No spandex, thank you. We may not even need costumes (I'm honestly on both sides of the issue). Either way, it'd be good to stay to the source material and try to keep it Noir-esque.

I know I said I'd keep it short, but this is a lot of discussion points. So... sorrynotsorry?

WHAT IS OUR SHARED GOAL? - Fight crime where the police can't or won't.
WHO OR WHAT BROUGHT US TOGETHER? - A desire to fight the Rampant Crime in the City. I think Leighton and Wade may have gathered the group to combat criminal Mythoi.
WHY DO WE WORK TOGETHER? WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER CONTRIBUTE TO THE CAUSE? Strength in numbers as Luke says. Being able to lean on each others skills and strengths to cover our weaknesses.

WHERE DO WE MEET? WHERE DO WE COLLECT OUR EVIDENCE OR PREPARE FOR ACTION? - This was one that I kept putting back on the shelf every time the thought came into my mind. I agree that a police office is too conspicuous, if Leighton hires the crew on as consultants that might work, but it doesn't feel permanent. Not a place to hang out and keep evidence. Unless... maybe Wade's unit deals with the weird s$#$ that no other cop wants to deal with a la Special Investigations in The Dresden Files. It's probably cramped, understaffed, and under-equipped, but they have to deal with most of the cases involved with the Mist. I like the idea of Wade's fox-spirit being a mischievous guide into the world of the Mist, but that's up to Wade to decide. I don't think I could have Leighton be in the Specials unit because it seems like the type of thing that would be a career dead-end, and he's trying to climb the totem pole.

A home? Maybe, but the problem with that is that it will probably be either an apartment or similar sized, or not within the city limits. Frederick seems like he wouldn't invite Luke into his home (then again, he may relish in the chance to show off his collection; Indeed I have been writing this post for too long, Freddy already said he'd readily volunteer), and Luke strikes me as someone who would have a bachelor pad in the City as well as his family's estate outside the city. A home seems more conspicuous as well. Strange people walking in and out of your neighbors house at odd hours? Seems kind of weird. (Zenna kind of ninja'd me while I was writing this post. Maybe Zenna's place would work, but wouldn't she have a condo at best? Being a celebrity is nice and everything, but space is at a premium in the City)

A warehouse by the docks? It's been done before but it seems like a cool hideout location.

An abandoned factory building? I like the implication that industry is crumbling in the City. Some other abandoned building would be interesting for the same reason.

A bar? Some place that's out of the way and cozy, seems like a sweet Noir trope to cash in on. It doesn't offer space to deposit evidence or equipment, but it's a neutral place for the group to kick their feet up. In the same vein a lounge, club, cafe, diner or restaurant may be appropriate.

You know how for the Olympics, countries will make a whole Olympic village for the athletes and then never use the land for anything afterwards? It's out of the way, but no one would ever come looking.

Maybe a rented office suite? Or the back room of a business whose owner backs us up?

Other ideas?

I don't think the meeting place needs to be set in stone if we don't want it to be, but we should clarify that as a feature of our Crew if that's the case.

WHAT SORT OF RESOURCES DO WE HAVE AT OUR DISPOSAL? - Like Luke mentioned, we have access to Police stuff, hospital, social security firm. But we also have access to people in high places: Zenna is a celebrity, Luke was born to Old Money, Leighton is involved in City politics. This is not going to be a story about people struggling for money.

On the flip side, we don't actually have a whole lot of access to the seedy underbelly of the City.

Power Tag brainstorm (I'm just throwing ideas out here, some of them are from the book, say if something inspires you)
WHERE DO YOU MEET, WORK, REST, OR PREPARE FOR ACTION? Average Joe's Pub, The Red Door Lounge, Warehouse on the Abandoned Wharf, Docks Warehouse, Abandoned Factory, Copper Canyon Coffee Co., Amy's Diner, Olympic Village Hideout, Zenna's place, Stern's Old Quarter Home, Special Investigations office, Basement office, used bookstore office,

HOW DO YOU HELP, ASSIST, OR SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER? Watch each other's back, favor for a favor, tactical coordination, shoulder to cry on, snap out of it, highly recommended

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED TO DO WELL TOGETHER? Storm the target, good-cop bad-cop, blow off steam, tailing and eavesdropping, putting together clues

Weakness Tag brainstorm
WHAT PLACES OR SITUATIONS DO YOU FIND TOUGH TO HANDLE? - No in with criminals, have to skirt around police, the Mist is still foreign, crowds too conspicuous, suspicious friends

WHAT IS OUR SHARED GOAL?

I think dealing with supernatural threats to the city and keeping our identities hidden should be our primary goal.

WHO OR WHAT BROUGHT US TOGETHER?

So my idea for this is that we all arrived to deal with the same "thing" at the same time and ended up working with each other to deal with the situation.

WHERE DO WE MEET? WHERE DO WE COLLECT OUR EVIDENCE OR PREPARE FOR ACTION?

In my mind, I like the idea of us renting space ala fight club, under a bar where we meet. We can't store anything there, but we can plan things.

As for Power Tags, please discuss the following three questions:

WHERE DO YOU MEET, WORK, REST, OR PREPARE FOR ACTION? Quiet basement, backroom at an olive garden, Dingy apartment.

HOW DO YOU HELP, ASSIST, OR SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER? teamwork makes the dream work, burdens shared lessened.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED TO DO WELL TOGETHER? Take back the night, We bump back, a new dawn
(note: these should be able to be invoked by anyone in the group)

And finally, a weakness tag:
WHAT PLACES OR SITUATIONS DO YOU FIND TOUGH TO HANDLE? subtle manipulation, political power, broad daylight

Status:

I like the idea of Special Investigations like in Dresden Files - Wade might have ended up there because he busted the "wrong" person so the higher-ups sent him there as a "promotion".

Another idea for a place to meet:
Has anyone seen Sleepy Hollow? The TV series, not the movie. They use half-abandoned part of the police building, where the police keeps archived documents and historical records. It also has all sorts of secret tunnels and compartments. Our department might have such part.

Tags:
Tough to handle situations - definitely the criminals (we have to cops and Wade specifically is infamous in those circles) and the police (we'll have to evade questions, forge reports, and other fun stuff).

Assisting each other - favor for a favor sounds interesting. After all, we're not exactly altruists. While we do pursue mostly the same goals (fighting crime police can't handle, keeping our identities secret, etc.), we do have our own stuff to worry about.

@Vrog/Donovan
Shared goal? - Mostly aligns with others opinions.

Who or what brought us together? - This is quite a bit different, but maybe we could work something in together. I personally didn't want there to be that much of a contrivance, unless it was central to the game/story/plot. (i.e. the series focused on why we all happened to meet at the same moment and what was so special about the five of us)

I was thinking more that our group would have been assembled piecemeal like the Avengers or the Justice League, with Wade Walton being the organizer/recruiter (whether he wants to lead is another question entirely).

A compromise could be that Wade had scoped all of us out (with direction from his visions) and left subtle hints or otherwise manipulated all of us into taking down the same bad guy at the same time but independently of one another.

Where do we meet - A basement hideout sounds neat actually. I was thinking of something like that too as a possibility. Kind of want to use a made up place name and avoid using real-world chains. A tag could be Basement Hideout, Jeff's Bar, O'neal's, The Garrison's Warroom, the Backroom at Phillip's Pub, or some other interesting place name.

Tags - Only thing I want to say about the tags is the weakness tags don't really reflect the whole group very well. Two or three of our members actually have some political clout and at least two of our members are good at subtle manipulation. Broad Daylight works if we take it to mean that the group needs to avoid being seen doing vigilante-work in Broad Daylight, which is thematically appropriate. More Batman less Superman

@Wade Walton

Great! I'm glad it sounds good to you.

I actually really like that idea for the meeting place. We can call it the Records Closet or something along those lines.

Tags:

Tough Situations - Police is starting to sound like a good option for an interesting story. Skirting Around Police or Police Suspicion could be good tags. Alternatively, Suspicious Friends, Social Life Intrusions, or Work Life Intrusions could include some of the same things and be a bit broader and more interesting.

Assisting each other - I'm not a hundred percent on that interpretation, we are altruists in a way. We're risking our lives and livelihoods, even breaking the law to do the good of fighting evil. That said, it is one interpretation that was going through my mind, as we all do have our daily lives to go back to, and maybe many of our characters aren't willing to admit how selfish their motivations for vigilante-ing are. That and maybe we don't trust the others in our group fully, which would make sense.

@Donovan & Luke: Did DM Default not feel the need to go over your tags with you? I don't want to sound accusatory or anything, they're just the same as they were before.

Like I said, I'm still working out what I want to do with my tags. Stupid flu kept me from doing so.

Got it, just checking.

December 26th Update

@Leighton Wise
I've messaged every potential player about adjusting tags and such. I understand that some folks may have irl issues to work through or are keeping them busy.

Also, Luke owns the book himself so I'm trusting him to know what he's doing.

If some tags becomes issues in play, we'll sort them out. I believe this is the first game of City of Mist that we are all participating in so we'll all be learning

I enjoy the potential hideout ideas, and like the specific idea of a backroom or basement in a public store/building/etc.

As for Wade being the lead to gathering you all, I'd rather move away from that idea. Mainly because there should be an overarching mystery or issue that is tying your character to stay committed to the crew itself. Not that that can't happen if you're recruited, but I prefer your group coming together naturally in a way.

As for tags, it seems that most of you agree that you are skilled at handling confrontation. Also authority and police seem to be coming up a lot.

Most of the suggested weakness seem to fit well.

Try to come up with a consensus, and after I finish at the job fair in a couple days, I'll post the first gameplay post.

Female Human: Transcended Inactive

Okay, so gathering everyone's answers together to see if we have some sort of consensus:

Quote:
WHAT IS OUR SHARED GOAL?

Keeping the city safe, investigating crimes?

Fight crime where the police can't or won't.
dealing with supernatural threats to the city and keeping our identities hidden

These seem pretty similar. Maybe "Investigating and Neutralizing Supernatural Threats to the City" is a good main goal? The identity thing could also be part of it... Like Anonymously Investigating...??

Quote:
WHO OR WHAT BROUGHT US TOGETHER?

I was thinking Wade or Leighton, maybe both as part of the police.

A desire to fight the Rampant Crime in the City. I think Leighton and Wade may have gathered the group to combat criminal Mythoi.
So my idea for this is that we all arrived to deal with the same "thing" at the same time and ended up working with each other to deal with the situation.

I think these can also work together (minus the Wade as ringleader part that DMD had a concern about). How about "A desire to fight crime/protect citizens" and the way is that we all heard about the same large ongoing disaster and met each other while trying to solve the problem?

Quote:
WHY DO WE WORK TOGETHER? WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER CONTRIBUTE TO THE CAUSE?

We probably recognize the safety in numbers, and realize our singular mythos cannot take on the mysteries of the city?

Strength in numbers as Luke says. Being able to lean on each others skills and strengths to cover our weaknesses.

So "Safety and Strength in Numbers"?

Quote:
WHERE DO WE MEET? WHERE DO WE COLLECT OUR EVIDENCE OR PREPARE FOR ACTION?

A police office

One of the crew's homes
Old bookstore
Diner
A warehouse by the docks?
An abandoned factory building?
A bar?
Lounge, club, cafe, diner or restaurant.
Abandoned Olympic village
Maybe a rented office suite?
Or the back room of a business whose owner backs us up?
Under a bar
half-abandoned part of the police building

Ha ha. These are very different, but what about an abandoned subway platform that has exits up to a bar, a bookstore, and the basement of the police station? (or near those places) The subway thing allows us to enter at disparate places and gives us multiple exits. I know it is kind of new, but it also incorporates many ideas. ??

Quote:
WHAT SORT OF RESOURCES DO WE HAVE AT OUR DISPOSAL?

A lot, actually. We have access to the police resources, some ability to use a hospital, and Donovan works at a social security firm.

Like Luke mentioned, we have access to Police stuff, hospital, social security firm. But we also have access to people in high places: Zenna is a celebrity, Luke was born to Old Money, Leighton is involved in City politics. This is not going to be a story about people struggling for money. (On the flip side, we don't actually have a whole lot of access to the seedy underbelly of the City.)

Police, Medical, Political, but not Criminal?

Quote:

As for Power Tags, please discuss the following three questions:

WHERE DO YOU MEET, WORK, REST, OR PREPARE FOR ACTION?

This is basically the same question as above, but just as a tag, so... Abandoned Subway Platform?

Quote:
HOW DO YOU HELP, ASSIST, OR SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER?

Watch each other's back

favor for a favor
tactical coordination
shoulder to cry on
snap out of it
highly recommended
teamwork makes the dream work
burdens shared lessened.

Different ideas here as well. I think the one talked about the most was favor for a favor, if we want to go with that. I like watch each other's back and burdens shared are lessened, but I don't have the books, so I don't know the implications of all of it, so happy to go with whatever you guys choose.

Quote:

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED TO DO WELL TOGETHER?

(note: these should be able to be invoked by anyone in the group)

Storm the target

good-cop bad-cop
blow off steam
tailing and eavesdropping
putting together clues
Take back the night
We bump back
a new dawn

Different again, but my favorite is take back the night. Are we supposed to just choose one? They all seem pretty good, and again, you guys will know the implications better.

Quote:

And finally, a weakness tag:

WHAT PLACES OR SITUATIONS DO YOU FIND TOUGH TO HANDLE?

No in with criminals

have to skirt around police
the Mist is still foreign
crowds too conspicuous
suspicious friends
subtle manipulation
political power
broad daylight
definitely the criminals (we have to cops and Wade specifically is infamous in those circles) and the police (we'll have to evade questions, forge reports, and other fun stuff).

Very different, but a lot of talk about cops and criminals. The idea of not being able to do things openly (broad daylight?) is also a great one.

Ok got it. So we're moving away from Wade being the guiding hand, so I guess we'll just leave the inciting event open for now? I can't really think of anything that appeals to me right now.

Zenna's got a good summary right now, I'll just give my opinion on those, and we can move forward.

Quote:

Sounds good to me. "Investigating and neutralizing supernatural threats to the City." I think we can leave the anonymity part implicit.

Quote:

"We were brought together by a desire to fight crime."

Seems a little bland, but otherwise fine. I'd like something more specific and flavorful, but I'm a little out of ideas right now.

Something like, "We were brought together while investigating the strange murder of Alfons Alexopoulos."

Quote:
WHY DO WE WORK TOGETHER? WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER CONTRIBUTE TO THE CAUSE?

So "Safety and Strength in Numbers"?

Seems good to me. Though I'm not sure if it needs more elaboration or not...

Thanks for cataloging everything. I like the idea of a secret subway entrance. Were you thinking of the secret entrance leading to all three places? I'm thinking that might be too much to keep track of right off the bat.

I like the idea of our establishment's hideout being owned by an NPC Rift like Morgan Le Fay. Maybe the Rift of Hestia? Her restaurant/pub could be in an older and sketchy part of town that's recently seen hard times with the downturn of the economy and corruption. She's a struggling incarnation of warmth in a City with very little of it. The old part of town, would be the justification for why it's connected to an abandoned subway platform.

Good summation, don't think I have anything to add.

Quote:

"Mel's Fireside Restaurant and Bar" hmm too long, doesn't have the implication of secret hideouts.

"Basement of Mel's"

You don't really need the book. The book just has the guiding questions that DMD has been shooting at us. Just take the tags and interpret them in ways that make sense.

I like watch each other's back and I'm coming around to favor for a favor.

Quote:

The thing about "take back the night" is that I think its a bit too broad. For tags, we need to think about how we would invoke them, and I'm having a little trouble. Like what does "take back the night" mean for us?

I'll try a little brainstorm, and I am also curious to know what everyone else was thinking.

Take back the night sounds like taking down bad guys in the middle of the night. That's too broad on its own. Specifically hiding in the dark? What else... As something we do together... dunno. I'm drawing a blank.

WHAT PLACES OR SITUATIONS DO YOU FIND TOUGH TO HANDLE?

I think "broad daylight" is a good catch all weakness for our crew. I think specifically while acting in the capacity of vigilantes, but it makes sense.

December 26th Update

So some discussion, remember that the first set of questions is just to help flesh out why your guys stay with each other and don't have a mechanical aspect. We'll just do a quick vote and get things settled. If folks don't think its meshing, we can change it later.

2. Old Bookstore
3. Diner

1. Take back the night (To me, "take back the night" means making the night safe for people to walk around again rather than allowing criminals or bad guys to rule it, and forcing others to stay at home or having to carry mace or whatever. There have been several women's marches with this theme, which is why that is what springs to my mind, but if it doesn't have that same meaning for everyone, I get it.)

Maybe I swap "Take back the night" in for #3? I like the sentiment behind it, but I'm still not sure how we don't just invoke it on every single action we take on mission.

And finally, a weakness tag:
WHAT PLACES OR SITUATIONS DO YOU FIND TOUGH TO HANDLE?

It also just occurred to me that we might use "Taking Back the Night" as our crew theme title? It feels good. About as good as using a team name like "The Defenders" for the them title.

I think for most of our characters, its important for them to retake the City rather than inflate their egos with superhero personae. More Jessica Jones less Spider Man.

So I did a tally of the votes. My evaluation counted first picks as stronger than second and third picks. Second and third picks were weighted equally, and used as tie breakers rather than anything else.

'WHERE DO YOU MEET, WORK, REST, OR PREPARE FOR ACTION?'

Abandoned subway platform that has exits up to a bar [2 first place, no second] and Abandoned subway platform [2 first place, 2 other] are almost tied, with abandoned subway platform coming out ahead. It seems like all of us want that Subway platform as part of our hideout. I had intended my vote to be the former, but I wrote it funny. If we count my vote then it will be An abandoned subway platform that has exits up to a bar with 3 first place votes.

'HOW DO YOU HELP, ASSIST, OR SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER?'

This was pretty unanimous. Everyone's first choice was Watch each other's backs.

'WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED TO DO WELL TOGETHER?'

Blow Off Steam takes the lead at [4 first place, 1 other].

'WHAT PLACES OR SITUATIONS DO YOU FIND TOUGH TO HANDLE?'

So I really didn't expect people were thinking of No in With Criminals [4 first place, 1 other] but it's by far the favorite here.

So I think the only thing we need to decide on is the Subway Platform tag. I actually voted both ways personally. I like the idea of being based in an NPC's establishment as well as having the freedom of the abandoned subway tunnels. But we could stick primarily to the subway platform rather than a specific establishment that's connected to the abandoned area.

Make your case for your favorite! Discuss! Argue!

Female Human: Transcended Inactive

Why don't we just say it is an old subway platform that has exits in or near a bar *and* a bookstore and a diner. That covers everyone's favorite or high alternate choices. Then we have the subway platform which everyone wants, and we can just develop ideas for these three places that are connected rather than fighting about which idea is best. Different characters probably have an affinity for different entrances, and that's okay.

Eh, I don't mind either way, it seems like a good idea. It seems pretty versatile for one tag, but I might be overestimating it. The idea that each character might have an affinity for a different entrance is also a neat idea.

An abandoned subway station was the hideout for the characters from the last season of Person of Interest too.

Alright, getting the first gameplay post up tonight. We'll figure out stuff as we play. I just ask for patience and communication for questions and ideas.

Should be a fun time.

December 26th Update

First gameplay post is up!

I'm going to be away in Japan for a week starting tomorrow. I probably won't be getting much posting in, so feel free to bot me if you need to move along

December 26th Update

Quick Question for the players. As your Mythos themes have questions that can be resolved, do you prefer if I supply the answer and present you with it when the time comes, we talk about the answer and find something we both like, or you want full control over what the answer to the mystery is (which is kinda weird given its a mystery, but we can work on it)?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Personally, I would prefer a combination of the first two options that you give (you deciding by yourself and us talking about it), but I would definitely disagree with the last option. I know that for at least one of my mysteries, I have an idea of what the answer could be, but you should still have the final decision. If nothing else, we could give suggestions about one of our mysteries and let you decide on the other.

I'm actually okay with you providing the answer for me, as I'm still trying to figure the system out and I yet feel comfortable enough to decide on something like that.

Female Human: Transcended Inactive

Agree with Fredrick.

Status:

I'm okay with you providing an answer. That's the point of the mystery, no?

Yeah, having no idea what the answer is makes it interesting. Luke may not like what he finds, and that's okay with me. Sometimes the "answer" to a question doesn't really have to be correct.

Posting this to all my games: Sorry for the lack of posting. For the second time this year, I got the flu, and the internet is out at my house right now (where it has been for the last two days). It should hopefully be resolved by Monday, and if not I'm going to switch ISPs. Please feel free to bot me until I am back up and running, and if I am running your game, I haven't forgotten about you!

Female Human: Transcended Inactive

My posting will be spotty between now and the 15th while I am moving. Packing up the truck today, and should be in Utah and able to post again consistently (hopefully) around then.

Please bot me as needed. I might be able to post in the interim, but just not sure when, and can't guarantee it. Sorry.

Had a bit of burnout folks, sorry for the temporary absence.

no worries.

Status:

I won't be able to post in the next few day, most probably until the 29th (I have thesis defense soon). Feel free to bot me.

Flying to Vancouver in the morning to help my brother. Not sure if I will have a chance to post from there or not, so might be essentially offline until the 4th. Apologies for the late notice. Please bot me as needed.

December 26th Update

So, a quick note about my limitations as a GM.

While I don't mind running simultaneous scenes, it does take a lot of effort and I also feel like I'm not able to commit enough writing to properly establish characters and atmosphere, making it a series of separate characters just posting single actions and me responding in kind.

That said, I don't mind doing it every now and then, but with two "split up and search for clues" already, I'm feeling a bit strained. You guys could really help me by trying to stick together for a bit, shore up the manpower and such. Plus, it let's your characters interact more.

And by all means, if the narrative pushes you to split up, such as a chase or a pressing situation, by all means, do so, just wanted to let you know what's going on in my end.

Sorry for not having posted in a while, I have been dealing with some things irl. Also, I haven't seen a particularly good point to interject recently.

December 26th Update

Right now Wade is the only one who's stated they're taking care of something. His scene will be ending shortly, after that, not sure who wants to take initiative.

I think once Wade has the case as his, we can help him start investigating...or at least I thought that was the plan.

Does anyone have any idea what to do next?

Female Human: Transcended Inactive

Not me. I probably should have followed those people sooner, but not sure what else to do now, except maybe more research or something.

I have something that might be an idea, but I don't think that Fredrick would think of it unless prompted by Luke informing us of his research session.

Sorry about this, but life...

I am moving to Texas next week, and won't be able to post for sure Monday-Thursday, and it just depends on what is going on whether I will be able to post the rest of the week. Hopefully will be back up and normal on Monday the 29th latest, since I start my new job that day, so things have to be resolved at least that much.

Please bot me as needed.

December 26th Update

So....I screwed up.

I've had this internal clue logic in my head that had most everything going in the right way, and then someone I knew pointed out an inconsistency in my logic. At first I thought they were wrong, but then....I realized they were right.

So, the following information is me sorta retconning what's happened. If you've had suspicions but things didn't make sense, or if you stumble onto what's going on because of this correction, well, that's on me.

Anyway, the correction is as follows.
Mark Sapataro would die to having his spine removed.
Tin-Tin would die to having her heart ripped out.

If the mystery still eludes you, that's fine. If this corrections sparks the answer in you, that's also fine.

So let's keep the game rolling!

So I am posting from work:

Apologies about not posting sooner, but I have been down internet wise for roughly a week, and will not have internet back up yet for a week or so.

This means that I haven't had internet for the last 4 days (as we had 4 days off at my work for the holiday).

It's been...an experience where I learned that I use the internet more than I thought I did.

With all of that being said, I will try to post from work as I can, but if I am in your game, please bot me as needed.

If I am running your game, please bear with me while I try to post when I can. Hopefully, sooner than better, but I want to be up front about this issue.

again, I apologize about the delay.

December 26th Update

Guys, I come with some sad news.

I've decided that given my recent technological setbacks and increase in IRL responsibilities, I'm going to be withdrawing from the Paizo site as a source of PbP posting. I've had a lot fun here, and learned a lot as well, but I can't create time and energy to update as often as I feel would be fair. It's a new semester, one of my last couple, and I don't the work is going to slow down.

Thanks for everything till now, and sorry for having to drop out with little notice. If you can find a GM to take over, that's fine by me, and as always I hope you all have as much fun as I have had on these boards.

Female Human: Transcended Inactive

Understandable. Real life is always the priority. Good luck with school and work.

Wow.

Thank you for your continued effort to run great games Default.
