Night Below
Milborne

As the group finished putting the bodies off to the side of the road and secured the bandit leader to the cart, the group made haste toward the small town of Milborne. The normally four hour trip took about five and a half with the physical labor to pull the cart and having to stop often for breaks and water. The bandit leader remained quite for the trip and still would not give anyone his name.

Battered and bruised the group took in the sights of the small town to plan their next move. They stopped the cart out on the edge of town out of sight as they surveyed what lay ahead.

Milborne is a small farming town of approximately 160 people. The buildings are almost all made of wood. Virtually everyone makes a living from farming or copper/lead mining in the southern Blanrydes. It is pretty simple to quickly realize that the community is fairly isolated, and strangers to the area probably are fairly rare. As a result, new visitors are probably almost certain to be noticed pretty quickly and likely to be a subject of gossip and speculation by the locals. Especially with a bound man in tow.

The group is parked on the east side of the town, coming in from the east road.

What do you do?

Taking her turn on cart duty Faey is panting, head down, and thoroughly drenched in sweat when they stop. "W-we're here?" She looks up and sees the community laid out before the group. "Where's the rest of it?' she says, more to herself than anything. Louder, to the group, she asks "Do we want to send someone in first to let people know we're bringing in a captive? Or...should we just kinda...walk in with him. Not really sure how this sort of thing is handled." From this end.

"I'll go get us rooms for the night."
Pip takes some of the money they recovered from the bandits, and heads towards the closest tavern to buy rooms.
We shouda just killed the bastard.

ooc:
Taking 5 gp and 6 sp to buy us comfortable rooms for the night. costs 8 sp per person, 5 pp, 13 gp, 8 sp, and 42 cp left of the money.

Current Map: Link To Map of Milborne

As Pip makes his way into the town proper and heads for the closest tavern which is aptly called the Baron of Mutton and enters the establishment he quickly finds the place in disarray. The cause, you soon learn from the apologetic Barthelew, is that a guest is missing. A young girl named Jelenneth retired to her room early the previous night and hasn't been seen since. Her father, a man named Haldelar (the miller) has been summoned to try and calm down Barthelew's identical twin brother Andren who seems to have been in a relationship with the girl.

You soon learn that Haldelar seems to think his daughter may have been summoned by a man named Tauster in Thurmaster whom she worked for and just had to leave in a hurry. Andren, however is hysterical and points out that it is unlike Jelenneth to have left without telling him goodbye or even leaving a note or message.

Again Barthelew is apologetic for the situation at hand and tries to explain the inn's services to Pip. They offer a service called 'roughing it' which means you share a 12-bed common room, possibly shared with the barge workers who come with their merchant masters to Milborne and are not averse to the odd spot of pilfering or to a knuckle-fight after far too many pints of ale. The beds in the common room are hard bunks covered only with an old blanket. For those wishing to wash while 'roughing it' there's the horse trough outside the tavern. A 'roughing it' bunk cost 3 silver per night per guest. A sum that includes a skimpy breakfast of day old bread and a small beer.

Staying in one of the two-person rooms is known as the 'getting by' package and cost 5 silver per guest per night (mandatory double occupancy), a guest would get a slightly better breakfast and a slightly more comfortable bed with actual sheets.

But Barthelew suggest it is better to 'live well' and have ones own private room for 9 silver per night, given that the bedding is clean, the windows and door locks are secure, and the breakfast consist of sweet cured bacon in one of Parella's fresh small loaves, which is an excellent start to any adventurer's day.

As far as real baths go, one can get a decent bath full of hot water for 2 silver if they are 'roughing it' or 'getting by' but guest that are 'living well' can get a bath for only 1 silver since they are a VIP guest.

With that a crotchety old man that looks to be in his nineties, (which is virtually unheard of in these parts) with cataracts covering nearly both eyes perks up as he throws a empty tin cup at Barthelew which misses wildly and croaks "Stop giving discounts you stupid boy! Gods be damned!" for which Barthelew responds by saying very loudly in his direction "Yes grandfather." and just kinda shakes his head at you and whispers "Don't worry about him, he usually drinks or eats himself into a comma before suppertime."

"Hmm. Maybe see if they have a jail. Or we could kill him. Or keep him until we reach our goal, if he behaves, then let him free. I am relatively ambivalent on the topic, merely reticent to let him live free while our goal remains unmet."

and if asked, i vote for the 9sp package, shower if we have time but honestly i can just clean myself via cantrip and would rather not get naked in this strange town.

If Pip is willing to spring for 8sp per person, then if we all just take the "getting by" package at 5, we'll be saving him quite a bit and we'll still have rooms. I concur on the not-naked idea. We can always go jump in the river it becomes an issue.

Wolfgang nods at Erdann. "I am of a mind with you. Let us see to the gaoler of this town and deposit our...garbage. If they have miners they must have crime, and if they have crime they must have a way to deal with it. Then we can see about delivering our charge and being about things."

Wolfgang greets the Innkeep. "A fine day to you sir. Would you have a sheriff or marshal in this town? We were waylaid by brigands on the road here, but have captured their ringleader alive. We would like to deposit him to your judge for questioning and justice. Where might such a person be found?"

Wolfgang ponders the issue of the errant girl. No doubt there would be a reward for finding her?

I am taking this from the money we got from the bandits. I was thinking we could use it to pay for our basic expenses as a group for the journey.
So at 5 sp per person, it costs 4 gp and 5 sp. So we have 5 pp, 14 gp, 10 sp, and 42 cp left of the money.

Wolfgang pays 5 silver for double room, asking if it's fine to bunk with Pip (since he has proven himself to be somewhat stable...the incident of getting his mule murdered not withstanding.)

To the innkeeper he answers, "We have been charged with delivery of a package. The incident with the bandit was mere happenstance. Incidentally, the bandit was more interested in taking us alive, as a slaver would, than our coin purses. If you know of anyone missing loved ones, I would council them to look in upon the good Marshal Garlyd once we have discharged him to his service. I doubt we were their first quarry."

Not wanting to unhitch the bandit, Wolfgang goes to the carpenter's shop. Upon entering he calls out, "Good eventide. I and my companions are newly come to your fair town, and we were waylaid on the road. We captured one of our assailants and would discharge him to your care. Take care, though. He is strong and crafty, and seems quite interested in the taking of persons alive, though for what reason no craft divisible by men or powers was able to discern."

As Wolfgang approaches the carpenter's shop he spies an older gentleman around fifty who appears by his movements to be badly lame on one leg with a black mop of hair and a lean tall frame. He has two huge retriever-like hunting hounds who accompany him. The man wears leather armor and looks to have a sword on his side and a shield along with a bow and quiver strung across his back. The fletching's on the arrows are bright red which stand out as very unusual.

As Wolfgang approaches and states his claim the older gentleman responds "Good day to you my esteemed stranger. Weilaid on the road you say?" Garyld scans the area from which Wolfgang approached from. "You mean you are from that small group with the cart parked at the inn? Not much of a caravan is it? Can't say we get many 'caravans' round these parts so I guess your group could qualify." he says curiously.

"Had some trouble out on the road did you? Well I don't know if it matters much but I am the constable of this fine town. If you have a prisoner then I will take possession of him. But first I am going to need to know a little bit more of what exactly happened out there on the road." he says as one eyebrow arches up.

"Don't be alarmed by the locals. They are friendly enough. They just don't see many strangers out here in these parts. Kinda isolated if you know what I mean. Especially when the strangers are an entire group of armored adventuring types. By the way what did you say your name was again."

As Pip inquires about the whereabouts of Barthelew's brother, the barkeep points to the man talking to Haldelar. "He is my twin. You can't miss him. can you?"

Meanwhile Jelly goes venturing off toward what he believes to be the towns temple. The first thing he notices are the beautiful gardens that surround the temple. The benches are full of young courting folks even if the garden is on the abuts of the town cemetery. The temple seems to be in honor of Torm & Tyr; as Jelly approaches he is confronted by a young priest calling himself Semheis. As Pip turns to address Andren and Haldelar the girls father is the first to speak "There is no need to pay anyone, especially mercenaries, and she is not missing. She has just had to return early to her duties in Thurmaster. I am sure this is just a misunderstanding. As for why she was staying at the inn and not at our house, well she is stubborn to say the least. Independent as they come, she wants to make her own way in the world and has a thing for privacy. Thus the private room here at the inn. We have checked her room over and there was no sign of struggle whatsoever. She also was the only inn guest staying here last night."

Andren suddenly interjects "But her door was not locked, which is odd. She did not return her key or let anyone here at the inn know that she was leaving and I found her spell component pouch pushed under her bed. She would go no where without that I assure you."

Haldelar seems upset at the mention of a spell pouch "Nonsense. My daughter is no wizard. The pouch probably belonged to her employer, he is the wizard. I warned her to stop hanging around such people. Why she wanted to work for one is beyond me, and her mothers comprehension. I am sure she will turn up in a day or two and all will be well or at least send you a note, Andren. Or perhaps she has called the whole engagement off and just has cold feet."

Andren suddenly interjects wrote:

That is strange indeed... it looks like she got kidnapped, no spellcaster worth the name would run away without his reagents.

"Disappearances aren't unusual, but there is something strange about what you said. Andren, can we talk in private for a minute, I'd like to ask you a few things if you don't mind. I can't speak for the rest, but I fully intend to help you find your fiancée."

Alex stands up and walks to the other end of the inn, waiting for Andren to come with him.

"Jelenneth's father seems ashamed of her magical associates but if she is truly a conjurer of any sort she wouldn't have left her pouch, it would be like if I left without packing my sword or armor, strange to say the least. That she left the door open is bizarre too, but I didn't want you to come to repeat all of this. I'll get straight to the point: Did she have any other suitors? I fear she may be kidnapped, maybe she is being kept here in the town... and if that's the case we have no time to spare, so please be honest and try to recall as well as you can. And did Haldelar approve of your relation? I don't want to offend nobody, but we can't be too thorough."

As Alex pulled Andren aside to discuss matters, Andren listened to the man's questioning before responding "Jelenneth had no other suitors. We were engaged to be married. Haldelar is stubborn but we have no problem between us. He just doesn't like her running off between here and Thurmaster or working for Tauster, he thinks that her place is here at home working in the mill and continuing the tradition like the rest of the family. I am unconvinced that she just wandered off or went somewhere without telling me. Jelenneth is Tauster's apprentice and if you are going that way then can you help look for her along the way? Ask anyone you run across if they have seen her. Then if it isn't too much trouble could you ask Tauster himself once you get there?"

He then reaches in his pocket and produces a locket with the girls picture engraved inside it and shows it to Alex. The locket reveals an attractive young woman with long black hair and green eyes. "She is 20 years old, 5' 4", and of slim build. She usually wears a distinctive rich blue cloak with silver clasps at the neck. She also wears a small silver signet ring that I gave her; it has a "J" engraved on the inside of the band."

Garyld begins unhooking the bandit leader from the cart and securing him for transport.

"I am going to take him up to the Mansion House and turn him over to Mr. Carman's men to answer questions for his crimes. I will meet all of you back here at the Baron and Mutton as soon as I am done." he says as he points to the inn.

"The Baron and Mutton has plenty of accommodations available, both if you want to 'rough it' or if you want to 'live well'. Personally I would take the later."

As he turns to walk toward the mansion with the bandit leader in tow he pauses again and turns back "Oh and don't let old Dirkaster give you any trouble either."

Seeing everything in hand Pip heads over toward what appears to be the stables and kennel. As he draws closer he see's the sign "Nafton's Stables & Kennel" as he approaches he is greeted by Nafton himself. The man is roughly 37 years old and seems a bit aloof at first until Pip mentions the interest in dogs which the man immediately comes to life at the very mention of them.

"Why yes, good sir. I happen to be an expert in both breeding and training the world's finest hammerheaded mastiffs. Complete with lineage documents and guaranteed to serve you well. Many of the good townsfolks has one of my fine dogs. You never can be too careful when it comes to home protection out here on the farm as it were."

The man goes on and on about how they are bread and shows you a selection of over a dozen full grown and trained dogs and pups he currently has available as well. He also explains that he has normal equipment for horses as well (reins, saddles, nose-bags, horseblankets, and the like, but he carries no barding of any type.) He goes on to explain that there are very few horses in Milborne, since their usefullness as mounts is limited in hilly and wooded terrain; most travel around these parts is done by boat and barge rather than on horseback. However he does have a selection of quality light horses for sale. He also offers stabling of animals for 5 sp a day.

Once business in concluded he adds "If you be finding yourself traveling the rivers their is the Churnett, the Oldscutt & the Woldcote. Mostly slow-flowing, with currents flowing southwards down the Oldcutt, northwards up the Woldcote, and westwards along the Churnett. All are navigable by small river barges except inside the Shrieken Mire. Good fishin' most of the way. Mind you, it ain't as good as what it were when I was a lad, like."

Pip:

Nafton's hammerheaded Mastiff's have 8 hitpoints instead of 5 like the standard variety but cost the same. You really struck it lucky coming here. Please deduct the 30gp from your sheet. Also a pack saddle is not for riding but it will be good to carry your stuff with. The Hammerheaded Mastiff can carry up to 130 pounds of gear without being slowed down. It also can carry up to up to 195 pounds beyond that with a 10 foot movement penalty and disadvantage to all attacks, strength and dex checks.

Meanwhile Jelly receives a tour of the small temple, it is not much to look at but does have a small shrine that is dedicated to different gods including Jelly's. The temple also has a few healing potions for sale that is normally reserved for the miners but exceptions can be made. Oddly enough the temple does not sell holy water, holy symbols or cleric vestments. After the tour and conversations with Semheis's Jelly learns that the young priest is idealistic, zealous, and a born adventurer, Semheis is too pushy to suit the conservative folk of Milborne. He is something of a proselytizer as well, which does not go down well with the locals. For this reason, his church is none too well attended. The man does seem to be threatened by the presence of a "rival" cleric (Jelly) being in town.

He does explain that a itinerant priest named Lafayer visits from time to time to see how the young man is doing, but he is not expected for a while longer.

The Slice has learned from years of hard living, that it's never advantageous to stay in one spot as a group. Makes you too hard to pin down. Once they arrive, and he has a small ale to slake his thirst, he begins to explore the town. He takes note of the people of the town, to see if they seem friendly and welcoming of strangers or frightened. He finally makes his way to the other tavern in town, and stops in to see what might be different here.

"I think I'll call you Jack." Pip then takes his new dog to an open space, and plays with him until nightfall, trying to train him a bit more.

THE SILVER CROWN - The Slice
The Slice explores some of the small town finding that its people are both hesitant and stand offish from the newly arrived strangers. The business folk seem more tolerable of their presence than the common folk. He finally makes his way toward the other tavern in town and soon spies the name "The Silver Crown". This is a spit and sawdust tavern, looking mostly to be frequented by miners having a break from their work in the northern mines and intending to spend their free time drinking themselves senseless. This tavern looks to be the closest thing Milborne has to a hangout for riff-raff.

Upon entering The Slice spies a burly man behind the bar who introduces himself as Thimpsen who owns the establishment and his son Gergel who acts as a bar back. Accommodations here are 80% of what the cost is at the Baron of Mutton (Round all fractions down). There are also a few miners present that are well over half in the bag and one patron that sticks out among the crowd. A white headed dwarf of uncertain age but looks pretty old who has a old gnarled walking stick sitting beside him at a table. He seems to be talking to himself in a quite tone and drinking ale.

Once finished his chit chat with Andren, Alexander gestures to go back with the rest. There he speaks to nobody in particular "Okey, I think we should learn a bit more about this region, both for our job and to better help look for Jelenneth." he looks to Andren "Who can tell us what can we expect to encounter around? Safe roads, local raiders and bandits, creatures we have to take into account?"

BARON OF MUTTON

After Alex's inquiry, Barthelew speaks up "If you want to know all that stuff then there is no better person to tell you than Old Grizzler. He has been pretty much everywhere around here at one time or another. He usually is over at the Silver Crown drinking or talking to himself. You might have to buy him a few rounds, he is also not to friendly unless your a dwarf. He might even make you slip him a few coins first. But he knows, if anyone around here knows these parts it is that old dodger."

"Ah now this is more my kind of place. A good place for the working man to unwind after a long day. Well met... Thimpsen is it? Names Clem. Might need a room for the night, and something to wet my whistle. What's news in the town?

The Slice knows that those who talk to themselves can be good sources of information... if you can sort it out from the nonsense.

"I'll have an ale, and while you're at it pour another for that gentleman over there. He seems to need a companion to talk to".

The Slice will take the ale over to the grizzled old Dwarf unless something Thimpsen says makes him do otherwise.

SILVER CROWN

As everyone makes their way over to the Silver Crown where The Slice is already at in an attempt to question the old dwarf you find that Old Grizzler is no fool, and he doesn't tolerate fools gladly. In fact, he doesn't tolerate them AT ALL. He has strong opinions on everything, which generally come down to a belief that the world is getting worse by the day, a suspicion that young people don't have the respect for the old that they should have, and an unshakable conviction that wrong-doing should be heavily punished. "String 'em up" is his favorite expression. Despite this crustiness, the old dwarf has a soft spot and after a few ales begins to mellow a little. The more you buy, the more he drinks and the more he talks. So you question him about the surrounding area intently.
