Twilight was not her real name, it was the name she adopted to distance herself from the family that had cast her out. Her human mother was a minor noblewoman named Sianna Lochlorne. She did not know who her elven father was but it was likely he was one of the elves from Perishial's entourage. Growing up Twilight was always an outsider. Although her mother treated her kindly, Twilight always knew that she was a source of shame to her family. Her step father provided a comfortable lifestyle, but generally had as little to do with her as possible. He was not malicious, but he had no interest in raising another man's daughter directing most of his attention to his own three children, Twilight's two sisters Tinette and Theria and her brother Marsek. When Twilight was old enough she enrolled at the Acadamae. Her step father was happy enough to pay for her tuition as it moved her out of the house. Although the entrance exam was grueling she easily passed. Since growing up she had often been encouraged to find activities that kept her out of the family's way she had spent a considerable amount of time reading books in the library. Twilight was a promising student at the Acadamae, diving into her studies with zeal. It was in one of her classes that she met Wyninn Vayra, another half elf from another minor noble family. They found that they had much in common, having had similar backgrounds and experiences. Over the course of the first months at the academy they fell deeply in love. Wyninn was the first person Twilight felt actually cared about her. The day that the Korvosan Guard asked her to identify Wyninn's body was devastating. He had been stabbed in an ally, apparently the victim of a robbery as Twilight noted that a ring that bore his family crest was missing. Through her despair, Twilight had felt a rage build up inside her. Someone had taken away the most important person in her life, and that someone needed to pay for what they had done. The guard had no leads and for them the case went cold. Twilight entreated her family to help her investigate the murder privately, but though they seemed sympathetic to her cause, they weren't interested in spending money to help find Wyninn's murderer. Frustrated with her family's refusal to help and consumed with anger and grief, Twilight's performance at the academy plummeted. She began trying to pursue darker magics and was eventually expelled for poor grades and problematic behaviour. After being expelled, things only got worse at home. Feeling let down by the authorities and shunned by her family Twilight turned to the church of Calistria to pursue the satisfaction she desired. The church was all too willing to help Twilight. In her they saw a strong will coupled with a cunning mind and a dash of spite that would make a fine convert. Since she had little money to pay for their services, they arranged for a wide range of favours and jobs that Twilight would perform for them in exchange for their help. In actual fact, the tasks that they had her perform were chosen to teach Twilight more about Calistria. Each job taught her new skills and brought her one step closer to the fold. Upon hearing that Twilight had become involved with the church of Callistria, Twilight's family disowned her but she didn't care at that point. It was then that she cast off her given name and took up her new name. She had found a new family. One that was much more interested in her and her needs and that was, for a price, willing to give her all the help she needed to accomplish her goals. Despite her dark moods, and somewhat to the chagrin of her teachers, Twilight tended to favour helping the less fortunate when they approached the church for help. She had a genuine interest in helping those that could not find satisfaction through the law that had abandoned them, or for whom the prescribed justice didn't go far enough in addressing the wrong. And despite being a fine student, her teachers couldn't quell her conscience on certain matters. Over time Twilight gave herself completely to Callistria. Having proven herself faithful and devout, Twilight was welcomed into the priesthood. Twilight's earlier studies at the academy had given her a unique perspective on the use of magic. As such with the guidance of the priests she was able to develop a more flexible method of performing divine miracles, though intense study came at the cost of learning the more martial aspects of the priesthood. As well, she always had other ideas about how she could blend what she had learned at the academy with what she had learned at the church. Though her arcane studies had been interrupted, she intended to take them up again when the opportunity arose. As the ceremony celebrating her final promotion into the ranks of the priesthood came to a conclusion, one of the senior priests presented Twilight with a folded piece of paper. With a smile he said that the name inside would lead her to what she needed. Twilight knew that the priests had probably had this name for quite a long time, but she completely understood why they had withheld it from her until now. Armed with the name of a pawn shop owner she headed out that afternoon. Wyninn's ring was unmistakable, lying on the black velvet cushion that the shop owner was using to display it. The price he was asking was far beyond her means, but it wasn't the ring she was interested in. With practiced flattery and a few coins Twilight coaxed a name from the shop keep: Gaedren Lamm. |
