Ellena Lovain |
Ellena again swung the cold iron magical sword at the skitterdark that was currently threatening her. .

Raine a'Thiel |
Raine took an adjusting step in order to have a better aim and tried to shoot the skitterdark off the blond paladin.
Rapid shot, PBS, FE: 1d20 + 9 - 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 9 - 2 + 1 + 2 = 26
Damage, cold iron: 1d8 + 3 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 1 + 2 = 7

Damage, cold iron: 1d8 + 3 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 3 + 1 + 2 = 12
With only a handful of feet between herself and the little demon, Raine's arrows flew true, but she didn't smile, merely continued to look grim and intent.
Not applying cover on my end but if you rule it's there, then -4
Ellena Lovain |
Oh I forgot to say I wanted to take a 5’ step south, so the others could move into the room, if they wanted. Could you add that in with my last posted action, DM? Thanks.
Tauni "Rabbit" Desba |
I moved Ellena's icon 5' south.
Tauni tried to line up a shot on the remaining skitterdark that she could see, loosing a crossbow bolt at it. It is only pure luck that keeps the bolt from hitting Karas when it goes well wide of the small demon.
Shooting at skitterdark #3, then reloading.
To hit 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 - 4 = 1
Damage 1d8 + 0 ⇒ (7) + 0 = 7

Avelina of House Galfrey |

"Hmph."
Avelina pouted as her spell fizzled. She drew her crossbow and loaded it, not wanting to waste more spells on such a creature if it could be helped.

Sorry for the delay. It's partly the Paizo site and partly my schedule this week. Hope things get more consistent next week when I start a new term.
As Avelina loaded her crossbow, Anarya gave Raine a little divine guidance, which helped her as she fired two more arrows into the room at the little demons. It was difficult shooting through the door at the small, swiftly moving target, but two arrows found their marks. The demon was badly wounded, but still fighting. Shooting through a doorway does provide cover, but Anarya's guidance made the difference on the second shot. 19 to Skitterdark 3. Ellena stepped out of the doorway and tried to slice the demon harrying her, but she could not hit.
The skitterdark that had sent a spell from the cover of the stairway flew back and attacked Karas while the other continued to claw and bite at Ellena. Their razor sharp claws and vicious teeth drew more blood from the two heroes. 1 hit on Karas for 7, 2 hits on Ellena for 15.

Karas Argentus |
btw GM I don't think you've taken my fast healing into account this fight. Is there a better way for me to display it? It's only like 2 or 3 points right now.

I remembered about the healing for Karas too late to update the previous post. I usually add that in in the melee status text. I'll update it for next time. Do keep track of the number of rounds you have raged, since that is a limited number per day.

Avelina stepped forward and peeked around the corner, firing a single shot from her crossbow at the skitterdark engaged in melee with Ellena.

More arrows were loosed! Raine targeted the creature clawing at Karas's face this time, her own face drawn in a silent snarl of rage for the demonkind that had so destroyed her city.

The skitterdark harrying Karas took first one arrow from Raine and then another quickly followed. The abysmal creature dropped with a light thud. A moment later, Ellena's sword mortally wounded the last remaining demon.
While all the demons were not dead, it was short work to remedy that with coup de grace blows. As all this was happening, a clatter arose from the stairway and a lot of small metallic objects fell onto the stairs from above. It was not immediately obvious what they were because one of them apparently had had a darkness spell cast on it. Karas could see that the items that fell from above were caltrops.
Raine's sharp hearing picked up sounds of footfalls and whispering from the floor above. Karas and Tauni picked up some hints of what awaited them above as well.
We are out of melee, although if anyone wants to brave the darkness and the caltrops and charge up the steps to see what reception is prepared for him/her, go ahead. I'd suggest this might be a fair point to rest and heal. Irabeth and the mongrel folk rangers can hold the hall against any attempts by those above to attack those below or from any attempts to reinforce the garrison from without. PCs can rest, regain spells and other features that are limited to a certain number per day. The demons possessed no treasure.
Avelina of House Galfrey |
When we are ready to proceed after resting and healing, the crossguard of Avelina's longsword has a continual flame cast on it, so she can cancel out the darkness.
Avelina stowed her crossbow and drew her healing wand.
"How delightful! Another victory for the Forces of Light! Does anyone require healing? Just say the word and I can provide!"
Ellena Lovain |
Im down 20 HP. I could LOH it, but Ellena would probably prefer Avelina to do it, lol.
Ellena removed her helm and sat ever so briefly. ”That demon bit me several times. I could use my scratches patched up.”. She tried to minimize any pain and injury she had, but it was clear that she had taken some bad looking wounds.
Karas Argentus |
I'm down about 12hp post combat if anyone wants to top off
Karas felt the fatigue hit as Raine's arrows skewered the skitterdark. He nodded assent as the rest of the party indicated a rest period.
"I can see through that dark with no issue. I'll keep a watch." He said as he took up position that would keep a good eye on the stairwell and Anarya.
Clebsch GM |
If Anarya's header is correct, she still has 5 channel energies, which would heal 10d6 for everyone. I expect she will be happy to provide what healing she can before everyone sleeps. As for the light,
as I interpret it, the light of a 2nd level Continual Flame spell cancels the dark of a 2nd level Darkness spell. Where they overlap,
any other light source will cast the normal amount of light, so as long as someone near Avelina has light, it will illuminate where the spells overlap.
Raine a'Thiel |
Raine appeared initially baffled at the suggestion that they stop and rest in the middle of their storming raid. "....thought this was a 'break down the doors and don't stop 'til we've dropped 'em all' sort of thing," she said with a blink. "Since we were doing that whole 'narrow window of the distracting attack' and all."
However, her misgivings faded somewhat when it was explained that Irabeth and the mongerfolk could hold the hall. Raine chewed on her lower lip, shrugged, and nodded. "Won't question the sense of those in charge, then," she said laconically. Her heart itched with the urge to keep going, to bathe more arrows in demonic blood, but she slowly lowered her bow to her side. The redhead took stock of the arrows she'd spent already in the struggle.
"There's things still moving about up-top. Can hear them whispering. Guess we'll have to hope they don't teleport in or out. Any of you all that can see in that blasted darkness-- oh, well, your sword's handy there, ain't it, Your Majesty. Let's clear out those caltrops so we aren't running on them when we gotta go that way next. We'll definitely have to post watch if people really intend on shutting their eyes."
Can Raine tell if there's a shut door between us and the people above (i.e., one at the top of the stairs, etc?) I grasp that as the GM you're signaling we can rest here, but in-character that seems a really unlikely decision for Raine at least to make, if we have active presumed spellcasters (able to cast darkness) literally on the floor above us, without her knowing if there's even a shuttable door in the way. I'm not arguing it OOCly, I'm just trying to find an IC reason why Raine would feel it wasn't sort of suicidal to zonk out for an eight-hour sleep with active demons or cultists less than twenty feet away.

Though she had to bang her hands against the wand several times--as though the percussion would somehow loosen the magic--she finally managed to fully heal Karas and Ellena.
"Certainly, I would prefer to carry on as well, particularly since the Providence of the Inheritor has seen fit to provide us with a way to turn back the darkness." She sighed and sheathed her sword. "But I shall defer to the chain of command, as the Inheritor would have of me." The reticence in her voice suggested that such deferrence would be itself deferred, should the consensus of her companions prove otherwise.
Karas Argentus |
As Karas sat in fatigued haze, his thoughts drifted back to the manor. The precious treasure found and the future ahead.
If only you could see me now. Rushing headlong into a nest of Demon worshipers with Crusaders of all people! Heh I'm sure you would be proud. Of course if I don't make it through this we can talk about that very thing!
He smirked and scoffed a second as he looked around. The haze settling off and becoming more aware of his surroundings his gaze landed, as it had been the last few weeks, on Anarya as she tended the wounded.
Of course, there are many things left to live for and futures to hope for. You'll understand if I don't plan on dying here today. Who knows? What would the family think of a Tiefling and Aasimar raising your daughter? We would be the strangest of families!
As his mind drifted into a picturesque future, his cheeks stained red again as he looked away from the angel and down. Unable to contain his smile.
"If everyone wants to press on I can try to clear out those caltrops. I just needed a breather."
Tauni "Rabbit" Desba |
"Not so quick, Karas. There might be someone, or something, up there waiting for someone to do just that. I've got a smoke stick we can throw up there to give us some cover. Did we pass anything we could use to bridge past the caltrops? A plank or something we can lay on the stairs and run up so we don't have to worry about ruining our boots." She thinks back to what they've passed so far in their assault. "A table, maybe? Or a shelf? Fifteen feet or so should do it, I think."
Tauni tried to lose herself in solving the problem. She struggled to concentrate, though. It seems like a lifetime ago that this all started, but she hasn't had a chance to reflect, to mourn.
Everyone she knew before the fall of the city was gone. Everyone except Cobblepaw. Was there even a single Abadaran left in the region other than her? For a moment, it felt like the weight of the world was on her shoulders, and it was wearing. For a moment, she thought she might pass out from the wave of fatigue, but she fought it off.
They need me, she told herself. I can make a difference. I can grieve later.
Avelina of House Galfrey |
Avelina knelt and recited a prayer to Iomedae, one calling upon Her Lesson of Persistence, demonstrated with her Fifth Act. As one might guess from Avelina's earlier sermon, this Act was Avelina's favorite. She found such power in the thought of this woman that could persist against evil even her greatest hope, her Goddess, had be tossed at her feet like refuse. Avelina's Lord Father and Mother had been her God and Goddess, all-powerful and all-knowing. She had never even seen them wounded until that day. All Avelina could do then was cry, cry and read.
She took the book of war prayers from her bag. The one at home in her room is bound with finer, tougher leather, and the back cover was stained with a sanguine red that she refused to clean away. Mother had left the bookmark, a strip of red silk, on the chapter discussing the Fifth Act. Avelina took it as a sign.
Avelina also took as a sign that such memories would return now, a Movement of Divine Providence. She packed away her book and stood.
"On second thought, why yes, I should very much like to continue onward. These demonic obscenities must be purged from this land before they can rally any greater strength. Let us heed the wise counsel of our dear Tauni and then proceed on."
Raine a'Thiel |
Raine paced as everyone took stock of the battle thus far, and weighed their condition.... as Avelina took time to pray. The archer felt only a simmering rage, kept in check by the presence of Irabeth not far away, by her knowledge that rushing ahead would only get herself killed.... her new comrades, too.
It felt strange, to have other lives to weigh with her own in the field. Since Kenabres had fallen, Raine had gotten used to going on her own missions, without another to watch her back, with no promise that even her body would get returned to her father if she screwed up.
And she'd always assumed someday, she would. Someday there'd just be too many demons, or they'd get the drop on her, or cultists would ambush her... Someday, she wouldn't come back to her father. She'd go on, to join the fallen, to whatever heavens waited fallen Crusaders... if the gods weren't already full up, with so many dead.
It wasn't that she wasn't being useful, bringing back information to the resistance. It had just seemed like there wasn't any real point, and that the closest thing she had to a long-term goal was to take down as many demons with her when she inevitably failed.
As Raine chafed with impatience over the possible delay, she couldn't help but observe that her new comrades didn't seem to display her own anger. They were determined, and she'd seen that in battle, now, but... it seemed they.... were fighting for something more, than just to kill as many demons as possible.
Maybe they were fighting for a tomorrow.
Raine stood still a moment, fingers tight on her bow, then cleared her throat. "I say we press on if we can, aye. I'm ready to keep fighting. Don't like the idea of them getting their feet back under them. But I guess we have to do this smart, and if that means resting, so be it.
"As for the caltrops, I've got a blanket with me. Unroll it, toss it to cover as much of the stairs as it'll cover, haul it back-- all those little sharp pointies will get dragged with it, right? Some of 'em anyway."
I forgot I also have an ioun torch ioun stone, which has a continual flame on it as well, if the darkness we're facing is only 2nd level. Just remembered it on my sheet when I went to check for things to help with the caltrops.
Ellena Lovain |
Ellena didn’t rise immediately after being healed. She continued to breathe deeply. ”Thanks as always, milady,” Ellena nods to Avelina
While the others discussed moving on, the knight shut her eyes and breathed deeply taking in the conversation. Laying out plans wasn’t her strength...when the others made the plan she’d carry it out, just as she did for her friends in the Everbright Crusaders just a few months ago. The work this group was doing just felt more important, however. Saving what was left of the town was the her only focus now.
As the group made their decision, she put her helm back on and rose to her feet. ”Let’s get rid of the caltrops and go introduce ourselves to the remaining thugs.”

"And so, after the briefest of rest, the heroes resolved to push on, to deal with those guarding the approach to the second floor of the Gray Garrison." The storyteller resumed the story after a break. He had not lost any listeners. Some of the children who may have fallen asleep before hearing the outcome of the previous battle could be seen getting a quick summary from some of the other children, with a few disagreements spicing up the retelling. The old man smiled, knowing this was the way of storytelling.
"The heroes needed to get up a small staircase and the enemy was at the top and they knew they were there. That meant they would be vulnerable to attack before they could engage the enemy. The enemy had some magic they could throw at them as well, darkening the room, but the forces of light were not without their own magic to counter it. So they planned their next move carefully."
Clebsch GM |
So first, read up on how caltrops work. I'm going to assume everybody has shoes on. When you get to a position where you can see, I'll describe what squares have caltrops in them. I'll say someone could clear a 5-foot square of caltrops by spending a full round action (or if there was movement up to the square, two consecutive rounds of standard actions after which movement can resume). Or you can risk stepping on them by moving through the square at full speed (movement stops if a caltrop is stepped on) or move through the affected squares as if moving through difficult terrain (2 squares of movement for each 5-foot square with no risk of injury).
Position yourselves where you want to be when initiative is rolled. If you want to try to take them by surprise, roll stealth checks. Indicate any buffs you want to have in place. I'll roll initiative and you can take it from there. The darkness spell only lasts 2 minutes and so is gone by the time you are ready to resume.
We haven't heard from Anarya for a while, so I'll 'bot her unless we hear from her before then. I assume she will use another charge of bless and then use a charge of the spiritual weapon wand once the battle has begun unless another spell would be more beneficial.
In order to see what is on the stairs, what is at the top of the stairs, and whether or not the stairwell is open to the next floor, someone will have to get to one of the squares along the north wall and west of the steps. If someone wants to try to peek up the stairs without being observed, position yourself there, and I'll describe what you see after all the stealth rolls have been made.

Tauni "Rabbit" Desba |
Tauni pulled out a smoke stick, ready to ignite it. She watched and listened as Karas advanced to deal with the caltrops.
Ready an action to 5' step behind Karas and throw the smoke stick at the top of the stairs if Tauni thinks he's being targeted (voices of alarm from above, Karas suddenly looking up, etc.). Let me know if that is too vague of circumstances for the readied action.
Ellena Lovain |
Ellena waited for the all clear, seeing the tiefling trying to use stealth. She was unsure how to avoid those nasty caltrops, so she was determined to let the others have a crack at them. Her support would be necessary soon enough.

I'm assuming the act of Karas going up to look up the stairs is done under cover of darkness, with Tauni keeping a hand on Karas to guide her through the darkness. I'm also assuming others have light sources active but they are under wraps until needed. So no one can see what is going on initially. Since Irabeth has darkvision, she stands behind the group and whispers what she sees.
Tauni: If you are hoping to intervene should someone try to attack Karas during the surprise round, lighting and throwing a smokestick is not likely to do it. Even using a tindertwig or a cantrip, it will be a standard action to light the smoke stick and then a second standard action to throw it. If you want to designate a different ready action, Tauni does detect sounds from above that sound like people readying weapons or other actions in preparation for combat. If she wants to step and do something, she has just a standard action. Also, what light source does she have? The area is in natural darkness. She could have a light spell on something that is currently covered up. It's a free action to uncover it, if so. To see what Karas sees, read his spoiler.
Raine a'Thiel |
Raine felt her way along the wall to the base of the stairs. If Irabeth was willing to move with her and be her immediate eyes, she was more than willing to accept the commander's vision. She kept one hand tightly clamped over her ioun stone so as not to immediately blow Karas's attempt at sneaking. Her other hand held her bow. Raine tried to step as quietly as she could.

Her halo dimmed to avoid attracting attention, Anarya moved to the base of the stairs, ready to provide support with her magic. She again imbued Raine with a bit of divine guidance.
Anarya doesn't know if there are any enemies spotted yet, but once she does she can levitate someone straight up to that balcony overhead, skipping the stairs.
Karas Argentus |
for those unable to see in the dark comes an unceremonious, "Ah hells."

Clebsch GM |
A crossbow bolt hit Karas square in the chest, and fell to the steps, unable to penetrate his armor.
Irabeth says to those holding back, "Battle's started. Crossbow bolt from top of stairs."
Karas is up, followed by Anarya. If Karas wants to accept Anarya's offer of levitation, he only needs to delay until Anarya can activate her scale to trigger the levitation effect. The spell moves one 20' per round, which would put Karas at the same level as the 2nd floor by the end of his turn.
Because Karas happened to be at the bottom of the initiative order, everyone else except Anarya is delaying, so anyone who wants to act can also do so before any of the NPCs.

Anarya placed a hand on the silver scale from Terendelev and activated the magic while directing it to Karas. Karas moved forward five feet onto the first step and then began to rise as if supported by a pillar of smoke or fog. He rose 20 feet from which he could see the enemies ready to attack.
They were prepared to shower the party with splash attacks as they climbed the stairs, but seeing Karas rise into their midst, they panicked and threw at him even though it endangered some of their own who were close enough to catch splash damage. One threw an acid flask, but it fell down and landed on the stairs instead. Another throws some kind of powder which hits Karas but fails to do more than make a few spots itch a bit. Two of the rogues, however, were affected by the 'splash' and they started to scratch where the powder hit their skin. A third fired a crossbow a him, but went into the backpack of one of the rogues between Karas and the archer.
Everyone hears combat in the floor above. A flask of liquid drops to the stairs and shatters. The sizzles a bit where it lands.
No one at the bottom of the steps can see anything that is happening higher up because the levitation fog blocks light.
Raine is next.
Karas can peek behind the squares blocking view of the 2nd floor landing. Others can look once they have moved up to the top of the stairs.
Raine a'Thiel |
Free action: reveal my ioun torch to light things up
Raine heard Karas swear, but with nothing further to go on other than Irabeth's words that the battle had started, felt she had no choice but to light things up. She uncupped the little stone and it glowed with a bright light, illuminating the stairwell-- and showing Raine a column of fog directly before her.
"What the--!" The redheaded woman blinked in bemusement. She had no prior experience of the scales of Terendelev-- or that they could create such an effect. She looked up agog to see Karas floating on top of the column of smoke.
"...is that something he can just.... do?" she called out, bemused, to her colleagues. Shaking her head, Raine cautiously moved into the smoke until she could see the stair patch ahead of her, and stepped carefully amid the caltrops.
Now that she could see the enemy, she felt back in her element. Smoothly, the daughter of the Crusades nocked and arrow and loosed it at the goblin at the top of the stairwell.

Ellena Lovain |
Could someone levitate me up in the next round or two?]
Clebsch GM |
Raine's arrow hits the goblin but its armor keeps it from penetrating.
Last chance for Ellena or Avelina to come out of delay and act. You can move up the stairs, provided you count the squares with the caltrops as difficult terrain. Ellena could get up just behind Raine with a double move and move forward on her next move action, which could get her in range of the archer at the top of the stairs. Or Avelina could get behind Raine and cast a spell at the goblin.
Raine can look behind the covers on the map of the second floor landing (right side of the map).
If you want Anarya to levitate you, she'll have to wait until Karas has moved off the spell's support. This might take some time, since the spell will have to be dismissed (a standard action) and then activated on a new target (another standard action).
Also, if you think you'll need their help, you can call on Irabeth and the mongrel folk rangers to advance and help with the fight. It is one of your rewards for helping the mongrel folk reconcile with the crusaders.
Something for Karas to think about:
A levitating creature that attacks with a melee or ranged weapon finds itself increasingly unstable; the first attack has a -1 penalty on attack rolls, the second -2, and so on, to a maximum penalty of -5. A full round spent stabilizing allows the creature to begin again at -1.
So Karas needs to get on solid floor to avoid this. He can push against the wall to move himself horizontally. I'll allow Anarya to dismiss the spell in coordination with Karas indicates he's ready to lose the effect.
Ellena Lovain |
OK, I’ll double move then, picking my way through the caltrops, treating them as difficult terrain.
Clebsch GM |
It will take 30 feet just to get to the square behind Raine on the steps. So Ellena won't have enough movement to move past Raine this round. She can get to the top of the steps with a single move action next round if the square is unoccupied. I'm working from my iPad so I can't move her icon just now.
Ellena double-timed her way into the hall and around to the bottom of the steps. As she did so, Anarya's halo glowed to provide light, revealing the pillar of fog supporting Karas. Anarya warned as she started into the fog that Raine was on the other side. Ellena could see Raine firing arrows up the stairs in front of her as she prepared to move past he after her next shot.
So Ellena is in the fog but she can see out and can be seen. She has cover and ranged attacks on her will have a 20% miss chance.
