Its not easy being a familiar especially when your master is the one that got you in this mess in the first place. Merle may be arrogant pig headed and never really plan anything through but she does feed him and let him sleep whenever he wants so she cant be all bad.
As for Seph at times he can vaguly remember being more......Vertical standing as well as being a lot smarter. Although his mind hasent completly disapeared it is buried deep underneath his now cat like mindset that combined with his innability to effectivly communicate in his current body proves to be a constant source of frustration to the young cat
