Foreword: Hello, I'm DM Runge. Or at least that's what I call myself, for I am not much of a PbP-DM yet. Therefore, in the spirit of getting my feet wet on this scene, I'd like to run a few modules, starting with "Carrion Hill" by Richard Pett. This is the recruitment thread for that module, and below I present the rules and expectations for the game.

In the long run I hope to get to run and finish a few of Paizo's published Modules, one of my own small adventures, and perhaps even one of Paizo's published Adventure Paths – but that's still far into the future.

I'm looking for 4 characters for this module.

Prologue: A city where no city should be, a bastion of strangeness at the heart of nowhere, the city of Carrion Hill has long loomed over the surrounding swamps in eastern Ustalav, yet its rulers have shifted many times. Often enough that only a few sinister scholars and curious minds know the true nature of the hill's original inhabitants—vile and depraved cultists of the old gods. Yet this morning, a dreadful recrudescence rises from the depths of buried nightmare in the vaults below Carrion Hill. A monster stalks the twisted alleys of the city, spreading panic before it and leaving destruction in its wake. Can the Carrion Hill Horror be stopped?

You are members of, or hired by, the Chtonian Chroniclers, a special Pathfinder Society subdivision dealing with lore related to the Dark Tapestry, and have been assigned to Carrion Hill. Your task is to learn more about the strange monster, and take measures to prevent potential disaster, in case the monster is, in fact, connected to the Dark Tapestry.

Chtonian Chronicles:

The name of my small series of psuedo-realated games, sharing the same themes. As a new PbP-DM, I thought it prudent to pick a theme, start out small, and expand from there. In keeping with that line of thought, I've opted for games related to lovecraftian horror, the occult, and the Ustalav area of Golarion.

Therefore, I've invented a subdivision of the Pathfinder Society – The Chtonian Chroniclers – to act as a common hook and red thread throughout the series. As I run more games, I collect and arrange more and more official lore on Ustalav, the Dark Tapestry, and the Occult in general. This compillation is the Chtonian Chronicles.

Characters:

Characters begin play at 5th level and with 10.500 gp. Your most expensive item may have a value no higher than 5.250 gp.

Rules Material
Characters for this game can use the following material for character creation:

  • The Core Rulebook, The Advanced Player's Guide, The Advanced Class Guide, Ultimate Combat, Ultimate Magic and The Inner Sea World Guide.
  • In addition to the above, any one official book of your choice (The Occult Adventures Playtest is a valid choice).

Post the name of your book of choice along with your character.

Ability Scores
You can generate your character's ability scores using one of the following methods:

  • My custom array (16, 15, 14, 12, 11, 10)
  • Purchase method (20 points)

After assigning ability scores, apply your racial benefits to derive your starting ability score at 1st level. You cannot roll your ability scores.

Traits
You may choose 2 traits from your rules material. In addition, if you have access to them, you may choose a drawback as well – provided it has a meaningful impact on your character.

Details
Describe your character using the following as a loose guideline:

  • Name
  • Alignment
  • Appearance
  • Background
  • Personality

Complex characters are welcome, but take care not to expect disproportionate character development. After all, you're signing up for a 36 pages module.

Play:

There are a few expectations and details in regards to actual play, as lined out below.

Houserules
These rules are in effect and supersede the standard Pathfinder RPG rules.

  • Deadly Aim, Piranha Strike, and Power Attack have been removed. A feat that lists any of these as a prerequisite, loses that prerequisite.
  • A feat that lists Combat Expertise or Point-Blank Shot as a prerequisite, loses that prerequisite.
  • Options normally restricted to specific races, such as archetypes and feats, may be chosen by other races. Logical limitations still apply – no grippli cave snipers etc.
  • Characters with base attack bonus +1 or higher can choose to take a –1 penalty on all attack rolls and combat maneuver checks to gain a +2 bonus on all damage rolls. When your base attack bonus reaches +4, and every 4 points thereafter, the penalty increases by –1 and the bonus to damage increases by +2. You must choose to use this feat before making an attack roll, and its effects last until your next turn. The bonus damage does not apply to touch attacks or effects that do not deal hit point damage.
  • Commonplace guns. While still expensive and tricky to wield, early firearms are readily available. Instead of requiring the Exotic Weapon Proficiency feat, all firearms are martial weapons. Early firearms and their ammunition cost 25% of the amounts listed in Ultimate Combat, but advanced firearms and their ammunition are still rare and cost the full price to purchase or craft.

Posting
I could not hope to phrase it better than this, and thus I quote directly from the guide that inspired me to try PbP-DMing:

I'm going to hold you to the same standard as I hold myself: I expect you to post as often as is needed, adjusting to the pace of the group, as set by me. I plan to post at least once per day. When you do post, I expect you to push the action/story/RP or leave/pick up RP hooks. If our pacing changes to the point of negatively impacting your ability to keep up, I hope and expect that you will talk to me earlier rather than later. I promise to do the same if our positions are reversed.
—Painlord, Painlord's Guide to PbP GMing: Make Your World a Better Place

Formatting
Having identical character sheets is a good idea. Thus, characters should be presented using CampinCarl's Character Creation guide for Pathfinder PbP. For simplicity's sake.

Mapping
There will be an overview map of the city Carrion Hill hosted on Roll20, but individual scenes will not be mapped. Instead the scenes will be described in riveting detail, hopefully leaving the players with a sense of immersion that maps often fail to deliver, or even offer. To this end, I expect the players to be fairly descriptive of their actions as well.

Recruitment closes: Saturday, 30 May, 21:00 CEST
Party is announced: Sunday, 31 May, 21:00 CEST

If you have any questions, please post them here or send me a PM, and I will do my best to respond in a timely manner. I look forward to playing with you.

Rennai Barzanslag (dwarf ranger 5) would like to be considered for the party. Her profile is mostly completed - I still need to put together stats for my wolf companion and finish shopping, but the basics of the backstory and statistics are completed. I've taken Advanced Race Guide as my other piece of source material in order to use alternate racial characteristics.

This will be my first time playing PbP, and I've only been playing Pathfinder for about eight months, so I may have a bit of a learning curve. If you aren't ready to take on a newbie. I completely understand. If I make it through the learning curve all right, and if you'll have me, I'll be glad to continue into future adventures. Thanks, and good luck assembling the party!

EDIT: One more thing - my posts will be primarily between 2100 and 0900 my time (PST) due to my schedule. On my days off I may get posts in during other times of day.

Sounds fun. This chararacter was made for an Age of Worms Pbp, he should fit into this well. Just have to update skills and HP for level five.

Also, the traits meed to be redone in order to be compliant with your allowed sources, but that shouldn't be too hard.

Shadow Lodge

What are we able to utilize in the book we choose? For example, if I choose Inner Sea Magic, can I utilize the fame system in it? Or if I choose Unchained can I utilize variant multiclassing?

Ahh! I'm so flattered that you like my guide and that you're using it for your game! This kind of use is exactly what I wrote the guide for!

So with that out of the way, I'm extremely interested in submitting a character for this game. You articulate your goals very well and I like the concepts you're going for. I do have a few questions first though.

  • You say we have 10.500 gp to work with, and no item may cost more than 5.250 gp. I'm assuming you mean 10,500 gp and 5,250 gp, correct? I'm not sure if that was a typo or just a different way of writing numbers that I haven't leaned yet.
  • Are there any race restrictions?
  • You mention that drawbacks are allowed, if we take one do we get an extra trait to go with it?
  • As for advanced firearms in a commonplace setting, if I chose to play a gun-wielding character would I be able to start with an advanced firearm?
  • Since you're planning on running more than one game (albeit all tied together), would you expect us to use the same character for every game?

One of my hopes for running this was actually to get to play with other new people (both to PbP, but also Pathfinder in general, if I should be so lucky), so no worries there :)

He really should fit right in. He has the feel.

While your layout is good, will you be alright with redoing it to fit with mr. CampinCarl's?

Dylos wrote:

In short: Character-options based rules, such as Magic Schools or Variant Multiclassing are available to you. Rules that alter the game mechanics, such as the bulk of the Unchained rules, are not available.

I'll be honest, I hadn't given this a thought before you asked, so it's good that the question is posed this early :)

I saw your guide and the simplicity of it struck me as genius. Anyway, on to your questions:

#1 I should probably change that. I'm from Denmark, and we separate our numbers that way, I didn't even think about it (We use the signs opposite the way you do, which is really stupid actually). I mean that you have 10,500 gp and 5,250 gp respectively, just as you concluded.
#2 The restriction is the material you have access to. Therefore, if you wish to play something exotic like a grippli or a merfolk, you would have to choose a book, such as the ARG, that presents that as a character option.
#3 Yes, otherwise I'd say you're going in for a poor deal ^^
#4 You would still have to pay for it, but assuming you play a gunslinger, crafting ong would be relatively cheap. That's a yes – And one of the things I was sort of hoping for too.
#5 No. If people are interested in using the same character, that would certainly be allowed, but it would definitely not be a requirement.

I hope this answers your questions, and thank you all for your interest :)

#1 Understood.

#2 Ah, that makes sense, got it. Is there any chance you could give us a list of what races those books contain? Many players (myself included) actually just use the SRD which does not list the sources each race came from.

#3 Haha indeed! Although when I choose drawbacks I choose them to either reflect the character I built or to give me more ideas for one, so they're primarily chosen for flavor purposes instead of the power of having another trait. Thanks.

#4 Ah that brings up another question, if we took crafting skills and feats would you allow us to craft items before the game started? Your answer implies that we are allowed to, but I know some GMs don't like that because it can potentially double starting wealth.

#5 Understood.

#2 The material available to you before you choose a book of your own contains only the 7 core races.

#4 To an extent. I think I'll keep it simple and say that a single crafted item per crafting feat is fair game. In addition, I guess a correction to my original post would be "... Your most expensive item may have a market value no higher than 5,250 gp.". That way you can't blow your total wealth on a single, high-powered item.

Gotcha. That answers all of my questions for the time being, thanks! I'll be off the road in a few hours and I'll start thinking of a character to draw up.

P.S. Remember it's 5,250 gp or just 5250 gp, not 5.250 gp. Just trying to get you used to our number system!

Hi DM Runge, I'm guessing that when you say "one official book" you mean Paizo only...but I figured I'd ask because I've been reading Path of War by Dreamscarred Press recently and I think it has wonderful options for making martial characters who have more strategic (and flavorful) options.

Shadow Lodge

Can I pick Adventure Path #71 Reign of Winter Book 5 of 6: Rasputin Must Die as my additional resource? It features additional advanced firearms, as well as a fighter archetype that utilizes them. The advanced firearms in this book additionally are much cheaper and much more powerful then those in ultimate combat Likely due to the assumption that where PCs would acquire such a weapon is considered a guns everywhere area, so their prices should probably be x10.

Another choice to consider could be the Technology Guide, which would allow a character to utilize a chainshaw (it's pretty much the best tech that fits the limit of your market value).

I'd definitely want to continue with the same character if you'll have her. Seems to make sense.

Liberty's Edge

Hello, DM Runge. I am interested. I would like to pick the Advanced Race Guide as my additional source, and I'm curious whether you'd allow a dhampir character to trade off negative energy affinity (harmed by positive, healed by negative energy) by giving up an equal value (in race builder points) of benefits? A dhampir would seem to be nicely thematic for Ustalav, but the negative energy affinity has been a real pain for a PC in a party in my experience.

How in-depth are you looking to be? Is this a game more geared towards frequent, short posts and lots of combat, or towards lengthy posts with an emphasis on character development?

Rennai Barzanslag wrote:

Thank you! It's always nice to feel appreciated.

DM, I'm very happy with the thought you've put into your recruitment post--it says a lot. I just noticed that you're not planning to use combat maps, which makes me a bit nervous. In a low-crunch game like Dungeon World I find maps unnecessary, but in PbP Pathfinder, there are so many questions: (Am I close enough to get into flanking position? Is there anyone whose threatened squares I'd have to move through? Do I have a clear line to charge? Is there a foe within a 5' step, or do I need to take a move action?)

What's your strategy for dealing with those sorts of questions? We can just ask of course, but that slows things down as we wait for replies...or we can act on partial information (possibly including if/then blocks in our posts) but that often leads to convoluted posts and/or retconning as you explain that we posted something that couldn't work.

Long story short, I'm happy to learn of a way to do it that doesn't slow things down in PbP...but I find at least a super-simple sketch helps to improve the flow of games.

I have no problem reformatting.
Also, for the Official Book of my choice, I will pick the Advanced Class Origins player companion, since it has some nifty Investigator Talents I like. (do you need a link?)

Also, I'm assuming Point Blank Shot is still a valid feat, even if it isn't necessary as a prereq. It makes sense for the character, since he can only use the ranged study ability within 30 feet anyway.

Hey GM Runge, I started drawing up a dual pistol wielding gunslinger and I had a few more questions for you.

1) I know that you said you only wanted us crafting one item per crafting feat, but would you consider allowing me to crafty my own metal catridges? I'm using revolvers and their ammunition costs 15 gp per shot, which can get extremely expensive very quickly. I've crafted one pistol (saving me 2000 gp) but I was wondering if I could also have pre-game crafted metal catridges.

2) I've had a number of PbP and local GMs who like to use the houserule that not only does mithril armor go down a weight category, but mithril weapons do as well. Would you consider allowing that rule in? Apparently dual wielding pistols comes with large penalties because there are no "light" firearms.

The answer to these questions won't alter my build at all, will just effect the numbers a little. Thanks!

You guessed correctly :) I've read the Dreamscarred books, and while I'm a fan, I'm aiming to keep it simple for this, my first time DMing a PbP. I hope you'll understand. That said, in the future, once I have a clearer grasp on what goes on here on these forums, I'll open up to more options, even some of the more well regarded 3rd party.

Modern firearms are out—They assume the "guns everywhere" firearm rules (Pedantic, sorry. I was very tempted to say yes). The technology guide is acceptable, but you should probably know that I would be unlikely to pick a character wielding a chainsaw for this game. It doesn't fit the themes well :)

The pain should be somewhat alleviated by the fact that you start at level 5. I think the negative energy affinity should be part of the charm of playing a dhampir? Also, may I suggest the book "Blood of the night"?

As this is my first time DMing a PbP, I honestly don't have a clear overview of which constitutes what in this case. I'm hoping for a decent mix, I guess, maybe with a focus on the "feel" of the world: What the heroes are feeling, how they react to the horrifying things they see, how they cope, etc.

I hope this answers your question satisfactorily .

Hmm, being new I hadn't thought of this, and I can definitely see your point. My resolve on this is slightly shaken, and I will get back to you. For now, I can only answer that I'd run it a bit loose in regards to exact movement values.

I'll start working on maps, and if I can make it work, I will change my ways.

Great. I don't need a link, but feel free to cite sources, or link to them, on your character sheet :). Yes, Point-Blank Shot is still available.

1) I guess I have to alter the crafting rule to account only for worn/magical items, bullets/cartridges are ok.

2) I have to say no for now. In case something turns out broken, further alterations to the rules may skew my understanding of where it went wrong.

Thanks for the quick reply. I should have something to present to you tomorrow.

How are we determining HP? (Sorry if I missed that...)

Kevos Iola wrote:

Either "by the book" or using Society rules: Max at first, and then your choice of rolling or taking average (D6—3.5, D8—4.5, D10—5.5, D12—6.5).

HP: 4d10 ⇒ (10, 9, 4, 4) = 27

I don't know, that Barbarian archetype... You could dual wield a chainsaw and shotgun and go all Evil Dead 2 on those monsters...

HP: 4d8 ⇒ (8, 4, 4, 5) = 21
Slightly above average. I can deal.

Since you are reconsidering your stance, DM, I would like to say that I for one am fine with more narrative and less precise-positioning combat. Several of the questions gyrfalcon poses could just be settled to have default values "unless stated otherwise".

Can you get into flanking position? Unless the DM has said the enemy has holed up in a position that prevents flanking, you can assume that you can get into flanking position.

Threatened squares to move through? No, unless an enemy has explicitly positioned itself to shield another.

Clear line to charge? Yes, unless the environment is stated to be cluttered or otherwise complex.

5' step or move action? In a cramped environment former, in an open environment latter.

By setting default values that can be assumed unless the DM explicitly states otherwise, you can just handwave a lot of the questions that would arise from precise positioning.

I'm good either way, but there *are* ways to handwave things if one didn't want to deal with precise positioning. I just wanted to say that don't automatically assume you *have* to go for that if you don't feel like it.

Definitely interested. Let me see what I can pull up.

I'm thinking of an aasimar cleric of Desna. If i take blood of angels, would you allow me to roll for a variant ability? What about variant heritages? I'm thinking Azata-blooded (musetouched).

I doubt Rambo-style characters such as that would last very long against insanity inducing horrors ^^

This was my initial plan. I can see why one might have misgivings though, especially if you're used to maps. For now I've started sketching a bit, and if the maps turn out to be required, I will switch up my style :)

Both are available to you if you choose Blood of Angels as your book. You are free to roll, but is there a variant ability you are partial towards?

Reformatting complete, I think. Let me know if there are any glaring errors. Just shopping left.

Also, never really appreciated how much I used PFSRD for traits and equipment until I had to watch my source material so closely. APG doesn't have much for traits to choose from. I might change my official book, since Ultimate Equipment has half the gear I want. Is this choice a thing we are bound to throughout the Chronicles?

Dotting for interest. The mention of Lovecraftian themes make me feel like I should make an occult hero, so I'll probably look into that tonight.

Hello, hello!

A hunt for eldritch horrors in a crumbling city that should not be? Count me in! -- If you find me acceptable, that is. ^_^

You do realize your alias is spelled different from what you have in your personal info?

Shadow Lodge

@DM Runge, would you allow an Eldritch Guardian to qualify for the Improved Familiar feat? RAW he has no arcane caster level, but the ability says he treats his fighter level as his wizard level, and wizard is an arcane caster. I ask this because the easiest way to get a familiar that can utilize the fighter's feats is to have one that is relatively humanoid in shape, such as the Sprite.

Naturally if they could the character would have to select Familiar Folio as their additional official book, as that is where the archetype is presented.

Liberty's Edge

Do you want us to make an alias before acceptance, or can we just post stats in a spoiler?

I have the crunch for my gunslinger done, and I have a background and personality in mind. I'll start working on the fluff now, but if you want to check out the crunch here is the link. Ryder Craw

This was my initial plan. I can see why one might have misgivings though, especially if you're used to maps. For now I've started sketching a bit, and if the maps turn out to be required, I will switch up my style :)

If I get accepted I can help with maps if you want to use them. I create my maps on google docs. I'll post some links below. These are set to view only but I can also set them so that others can edit them. I like using google docs because you have complete creative design.

You do realize your alias is spelled different from what you have in your personal info?

Thank you for pointing that out. All fixed now.

Liberty's Edge

No problem. Wanted to make sure you caught it before you made ten posts and couldn't change it anymore. :)

I've ditched the idea of a dhampir, and am currently working on a catfolk paladin.

Looks like we need a close-range combatant... Catfolk paladin you say?

Reformatting complete, I think. Let me know if there are any glaring errors. Just shopping left.

Also, never really appreciated how much I used PFSRD for traits and equipment until I had to watch my source material so closely. APG doesn't have much for traits to choose from. I might change my official book, since Ultimate Equipment has half the gear I want. Is this choice a thing we are bound to throughout the Chronicles?

Gear is a bit of a special case, in that you will gain "loot" from adventuring too. If there are items you think are cool or very thematically fitting for your character, we will work something out (during the game of course). I didn't notice any errors while skimming.

I've only taken a cursory glance, and it looks fine and interesting. You've chosen the book "Blood of Fiends" I take it?

@DM Runge, would you allow an Eldritch Guardian to qualify for the Improved Familiar feat? RAW he has no arcane caster level, but the ability says he treats his fighter level as his wizard level, and wizard is an arcane caster. I ask this because the easiest way to get a familiar that can utilize the fighter's feats is to have one that is relatively humanoid in shape, such as the Sprite.

I'll allow it. Remember that a sprite is only proficient with simple weapons, shortbow and shortsword.

Do you want us to make an alias before acceptance, or can we just post stats in a spoiler?

Up to you. I don't mind either way, so long as you post your book of choice and have an interesting character :)

Well that's one way to do it, I'll check it out, and thank you for the kind offer!

Yup! It should say so in the character profile. Did I delete it by mistake...?

May I present Kailynn, the Rose

I've selected Unchained as my additional book and took the average (4.5) hit points for her hit die.

I'm still working up her background, but the short version is that she grew up on the streets of Carrion Hill being picked on and bullied by the other street urchins. She ws taken in by the clerics at the temple of Pharasma where she lives to this day. She has become devout in her worship but she just can't shake the street kid inside of her.

I was kind of looking at Burst of Speed, but I also enjoy rolling on that table.

Speaking of which, may as well do my rolling now.
Variant Abilities: 1d100 ⇒ 50
Health: 4d8 ⇒ (3, 8, 2, 6) = 19

Edit: That variant ability is the +2 to Wisdom. I know some GM's have a problem with those. If you do, I could simply take the burst of speed ability.

Hey, thanks for the thoughtful answer to my maps question. And of course no worries about 3pp, I totally respect you wanting to limit rulebooks and interactions.

Now for a couple more questions:
The Shaman's Life Mystery and the Oracle's Life Mystery both offer "Life Link". The Oracle power is worded such that it can be used whenever an ally has taken at least 5 damage but the wording has changed for the Shaman. As stated it *seems* to now only effect that ally if their HP is somewhere in the thin range between (-5 to -CON)...which seems so useless I suspect it's a typo, but the Devs haven't weighed in yet. There's threads hotly debating the RAW and RAI of this wording. Since I'm considering a Life Shaman I thought I'd ask how you'd rule this.

Thanks again!

EDIT:
Wow, one extra book is tricky! To be sure, does it include things like familiar choice (e.g. familiars come from various bestiaries, and even players guides, e.g. the hare comes from Reign of Winter), traits, drawbacks, & feats? I see there are some traits in APG. Are there any Drawbacks in any of the freely included books? I haven't found'm yet but don't own physical copies so am mostly just poking around the PRD.

I'm sure I can work out a concept that uses only one book beside the ones you listed, but figured I'd ask for clarification again to make sure I'm not restricting myself on anything unnecessarily!

Ryder Craw is 100% completed and ready to be reviewed. Let me know what you think. Any and all criticism of his crunch/fluff is appreciated. Thanks!

A question: is there a way we could work out me having a custom magic item? It would basically be a quiver with constant abundant ammunition (CL1 x 1st level spell x 2000 = 2000 total cost) that replenishes any arrow taken during a round on the next round. It's a nice way to not have to worry about closely tracking ammunition, but if you'd rather not it's totally fine.

No good catfolk images. :/

HP: 4d10 + 10 ⇒ (7, 10, 1, 6) + 10 = 34

What happens if I take the Rich Parents trait? Do I get some extra money because it gives extra starting money, or is it completely negated because everyone's wealth by level 5 is standardized?

(I need a measly 50gp extra for my equipment, any way I can get it.)

Also, when picking Intelligence bonus languages, may we also pick from Golarion regional languages like Hallit, Skald and so on, or just the ones that are RAW for that race, setting-neutral?

Whoops, linked to wrong thread for the debate over the RAW and RAI of Shaman's Life Link. Here's the right one.

Also, do I have to roll for hit dice above 1, or can I just take average?

Definitely interested.

Interested in Carrion Hill by rumors of those terrifying monsters, eager to add them to his catalog of madness.
