A Package to be Delivered

Ah, Waterdeep. Such a wonderfully lovely town, full of excitement and potential. Markets filled with every potential consumable item for sale, hustlers on every major corner, and taverns filled with tales of adventurers near and far - and more than one of them filled with lies from these very adventurers. Such is life in the big city.

But last night, you cared not for adventure, or excitement, but instead for work. There may be plenty to do in Waterdeep, but you can't do any of it if you have no coin to do it with. You have been scouring the city for days, trying to find any type of job that will at least earn you some coin and a couple of meals, but until last night you came up empty.

Ah, the evening past. Your luck was terrible in searching for work until you stepped into the Yawning Portal. A rousing good time was being had by the patrons, mostly thanks to the marriage of some couple you can't remember the names of. You knew the Portal was famous for its entrance into Undermountain, but you have also come to know that many a stout adventurer has begun their journey to fame and fortune there, either by going into the depths of the dark or by responding to one of the posters advertising for manual labor.

Anyhow, the place was hopping, and you were even able to get a free drink or two just from being there. But that's not what's important. What is important is the small flyer tacked to one of the walls nearest the women's bathroom, and the fact that it got your attention. It stated, quite plainly:

"Help! I need a package delivered, and my usual couriers are nowhere to be found! If interested, meet me here the morning after the wedding. G"

There was no mention of how much was to be paid, or where this package was to be delivered to, or who this G even is. For all you know, this could be a joke of some kind. Seriously - who tacks up a message looking for couriers near the women's restroom? But it's the best lead you've had in weeks, and you need the coin.

So here you find yourself, one morning removed from the wedding, sitting at a table at the Yawning Portal. Interestingly enough, there are 8 of you inside the main dining hall this morning, and you all appear to be waiting for the same thing - whoever this G is to show up.

It's quiet inside the hall as the sun is barely up, and the place is still a wreck from the night before. A couple of young boys rush through the room from table to table, setting it right again and cleaning up as they go. An older bar wench brings you breakfast - a pitcher of mead and some decent-smelling chicken stew - and leaves you to your thoughts as you wait for this G to show up.

OOC:

Welcome to Waterdeep! Feel free to roleplay as appropriate, get breakfast, etc. I'll move things along when everyone has had a chance to make a couple posts, but for now feel free to take liberty with the scene: servers bring drinks and food and that sort of thing. Feel free to take any actions you or your character sees fit. If it's a hostile action (breaking and entering, fighting, etc.), please roll as appropriate, although obviously these sorts of things aren't encouraged presently.

DO NOT START POSTING IN THIS THREAD UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD TO START!

I'm not sure which ward the Yawning Portal is, so I'm just going to go for Slice being from the Trade Ward, and pretend that the YP is not there.

The Slice walked into the YP for the morning breakfast, as well as for a chance at gainful employment. Time to get his feet used to the City of Splendors again.

Hmmm. Less familiar faces, and the old girl's grown a bit in the years I've been away... but the smell... the smell never changes.

He took an available seat at the nearest table and reached across the table to shake the hand of the individual seated there. "Fine morning isn't it? My head's felt better than some mornings, but the fun last night was worth it... if I remember correctly". Names S...loan, Clem Stone".

Bringing drinks to the table and some rather reheated looking chicken stew "G? Well that's kind of vague don't you think?"

Looking around the common room with rather sobering eyes this morning, the place is rambling and dingy, but it gives the impression of being comfortable rather than dirty and forbidding. Well-worn boards cover the floor. Wood paneling adorns the walls, with an elbow rail usually crowded with not-yet-empty tankards. Rich blue tapestries hang at intervals along the paneled walls. The famed Entry Well that leads down into the Dungeon Level of Undermountain dominates the common area.

Some of the tables in the common room can't be moved; they're built around wooden pillars that hold up the ceiling. All the furniture is heavy, stout wood. Lighting is provided by candle-wheels (chandeliers made of horizontal wagon wheels hung from the ceiling by chains and filled with thick, lit candles).

The infamous Entry Well is an open-topped stone ring 40 feet in diameter. A 1-foot-thick rampart wall rises waist-high, encircling air that drifts straight up from Undermountain. The outside of the well wall is studded at intervals with iron torch brackets, and a block-and-tackle hoist is chained to a stone lintel in the ceiling directly over the well. The well's dry shaft descends 140 feet from the lip of the rampart to the sand-strewn stone floor of the Dungeon Level of Undermountain. The shaft tapers as it descends, from 40 feet across at the top to 30 feet across at the bottom.

At least four guards are in the common room at all times. Two stationed by the well and two stand by the door to the kitchen.

Setting at the table is a young elvin lass in once quality clothes, both they and her seem to have spent time recently in the gutters of Waterdeep. She carries a sword and bow, and a pack of supplies though, so not your typical street urchin.

The smell of the stew nearly brings a tear to Faey's eyes as she shakes hands and makes introductions...

"Well met," She says to her new companions, a few she's seen in the neighborhood, also scrounging for work. "Well met indeed. Please, call me Faey. I take it we're all here toward the same purpose? The delivery job?"

...but as soon as the niceties are out of the way and folk are talking she digs into her stew heartily, but ravenous as she is, she listens intently to whomever is speaking.

He then continues on after he gives all of his new allies a quick glance. "I wonder what is in the package. Should we look in the package before we deliver it to see if we are doing the right thing? I mean, what if we are tricked into delivering a Hell Hound to an innocent human being?"

"Best not to ask such questions, and if you have such concerns, mysterious deliveries may not be the ideal line of work for you. As for myself, I have no such luxury of turning down jobs, poor as I am."

A young man walks into the room. He gazes upon the present I hope G really appears. I'm tired of eating these rations and sleeping on the streets. Even a good forest would be better... when he sees the strange mixed groups he approach them, surely they are here for G too.

"Howdy! I guess either you are here for G or you are a club of sorts. May I take a seat?" he sits anyway unless they look at him with hostility "I'm Alexander but my friends call me Alex. And if we will work together I may as well call you friends. But first thing first" he looks at Faey "Is the stew tasty today?" and he orders some mead and stew.

"it is a far sight better than rat 'n' mushroom, so it's good in my book."

Back to the conversation at hand, Erdann says, "not a bad idea, and surely assumed by the employer and likely therefore adjusted for. If someone opens the package and a hellhound jumps out, I don't think it'd be untoward to defend them against attack if you so chose. But what if they ordered the hellhound? Then you'd look foolish killing their new pet."

Faey puts away spoonful after spoonful of the stew, nodding enthusiastically through the conversation as various points are made and debated...the battle between opening her mouth to speak and opening it to refill with food weighing heavily on her, though for at least a few minutes the food wins out.

Upon arrival of the newest companion Faey scoots over to make room. Swallowing, she says, "Aye, tasty enough anyway, even better for not having eaten much but poorly cooked rice for a week. Please, have a seat and join in. We were just debating the pros and cons of our impending employment. Specifically the morality of deploying a mysterious box of unknown contents out onto some, presumably unsuspecting soul...versus the possible repercussions of question our employer as to the contents. A gentleman of indeterminate age but a bearing that speaks of at least a good upbringing meanders in the door, looking about him as though surprised to be there. He joins the seven of you at table, mumbling something that may an apology, or may be an inquiry, though it's not loud enough to be distinctly heard, and he appears to expect no reaction.
He accepts the bowl and mug put before him with barely an acknowledgment of it's arrival. He eats it, slowly, but if he has any opinion on it's taste or palletability, none show on his face.
His expression never seems to change, save to shift subtly from a dazed surprise to one of deep contemplation, although such things can often be seen interchangeably.

The conversation swirls and eddies around him, and he gives little sign at having heard it, or even of acknowledging his purpose. Until at last he takes up the last person to put a fine point on the question of dilemmas and packages.
"Good Faey, I would not take the risk of manipulating a package any more than absolutely necessary. Indeed, one -always- should remember: Be careful what you seek, it may find you! Thus, if we go seeking traps, we might find it. We are not paid nearly enough to take an arrow meant for someone else."

He nods as if the question has been answered for all the ages, and turns to Alex. "Am in Waterdeep??" He seem honestly surprised. "Ah, but I was just in...no, that can't be right. Well, suffice to say that I did not accept my own advice. I looked for something and I found it, and now I wish had neither. Alas, having sought and found, I have now over-educated myself in things I should never have known anything about. As I am forced to seek, so too I am forced to eat. And you never know, perhaps my quarry shall stumble upon my blind wanderings!"

He stays in silence until Jelly begins his shenanigans with Light. He frowns at the cleric and says, solemnly, "You should be more stingy with Power. It's every use is a glimpse into the Abyss. And, I can tell with Unworldly certainty...it DOES stare back."

He returns to his bowl. He thought he'd emptied it, but he's only had one spoonful from it. He takes another bite.

All of you are sitting around the table, the food and drink going down easily, and the conversation between you all flowing nicely as well. You are all getting acquainted and getting to know one another, and things seem ok. Time passes rather quickly, and after 30 or so minutes you begin to wonder if this G is ever going to show up. And then, as if fate heard you questioning your being there, the door opens, the morning sun shining from behind someone who walks into the tavern, shutting the door behind him.

When your eyes adjust to the quick bright and then back to normal, you are able to see who it is that came in - a middle-aged, slightly portly man, dressed in green robes. He is carrying several large scrolls and tubes, one of which falls out of his arms and begins to unroll on the floor. A quick glance shows that it is nothing more than a simple map of somewhere. He looks down at the map, then up into the tavern, and upon seeing all of you at your table, he approaches and sets his arm load of stuff down on the table, some it spilling into your own personal space.

"Sorry about that," he says matter-of-factly as he turns and retrieves the fallen map, rolling it back up and setting it down on the table with the rest. "It's been a hellish last couple of days, and I haven't the time to deal with everything properly."

He grabs a chair and then signals to the bar wench to get him something to eat or drink, and he then turns back to the lot of you, his blue eyes squinting slightly as he gauges your intentions.

"So, I am guessing that as all of you are the only ones in the bar, and you are all sitting at the same table, that you saw my note last night. Wonderful! I'm so glad that it was taken seriously. Posting by the women's restroom is not exactly a good way to get the attention of would-be employees, let me tell you..."

As you stare at him, he finally begins to realize that he has forgotten a few important points.

"I'm babbling on again, aren't I? And without a proper introduction, no less! Gordrenn, purveyor of magical paraphernalia, material necessities, and related items to many wizards of note, thank you very much! And yes, it is I that put that note on the wall that you all seem to have seen."

He takes another look at the lot of you and, seeing your bowls and drinks, gasps slightly.

"Oh, I'm terribly sorry! I've interrupted breakfast, haven't I? Well, please - continue eating and drinking. Although time is short, nothing is more important than a good, hearty breakfast, eh? I can wait until you are all finished!"

He sits back in his chair, crossing his arms and smiling, happily waiting for you to finish your breakfast.

Pip, having eaten his food with the speed of a goblin in a trash pile, moves over to G and says, "I just have one question. What made you put the note by a women's bathroom? I'm surprised to see so many people who answered it, and slightly dismayed at how few are women."

"I had a legitimate reason of course, but some of these...people, I guess I must say, look like they have not seen a bath in their lives. I know I'm not much better of course, but being a soldier is dusty work. You can't expect me to stay clean, can you now?"

After he is done talking to G, he amuses himself with illusory images of variously colored toads on top of Wolfgang's head. Most of them appear to be in the midst of a traditional gnomish celebration dance.

Having already eaten his food and nearly finished his drink, Erdann simply asks, "Then we are to deliver magical goods?"

Gordrenn listens to what Glasilock ask, smiling wide at Glasilock's question.

"The owner wouldn't let me post the notice anywhere...well, noticeable...during the wedding. And as this is an urgent matter, I had to do what I had to do, if you take my meaning."

When Erdann asks about the package, Gordrenn begins rummaging through the scrolls and parchments on the table.

"The package is nothing more than a simple chest. Well, a simple locked chest. Well a simple locked and magically warded chest, containing goods and items for an old friend of mine. Tauster, in the village of Thurmaster, located in Haranshire, which is...now where is that blasted map?" he then pauses and looks up.

"I will find it in a moment. Please go on eating." he says.

Alex hears with interest while finishing the stew. The chest contains some things that Tauster needs. Faey spends the time between finishing the meal and Gordrenn's appearance making small talk and telling Alex about her past. Nothing too detailed mind you, and at any reference to the folk she used to work with she only ever refers to them as "rough customers" or "unscrupulous types", and makes something of a production out of it, whispering conspiratorially...talking about them as if they were the heart of Waterdeep's criminal class, when what she's describing could only be generously described as petty theft.

Though she doesn't immediately respond to Woflgang she keeps an eye on him, less a wary eye and more a what-is-this-new-puzzle-before-me eye...

At Gordrenn's mention of the contents, "Ohhh, spell components? I take it the recipient is a wizard then?" Though speaking to Gordrenn, she is eyeing the illusory frogs dancing about Wolfgang's head, entertained by the cantrip, but also curious to see how the man will react.

Jelly then asks Gordrenn "Are we going to need horses to get there on time, or horse and buggy? If we have to walk there, that may mean sprinting it all the way."

Gordrenn listens to what you all say, smiling wide at Faey's comment.

"Ah, you are too correct, my friend! Tauster is indeed a wizard! A wizard of some note in fact that teaches a few apprentices out that way. Nothiing like the big city out there. Kind of on the back of beyond really. He thinks its safer to teach his trade in the out of the way places as it were."

He continues to muddle through the scrolls and parchments, unrolling one and then rolling it back up, then another, until finally he seems to have found what he's looking for, unrolling a rather large parchment and pointing to a specific location on the map.

"There! That's where Haranshire is. West of Nashkel, east of Cormyr. The village is right on the Churnett River, a half-day south of the southern end of The Redwood."

He grabs his cup and takes a long drink from it before pulling out a quill and some ink, writing in the common tongue (for those of you who can read) on the map. The writing says, simply, "Tauster, here in Thurmaster".

"What I need is for you to take the chest from here to Tauster. It's a rather long way off, and it won't be a quick trip. I've already arranged for whomever I hire to be part of a caravan traveling from here south to Nashkel, which is 2 tendays and a half away. You'll be provided with food and water for the journey, as well as seats on a cart, provided you respond should trouble crop up."

"From Nashkel, you'd need to travel another tenday east to Thurmaster, following the Churnett River. The caravan won't be going with you, so at Nashkel you'd separate from the caravan and take the chest by yourself. It isn't heavy, but you may want to consider finding a cart and horse to haul it from Nashkel to Thurmaster. If no cart or horse then two of you will have to carry it together. That's a long walk carrying it by yourself."

"I can pay you 150 gold coins - you can split that among all of you however you like, none of my business really - to do this. I will pay you half up-front, with the second half to be paid upon delivery by Tauster. All you need do is take this scroll..." at which point he produces a scroll from his belt pouch "...and have it reviewed by Tauster. It has all the instructions on it that I've given you so far, and he'll be able to counter-sign and then have you paid."

Gordrenn stops here, looking over the lot of you.

"So, are you willing to do this for me? Willing to make some coin for a simple courier job?"

She pauses in thought for a brief second. "I do see one hiccup though. I truly don't mean to sound too mercenary with this, but we're talking about thirty days one way for the trip, some of it sounds like working as guards, at one hundred fifty gold for the trip...which puts us at five gold per day to be divided amongst the group. With only two thirds of the trip having supplies provided for, and the need to purchase a wagon to haul the chest a ways, we're looking at receiving very little in the way of actual compensation once this is all said and done. And then there's the matter of the return trip..."

He shifts slightly in his seat, frowning a bit as he does so.

"More coin, always about more coin. But I am really pressed for time. So I will tell you what I will do. Final offer. I will give your group here 180gp for the job. As well as I will throw in 5gp for each of you to cover miscellaneous expenses on the road." he says. "Now I realize that there is 1..2..3...4..5...6..7 of you so that's lets see... 35 more gold... Now that's a total of 215gp. That should be more than fair. And don't even think about stealing it," he warns you. "It's got a wizard's mark inside it, and I'll know wherever it is. Steal it and I'll send all kinds of bad things after you."

"Now, speaking of time..." he says as he takes out his quill and a piece of parchment. If you agree to these terms then you may step forward and give me your name. If you do not agree then our business here is concluded and you may go."

You all get the impression that he isn't being rude or mean, just that he's pressed for time.

With a flourish The Slice returns his dagger to its hidden sheath, and stands up.

"Well these things are never as simple as it looks... but I've got nothing better to do. I'm in".

Faey blushes at Wolfgang's praise, "I just fancy numbers."

As her companions make their marks she does likewise, ready to set off on their adventure.

"I am Erdann."

As people begin signing up for the job some of you decide to take a closer look at the map that Gordrenn has provided.

You study the map briefly, taking note of all the terrain features and the trail that you should be following. The road from Waterdeep to Nashkel is well-traveled, and there are several places to stop along the way that are secure enough where you don't have to worry about ambushes or bandits. Because of this, you shift your focus to the road leading from Nashkel towards Thurmaster.

You notice that the road appears to end at a town called Milbourne, just east of Thurmaster. It travels along the southern edge of The Lyrchwood, and then banks north to follow the Churnett River to Milbourne. By your estimation, and the distances between things on the map, you are guessing it's about 2 days from Milbourne to Thurmaster.

You notice that there are several places within Haranshire that could potentially be used as places to ambush someone or a group of someones, just based on the terrain indicated on the map. However, you also know that the actual terrain may differ slightly from what's represented on the map, and that just about anywhere could potentially be used as an ambush spot.

"Let's see, we've got 5 of you who have agreed." looking at the names on his paper. "There's Alexander, Wolfgang, The Slice, Faey, and Erdann. The other 2 of you? Yes? I'd like to get moving quickly, as we'll need to get this all drawn up legally and such. And, of course, witnessed at a nearby temple. And as Tauster needs his things..."

"I can be ready to move in... I'm ready now. Lets go. For all of you who don't know, the names Glasilock Haridensford, but you can call be Pip. Or Quartermaster. Whichever you prefer." Pip stands up, searching hopefully at the bottom of his mug for some last dregs of ale.
"Ye got a toad on your head boy." he says to Wolfgang.

At the mention of the toad, which Erdann had admired for a time, he conjured up an illusory dragonfly from the weave to accompany it. The insect buzzed about, just out of reach of the frog's tongue.

Gordrenn added the next name to his list... "Pip, it is then. Well that makes six of you." He then turned his attention to the elf that remained. "So what'll it be? Going or staying." he said to Jelly.

"Sorry, yes, I agree too. The sooner we get moving the better."

At the acceptance of all 7 of you to undertake this job, Gordrenn stands up and smiles wide.

"Excellent! I am so glad to have found my couriers. Now, if you will just follow me to the nearest temple, which is just a few blocks away..."

He gathers up his things that he has strewn about the table, and you follow him out the door to the nearest temple (which happens to be consecrated and dedicated to Tyr), where you all sign a contract outlining the details of the job. The contract, should any of you wish to read it, is pretty explanatory, and outlines the following:

1. You will be transporting a chest from Waterdeep south to Nashkel, then east to Thurmaster;
2. The chest is the property of Tauster, whom you are delivering the chest to;
3. You will be part of a caravan that is leaving Waterdeep bound for Nashkel, and that the caravan will provide you with both food and a ride to Nashkel, provided you are able to provide security services should the need arise;
4. You are to be paid 215 gold coins in total, with half of the payment up front and the other half upon delivery.

The contract does not include anything you have not agreed to, and a review of it shows that everything is on the up-and-up. It is then signed by all 7 of you, Gordrenn, and then witnessed and blessed by the priest at the temple. Gordrenn then has you follow him to where the caravan will be leaving from and introduces you to the caravan master, Barshan.

"A good man, this Barshan. Don't do anything to mess up my relationship with him - we depend on each other so much for goods and services, that to lose him would be a shame!"

Gordrenn then shows you to a cart, with 2 horses, that is carrying the chest. He explains again that the chest must be delivered post-haste to Tauster, and he then hands you a pouch that, should you look, contains 107 gold coins and 1 electrum coin in it. He also hands you a parchment that, should you look, contains the details of the remainder of payment, with his signature on it. It also outlines that payment will not be made available unless counter-signed by Tauster. Gordrenn then thanks you for doing this job, and he leaves, smiling, the parchments and scrolls still juggling in his arms.

The caravan will be leaving Waterdeep in approximately 1 hour, and the journey to Nashkel will take 2 ten-days and a half. What are you doing?

All seven of you split the 50% upfront payment.

New Notable NPC will be added to the campaign tab:
Gordrenn:
A middle-aged, dark-haired, slightly portly wizard (we think) who introduces himself as Gordrenn. "Purveyor of magical paraphernalia, material necessities, and related items to many wizards of note," Gordrenn has hired us to deliver a chest to a wizard named Tauster who resides in Thurmaster in Haranshire.

New Party Treasure will be added to the campaign tab:
Scroll of Payment
A contract between the group and Gordrenn on a parchment that, should you look, contains the details of the remainder of payment, with his signature on it. It also outlines that payment will not be made available unless counter-signed by Tauster. Whom you are delivering the chest to.

OOC:

The group needs to decide who is carrying the scroll of payment that has been signed by Gordrenn and must be counter signed by Tauster upon delivery to receive the other half of the payment.

Wolfgang stays in his stupor, oblivious to the ephemeral wildlife playing a-top his head. Only when all the others have risen and are ready to leave for the temple does he seem to rouse himself. "Whatwiththewhat? Ah, yes, of course, let us...let us be about it!"

He acts quite normal as the paper is signed and the coinage divided. "I can only say that 'twould be meat were another to vouchsafe the paper of payment. I, ah...I tend to lose track of...of things."

Wolfgang mounts the cart and takes a seat in the middle.

Jelly will go to the front the caravan when he gets to it.

Barshan greets each of you warmly and explains that the caravan will be stopping and trading with other caravans and towns while in route. He also reminds you that your passage is agreed upon as long as you offer up protection services if the caravan was to be attacked.

He goes over to the cart with the two horses attached and the chest in the back. The chest looked to be of good quality with a good quality lock upon it. After checking the chest you find that it weighs about 40 pounds which was not too awful heavy. It was designed with a handle in each end so two people could easily carry it even with the chests bulk itself, which was more of the problem than the weight. Barshan quickly reminded you that such an item was best kept hidden from view during their travels and he would provide a blanket to throw over it.

He then showed you that the cart was built with a bench seat on both sides upon its length. Here you would ride during the two tendays and a half journey with the caravan.

He then told you that the caravan would be departing Waterdeep in exactly one hour and that he suggested that you make any preparations that you needed for the journey. He also explained that simple food and water would be provided in the form of rations or any food stuffs they might procure along the way and guaranteed you would be fed.

Once the caravan reached Nashkel then the caravan would part ways with you. So in Nashkel you would need to procure a pack animal and cart or complete your journey on foot to Thurmaster which would be another tenday away. Gordrenn has provided for us to supply each of you with up to a tenday of rations apiece when we part. You will be traveling along the river so water should not be a issue.

As soon as you are ready, please climb aboard.

OOC:

If you want to do any shopping with your new found coin then please do so now. If you are ready to go then climb aboard. Once everyone is on board we will be off. Also please make a final decision on who is carrying the payment scroll.

OOC:The Slice will attempt to buy a 10-gp gem with 10 of his gold pieces, as he likes to keep the coin weight down, and it's easier to conceal small gems.

"Here. let me carry the payment scroll. I shall put it in this compartment of my backpack".

He then cinches it up, places it under the bench on the Right Hand side at the front of the wagon (Facing forwards), and takes a seat when the wagon is ready to depart.
