Horgus Perception 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Anevia Perception 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Aravashnial's blindness means he can't see anything.
Anevia shouts, "Look out!" as object begin to drop from the chamber ceiling.
Roll initiatives, please, including for the NPCs. However, only Anevia isn't surprised. Please also place them and yourselves on this map. Fairly self-explanatory - the black blobs are the statues.

For the DM:
1d8 ⇒ 7
1d8 ⇒ 8
1d8 ⇒ 8
1d8 ⇒ 3
Everyone is surprised except Anevia, so we can run the surprise round now even without Mulluq's initiative and position.
Anevia fumbles for her bow.
That's Anevia's action. Meanwhile, there are three attacks - one on Mulluq, one on Horgus and one of Aravashnial. Of course, you are all flat-footed.
Mulluq 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20 to hit, damage 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 and if that hits you may be grabbed, 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14 v your CMD
Horgus 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17 to hit, damage 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 and if that hits you may be grabbed, 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17 v your CMD (13 for Horgus)
Aravashnial 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 to hit, damage 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 and if that hits you may be grabbed, 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20 v your CMD (13 for Aravashnial)
Black leathery things about five feet across drop from the ceiling. One lands on Mulluq and another on Horgus while a third thuds to the ground inches from Aravashnial, making the blind man start and stagger wildly. The one hitting Mulluq scrambles for purchase on the paladin's metal armour with squirming tentacles, an extensible rasping mouth scraping towards his bare flesh. Horgus gives a muffled scream as his attacker engulfs his entire head.
Need Mulluq's initiative and position (so I can place him and BLT1). Then it is most likely Hannik.
If anyone cares to try, Knowledge (Dungeoneering), DC 11:

Jod Eastwind |
Jod's sword is in hand and he's confident the tiefling paladin can handle a leather bag, so it's probably pretty obvious to Hannik & Co. that the young ranger is turning to deal with the creature that missed the blinded wizard.
I'm a little hesitant to take a swing with the falchion at a bag-wearing friend lest the sword pass right through.
Hannik |
"Aravashnial! Back up!" She pulls on his arm to indicate direction and begins summoning. An eagle comes screeching out of a dive just above the leathery thing and begins shredding into it with claws and beak.
5' back to L8
Summon Monster I (Celestial Eagle) (Standard Action Summon)
Placed in L10 for potential flank with Rhok

Talon 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18, Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18, Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Jod
Jod Eastwind |
Jod brings his sword around in a high arc down on the creature that missed the blinded mage.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 6 + 2 = 19 Flanking with Rhok - is the eagle in my square, then?
Damage: 2d4 + 6 ⇒ (1, 1) + 6 = 8
Aravashnial
Hannik |
I must have still been asleep when I read your earlier post. Somehow I thought you were doing the exact opposite and going after the one on Mulluq.
I said L10 for a "potential" flank with Rhok under the assumption you were leaving and he would slide over with a 5ft step.
Let's revise.
Eagle appears in I8 and attacks BLT2
Aubrey the Demented/Malformed |
The eagle tears into the creature settled over Horgus' face.
OK, each of those attacks has a 50% chance of hitting Horgus instead of the creature.
Jod's slash makes the creature quiver, tentacles waving.
Aravashnial will try to step away. Howeve, since he's blind and doesn't actually know where the creature is, it'll be in a random direction and at half speed. He'll provoke an AoO anyway but if he steps on the thing he'll stop moving and it might get a chance to grapple him.
Eeny, meeny... Working as north being 1 and working round clockwise 1d8 ⇒ 1
AoO 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23 to hit, damage 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Aravashnial staggers away, the creature lashing out and walloping him as he goes.
Anevia shoots at BLT3
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 to hit, damage 1d6 ⇒ 3
Anevia takes aim with her bow at the one of the floor, but Arashnial staggering through her line of sight puts off her aim.
BLT 1 and BLT2 with attempt to maintain their grapples and inflict damage, while BLT 3 shifts 5' and casts Darkness.
BLT 1 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9 v CMD, damage 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
BLT 2 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24 v CMD, damage 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
The creature hanging on to Mulluq still can't get a proper grip, but the one on Horgus continues to squeeze mercilessly. Suddenly, in the middle of the room it all goes dark.
It counts as total darkness in the are as marked on the map.
Mulluq.
Sol Calondor |
Bardic knowledge to figure these things out: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Sol's dagger comes out, but he keeps the flat pressed against his thigh while he edges back toward the party.
Real actions to be posted on his init.
Hannik |
God. Apparently it was my day for too hasty reading yesterday as I also missed that Horgus was grappled when going back to move the eagle for Jod.
51+ is Horgus: 1d100 ⇒ 71
51+ is Horgus: 1d100 ⇒ 61
51+ is Horgus: 1d100 ⇒ 84
Wow. I very likely killed Horgus. He's taken 25 damage between this and the 2 blt attacks
Mulluq'Tar Sheptat |
As the ambushing creature slides off of Mulluq's misshapen horned head, he strikes out at it. He slashes downward with his longsword, as soon as he grabs it from his offering tail, before snapping at the thing with his prominent fangs. Sadly, he is more flailing wildly than anything else.
The darkness shouldn't be an issue with my darkvision.
Swift action, draw longsword
Full-attack on BLT1
Longsword 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Bite 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5
Kira Valerious |
Kira moves across to get a better angle on the beast that isn't attacking anything yet. Move to F8 via column F5 to avoid any Aoo's
Fire crossbow: Atk BLT3: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19 DMG: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Sol Calondor |
Hearing Mullaq's sword land on stone, Sol heads that way. His shuffles his feet along the ground slowly to prevent tripping or a sudden impact in the darkness.
Move to 1d3 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14M
Breaking into normal light again, the young man tries to sink his dagger into Mulluq's foe.
Dagger v BLT1: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21 ... damage 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
EDIT: Oooh. Crit chance
Dagger v BLT1: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17 ... damage 1d4 ⇒ 2
Kira Valerious |
Kira can't see BLT3 - it's engulfed in a sphere of darkness. You should reconsider your action.
Bugger, missed that bit.
Please take that action as against BLT2 then as that's all I can see, and about all I can do. Will hit AC15 shooting into combat off that roll.
Roll to see if I hit it, or horus: 51+ is Horgus: 1d100 ⇒ 36
Aubrey the Demented/Malformed |
Hannik |
Hannik backpedals away from the dark sphere enough to see that Horgus is down. She quickly begins summoning again drawing a dog from another plane and directing it to pull the thing off of Horgus.
Summon celestial dog to H6. This dismisses the eagle.
Grapple vs BLT on Horgus: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (4) + 0 = 4
Feel free to place me or I'll do it later. Out of time.
Jod Eastwind |
"Why'd the torches all go out? Never mind - is everyone clear of the one I struck?"
He moves, prodding with the falchion to try and locate the creature.
Random direction, 1 is up: 1d8 ⇒ 8
With a start, Jod quickly comes upon his cousin, "O-ho! Sorry 'bout that! Where did the blasted thing go?"
Turn right or left: 1d2 ⇒ 2
He turns left and almost immediately strikes on the thing. "Found it!"
Miss Chance, 51+ hits: 1d100 ⇒ 99
Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Damage: 2d4 + 6 ⇒ (4, 4) + 6 = 14
Aubrey the Demented/Malformed |
Jod feels the creature go squelch under his sword.
BLT3 down.
Hannik's summoned dog snaps at the creature attacking Horgus but can't get a grip.
Anevia provikes an AoO by trying to grapple the thing.
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8 to hit, damage 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Anevia's grapple attempt
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 v CMD
Aravashnial yells, "What manner of creature do we face?"
Anevia drops her bow and limps over, trying to grab the thing attached to Horgus' head. She avoids it as it lashes at her but can't pull the thing away. "Someone help me!" she shouts desperately.
BLT1 attacks Sol
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 to hit, 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 damage and potential grab, 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13 v Sol's CMD or be grappled
BLT2 randomly chooses either the dog or Anevia 1d2 ⇒ 2.
BLT2 attacks Anevia
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 to hit, 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 damage and potential grab, 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20 v Sol's CMD or be grappled
Giving up on Mulluq, the creature turns on Sol, its new tormentor. The other one tries to fight off Anevia as it defends its kill - Horgus.
Mulluq.
Mulluq'Tar Sheptat |
Mulluq steps out of the darkness, despite the fact that it didn't hinder him, to take advantage of Sol's positioning. Once again he swings his sword and bites at the creature. He is still uncertain what it is they are even fighting, so his attacks are not at his full fury.
5' step to O12
Full-attack
Longsword (with flank) 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 4 + 2 = 19, damage 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Bite (with flank) 1d20 - 1 + 2 ⇒ (3) - 1 + 2 = 4
Sol Calondor |
It's got to hit to grapple, right? It missed the melee attack, but the grapple check is high enough to succeed. I'll assume that the grapple check doesn't happen because it missed. Let me know if I was wrong and I'll change the post.
When the thing turns on him, Sol leans back quickly out of its grasp and interposes his shield.
"Mulluq, help them! I've got this thing!"
Edit: Ninja'd by Troy.
Bravado aside, the young man still feels grateful when Mulluq stays to fight their common foe.
Sol drives his shield at the thing as a distraction from the dagger thrust right behind.
Dagger v BLT 1: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14 .... Damage 1d4 ⇒ 4
If that kills it, Sol hurries to help the others, move to N10. It it doesn't he stays put.
Sol hurries to help the others. Double move to J7
Kira Valerious |
Kira drops her crossbow, and dras her sword as she steps to attack the thing nearest.
Move to G7 (or G8 whichever is best to flank)
Atk BLT2: 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 1 + 2 = 12 Dmg: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Rhok follows the sounds of battle from the dark into the light. Quickly taking in the scene, he casts a dweomer (not used that word for a while) of healing on Horgus. This stabilizes the unconscious merchant and stops him bleeding, but he does not wake up.
Between them, Mulluq and Sol team up to dispatch another of the creatures. It is not often that a paladin bites his enemies to death.
Kira steps up to stab with her sword. But the creature is surprisingly nimble for a flapping piece of black leather.
I put Kira in H8. Horgus is unconscious and doesn't threaten, and Anevia is currently unarmed and probably doesn't threaten. But the summoned dog definitely threatens. But you still miss.
Hannik.
Kira Valerious |
I put Kira in H8. Horgus is unconscious and doesn't threaten, and Anevia is currently unarmed and probably doesn't threaten. But the summoned dog definitely threatens. But you still miss.
Yeah, I figured that may be the case.
Hannik |
Hannik edges in trying to beat the leathery thing into a pulp with her Morningstar, it rebounds off of stone instead. The dog snarls and snaps but the thing on the ground writhes and curls back from it just in time.
MA: Draw Morningstar
5' step to G6
SA: Attack: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (11) + 0 = 11
Summoned Dog Attack: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 2 = 10
Jod
Jod Eastwind |
Jod follows the sound of the combat, also, stepping out of the darkness right in front of the creature.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Damage: 2d4 + 6 ⇒ (2, 2) + 6 = 10
I find it hard to believe he would move tactically when he doesn't know the situation, so it's a straight line to the fight and take a shot.
"Ha!"
Aubrey the Demented/Malformed |
Jod Eastwind |
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
The excitement past, Jod stands there a moment poking the creature with his falchion, "What is this thing, anyway?" before something else catches his attention.
Mulluq'Tar Sheptat |
Perception 1d20 ⇒ 19 (plus Darkvision if it matters)
Mulluq look around at the others with concern, "How is everyone? What happened to Master Horgus? Is he okay? Will he make it? Please, don't tell me I have failed already. I swore to get you all out safely, and have already proven useless." His eyes are filled with sorrow, and his jaw is set with anger.
