So it turns out there's an Archetype for the avatar style bender martial artist Kineticist, but I do not have anywhere near the proper stats for it. Ah well I'm enjoying this as it is, I'll try it another time.
DM Jesse Heinig
The skeleton was an intelligent skeleton with two levels of samurai (ronin order). It actually got bonuses from issuing a challenge against Hiro specifically in response to his challenge! If it had manged to score a hit with the wakizashi, it would probably have taken quite a chunk out of him (when using Power Attack and with a challenge issued against Hiro, 1d6+9 damage!).
DM Jesse Heinig
Sorry for the slow posts this weekend. I got really sick on Friday and I still haven't shaken it. :/
Hiro Takemashi
Don't do it! They're a pain to post from. Don't conform!
Hope you're feeling better!
EDIT: Posted from my iPhone. ;)
DM Jesse Heinig
Welcome back folks. :)
You've earned enough experience points to reach level 2, and once you go back to town and have a night's rest you will advance in character level. Feel free to update your sheets, AND I'm going to introduce a couple of updates to the campaign that will all be good for you:
* First, I'm going to add the use of Background Skills. What this means for you is, at each level you get 2 bonus skill points that you can only use on skills that are flagged as Background Skills. This means you'll have some leeway to take skills that are not as useful for adventuring, but help to flesh out your character.
The following skills are Background Skills: Appraise, Artistry (this covers all forms of "creating art"), Craft, Handle Animal, Knowledge (engineering), Knowledge (geography), Knowledge (history), Knowledge (nobility), Linguistics, Lore (this is for narrow categories of speciality knowledge like "elven wines" or "famous wizards"), Perform, Profession, Sleight of Hand. If you already have ranks in a Background Skill, you don't have to change anything, but you could choose instead to use your Background Skill ranks there and free up your class skill ranks to do something else.
Example: Hiro has 1 rank in Knowledge (nobility). Since this is considered a Background Skill, he can just leave that rank there, or he can decide to spend one of his two Background Skill ranks for that, thereby freeing up the rank that he used on Knowledge (nobility) to spend on some other adventuring skill.
As a samurai, Hiro still has 4 skill ranks per level, +human bonus, +Intelligence bonus, but now he gets 2 extra ranks only for Background Skills.
You guys can move around your skill picks to accommodate the fact that you now have these extra Background Skill ranks.
Among other things, I strongly recommend that Jinda take Appraise as a Background Skill; combined with his dwarf bonus with stone/metal, this will help him to evaluate gems and metal objects of value that you guys find (so you don't get ripped off when selling treasure!).
* Second, since it's so heavily considered the "core" way to play Pathfinder (as established by the PFS), I'm going to move you guys up to 20-point build instead of the 15 that we were working with. Yay, your stats get better!
* Third, because of these updates, feel free to rework your stats, skills, and archetype choices as you update to level 2. Kenji, if you want to take the Elemental Ascetic archetype and move around your point-buy on your stats to have a better Wisdom score, now's the time to do so!
While you're updating sheets we'll do some RP in the Rusty Dragon to celebrate your triumphs and set up the next portion of the adventure.
Kaijitsu Kenji
All I can say with this update is WHOOOHOOO! :D :D :D
... I just wish Elemental Aesthetic didn't suck worse than the core class. :/ Ah well, suffer for your art and all that. :p
How did you want us to do HP again?

PFS standard: You get the average from your hit die. Since kineticist is a d8, that's 5 hit points + Constitution bonus (if any) + favored class bonus (if chosen for hit points).
Don't worry about the Elemental Ascetic being "bad." Lots of your upcoming choices are going to come down to role-playing, as act two of this part of the adventure is all caravan travel and I am hoping to make that rely more on your interactions with people on the caravan and solving the various problems that crop up on the road (as long as that's fun, anyway). Heck, I play a Magus (Eldritch Scion) in another game, and everyone on the boards seems to say they are terrible. Follow your bliss or something. :)
Kaijitsu Kenji
I don't mind the class being 'sub-optimal'. I was just worried I'd be utterly useless to the party. Anywho, I have finished the leveling up, I'd appreciate it if we can collaborate and figure out what the total of my part of the loot moneys is.
I will update the character now! :D
I did the switch, and did some stat tweaking, and put expanded my professions to include one point in profession barkeep, and one point in Lore: Kaijitsu Family to represent my watching Ameiko work the Rusty Dragon and listening to family stories.
Oh, and I am glad I get cantrip-like effects now. The fact that my light creates heat will be helpful if we get somewhere cold for some reason. Also, since I can no longer do ranged (what the heck, class, wth) I took out PBS and took Kinetic Counter instead. No idea if that'll be useful but hey, I guess I'll find out!
Hiro Takemashi
Thanks DM Jesse! I'll update Hiro and get a post in the Gameplay thread tomorrow.
Thanks for letting us use Background Skills. I'll take you up on your suggestion and use one of my 1st level background skill points on Knowledge (nobility) and re-allocate the point I originally used to an adventuring skill.
Also I just reviewed the errata for Ultimate Combat - looks like the revised average starting gold for a 1st level samurai is 175 gp instead of 105 gp; unfortunately, the revised cost for kikko armor (which I was using) increased from 30 gp to 250 gp. Guess I don't have kikko armor anymore! Glad we found a couple of masterwork Tien mail shirts...
DM Jesse Heinig
The latest Ultimate Combat and Ultimate Race errata had some, let's say "questionable" choices in them.
As far as the kikko armor goes, it's better than scale so obviously the price had to go up. Don't worry too much, you guys will shortly have plenty of cash to upgrade your gear.
Hiro Takemashi
Sorry for the delay! Finally got Hiro updated. I decided to take a level in Brawler - I thought that would be a way to reflect some of the more unorthodox combat training Hiro received from his ninja mother.
I compiled a list of the treasures we've found (and kept) to date. Here's a list of the treasures we kept from our foray against the goblins:
- (from Walthus Proudstump) Cloak of Resistance +1 (Jinda)
- 1 Potion of Cure Light Wounds, CL 3 (Jinda)
- 5 magical bone arrows with serrated-teeth arrowheads (need to ID) (Lyraesel)
- 1 Skyrocket
- 6 masterwork shuriken (suggest each of us keep one as a souvenir of our first adventure and give the sixth to Ameiko)
The party purchased a used Cure Light Wounds Wand (27 charges) after the foray against the goblins – currently 21 charges remain after the mapping adventure.
And here's a list of the treasures we found in our mapping adventure:
From the skeletal samurai:
- Magical Wakizashi (damaged) (given to Hiro by Ameiko)
- Broken Masterwork Kusari (Chain Shirt)
Ornate chest:
- Masterwork Kusari
- 5 Potions (all same type; unknown)
- 3 Potions (all same type; unknown)
- 2 Potions (all same type; unknown)
- Magical Ring
- Wand of Identify
- Masterwork Cold Iron Wakizashi
- 11 Desnan Candles
- 4 Skyrockets
- 3,820 sp
- 421 gp
- Jewelry
I think that's everything. Does anyone mind if Hiro takes a Masterwork Kusari?
Kaijitsu Kenji
Yeah I'm totally fine with you taking the Kusari and the Wakizashi.
I dunno, I have UMD, but Jinda would be more likely to make any wands work unless they're divine spells. (Then most of them would be Lyraesel's to work with). It's just a back-up skill just in case.
I'm interested in The magical ring. I don't get to wear armor anymore, so I'd be interested if it's a ring of protection.
DM Jesse Heinig
So, you guys are about to complete the first act of the first module, and move on to act 2. The second act is all about caravan travel and getting familiar with the caravan system.
I'm going to start introducing minor NPCs fast and furious here, as you need to have a set of various folks to do jobs on the caravan, ranging from guards and outriders to cooks and porters. I'll keep a few notes on the long Campaign Info page so you won't forget who's who. Interacting with these people will give opportunities for more role-playing.
We'll try out the caravan rules for Jade Regent. If you guys decide they're not fun, we'll adjust as needed to keep the adventure entertaining!

Forgot to add the 1,000 gp reward from the town for mapping the Brinestump Marsh. Also, we need to figure out how much the jewelry is worth.
Now that we've leveled up, would it be possible for Jinda to try to identify the magical items again with the aid of the Wand of Identify?

Yes, Jinda can attempt to identify your various items again! Jinda, got some rolls for us?
Also, Jinda can use Appraise on the jewelry, if he decided to take that as a Background Skill. :)

I've got a new job, started this week. I'll get some posts in today. It'll be a couple of hours though.
Congrats on the gig! :D
Hiro Takemashi
How this AP might’ve ended in an alternate universe:
Hiro returns to the Rusty Dragon and takes his usual seat near the door before opening the mithral scroll tube and reading its contents.
"My son, my heir.
You know now that I have kept secrets from you. You were always a perceptive son, and while you may not understand my reasons for secrecy, I hope that you realize it was necessary. Know that I was not angry with you for opening the warding box—I was angry with myself for withholding the truth from you and forcing you to seek out what I should have given to you. The words I spoke to you were from anger with myself, and it shames me to think of them now. I write this note as an apology, and to beg you to leave these secrets to history.
The next few days will be the most important I have faced in many years. If our family’s enemies have, as I hope, forgotten us, I shall reunite with you and your wife, and your mother and I shall reveal the truth to you. But if they still seek the contents of the warding box, I fear that I may not speak to you again. The box holds our family’s greatest treasure, so I have returned it to Kortun’s care, and it shall remain hidden in the secret third vault under Brinewall Castle—obscured from our enemies, I hope and pray. I will not grant our foes the satisfaction of killing me themselves—if it comes to it, let my death, by my own hand, be my final act to protect you, so that our enemies believe our line ended.
I have instructed Tsutamu to keep this letter from you, delivering it to you only should I fail to return as I hope to. If I can, I will reveal all to you myself. If I cannot, this final missive from a father to a son must suffice as an apology in place of an explanation, and you must destroy this letter, flee to the south, and never return to Brinewall. If our enemies find what I have hidden, there will be nothing here for you. If they do not, they will lie in wait forever for your return.
I hope to see you again soon, my son. But my heart tells me I will not. I am sorry to have failed you. But I am proud of you, and I know you will survive this old man’s shame. You are strong, and you must remain so. For if you are reading this and I am gone, know that our enemies will never stop searching for us, and that is why I cannot reveal the truth to you until I know there is no chance of them finding us again.
Rokuro Kaijitsu
Sunday, 29 Desnus, 4687"
Hiro’s eyes widen in surprise as he silently reads the words written on the scroll. 4687? That's 24 years ago, before Ameiko or I were born. Rokuro Kaijitsu? He was her grandfather; Lonjiku-sama’s father… the samurai muses.
Hiro studies the letter again, his eyes repeatedly drawn to the words ”… should I fail to return…” and ”… you must destroy this letter, flee to the south, and never return to Brinewall…” as well as ”… our enemies will never stop searching for us…” and ”… they will lie in wait forever for your return”. His mind returns to the day his parents revealed to him their family’s true purpose for serving the Kaijitsus. ”Your mother’s family as well as my own have always protected the Kaijitsu line. One day it will be your duty and honor to protect the Kaijitsu heirs,” his father Shirota had explained. ”By whatever means necessary,” his mother Kasuri had added, a steely edge present in her normally soft voice.
Hiro glances around the common room of the Rusty Dragon, noticing the only other occupant - the elderly halfling cook Bethana – busily cleaning tankards behind the bar and paying him no mind. Hiro studies the letter one last time, closes his eyes for a moment, and then crumples the scroll into a ball. The Tien man walks over to the hearth and stirs the ashes to uncover still-smoldering coals. He places the crumpled scroll onto the coals and gently blows on them until the revived embers spark the parchment aflame. He watches intently until every scrap of the letter is completely burned to ash, and then stirs the embers and ashes to further disperse the powdery remains.
The samurai stands and walks from the common room and into the kitchen to find Kenji working on a batch of rolls. ”It smells good in here, Kenji,” Hiro greets his young friend. ”What’s for breakfast?”

Thanks Hiro. Ameiko does agree to let the party keep everything in the chest (and the chest itself, which is worth 250 gp).
I'm doing set-up for an event tomorrow, so I will likely be a little behind until Sunday.
Lyraesel
So now falls to our mighty Arcanist to identify things so we know what we've got. No rush (congrats on the new job). Also, don't forget to level up Jinda.
DM Jesse Heinig
Only if you want to -- I'm just jugglin'.

We still need to ID magic items, determine value of jewelry, decide who is going to keep what, and decide what to sell.

I have umd... but I'm not able to id items... except maybe different forms of bread.

So to determine how many charges left on the wand and what is the ring, here are spellcraft checks with the identify casted.
Spellcraft Wand: 1d20 + 10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 10 + 7 = 21
Spellcraft Ring: 1d20 + 10 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 10 + 7 = 33
I'd like to add these spells to my spellbook
Protection from Evil
Enlarge Person
Expeditious Retreat
Feather Fall
Memorize Page
The 2 I learned from leveling are:
Identify
Ray of Exhaustion

The wand has 27 charges; the ring is a ring of climbing.
No problems with adding spells at this time -- with the usual prices, of course! :D
DM Jesse Heinig
At this time folks should brush up on the caravan rules. They're in the Jade Regent player's guide, starting on page 16. If you sorta get eyes glazed over, don't worry too much about it -- Sandru will make suggestions and you guys can give feedback based on what you think is important.
Also, Jinda, do you wanna Identify the magic arrows as well?
DM Jesse Heinig
DC's a 21 for the arrows (they are equivalent to a +2 weapon) so... try again next time! :D
Lyraesel
I'll put in a bid for the Ring of Climbing. I think I'm probably the most likely to make use of it, and the ring being made of leather kinda fits the druid, natural motif.
Hiro Takemashi
Updated loot list with who's claimed what so far (or suggested distribution of potions - feel free to modify), and sale prices for the rest (assuming sale value = half of purchase price).
Foray against the goblins:
- (from Walthus Proudstump) Cloak of Resistance +1 (Jinda)
- 1 Potion of Cure Light Wounds, CL 3 (Jinda)
- 5 magical bone arrows with serrated-teeth arrowheads (NEED TO ID; DM Jesse indicated these are +2 equivalent weapons and DC 21 Spellcraft to reveal properties {likely +1 arrrows with additional +1-equivalent enhancement(s)}) (Lyraesel)
- 6 masterwork shuriken (suggest each of us keep one as a souvenir of our first adventure and give the sixth to Ameiko)
- 1 Skyrocket (sale value 25 gp)

- Tsutamu's Broken Masterwork Kusari (Chain Shirt) (Hiro)
- 5 Potions of Cure Light Wounds (one for each member of the party)
- 3 Potions of Lesser Restoration (one each for Jinda, Kenji, and Lyraesel)
- 2 Potions of Cure Moderate Wounds (one each for Hiro and Magnauk)
- Ring of Climbing (Lyraesel ?)
- Wand of Identify - 27 charges (Jinda)
- 3,820 sp (value 382 gp)
- 421 gp
- 1,000 gp payment from town
- Masterwork Kusari (sale value 125 gp)
- Masterwork Cold Iron Wakizashi (sale value 185 gp)
- 11 Desnan Candles (sale value 27 gp, 5 sp)
- 4 Skyrockets (sale value 100 gp)
- Jewelry (value 560 gp; sale value 280 gp)
- Minkaian chest (value 250 gp; sale value 125 gp)
If anyone wants to claim anything else, please speak up. Otherwise, the sale of the fireworks, undamaged masterwork kusari, masterwork cold iron wakizashi, jewelry, and chest added to the monetary treasure equals 2,670 gp, 5 sp; or 534 gp, 1 sp each.

Sorry I've been a bit sparse lately.
I've been really occupied designing my own tabletop game system, and development is a whole lot harder and time-consuming than I thought. I gotta hand it to Paizo for getting out some quality stuff as quickly as they do.
Okay after looking at the Caravan rules, I think Kenji is best suited to take the Cook and Hero positions. I actually have ranks in Knowledge: Nature, Heal and Diplomacy, in case it is helpful.
Hiro Takemashi
Spellcaster: Spellcasters are versatile characters who can fill one of several job roles in a caravan, choosing from entertainer, guard, guide, healer, or scout, regardless of whether they meet the job’s requirement. Bonuses granted by spellcasters stack with those granted by any other job, but as with all jobs, any spellcasters in excess of five do not provide additional bonuses. Requirement: Any PC or NPC capable of casting spells can serve as a spellcaster. Spellcasters must be recruited during the course of the adventure; they cannot simply be hired.
So Jinda, Lyraesel, and Ameiko could all serve as Spellcasters, with Lyraesel currently serving as a Scout and Ameiko currently serving as Entertainer. Koya could serve as a Spellcaster as well, but I assume she will be dedicated to the Fortune-teller position.
Can the Spellcaster change jobs on an as-needed basis? EDIT: Just saw this line in the first paragraph of the Travelers description in the Players' Guide: Characters who meet the prerequisites for more than one job must pick which job they’re performing at the start of a day—they can switch to a different job after 24 hours have passed.
DM Jesse Heinig
So I can specifically be the guide with Know:Geo at +7
Or generic spellcaster. Or both?
You can do Hero + 1 other job.
Guide: You give a +1 bonus on Security checks.
Spellcaster: (short version) You can give bonuses as if you are an entertainer (+1 on Resolve checks), guard (+1 to Offense), guide (+1 on Security checks), healer (gives long-term healing to six travellers), or scout (no personal consumption and either give 2 provisions per day or +1 on Security checks). Spellcaster bonuses stack with bonuses from other job holders, so while normally you can't get bonuses from more than (say) 5 guards at a time, you could get 5 guards + spellcaster bonuses.

You pretty much always want someone in the fortune-teller position, because a Varisian caravan without a fortune-teller has a -2 penalty on a bunch of stuff. Koya is the natural fit for this, but technically anyone who can cast divinations can do it (yes, if you have detect magic, you too can be a fortune-teller).
Spellcaster is a special position not only because you have to be able to cast spells and you can do various other jobs without their requirements, but because the spellcaster bonuses stack with other people doing that job "normally."
