Marnos purse his lips in thought. "We cannot see them without light, and light will betray us if we try to sneak up on them. We might have to try a more direct approach. Tell us about the layout of the room. How wide is the corridor there? How much room before we meet the Derro? Is there positions from which a bow may be fired? how many would be needed to screen the weaker members? We need to put together a plan."

Crux, Know Local:
Since derro live exclusively underground, Crux surmises they have a vulnerability to sunlight, which slowly drains their vitality. He has also heard derro often use poison and poison weapons, and they are generally considered quite insane, killing and torturing for the sheer pleasure.

Even given Travigan's noisy version of stealth, the two derro seem to be so involved in their pastime that they are still unaware of the presence of the party.

As such, you have a Surprise Round to begin things. Remember it is move or standard action only in the surprise round. There is enough blue glowing mold in the room to provide illumination for battle, which is how Tina saw them in the firs place.

Travigan bulls his way past Marnos and Tina, "Pardon me, pups, ol' Travigan's comin' through!" and draws his massive hammer as he does. He bursts around the corner of the tunnel, past Tina, and lumbers up to the nearest derro with an angry scowl darkening his face, "Surprise, ye filthy, body-snatchin' dogs! We've come ta reclaim the lad!"

Tina wiggles aside as Travigan moves past(One square west, 1 south) and smoothly draws a dart from her quiver, expertly trowing it at the Derro just south of Travigan

Derro Cave - Surprise Round - continued

Shoving his way forward, Travigan rushes the table where the derro play at their terroristic games with little mice. His onslaught totally catches the derro unaware, and they overturn the table with dice and mice spilling every which way as they react to his challenge.

Crux, grumpily in the back, holds for a beat, waiting to see what more develops.

The red derro, startled by sudden encounter, looks around wildly at first panic starting to set in. When he sees the human engaging him, a wicked smile crosses his face but he doesn't have time to react more.

Tina: this is Surprise Round, so only Move or Standard Action allowed, not both. If you move two squares, that's a move action, so you can't do that and throw the dart this round. Hold the roll above for next round, if you like.

Weaponless, blue derro also leaps to his feet, overturning the table, and chattering nonsensically in a language nobody here understands.

Action is down to Marnos and Kalvin. Crux can also jump in whenever he feels the urge. That will end the Surprise Round, and we'll back in normal rounds right after.

As the others settle into position, Travigan brings his massive hammer down with a thunderous, over-head swing, "Quit yer grinnin'! Where's the lad's body?!"

Already near to an enemy, Travigan brings down his mighty hammer against the still surprised derro, the maul smacking hard against the foe, who surprisingly stays in the fight.

Stepping back from the combat, Red Derro begins casting a spell, and suddenly a tremendous cacophany of sound emanates from near where Tina stands.

All of the heroes except Crux (by luck of positioning) are affected and take 8 dmg. All affected must make a DC 15 Fort Save or be stunned for 1 round also.

If not stunned, Tina throws a well-placed dart, striking the Red Derro for an additional two points of dmg. If stunned, she'll have to hold that throw till next round.

Blue Derro snatches up his crossbow and fires at Marnos, but the quick shot is not accurate, and misses the half-elf.

Sound Burst Dmg: 1d8 ⇒ 8
Blue Derro Crossbow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

Crux, Marnos and Kalvin are up provided they make the DC 15 Fort save as noted above (Crux doesn't need to).

Crux begins a summoning spell, while Tina is dazed by the sonic attack. Travigan seems unaffected, and Marnos is able to loose an arrow that penetrates the armor and skin of the derro, killing it.

Just Kalvin now to finish the round. Needs the Fort save to act or be dazed. I will run if he is still not ready later today.

Travigan frowns at the fallen derro, "Ye didn't answer th' question!" then looks up at the remaining one. He rushes around the table, cornering it with Kalvin, and brings his hammer to bear once more.

Derro Cave - Round 2 - continued

Frowning as the first foe falls, Travigan rushes around the table, swinging his earthbreaker at the second derro. The hammer mashes against the head of the creature, which falters a bit, but then rights itself.

As Tina watches carefully, the derro reaches for its own club, making an aggressive move. Seeing that, the alchemist throws her dart, striking the derro another wound, but not stopping it.

Raising its strange club to strike, the remaining derro turns on Travigan with a fury, babbling in its strange language.

Blue Derro Club: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Dmg, Travigan: 1d6 ⇒ 4

Rest of the group is up and at 'em.

Marnos shot misses the remaining derro, and Kalvin's sword blade cuts only thin air as the derro dodges his blow.

Derro Cave - round 3 - concluded

Travigan's patience worn thin with the jabbering derro, smashes the remaining foe square on teh head with his earthbreaker. A sick crunching sound is all that is heard, but everyone knows it is the end of the battle.

Nice work! Killing the derro earned you 400 xp per player. This mvoes the groups cumulative total to 4353/6000 or about 39% to level 4.


Again this room is rank with the stink of sweat and mud, and contains four filthy straw pallets and a (now overturned) table which was once covered with dice and a miniature maze of carved clay. There is a hammer and pair of pliers lying nearby.

A very narrow passage seems to lead off to the west somewhere (where exactly is outside the scope of this adventure, let it go). Another passage to the east seems to rise up some rough-hewn steps.

It leaves Travigan and Marnos 1 hp down each, and everyone else at full. I believe you have 46/50 charges left. Or did you use one other time that I missed?

Travigan nods gratefully to Tina as his wounds knit and the trickles of blood stop flowing from his ears, "Thanks, lass." He thumps the head of his hammer into the ground and leans onto the handle as he looks to the others, "I don't suppose anyone understood their gibberin'?"

presuming that was one charge for each of us and the charges were distributed in order, I'm left at 20/25 rather than 24/25. That's still plenty healthy and I'm happy there - just wanted to clarify.
