Welcome to the Scales of War.
Please check-in here and take the chance to get to know each other. Also please familiarise yourselves with the Campaign Info tab, make sure your stat blocks are all polished off and finish purchasing all of your starting equipment.
If you have any final questions for me before we get started go ahead and ask. I'll have limited internet access over the next couple of days but should be able to get back to you over the weekend.
The first in-game post will be up on Monday 11 December.
Combat maps for this campaign will be handled on Roll20. I have just upgraded my membership so that you should be able to access them via desktop, mobile or tablet. The link to join is here.
With such a large party, the following mechanics will hopefully keep things moving quickly and help avoid confusion.
1: When in combat, I'll be posting the saves and AC for enemies. When you attack/use an ability that calls for a save, you'll be able to determine if you hit, and you will roll for the creature's save. This will help you describe your actions and their results, and move combat along faster, so please do so.
2: Initiative will be handled by averaging the dice rolls of all combatants on one side together. When it's the party's turn, people will act in order of posting. People inactive for 24 hours will be botted by me.
3: If you know you're going to be inactive for an extended period of time, please post in the discussion thread so I'll know and can be ready to bot you.
4: If the party needs to make a minor decision, rather than waiting for everyone to weigh in, I will consider the decision made as soon as a majority of players favour one outcome. Decisions that have a major impact on the story will still require everyone's input.
5: If you see a spoiler in a post that's not addressed to you, or that you didn't make the DC for, please don't look, even if you feel like you can separate your knowledge from your character's knowledge.
Jathal Mitheralia |
Thanks for the selection, looks to be a great group.
Kra'el Blackscale |
I'm ready!
I'm looking to make connections. I plan on reading through everyone's backstory again tonight. Any connection to Bahamut is probably the easiest.
Aelion Kinandev |
Woohoo! Excited to be playing with so many awesome people! Thanks for the selection, DM Kaavek!
(I just saw your PM, and I'll answer it now.)
ETA: Jathal, how do you feel about a background connection with Aelion? They could be friends, acquaintances, or even friendly rivals in their hunts. Kaavek mentioned that Jathal might have helped Aelion complete his mission after Bryn's death - does that work for you?

It works for me, it gives us a good reason to be in Brindol at the start of the campaign.
Background wise Jathal went against her family tradition by not becoming arcane caster. She responded to the disapproval this got her, and pressure to conform by drifting away and becoming strongly independent in her outlook.
Jathal is pretty apathetic politically, much preferring to be out hunting down the threats to the vale. Having read through your background this makes her uncaring to Aelion's activism. Which means they probably had some interesting conversations as they made for Brindol.
She does like meeting people of other races, so enjoys hitting the cities and wandering around seeing all the sights and races mingling.
Jathal Mitheralia |
I do wish you could add your own avatar image, nothing in the Elf or Half-elf selection really was what I wanted.

You could try looking at fey.
Javos Kincade |
Hello everybody! Glad to be in for the insanity. So on to how to build connections and such:
As a human raised by dwarves and worships both Moradin and Bahamut I'm easy to acomodate to various ideas. So if you have any ideas lemme know!

Heh, that'd be great! I'd also be happy with Paizo just uploading more icon options, though.

Hahaha, Jathal's apolitical views probably drove Aelion up the wall! On the way to Brindol he would have been unusually subdued, however, because of Bryn. Their view of what absolutely doesn't belong in their forests (and what to do about it) aligns well, though, and Aelion is a pretty zen guy (;D), so he'd probably consider Jathal a friend, if she's willing to be one. He'd definitely be in her corner about bucking the family tradition to choose her own path. What do traditions know.

Yeah, somehow "jungle elf" doesn't seem to be a thing in the avatars. I see we both had to pick blondes despite our descriptions, haha. I think I'll look for something I can link on his profile.

I remember thinking about how to connect with your character when I first saw your submission.
You've (at least) come across Kra'el and Sularys arguing vehemently about the tenets of the worship of Bahamut. Blackscale seems very single-minded about his interpretation of the dogma. Sularys tells him that he's missing the whole point by ignoring major aspects of it.
He's very focused on preparing people to fight their own battles, probably taking it too far in some situations.
Also, Kra'el doesn't get along with the other dragonborn in town, and Sularys is no exception. The community kind of considers him bad luck and he doesn't do anything to dissuade them.
I'm not sure how your character would interact with that directly. Any thoughts?
Edit: Also, in general, our connections don't necessarily have to be friendly ones. Heh.
Ingra Stormstone |
I am so happy I get to play Ingra I almost cried!
So many characters I never get to play them XD
Also, hearing you on the avatar front. I linked an image in my profile of what she feels like, since I couldn't find one that looks like her.
Regretting cancelling my Photoshop subscription lol.
I was under the impression we were already in Brindol, but if any of you are from Hammerfist Hold direction, might have at least joined the same caravan when traveling here.
Graaagh! I'm so pumped!
Jathal Mitheralia |
I generally use Pintrest for images, like you I linked the image that was closest to my feel of Jathal in my profile.
Going with this one now, closest to what I think is Jathal's deadpan, not impressed face. :)

I think it'll work better if you directly link the image. Like so.
Cecilia Hawthorne |
So we're really going to do this with 9 players, huh? Should be interesting! :P
In terms of connections, it's possible that Cecilia knows Dayana if she's currently working at a bar, seeing as she's performed at more than a few taverns over the last few months. She probably wouldn't be big on the whole Changeling/Witch thing, but maybe she doesn't know about that yet.
Anyway, looking forward to this. :)
Dayana Elerye |

To anyone who's familiar with the traits exhibited by Changelings, Dayana's a fairly obviously one; she has the frighteningly pale skin, the heterochromia, the dark hair, and the tendency to creepily stare at people for far longer than is necessary. She's somewhat more subtle with the witchcraft part; after all, it's bad for business to have the barmaid trotting around with a viper prominently curled around her arm, whispering arcane secrets in her ear ;)
Beledia instead gets to take nice, long, and very cozy naps in Dayana's bag while she's working. Spoiled snake.
But yes, since Dayana's been working as a barmaid at Ilya's Cardhouse for the last few months, anyone who frequents there is more than welcome to have met and know her if they want to. She doesn't bite, honest.
Kra'el Blackscale |
I messaged a few people about developing possible connections with Kra'el. My hope is to get to everyone, but eight people is a lot so I'll have to do the rest tomorrow.
I felt like trying to talk about background connections with 8 different characters in the discussion forum could really clutter things up here.
I'm hoping to establish Kra'el as the apparent(not necessarily actual) leader of the party, in the sense that when we meet our foes, he's front and center, drawing as much of their attention as possible. And if someone decides to assassinate our 'leader' to cripple our plans, well.. good luck with that. I think it's not a bad idea to let him think he's in charge if you guys want. But I'm not too worried about it, either way. Kra'el will play whatever part he needs to play in the coming trials.
On a related note, Kra'el's morals and drive will play a big part in his contribution to our decision-making, but he's not stupid. He understands the value of diplomacy, even among allies and would much prefer that they're on the same page than pushing them to enact a plan they don't agree with.
Jathal Mitheralia |
Looking at the party balance, it's an interesting one. I've never actually played in such a large group in over 25 years of role playing.
We have ranged and melee covered. Skills, social, knowledge and sneaky are also well catered for. Arcane is nicely handled. Really only the divine side is a little light, and there are four characters who can use magical healing so I don't see any real problems in that area.
Kra'el Blackscale - Dragonborn - Paladin
Aelion Kinandev - Elf - Unchained Monk (Zen Archer)
Javos Kincade - Human - Cavalier (Brother in arms)
Zalinda Freston - Human - Unchained Rogue (Sharper)
Jathal Mitheralia - Elf - Slayer
Cecilia Hawthorne - Human - Bard (Soundstriker)
Ingra Stormstone -Dwarf - Warpriest (Forgepriest)
Dayana Elerye - Changeling - Witch
Dinvirte Babriote - Tiefling - Arcanist
Obviously a party this size will need an equally big challenge. :)

Javos grew up in a Dwarf hold so we could just say it was Hammerfist Hold and they could travel together that way. For the sake of ease and all.
Dinvirte Babriote |
Oh boy, fast group!
I saw the announcement before I went to bed and decided I'd check in when I got up. I was not expecting so many posts but I guess that's bound to happen with 9!
I need to read through a few more PCs but, anyone that has spent some time at Ilya's they would probably be familiar with the Din. He's the Tiefling talking to anyone who will listen about the weird things that make no sense in the world so they must be some conspiracy.
Zalindra Freston |
Anyone that has spent some time at Ilya's would probably be familiar with the Din.
Zalindra is in a weekly card game at Ilya's, so she would know you.

Zalindra is in a weekly game there, so she would likely have met you. She's very friendly, so she probably would have asked you tons of questions.
____
Kra'el and I have already established a connection since we both grew up in Brindol... if anyone else would have met me, or *wants* to know me, Zalindra also travels often to nearby towns and archaeological digs, and might know anyone from another town nearby (she's very friendly) or who is into history or the buying or selling of war memorabilia or historical artifacts of any kind.
DM Kaavek |
Glad to see everyone's checked in!
I'm not sure if Zalindra and Cecilia have realised yet but Cecilia has been doing a lot of work with Zalindra's grandfather trying to uncover her father's past. They would definitely have met at the Hall of Great Valor and may even have been to a few archeological sites together.
I also wanted to let you know that the treasure system these modules use relies on players providing the GM with a wishlist of the kind of things they want their characters to find, so feel free to message me with any requests for anything you think you might like.
Aelion Kinandev |
Just to let you guys know: Monday I'll be AFK most of the day.

Fair enough. So maybe they know each other, but not friends or anything.

Somehow I completely missed that. It's funny how similar our characters' backgrounds are, looking at them now. So yeah, Cecilia and Zalindra should probably at least be acquaintances. ;)

That reminds me... Zalindra wouldn't care a whit about her being a changeling. She'd still try to get to know you.

Sounds good. If you want something more complex, just let me know.
Jathal Mitheralia |
I think Jathal and Aelion would be the outsiders here, they know each other slightly, but are not from Brindol, and haven't spent much time there in the past.
Ingra Stormstone |
Ingra literally just arrived in Brindol after spending her whole life in Hammerfist Hold.
She knows maybe Javos, maybe.
Other than that she's just trying to get others to help her get to wherever she's going lol
Kra'el Blackscale |
My god, I just got home from work and I'm already way behind. XD
I got some reading to do!
Edit: Oh great. Overlook. Kra'el's gonna love this idea...
Kra'el Blackscale |
Should I drive the companions to journey there, or do you have some plans, GM?
Javos Kincade |
Taking bets on how long before Ingra tries to beat me to death with a table.
Jathal Mitheralia |
Trust a Bard to be fashionably late. :)
Ingra Stormstone |
lol ikr?
A mate was talking to me in FB and kept interrupting my typing (was on my phone) so it took me forever to finish it XD
Kra'el Blackscale |
This is a very large group of players. I'll be really impressed if we can manage efficient combat. Let's do it!

I would like to formally double-dog dare all y'all to impress Kra'el with our efficient combat skills :P

It's ok, Jathal. I'm probably going to fan these things to death myself to be honest with you. My init roll was too good.

Well, if you do that I'll make sure all the booze on the table doesn't go to waste. :)
