Backpack weight explained:

Inside the backpack are 9lb worth of equipment, while attached to it are another 27 lb worth of equipment (Rope, bedroll, shovel, waterskin).
So the backpack weights a total of 36lb.

Alexander's Background:

Orphaned at a very young age, Alexander Ironwill was rised by his uncle Tom Ironwill, as his very own son. Tom was the blacksmith of their town, Shardpoint, and he taught Alexander how to work the metal and care the forge.
Under his guardianship Alexander grew strong and tall, honing his body in the forge during the long hours of work.
Their town was small, and there were no strangers among them. A close knit community that cared about each member.
They were humble but managed to live a good life, and a happy one to boot.
That was until the local lord started a petty conflict with another noble. The costs of the conflict were scalating and the good people from Shardpoint started suffering from higher taxes than acceptable and forced conscription into the Lord's army.
That's it, until the day Alexander stood his ground and stopped the Lord's agent from abusing his family and friends.

This stupid and reckless act of bravery gave Shardpoint the moral they needed to take arms and defend themselves. Soon the revenge of the Lord arrived in the form of a full squad of soldiers looking for him as the leader of the rebellion.
Alexander had to act, but he couldn't allow his people to die for him, so he bid farewell to the townsfolk and baited the soldiers into pursuing him, running away to save them.

Now he roams the land while escaping the Lord's agents and looking for wrongs to right in the name of justice and humble origins!
