I think much of the detail in the city guide is normal background for a resident of the city. Someone from outside, like Mirela, may have to make a knowledge check, but others should know things like the local landmarks etc. To me, local knowledge checks would be to know secret or uncommonly known things, like who the leader of the thieves guild is, or if the local judge is on the take.
I don't believe there are spoilers in the City guide, but it has been some time since I read it through.
DM DoctorEvil |
Not sure there was any mention of the day or date when we began the campaign or even the season or time of year. I just randomly set the date that is just ending as Wealday, 4 Pharast 4717 AR. The next day will be Oathday, 5 Pharast.
Note that Pharast is the analog to our April, so it is an early spring day/night.
Aleira |
Sorry for the delay - I'm slammed at work (in the final stages of a PhD and am writing up three papers simultaneously so was working all weekend).. posting may be a little sporadic but i'll try to keep up. Fortunately Aleira is a woman of few words :)
DM DoctorEvil |
Glad to know you are still here, Aleira. I don't envy you the work of a PhD. We will allow for sporadic posting. If we get in combat, I will run you if missing for more than 24 hours, or if you notice me that you'll be missing.
I still show Aleria a skill point short as of Level 2 updates. Did you want to spend it?
Also, if you don't mind updating your stat line on profile page, that will help in the future.
Twilight. |
I swapped out my domain spell charm person for domain spell true strike.
I left all my wizard slots, school power and arcane bond empty for now. If/when we get to the Yellow Juggler I'll spend an hour to fill them up.
Devan Covarie |
I see what you did there...very punny. :p
I keep forgetting we're walking around with Zellara's head, which seems like a pretty inexcusable oversight!
Mirela Wintrish |
Should we get a map of Korvosa linked at the top of the AP and start marking locations we care about on it? It's only the first day, and we have The Yellow Juggler, The sailors Delight, Madam Zellara's house and the mansion with the Kids that may well be important going forward.
Plus there's the fishery, the Castle and Acadamae and now a grave in the Gray district that we may want to visit some day.
Without some sort of map, I would think we might start to lose track of where everything is.
Devan Covarie |
I believe Atticus has the harrow deck at the moment...maybe he should call upon Madame Zellara to identify our unknown potion and wand?
Mirela Wintrish |
We can guess the wand shoots acid right?
Devan Covarie |
Alright...I think we should keep the brooch for getting in good with our new monarch.
Can Aleira use the wand of magic missile without UMD? If so, I would say she should probably have it.
Probably need to keep the key dagger to see if we can get a better value for it beyond the MW quality.
In my opinion everything else can be sold.
Thoughts?
Atticus Fulvios |
Atticus will leave his a backpack, a bedroll, an iron pot, a mess kitUE, soap, torches (10), trail rations (5 days), and a waterskin. at home. I have made a remark in my equipment section.
I think those 3 items should be kept:
Wand of Acid Splash (26 charges), a dose of Silversheen and an Oil of Keen Edge
Twilight. |
I am wondering if the key dagger might be of particular interest to the guard. It might help close a cold case for them and curry some favour?
I'm not sure if this is too meta-y, but dagger +1 I might be inclined to keep in the group at the moment just in case we run into something damage resisty. Silversheen for the same reason.
Devan Covarie |
So I'm thinking we should just assign the wand of MM to Aleira, then, since she has a fair chance of utilizing it?
I agree about the key dagger, Twilight.
I suppose I was thinking that the extra gold to spend per character was more useful at this level than any utility we might garner from the other items mentioned, but I defer to you all.
Devan Covarie |
It would give Devan the same average damage, a slightly better hit chance, and a worse crit range. The 191 gold each sounds more appealing than the marginal gain in fighting effectiveness, as far as he goes.
DM DoctorEvil |
Since the discussion on magical dagger, oil, wand of MM, and silversheen is still in progress, I will give you the value of the rest of the items now, you can still come to decision on those items, and I will allow retro payment at least for a while. The total of sale items if you sell EVERYTHING else is 250gp per character (I highlighted the items sold in green for now). I will be deleting the sold loot from the Tracker and adding money to your cash accounts, so speak now or forever hold your peace on all but the 4 items mentioned above. If you choose to keep any of those items, I need to know who is carrying them.
Typically, if ANYONE wants an item, then they can be held out of sale pile, but I'll let you guys work it out.
Devan Covarie |
DM, I think Twilight and I agreed to hold onto the key dagger for now to try and possibly gain favor with the Guard later. Unless someone strongly feels that we should sell it I think that's the current plan.
Devan has no interest in any of those four things, but will gladly possess the key dagger for now as long as it doesn't throw off his encumbrance.
Mirela Wintrish |
That Adamantine Arrowhead is really tempting, but I already snagged the longbow, so I'd say let it go.
As for the the dagger, I'm fine if people want to sell it or someone wants to claim it. Nargun would be the most likely to need it if we run into something that needs magic.
Devan Covarie |
yep, I kept the key dagger and the Queen's brooch out of the sell pile also. Guess I should've mentioned.
Or I could have looked at the loot sheet and seen you highlighted the 'sold' group. Works both ways. :)
Mirela Wintrish |
Understand completely. I'm so wiped I can barely keep my eyes open.
And this is the first chance I've had to post all day.
Mirela Wintrish |
Atticus, can you damage these things? Because I think Aleria can not, so do I need to focus on damaging them?
Or do we run?
DM DoctorEvil |
I edited the Loot Tracker, removing the sold items. I also assgined the magical dagger to Atticus. Next the other magic items (Oil of Keen Edge, Silversheen, and Wand of MM) they sum to 772.5gp, or 120.42 per player. No one has asked for them officially, so I will sell them too. They are highlighted green on the Tracker in case someone want to review.
Updating cash tab for now. If someone wants, they need to sing out in next day or so, or they will be gone as part of the transactions with the gnome pawnbroker.
Twilight. |
If Aleria isn't taking the wand of magic missile, I will officially pick it up.
And I know this might muddle the situation a bit, but the whereabouts of the silversheen could be important at the moment.
Devan Covarie |
If no one claimed the silversheen then it's likely with us at the pawnshop. Although I guess the other group could try to claim it depending on the DM's good graces.
DM DoctorEvil |
Since no originally claimed the silversheen, it should be with Devan and the gang getting sold, but since I am nothing if not benevolent, I will allow the Professor curiosity about the substance to have gotten the better of him, and suppose that he snuck it in his pocket as the group parted ways at House Aquilla.
If Atticus declines, it can be sold.
Since Twilight is claiming the Wand of MM, that reduces the pile (including silversheen) to 550gp or 91.67 per player. If the silversheen is also used, then the total becomes 425gp or 70.83/player.
Will see what the devil-fighters want to do.
Mirela Wintrish |
I too would average no damage unless I use the strength bow, and then I would be 60% chance of missing. So we need to just run and try to lose these things in a crowd.
But Mirela isn't moving until the witch starts to move....
Devan Covarie |
Atticus just poured 2 1/2 lbs. of gold on that dagger. Impin' ain't easy, man...give them a break. It's frustrating being the low men on the totem pole in the Abyss.

Twilight puts on some glasses and pulls out her spellbook, holding it as if she was referring to it during a lecture. Adopting a droning voice characteristic of many professors at the Acadamae she intones "Well actually, Devan, Imps are of the class infernicus devilshea impicoli which places them as natives to the planes of Hell. Perhaps you are thinking abyssea demonicus quasitea or the common quasit which are native to the planes of the Abyss? I'm sure my colleague, Professor Atticus would be able to provide a more detailed analysis of the differences and similarities between the two should you be interested in pursuing the subject further."
;p
Devan Covarie |
Ha! I always confuse quasits and imps, so I stand corrected Madame Twilight. No need for the deep dive from the Professor...I started fidgeting halfway through the quaint summary you so elegantly provided. Although, I think for the context we can use Abyss and Nine Hells pretty interchangeably (don't tell Asmodeus I said that...).
I do think 'hot teacher' is a good look for you, though. Too bad eyeglasses are a bajillion coins in Pathfinder. :p

Breaking away a twig Atticus takes a more dramatic posture.
"My collegue is absolutely correct and brings shame to those that expelled her. I can understand your misconfusion, but if you want we can start by the different behavoirs. We have, of course, to differentiat in behavior normalis, that means in their regular homeplains, the behavior subservantitus, if called and commanded and their behavior libertatis, if they have taken care their commander is dead."
Devan Covarie |
Pass. Thanks, though. I mean, you can go ahead and talk and gesture with your twig and whatnot while I doodle. I aim to please. And Nargun wants to hear ALL about the different characteristics, I'm sure.
Mirela Wintrish |
Why do I have the feeling that Twilight would be the teacher who ever male student tries into her class.

Here is a Paizo art representation of the imps/house drakes battle for your viewing pleasure. Post-combat Summary to come later today.
DM DoctorEvil |
The encounter as written calls for 4 imps vs full party (typically 4 PC's) that's quite lopsided, but the house drake cavalry is there to save the day in any event. I thought our half-party did a pretty good job of downing one of the devils and if Atticus had rolled one number higher, they were darn close to beating them both. Mostly a flavor encounter, but you did earn some XP for it.
Post Combat Summary - Imps and Meet the Mob
Defeated: One Imp & 4 thugs. I combined the XP awards for each subgroup. The XP's awarded for combat wins totals 190 per player. For rescuing Amin Jalento, there is a story award of an additional 67xp. Combined these two event encounters earned each player 257xp. This should bring the cumulative total to 1869/3300 or about 28% to level 3.
Status:
Aleira - full HP
Atticus - 2 hp dmg; 1 pt of Dex dmg
Devan - full HP; 1 STR, 2 DEX, & 2 CON dmg; not resolved
Mirela - 2 hp dmg ; 2 DEX dmg
Nargun - full HP
Twilight - 6hp dmg
Resources used:
Mirela - 2 arrows used (26 remaining). Cast Protection from Evil.
Devan - cast Charm Person once
Aleira - cast Ear-Piercing Scream and Sleep
Atticus - extract of Shield used; Silversheen consumed; 2 inspiration used
Twilight - used 1 channel; cast Mage Armor
Nargun - none
Didn't plan on this being a split encounter and running two combats simultaneously, but it just seemed to work out that way given the two groups. Think it went ok.
Mirela Wintrish |
I think the two encounters both worked out well, and have given plenty of flavor to setting.
Nice job!
