Kyrus spurs his horse on quickly, not wanting to wait any longer than he absolutely has to. The ride feels much too long even then. The column of smoke rising above the hamlet is a bad sign. He covers his mouth as they ride in to the village, keeping the smoke from his nose as they arrive. It seems that the lizardfolk certainly did a number on this place. "Who's gone after them? We need to know any details, and quickly."

Úlf notices the ornamentation worn by the lizardfolk corpses and decides that having them handy might be useful in the future, so he takes one of the belts and baldrics to keep in his pack for reference.
At the desperate woman's screams, Úlf glances here and there, looking for any signs of passage. "How many? Which way??" he asks, the questions simple and to-the-point.
GM &rew |
The crying woman’s young companion steps up to explain. ”This woman is Piann, Cromm’s wife. Cromm and some men were out hunting when we were attacked. The lizardfolk came on us without warning – we never saw them coming! Cromm’s hunting party returned to find the lizardfolk completing their raid. They slaughtered every looting lizard they could and then, seeing that Cromm’s only son was one of the victims, they swore bloody vengeance against the marauders and left in hot pursuit in the direction of the Lizard Marsh.” She points off towards the southwest, where you can see the edges of plowed fields and the beginning of what must be a freshwater marsh.
Kyrus Leafstrider |
"I find myself agreeing with you friend. Fighting off a band of raiders is far different from attacking a tribe in their own homes. We need to find them, and quickly." He frowns for a moment. "Tell me, do these markings mean anything? It seems that the raiders are all wearing blue feathers."
Amelleanne |
"Local hunters are going to know the terrain and they've already got a few hours ahead of us. We'll need to move quickly." Amelleanne's face has gone cold and emotionless as she struggles to compartmentalize the death and destruction in the village.
Leon Primrose |
Don't hold it in, bottling your emotions can affect your abilities. I find focusing them helps, pick an emotion and then let it drive you. Revenge, justice, passion...Anything but holding it inThe young hunter say's to Amellanne putting a hand on her shoulder. Lorelei might be able to track them via scent, that ornamentation might still have one.
Would i in fact be able to have Lorelei pick up a scent for us to follow?
GM &rew |
No need, Leon. Although a swamp is pretty...fragrant...so tracking by scent would be more challenging than in the woods or mountains. Luckily, the Baron left a pretty clear trail to follow!
Entering the marsh is like entering another world. It is thick with lush vegetation and alive with the incessant whirring and clicking of insects, reptiles, amphibians, and other…bigger…creatures. Reeds grow as high as a person on horseback, making long distance viewing impossible. The flat terrain is occasionally broken by a hillock which rises above the reeds or pools of stagnant water green with slime and fronds. Since Cromm was not trying to conceal his passage, you have little trouble finding and following his trail. You may easily ride the horses along the path, or you may go on foot; either way, you must move in single file.
Please provide your order along the path, what you have in your hands, etc.
Kyrus Leafstrider |
Do they not answer my question?
"This place has a dangerous air about it," Kyrus says as they approach the marshes. "This is a place where civilization is not welcome. We should be careful." Kyrus dismounts, not wanting to take his horse in to the bog. His eyes examine his surroundings, looking for signs of the men from the hold or of something that might want to make a snack of a few travelers. "Hold a moment. There are tracks here. Tracks from something very large with three toes."

Kyrus stops dead at the head of the column. "Oops." He looks a bit abashed that he missed the rather dangerous hazard. "No, that does not look good at all. Let's give it a wide berth and make sure we don't fall in. The trail should continue on the other side."

Massacre In the Marsh
After another half an hour in the swamp, carrion birds rise from the trail, frightened by your approach. Pushing through some tall weeds, you come upon the remains of a fight. Dead men and horses are sinking into the mud on both sides of the path. Across the path are the dead bodies of two brightly colored dinosaurs, about the size of a human.
The men are obviously from Cromm’s hunting party. While searching the bodies, you find Cromm - thoroughly dead and partially consumed. The men appear to have been looted after the battle, as none have weapons or armor worth keeping.

Kyrus bows his head as they find their way to the bloody battlefield. "We're too late." He drops to one knee next to Cromm's body, gently closing the eyes of the former chief. "May Old Deadeye's watch ensure your safe passage to the Boneyard. And may Pharasma be kind as she sees your soul to the next life." He pauses for a moment, lifting Cromm's left hand. "His wedding band was taken. It seems that the lizardfolk looted the bodies before they left them to rot. We'll have more to recover once we've caught up to them." He stands, unslinging his bow. "The tracks lead further in to the swamp. Let's run them down and gut these beasts so we can retrieve what they've stolen and avenge these men."
Úlfheðinn Sigmundarson |
Úlf seems particularly crestfallen by finding the body of the man, his normally-jovial demeanor somber. "I could not have said it better myself." he replies, his grip on his axe tightening as his anger seethes beneath the surface.

Trail of the Raiders
You are on a path which follows the edge of a large hillock to your left. To your right is water as far as the eye can see, and it looks deep. You notice some slight movement in the brush uphill of you, and then suddenly, you are looking at a band of hidden lizardfolk who are looking back at you. These reptilian humanoids have green scales, short and toothy snouts, and thick alligator-like tails. They are heavily armed with javelins and morningstars, carry shields, and wear baldrics of red-brown pelts. The lizardfolk raise their weapons, but do not attack.

Kyrus draws back an arrow, but doesn't fire. "Hold there!" he calls out to the lizardfolk. "We're on the trail of a group of your kind that slaughtered a village nearby. They were wearing blue feathers and seemed perfectly happy to loot and mutilate their victims. Does that sound familiar to you?"

GM &rew |
One of the lizardfolk looks to the largest of their group and speaks in a strange language that you do not understand. Unless you speak draconic... The big one nods its head, never taking its eyes off of you. He then hops down from the rise, takes two steps toward you, and says in common, "Yesss. My sssecond reportsss Blue Feather Clan attack human lair. Not my clan - not my schlarrah...trouble. War with scaleless oness Redeye do not want - only reason let you stay in home water. Do with Blue Featherss what you must - but leave Redeye and clan alone. You ssmart - tell other ssscaleless onesss Redeye sspeaks true and not attack your nest." He looks down the path in the direction you are headed, then back at you.
Kyrus Leafstrider |
Kyrus lowers his bow as the lizardfolk speaks. "Thank you. We have no desire for a war with your people either. We simply wish to recover what was stolen by the Blue Feathers and return to the survivors. If you could point us toward their waters, we'll leave you and your tribe in peace and continue with out mission."
GM &rew |
Redeye points towards a path that leads to the north. He then makes a quick gesture to the other lizardfolk, and they all glide off into either the water or the weeds and disappear.
========================
After 20-30 minutes following the path, you hear the noise of several lizardfolk through the reeds blocking your sight ahead. You stop, listen, and then move cautiously forward.
Ahead in a large clearing is the camp of the Blue Feather Clan. The area is dominated by a single large tree and a boulder about 10 feet high. There are five lizardfolk gathered around a heap of household items that have been dumped on a wall hanging spread out under the tree. The lizardfolk are examining the objects with intense curiosity; they clearly have no idea what to do with them. A few yards away is another pile of swords, shields, and various pieces of armor.
A sixth lizardman is sitting on top of the large rock. Like the others, he is armed with a shield, a club, and three javelins. He appears to be on watch, but he is too absorbed in the loot examination to pay much attention to anything else.
You have one round of surprise on the lizardfolk. Initiative order for surprise round:

I was sick yesterday, and didn't check in. Sorry. I do speak draconic. Could you describe the conversation that occurred between the members of the red clan?

Surprise round:
Leon / Lorelei:

Ulf: You do not have a clear path to the group of lizardfolk - there is a 10 foot tall boulder in the way...
Amelleanne: Ami takes careful aim at the lizardman on the rock, hitting it a second after Bryn's acid strike!
