hope you find something to bring you happiness soon.
bluedove
The question does remain of what we should do now. Do you guys want to recruit more PC's and keep going? If so, how many should we take in? I'm open to whatever. You can invite some people in or I can open a recruitment thread. Let me know your thoughts.
René Treize
Sorry for the delay. I do not have any strong opinions, so let's go with Cordwin and Tylur and recruit 2.
bluedove
Apologies, I am just a bit busier than normal with the gameday impending and school having started this week.
Any thoughts on what you want in new recruits. Healing is an obvious need, but I was thinking a trap-monkey would also benefit this group.
There are a number of people signed up on the sticky thread for AP applicants. Here is the spreadsheet. Maybe have a look and see if anyone jumps out at you.
Tylur Thorn
No worries I like your suggestions on classes to look for. Here are the ones whose backgrounds I liked:
Kaytlin Quiane Human Investigator
Liliana Tesseran Human priestess of Calistra
René Treize
Character-wise, any of those three seem fine. Although it looks a little like Kaytlin's player might not currently be active, and Liliana might currently be playing in this game. So...kind of wondering how up to date that spreadsheet actually is. I'm really not especially picky though.
bluedove
Ah darn... looks like you're right. I guess it's going to have to be a fresh recruitment post after all. Ok, I'll get on that.
bluedove
Ok, post is up. You can find it here if you would like to weigh in.
bluedove
Folks are lining up for the jobs! Take some time and look through the thread and let me know who you like. Feel free to discuss by PM if you don't want to talk openly.
Would you like to nominate by votes or just give your input and let me make the final pick? Either is fine by me.
Tylur Thorn
I'd say we create a short list of our top two picks and then bluedove you can choose which two works best for you. If people want to keep it private send it to bluedove in a a PM or just list it on the board.
René Treize
I've compiled a list of submissions thus far for easier evaluation.
Trappers
- Skerrin Maltisse, Elf Magus (Bladebound/Hexcrafter)
- Olaff Olaffson, Human Ranger
- Vlad Mirwood, Dhampir Inquisitor(kin-slayer)
- Durbin, Half-orc Slayer
- Fizgrubber Goblin/"Gnome?" UC Rogue (Not 100% sure if this is a serious submission since it's a goblin with no ranks in disguise, but I thought I'd list it anyway)
Healers
- Minah, Human Druid (lion shaman) (I assume this is meant to be a healer since I see no trap stuff)
- Aurora Warin, ?? Oracle (maybe human? Also seems to be missing fluff currently)
- Liam, Ifrit Paladin (hospitaler, tempered champion)
- Isabella Monstrance, Aasimar Cleric (Merciful Healer)
Both
- Raok, Grippli Inquisitor (Sanctified Slayer)
Note: This is only the character submissions I saw; I didn't keep track of people who had dotted but didn't have a character yet.
René Treize
Oops, looks like I missed Nirra, Halfling Oracle. Although a different person posted a candidate list a few minutes after me, and a few candidates then added more fluff right after that post.
bluedove
I'd like us to make a final decision pretty soon. I have René's picks, although now that more folks have gotten their backgrounds completed, it may warrant revisiting.
Do you guys want to institute the Background Skills system? Inquiring minds want to know! See the link for more details, but essentially, you get 2 extra skill points per level which must be spent on what are classified as Background Skills.
Background Skills:
Appraise
Artistry
Craft
Handle Animal
Knowledge (engineering)
Knowledge (geography)
Knowledge (history)
Knowledge (nobility)
Linguistics
Lore
Perform
Profession
Sleight of Hand
René Treize
I am generally more for background skills than against (it would basically give me back the fluff skill point I put in Profession (fortune telling) ). My main issue with it is that not all the skills are really equal in my mind for all classes. Like Perform is pretty important for bards, who get to use it to replace other skill checks, and Craft (Alchemy) is pretty important for alchemists. But I would say that is not enough to outweigh my enjoyment of getting free skill points for fluff, so my vote would be yes.
I'll look over the updated submissions and PM an update probably tonight.
Tylur Thorn
I have yet to use it and while interested it looks like more paperwork. However Cordwin and René seem alright with it so I won't oppose it if you would like to institute it Bluedove.
I will look at the list again and PM you my two candidates.
bluedove
Alright, announcement is made! To our new recruits: The party is currently interviewing townspeople about the fire that claimed their chapel 5 years ago. The next likely places for them to go will be to the local healer and then eventually back to the Rusty Dragon (Inn and Tavern).
How familiar are you both with the AP's storyline (without spoilers, please)? We are honestly just a few days into the campaign, but there is still a bit to be caught up on, especially if you are long-time residents of Sandpoint. So give me an idea of how long you both have been in the area.
Olaff Olaffson
Hi guys, thank you for picking Olaff! I'm really looking forward at this game, it sounds really fun!
Regarding my experience with RotR, I've only started it once before and it only lasted through the first assault of the goblins so yeah... almost no experience. So apart from what the name of the AP indicates (about all that the word 'runelords' point to), I have no knowledge about the plot.
Olaff isn't native of Sandpoint, but is instead arriving in a boat to bury his mother (a Varisian) here so he can arrive at any point. I think it would make more sense if he arrives after the mentioned assault though... any thoughts?
Aurora Warin
Woo! I am excited. Her profile is empty because I needed sleep and I am up really early! I will get her profile filled in but I wanted to post and say thank you for picking me. Also this seems to be a bit of a boys club. Do you all want me to swap to a male? I could do that or just be the only lady among us. Either works for me!
And I apologize for the text wall that is coming.
As to my familiarity with RotRL this was the first game I ever started. We only made it to I think book two or three but I was busy learning the system and being all ackward and quiet, I was still very shy at that point. I have no idea what was cannon or not because the GM was a brutal one and liked add custom stuff to the game. We were told that we frequently missed the plot and moved off on our own. Which might be why their was so much custom stuff. I do know I died at that GMs dice rolls three times! But I can assure you that I am perfectly capable of not using anything I remember to my advantage, half of it might not happen anyways.
I picked the Deverin Family to be related too and I have Aurora coming to town to find people, who wont steal from her, to travel with as she tries and get her merchant business going. The Inn is a classic option for meeting new people. Not really knowing the area, except by word of mouth, Aurora is likely to head to see her cousin the mayor. Then hit up the inn.
Also should I swap the last name it Deverin? It kind of makes sense too.
Cordwin Ironbeard
Welcome Aurora! I think keeping her female is fine. As far as the last name, I think either one works. Maybe you are using a different last name so people don't accuse you of favoritism?
I think we have a great group and I am really excited!
Aurora Warin
I am very excited to play! I love this game and I really like PbP. My live group moves about as fast as some PbPs. As to the name that is actually a fair point though she is not ashamed of her family so I am not sure. I have a busy day starting in about 10 minuets but I will think on it some.
Everything but her stats are now on the profile. I have to check over that part and I will post it later this evening after I get back to my precious computer.
Bluedove do you want me to PM you and go over what I remember? Cause I can. I am rather proud of one thing that I did and I like to babble about it, even though the group told me I was being ridiculous and should listen to the more experienced players. Or simply forget the little that I do remember.
René Treize
Welcome new folk!
@Aurora, I agree that keeping your character female is fine.
@Olaff: A couple of things just in response to your character's response to René.
1) You would probably not know that René is a witch. He has yet to cast any spells in the game (although admittedly, I also came in after the initial goblin battle), preferring to rely on hexes, which give no sign of being used. He plays down both his magic and his intelligence a lot, partially to have other people underestimate him and partially because he finds it amusing. If your mom knew his very mom well, you'd probably know that René's mom had some innate magic and therefore René might have inherited it, but you wouldn't know for sure. Also, his familiar Hadley has yet to do anything uncannily smart. He mostly just chills under René's hat and eats food thus far.
2) In regards to if we're related, technically René isn't ethnically Varisian. He was going to be until I modified him for this campaign and decided Family Ties was the most fitting trait, which makes him adopted into Varisian culture. Our moms still could have known each other and been like sisters if you want. Although René's mom didn't talk to him much about people she knew/was related to, and what she did say tended to change a lot/be heavily dramatized and embellished rather than factual.
bluedove
I had some connectivity issues earlier, so a quicker post than I'd like. Glad to see you both made it to discussion!
Aurora, I see no need for you to change the last name. Sounds like you would be the mayor's niece or cousin, perhaps, so a different surname would be understandable. As you prefer!
I would be good with you PM'ing me the plot details you do remember. But I'll send you the details of where my own group that I play with is at so you don't spoil it for me either. =)
We'll get moving off our bump in the road tomorrow, everyone! I'm looking forward to it!
Aurora Warin
OK she has her profile filled out and I should be ready to go.
Aurora Warin
Oh I am so sorry. I did not realize the game was going! I will jump right in.
Olaff Olaffson
Holding on to see if anyone will interfere or to know the dogs' reaction, otherwise poor Olaff will tackle the 'volf' to save the 'stupid but brrave man' he was brawling against. Not his wisest moment but truly drunk man rarely are really smart/perceptive.
Aurora Warin
I did yell at you.
bluedove
Yeah, it's probably a good idea to see what the other two will do first. This doesn't need to become a combat, but it certainly could!
About Sabina's Letter: I don't want to take too many liberties with her character just to segue her out, but I can write up the contents of the letter, if you like. Or if one of you would like to write it yourself, that would be fine too. Basically, she failed to find the answers here she hoped for and has a bad feeling or maybe received a communication that she is needed at home.
Olaff Olaffson
I did yell at you.
You actually did but I thought it would be really out of character to just say "Yeah, why not." lol. Olaff is really drunk at this point, seeing doubles and actually thinking the man he was brawling is being attacked by wolves... he is seeing no dogs and he'd not sleep and leave the man to his certain death (at least in his mind).
As a player, I really do not wish this to end in battle and Olaff should be able to be brought down by a single good punch (being abysmally drunk) or even a well thrown pebble, so I only see this going to combat if the remaining players want (possibly fun) or if it is Bluedove's desire... otherwise, just a strong bark from one of the dogs surrounding him might be enough as well!
Aurora Warin
Oh I did not assume Olaff would listen but Aurora would try. She is not a strong person and she knows it. Three really big dogs and two large drunk men would just end badly for her. Apparently paizo ignored part of my post or I simply forgot to type it, not sure. I was very groggy earlier. Three day weekend and I get no sleep!
Olaff Olaffson
Since Tylor pointed it out (not sure if just In Character or if also OOC), do you think Olaff's accent is too difficult to understand?
IMO, even if it is more difficult to understand it is also thematic, since someone not used to speak Taldan as his first tongue would have an accent at least... either way, let me know if you wish for me to tone it down!
Aurora Warin
I have no use with it. I have friends who love to play with languages and accents can get weird. If I ever get confused then it is just more role play opportunities. Not to mention teaching me to talk like a proper person ;)
René Treize
I don't think the accent is hard to understand. It's pretty consistent, so it's easy to figure out what's going on.
bluedove
I enjoy the accents as well, and it looks like you guys are doing a fine job at introductory RP. I have an early appointment tomorrow, so I'm turning in much earlier than normal. Will give you all an update tomorrow.
There is a map of Sandpoint on the first slide of the link at the top of the campaign, and you can find the key on the Campaign Info tab.
Tylur, would you like a full written out letter from Sabina to react to?
Tylur Thorn
No that won't be necessary. Just a word from Cordwin will do fine I can take it from there. Sabina saved Tylur as you read so he feels indebted to her and plus he was developing feelinga so her immediate absence is worrying him right now.
bluedove
Just a reminder, Hannah can't reply until someone actually addresses her. She's not psychic... or fey, for that matter. =P
Olaff Olaffson
Yeah... but I don't think anyone would like for Olaff to do the talking... he could though (I'm actually tempted)! lol
Aurora Warin
Olaff that was hilarious! I had to stop laughing before I could write Aurora's indignation. She might be a little defensive about how tiny she is.
Olaff Olaffson

Thanks! I'm really trying to give everyone a completely wrong view of Olaff, I'm already imagining the amount of 'sorrys' that he'll need to give on the next day...
Aurora Warin
That part should be entertaining. He is the funny kind of drunk.
Aurora Warin
I received funny looks for cackling at work just so you know. Also Aurora would need a chair to stand on in that situation I think
Olaff Olaffson
Not problem at all, GM!
Lets assume that Olaff has only overheard about the fire and was babbling about evil fey!
