DM Morvius's Into the Void (Inactive)

Game Master Tourach

Survival Horror in the Void RPG Setting

Glad we have interest!

This is the official recruitment for my Void RPG game. For those that were not in the interest check thread, the quick start rules (by Wildfire) can be gotten for free and the Core Rules are a pay-what-you-want PDF. In addition it may be desirable for players to have a copy of the the Characters Unbound player's guide, but it is not necessary.

Character Creation:

You can make your characters through any of the three sanctioned methods presented - either the Specialties or Freeform Design presented in the Core Rules or the Lifepath system in Characters Unbound. Please just make note of points spent and a tally in your character sheet (I'll want an alias once the game starts and while I encourage it for recruitment, it is not necessary).

Talents from Characters Unbound are completely acceptable. We won't be using the Empathy or Aptitude rules presented there (so that no one is required to buy that book if they don't want to).

What I'm looking for:

I am looking to make a group of approximately 5 PCs. I have 1-2 people already accounted for, so I'm looking for 3-4 more. 5 total isn't a hard cap, but that's my target.

Posting should be the standard once per day. I often post more than that, but one a day is a good guideline. I am looking for people that are interested in the investigative and horror elements of the Void, so expect combat to be present, but likely sudden and terrifying, rather than the primary focus of the game. The game is likely to be far, far darker than your average Pathfinder and while it will adhere to the rules of this board, terrifying creatures and extremely unpleasant choices/situations are going to come up often.

Oh, and all PCs should be Wardens. How you get there is up to you.

And I might use the Achievement system presented in Characters Unbound.

Where the game will go:

I'm going to start with running Stygian Cycle I which takes place in the Martian Outback. That said, do not feel the need to be from Mars or ever there at the moment. The beginning of the adventure will get you to the Warden station on Mars. After the first adventure we'll see how things are going - I will likely weave in the other Stygian Cycle books, but am also likely to toss in some missions of my own in between.

Again, this game is going to be one in which combat matters, but preparation and investigation (both physical and social) skills matter even more. Getting into combats that you should have avoided will likely end up with dead Wardens. But fights will happen and sometimes unexpectedly, so the group will need to be able to defend itself.

Start your engines, get ready to investigate, and as always, ask any questions you might have.

Edit:

Missing critical information! Since I already have interest from my interest thread, I'm going to try to close recruitment on Friday, October 3. I'm not setting a specific time until I see if there turns out to be tons more interest, but that's a good guideline.

as I said in the interest thread, dotting and grabbing the characters unbound book. Soon as it finishes installing, i'll start making my character.

I am very tired right now, but I am working on my pilot. Basically someone who thrives out in the black.

Okay, backstory wise, I have 3 different characters i'm working on:

Calis Isus, a middle aged man who was recruited into the wardens out of high school from hyperion after he killed his abusive father. His father had joined a cult that worshipped the old ones, and in an attempt to gain further power walked from room to room, killing his wife and 2 of 3 children. Calis managed to disarm him and fatally stab him after a prolonged struggle. calis is a master of bladed weapons and stealth, and disdains the use of guns.

Quinton "Quint" Butler, a former cop from earth who was thrown off of the Chicago police department after continuing to investigate a string of horrible murders after being ordered to stand down. He was recruited into the wardens after tracking a mi-go into an abandoned warehouse where a cult had sprung up around it, and going toe-to-toe with the thing.

Jimmy smith is an inarguable genius. After graduating from college at the age of 12 with a half-dozen doctorates, he was recruited by the wardens to do experimental research on weapons for field agents. After a decade doing research, he has decided to go out into the field and try something far more challenging. recently, he has come to the conclusion that the best chance for the survival of humanity is to come to peace with the force behind the Cthonian Star. An orphan, Jimmy has never even wondered about his real family, having grown to see the wardens and all of humanity as his actual family.

I'm building all three (cause i'm having a good time doing so) but i'll leave it up to the group as to which one I submit.

This is GenThunderfist's submission.

I need to work on my fluff, but Kit is reporting in. I also need to get my equipment.

so any thought as to which character people would find useful/like to see?

I was aiming for a Kuiper belt-born Researcher. He's lived his whole life out in the Black, enough so that he's started to notice...
Things.

Kevin is a Kuiper Belt drifter, so if you want to work on a shared back story, let me know.

Interestingly enough, Hoss is a Terran born Drifter. He's bounced around the system looking for work and would leave once he lost interest in the goings on of the area.

Okay, so we have submitted:
* K-Gen (Enforcer Military/Pilot)
* Hoss Delgado (Enforcer/Checkered Past/Social Butterfly)
* Kevin Ichi Takenachi (Enforcer?)

Coming Soon To A Planet Near You:
* Calis Isus (Enforcer?)
* Quinton "Quint" Butler (Enforcer? Ex-Cop)
* Jimmy Smith (Reseacher?)
* Unnamed Kuiper Belt Researcher

We seem to be heavy on Enforcers, and no Investigators yet. Maybe I'll make one...

I have one of each archetype. Calis is an enforcer, Quinton is an investigator, and Jimmy is a researcher.

A couple of things that have come up:

Starting Gear

Since the book doesn't really cover it (what does Impact do at chargen for example?) I'm going to use the following:

You are permitted as many UNRESTRICTED items as you feel like (within reason) at your Personal Wealth or lower. You can have up to 1 item at your Personal Wealth or lower that is Licensed - the assumption is that you have gotten the appropriate license. You can have up to 10 Licensed items at your Sponsored Wealth (1) within reason. And finally you can have up to 1 Restricted item at your Sponsored Wealth - again the assumption is that it was obtained appropriately.

Fearless

Since this has a call out to the GM specifically I'll make clear my specific policy. I am okay with that Quality. I am okay with multiple people with that Quality. I am, however, unlikely to take an entire group of people with the Fearless Quality. The game is very focused on survival horror, so having the horror aspect be relevant is an important feature of the game.

I never planned to take fearless, but good to know =)

I forgot to mention, I a pilot with a checkered past from the Kuiper Belt. I have been trained as an enforcer because I seem to draw the forces of darkness to me like a magnet. Fortunately, I seem to sense them as well. I am something of a cowboy type who is willing to do what ever is necessary to survive.

sounds like with what we have, I and going to either play Quinton or Jimmy. I'm leaning towards Quinton, but i'll make whatever we need to fill in the void that we don't have.

If you are still debating what to submit, it looks like the submissions so far have lots of combat with no investigation, no real conversational skills, no engineering, and no medic - there is also a hole in "stealth" but I'm not sure that's a role in and of itself. So there's a lot of places to go and still not overlap with any of the existing applications.

Hoss has all the conversational skills he'll ever need.

sounds like Quinton it is. Soon as I get a break, I'll get him posted.

A thought just occurred to me. How do once per session abilities, such as luck, work in pbp?

This is going to be kind of me winging it, but roughly once per "act" or so. Not a scene (like a combat, etc.) but not an entire mission either. It will be pretty fluid, but I'll probably count it by whenever I'm awarding Advances since that is also a timer that is relevant.

If it comes up that people think they really think that game has moved far enough that it should be the end of an act even if I didn't award Advances, people are welcome to speak up. But that's my thinking.

Oh, and as we are nearing the end of the recruitment period, please double check your sheets. I think a couple of entries need to update gear with the starting gear guidelines.

I think the only expressed interest here that hasn't translated to a submission is Irnk and a researcher wouldn't be a bad submission, so if you are still interested, feel free to submit something.

Updated my gear, now I have some fight to me!

I'll present myself if recruitment is still open.

I generated a Researcher since that is what seems to be needed most. Profile is all set up and ready to go, unfortunately the backstory seems to be rather lengthy for the point it gets across. I'll give a tl;dr version for simplicities sake (and I don't want to delete it after going through all of the effort of writing it down):

Hazardous duties engineer who is working to make ends meet for his small family on Mars.

Haven't worked out the backstory yet, but the main inspiration for personality will be Kaylee from Firefly. The crunch for the character complete, minus a few more quirks to be added as the backstory is worked on.

The two of us that DM Morvius mentioned waited until yesterday to finalize our characters. We figured we'd fill whatever holes the group may have. Turns out that's mostly impossible, but we've got a pair of characters that should contribute pretty well. There was a whole lot of combat and not a whole lot of social or research skills. Neither of us cover an occult researcher, but I think we'll survive.

This is mine, and Kaylee (who just posted) is the other.

ya, it seems like the only skill that we don't have is occult.

I have a little occult and cryptozoology, no to mention that one of my quirks is a type of folklore.

I need to leave for a family thing soon. I might be to slagged to post after I get back.

I also have occult and cryptozoology, although admittedly Hoss isn't much one for reasearching beasties.

I'm pleasantly surprised by all of the interest but it is time to make those tough decisions that must always be made.

In addition to Kaylee and Phineus (who were already spoken for), can the following characters please report to the OOC thread:

Hoss Delgado
Quinton Butler
Kevin Ichi Takenachi

Thank you to everyone for the interest and the submissions.

Along with DM Morvius, I'd also like to thank everyone for their interest. To those that made it, welcome to the game!

Congratulations to those who were selected.

getting a alias created and will post in the gameplay thread forthwith.
