Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

>UPDATED MAP<

I just randomly placed you. Shout out if you have a specific place you want to be. The shapes represent fiendish statues

Metagamey goodness:

Spoiler:
I made a DM call that Rebuke Death would work on her, since it directly stabilized her, but wasn't a 'heal' type of spell, rather a domain power. Don't know if it was the right call, but hey, I stand by it.

More Metagamey Goodness:
So was I right about my guess as to what happened to her?

Thanks for the welcome back Rags.

Not sure if anyone did it, so just in case (I'm regretting you taking that name now Rags... ;)

Bethany sings a quick tune over Toranna's corpse, checking to see if any of her belongings are magical, before crouching down and removing the earrings and placing them in her ears. Casts [i]Detect magic.

Male Human Rogue 6

Swire sets to work relieving Moranna's corpse of it's valuables. "Oh, this is lovely. You'd have to be one wily cutter to use this right." He takes the knife and slips it under his cloak. "I'll just be taking this."

"Shadowknave, eh? Oh, the number of berks who called themselves that..."

Knowledge(Local), have I heard of this guy? 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

"Perhaps we still have the element of surprise," Karrin says, "if that's the case we need to move cautiously. Swire you'd better give this door a look. While he's doing that You'd better have a look through that book Justin and see if there are any portal exits mentioned. Someone better watch our backs just in case the alarm has been raised. Swire you'll take the lead, but if there's trouble duck back behind me. I'm going to stay large as long as I can. It really helps with my reach and power. Anyone think of anything else?"

"Ya don't kick in a man's door, kill the doorman an' then wait to be announced. Let's move."

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

Nari stoops down and picks up her psicrystal before heading on.

"Soo uh is it okay for us to be using the healing potions here or not?"

On a side note will the comprehend languages spell still be in affect on Justin?

Metagamey goodness:

** spoiler omitted **

Spoiler:
Actually, it heals 1d4+2 points of damage, but only if the person is at 0 or below. But no biggie; actually made it more intriguing a mystery, IMO! :-)

Male Human Rogue 6

"Out of the way, let a professional take a look at these." Swire pushes his way to the front of the group and begins to carefully look over the door.

Merle-I'm pretty sure that the comprehend languages spell is still in effect, but the drawback of Pbp's is I get REEEEELY lost time-wise! ;P Mr Dungeon Monkey? Is my Comprehension spell still ticking?

No worries Flash! One of the reasons that I named my PC this was for the PUN factor! OH I miss my college days, when we played CHampions super-heros, and the PUN was on! I used to be the champion PUNster then, I was put in the PUNitentiary so many times,... ;P Ah well, back to today! :)

Justin Hands Mr Swire the dagger with a grin.

"Use it in good health!" He quips. He also nods in response to Karrin and Drazek's statements.

"Right-o, I'll skim and see if the actual portal location is mentioned. It probably is, This Toranna seemed to be pretty retentive about her information. But it may take time to find, and this isn't exactly a reading room!" He grumbles, but dutifully pulls out the notebook they found earlier, and begins at the end, flipping backwards to try and see if he can spot any mention of other portals, or even a reference to the plane of fire, or the Hive, which may lead to the hoped-for reference. He looks up occasionally between pages, keeping an eye on the group as a whole, trying to multitask.

Before the group enters the dark tunnel Bethany sings a dirge over the cleric's corpse. Her armor, weapons, ring and earrings glow with arcane fire

You cast that in the vaults right? It's been about 40 minutes since that time. It would just be running out at 40 mins, so I'll give you the benefit of a doubt, but it's gone after this ..

Justin:

Spoiler:
Toranna's journal does mention the Lower Ward gate, now that Justin knows what he's looking for. There is a mention of the alley behind 'The Ossuary' and a mention of a brown glass bead to open. She doesn't go into detail as to where the Citadel locus is though, but obliquely mentions 'a platform' in one passage.

Just as Justin frantically searches for more clues, the writing on the pages writhes and becomes encoded once again.

Knowledge (Planes): 1d20+7, Perception: 1d20+13

Issac:

Spoiler:
Issac's seen several of the subjects 'in the flesh' so to speak on the streets of Sigil. The statues are fairly uninspired renditions of fiendish subjects. A maralith brandishes six weapons, a nalfeshee scowls in porcine anger. There is also a Piscoloth and a Gelugon in the mix, so all the Lower Planes are pretty well represented. There is no way any of these statues are frozen actual creatures, the carvings are just too crude. Issac gets the impression that these statues were most likely stolen from a theatrical company, or bought at some cheap sculpting shop. The darkness of the tunnel does make them fairly menacing at a distance though.

Knowledge(Local), have I heard of this guy? 1 d 20 + 9

Swire:

Spoiler:
Swire does remember hearing a bit of barmy barkle from one of his regular contacts: A bubber name of Old Keiran. Swire bought him a cheap ale once in a while at the Butcher's Block tavern because the sod was once a hende merc before an Abyssal shark chewed off one of his pipestems. He still had the dark of things in the cully-bashing profession. Old Keiran had mentioned that there was a new blood on the block who was interested in building a gang up in the Hive. Swire had had to repress a laugh when the guy mentioned the name Shadowknave, precisely because it was so trite. He had never followed up because he figured he'd laugh at the cutter and get challenged to a duel for his pains. Someone with a moniker that lame probably had a touchy sense of honor as well. Keiran had said the cutter hung in the common room of the Butcher's Block.

Perception: 1 d 20 + 7

Mr. Swire:

Spoiler:
Swire takes a good gander at the black iron doors. They look mean enough to bite, and Swire notes that there is definitely a magical rune, most likely a ward of some type, carved into them. The imp's head knocker also looks as if it has one of those pesky Magic mouth spells affixed to it. Swire can just notice the slight wavering by the leering imp's iron lips.

Bethany:

Spoiler:
Bethany feels much less hot all of a sudden. The enervating atmosphere seems a bit cooler

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

Isaac chuckles and smacks one of the fiend statues.
"Ha! These berks bob some half-arsed theater props and set 'em up in a dark room and we're supposed to quiver with fear. Bunch o' amateurs!"
Donny, you're out of your element!

Male Human Rogue 6

As Swire looks over the gate, he begins to talk. "I think I've heard of this Shadowknave berk. Trying to start a gang, if the chant's right. Staying at the Butcher's Block if you feel like chatting." Swire then steps away from the doors. "Door's enchanted. I can't do anything but set it off."

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Oh, that's plenty! Thx mr monkey! ;) (I had forgotten the notebook was in code.)

"Oh, SHards and Shells!" Justin curses, and slams the tiny notebook shut. He frowns as he shoves it back into his pocket.

"The journal does mention the Lower Ward gate, but I didn't find any information about it's exact location on THIS side of the door. There was a mention of the alley behind 'The Ossuary', and I think it takes a brown glass bead to open. She doesn't go into detail as to where the Citadel locus is though, but obliquely mentions 'a platform' in one passage. That's all I had time to skim. My Comprehension spell just ticked it's last. To get anything else I either need another copy of my spell, or I'll have to crack her code."

He frowns at Swire's words as well.

"Well, THIS just keeps getting better!" He grumbles as he examines the symbols on the door himself.

Know/Arcana: 1d20+11=16, Spellcraft: 1d20+11=18

Sheesh! IC don't like me no more! ;P

"I don't have any dispelling magics, unless I can figure a way to counterspell these things as they go off,..." He mumbles, and shrugs.

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

Isaac shrugs.
"Let's give this place the laugh, then and head the other way. One o' them Illuminated bashers is bound to have a key or something."

"Would something like this help?" Merle asks as she hands Justin a scroll of tongues.

Was it a Bard, cleric or wizard scroll of tongues?

Seph looks somewhat disappointed when he finds out Justins spell has worn off he had been quite looking forward to speaking to Justin for a while.

"Well if we kick in this door it's likely going to be heavy fighting from here on out. On the other hand we could continue along on the outside. Perhaps there's another door."

"Would you like me to scout ahead for you? I can send my psicrystal. Or not. However you like. But I can if you want me to," Nari offers shyly.

Female Avian Harpy Avian Harpy 4 Bard (Arcane Duelist) 2

Bethany's demeanour relaxes after putting on the earrings and you can see that she is no longer sweating profusely either.
"That sounds like it would be a good idea Nari."

Perception check needed:

DC 15:

Spoiler:
You think you hear something big moving from beyond the door

DC 20:

Spoiler:
There is a scraping sound from beyond the door and some muffled voices

DC 25:

Spoiler:
A distinct sound of moving furniture comes from beyond the door, the scrape of tables and chairs are quite distinct. The voices are talking, but it isn't Common.

DC 30:

Spoiler:
Furniture is being moved about beyond the door. Voices in some Goblinoid tongue mutter just under the range of comprehensibility

DM, are there any gaps in the door, enough that I can at least vaguely see anything that might be propped against it? I.e. enough to get line of sight to use matter agitation on?

Actually the propping is an assumption of Issac. The door hasn't bonged, shivered, or anything, so it doesn't seem likely anything is being propped against it. The scraping noises could be anything. And the doors are tight-sealed.

Well, since Ekuur heard what sounded like something big, it seemed like a logical assumption. But if there's no way to get a glimpse through the door cracks, it's a moot point, anyway. Do the doors open in or out?

Since they all have different minimum caster lvl's for the spell it will affect how long the scrolls affect will last.

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Justin growls in frustration.

"Of ALL the days to NOT have 'Read Magic' studied,...!!" He literally growls under his breath.

"Merle, can you read these glyphs? Before we can bypass them, we have to know what they are." He grumbles.

"Noises,... what?" He also puts his head close to, (but NOT touching!) the door and listens.

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

"Somebody moving around in there. But doing what? They could be redecorating for all I know!" He says softly, shrugging. "Maybe if we jump them now, while they're doing,... whatever it is they're doing,... we'll get the drop on them. It's this door ward I'm worried about, I don't want us to get fried before we can even get through the door!"

"Wait, you have a 'Tounges' scroll?!? That's fantastic! It's a much more powerful spell than the one I was using! Oh, you should save it for a true emergency though, I won't be able to replace a spell like that for,... well, hopefully not TOO long, but a while. Thanks though." He adds with a smile to Merle.

"I also have all these." Merle mentions as she continues to concentrate on reading the doors magic whilst simultaneously pointing to several scrolls sitting at the top of her pack,

If Justin decides to look

Spoiler:
Inside on top of the pack are the following, 1 scroll of heroism, 1 scroll of tongues, 1 scroll of lightning bolt, 1 scroll of Levitate, 1 scroll of Alter self, 1 scroll of Blur, 1 scroll of Invisibility, 1 scroll of Hideous laughter, 4 scrolls of burning hands, 2 scrolls of scorching ray , 2 scrolls of flaming sphere 2 scrolls of Fireball (6th). Also surprisingly just underneath that appears to be the slightly burnt remains of a spellbook cover the part of the title ..ph's Spellbook written in a childlike scrawl on the front of it.

"If you want to write any of them up later let me know and I'll let you have them" Merle adds whilst still reading the writing on the door

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

"That's a very generous offer Merle." He replies after peeking into her backpack.
"If I do ask for the favor of copying some into my spellbook, I'll return the favor twofold. Two scrolls for every one i burn to copy the spell into my tome!" He responds with a grin, still trying to decipher anything he can from the door by reading over her shoulder.
