Background:
Lyanai was born far to the south in the hot, humid jungles of the Mwangi Expanse. Her parents were the rulers of a catfolk territory, and she grew up as a princess, well-loved, well-educated, groomed for a great destiny. The promising start, however, was abruptly ended when slavers from the Shackles attacked and took dozens of her people captive. Upon a daring but reckless and ill thought out rescue attempt, Lyanai herself was captured as well. In irons, she and her people endured weeks in the dark hold of a creaking wooden vessel. Disease and hunger were rampant and food was scarce. From what little the prisoners were given, Lyanai took nothing, distributing her share to her people. "You will eat, and you will survive! That is an order!" Instead, she ate scraps of filth to the laughter of the slavers. "Big time princess! How do you like the taste of that?" The humiliation grew day by day, as Lyanai grew weaker, and her people witnessed the treatment of their chieftain's daughter with great pain in their hearts.

Finally, the catfolk were sold at a port in Cheliax, and there at last they received proper food and water, bringing them and especially Lyanai back from the edge of death. They were still just as much captives, but they were to be nourished and groomed to sell for the best prices. From then on, every day, the same process repeated. The slavemasters would come to the dungeons for the catfolk, and Lyanai would stand in front of her people, bar the way, and say, "You will not take my people." Then, the guards would tear her away, tie her to a cross, and the slavemaster's sadistic sorcerer would blast her with jolts of electricity as one of her people was taken. For hours, she would be electrocuted, on the other side of the bars from her people who watched helplessly as she screamed, until she passed out into the mercy of darkness. Every day, this would happen again, until she was the only one left.

At that point, the sorcerer working for the slavemaster had electrocuted Lyanai every day for weeks, and, not wanting the amusement to end, had come to the decision of buying Lyanai for himself. The slavemaster, recognizing how stubborn and unyielding -- and therefore unsellable -- Lyanai was, acquiesced. She was kept for long months after that by the sorcerer, who derived great pleasure from torturing her on a daily basis in a multitude of ways. However, his desire to inflict pain would ultimately one day become his undoing. One day he was blasting her with waves and waves of electricity, screaming, "Fall down! Why won't you FALL DOWN!", while she was on all fours on the floor, refusing to collapse. He screamed and blasted louder and louder, eyes bulging, the veins in his head throbbing, until one of them popped. Suddenly he just stared blankly ahead, and then dropped to the floor, dead. At that instant, Lyanai had a vision of karmic justice, became convinced that good would ultimately win, and felt an aura of good ignite in her body.

As a possession, Lyanai was inherited by the sorcerer's son, a young Chelaxian merchant, who had no interest in torture. Instead, he put her to use doing mundane menial things, carrying heavy objects at the store, cleaning and cooking at home, and similar things. Three months later, he found only a note. "I could have escaped the first day. By today, you have made enough money off me to compensate the price that your father paid for me. I consider all debts settled. Don't look for me."

For the first time in half a year, Lyanai was de facto a free woman, as much as one can be in Cheliax. Her first action was to send a letter south, informing her clan of her intentions. She was going to stay in Avistan until she had gathered every single catfolk who was taken by the slavers. For the past two years, she has been doing just that, tracking down her missing clan members and freeing them. On unfortunate occasions, violence was required. But most times, Lyanai was able to negotiate an arrangement, either with a straight monetary settlement with the gold she had garnered on her adventures, or by providing services in return of a slave's freedom. She has sent her freed clansfolk north to Varisia to form a base of operations where she can send further freed slaves.

At the moment, she is searching the Lake Encarthan region for missing catfolk and/or the money to purchase their freedom.

Appearance and Personality:
Lyanai was raised a warrior princess, and she exhibits a level of stubbornness and pride, which might lead to reckless actions or biting off more than she can chew. She is deeply self-sacrificing, believing in the responsibility of nobility to provide for their subjects. Despite the horrors and torture she has endured, she has not become permanently grim and brooding, nor does she conform to the stoic humorless stereotype of a paladin -- instead, now that she is free, she is good-natured and outgoing, even flirtatious and playful. Either there is a level of denial going on, or cats land on their feet psychologically as well. Her charming, easygoing manner has done more to free her kinsfolk than her skill at arms has.

Spiritually, the affectionate and loving Lyanai is the most gravitated Shelyn.
