The False Crypt

The mention of a secret shrine to Pharasma has intrigued me the most. And given that it is located in The Restlands I would like to renew my request to you, my lady, to watch over the grave of your father tonight. I do not believe that the ruffians from today will leave him to rest. With your blessing I will watch over him tonight, and if you (he looks to Sir Giles and Mignar at this) would join me good gentlemen, we can also seek out the shrine of my goddess Pharasma.

Kendra looks at the pale, quiet man,"I would be honored for you to keep vigil over my Father's grave. I don't believe that Gibs and his fellows would do anything, but it will give me comfort to know he won't be disturbed." A look of warm comfort, and the tinges of a pained smile grace the womans elegant face.

We have now entered into a point at which you will be determining the course of events with a bit more freedom.

If the whole group would like to stay in the restlands, then we will travel there, and go through any events in that area and investigate. If you would like to do something else, feel free to do so.

As the late Professor's will has mandated, you will be staying in Ravengro for the next month. You can take time to gather information (rumors and such), and there are places for you to research more information on the town and local events as well.

"I would love to come with you to hold watch over the grave... I would also like to take a few of the books with me to read his notes and try to get a good idea where he was getting in his research

Sr Giles:

The Whispering Way is a sinister organization of necromancers that has been active in the Inner Sea region for thousands of years.

Agents of the Whispering Way often seek alliances with undead creatures, or are themselves undead. The Whispering Way’s most notorious member was Tar-Baphon, the Whispering Tyrant, although the
society itself has existed much longer than even that
mighty necromancer.

The Whispering Way itself is a series of philosophies that can only be transferred via whispers—the philosophies are never written or spoken of loudly, making the exact goals and nature of the secretive
philosophy difficult for outsiders to learn much about.

Exact details on the society are difficult to discern, but chief among the Whispering Way’s goals are discovering formulae for creating liches and engineering the release of the Whispering Tyrant. Agents often travel to remote sites or areas plagued by notorious haunts or undead menaces to perform field research or even to capture unique monsters. Their symbol is a gagged skull, and those who learn too many of the Way’s secrets are often murdered, and their mouths mutilated to prevent their bodies from divulging secrets via speak with dead.

how late in the afternoon/night is it?

"I will accompany you as well. If the Professor was indeed involved with The Way as he described...I fear that Ms. Kendra will indeed need our protection."

"Ms. Kendra, what do you know of The Whispering Way? Giles and Dareth, you as well. I feel that before we venture out, we should understand what we are walking into."

As Mignar speaks, he finds a chair and sits down, looking as though he is ready to divulge more information. However, he stops himself, and leans back, as if waiting for a response.

"I really have no knowledge of the whispering way. I know my Father studied it at times, he would leave his notes out on occasion, but I really don't know anything"

Giles, it's currently around 5:30 - 6:30 or so in the early evening.

I know nothing of The Whispering Way. The professor's journal is the first time I read such a name, though I would expect that to change quickly now. Sir Giles, what say you?

well ms. Kendra correct me if I am wrong

Sir Giles closes his eyes and starts to look as though he is flipping pages in a book

Flips a few more pages in his mind

Looks like he closes the book and picks up another book and opens it

At least that is what I recall reading
He opens his eyes as he shuts the book

"Thank you, Sir Giles. You truly have a gift for knowledge."

"I too have heard of The Whispering Way, although much of my knowledge of them was just revealed by Sir Giles. Now you understand, Dareth, that I feel a slight apprehension of leaving Ms. Kendra, given that we have just been charged with her protection. If The Way were somehow responsible for The Professor's death, it stands to reason that they might come after his family."

"Don't be misinformed, however. I do think that we should investigate the Shrine to determine any useful information. However..."

well if you would feel more comfortable here with her that is fine as well but I would prefer if you were with us bc of you way with words... dont get me wrong I am not afraid of a fight I am kinda looking forward to it, however we will be calling this area home for a while I would rather not have them hate us all

"I understand..."

"Ms. Kendra, will you be ok here by yourself tonight?"

"Yes, thank you. I will be fine."

"Well then, I suppose we should prepare ourselves for tonight. Dareth, I shall defer to you for this adventure."

or if you are willing to watch the stars/hold my reading light you are more than welcome to come with us...
as he gathers his books in to his backpack and heads to his cart

if I had known I would be doing this much reading I would have brought more books... oh well

The three of you depart the Lorrimor household, and head towards the Restlands. Going off of the notes in the late Professor's journal you seek out the False Crypt at the intersection of the eversleep, and the black path.

As you enter the Restlands, night has set around you, and a dense fog settles just above the ground, the air is thick with an almost unatural quiet. The ground is still swollen and wet from the earlier rain, and the only thing that disturbs the gloomy silence is the sucking slurp from your boots as each step pulls them from the mud. The moon hangs high in the sky, but looks distant and grey, even the stars(of which you can see many) seem dull here.

Eventually, after meandering through the fog, and somehow managing to avoid stepping on any graves, you approach what you believe to be the false crypt indicated in the Professor's journal.

The crypt itself is a freestanding granite mausoleum, the roof of which is decorated with a pair of leering gargoyle statues. A single stone door with a rusty looking lock sits in the mausoleum’s south facade.

Giles, upon further examination of the lock, you can see that it is broken. It's clasp melted by acid, and then put back into place so that to casual observation the lock appears intact.

Giles:
You are able to further deduce that Professor Lorrimor most likely used a few vials of acid to disable this lock several weeks ago, and then arranged it upon his exit to look as though it had never been broken.

for expediency, I'm going to assume you all enter the crypt soon, feel free to RP any discussion before entering.

Within the crypt, a steep flight of cracked stone steps leads down into the cold, damp earth to a large crypt lined with empty niches, curiously no dead are interred here.

Giles:
You can recall reading in church records that this crypt was one of the first filled in Ravengro's early days.

No one has been into this chamber for several decades, save Professor Lorrimor.

give me perception and survival checks

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
survival: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (2) + 0 = 2

I can recall reading in church records that this crypt was one of the first filled in Ravengro's early days.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Survival: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

"So Sir Giles, you propose that this is the crypt that our dear Professor perused?"
