The Bogeyman stretches his:
memory to any recent (or not-so-recent, for devils can be patient) events involving House Arvanxi or House Battori and the Bellflower Network.

Nothing relevant springs to mind.

Only House Phandros has recently had problems with the Halflings. A minor Phandros noble was to marry a young Baroness from the equally minor House Spartaco far west of Westcrown. The Bellflower Network intercepted the young Phandros on his way there, assassinated him, and freed several of House Phandros' slaves.

This is why Grand-Count Marcus Phandros is hiring The Bogeyman to hunt down those responsible.

You do not know whether Aaron Smallbridge was part of the assassination.

HP 40/45, AC 21*, Fort +4, Ref +6, Will +8, ArcRes 2/8 Active Effects: Heightened Senses, Defending Bone (45), Extended Shield, Unseen Servant,

Azlain gave the imp a flat look:

"Itch, what were the terms of our agreement? Be specific, please. Your memory of what I agreed to seems to be rusty."

Itch

.

Certainly, Azlain, I shall:
"reciteth our agreement in full.

"But we musteth move quickly without delay." And hastily beginning the trek, the Imp of Barbatos begins to recite your conversation from earlier this morning after you left House Phandros.

His own voice sounds more like a recording, and quoting Azlain and Mendacius, he mimics the voice, the tone, the inflection -- all perfectly.

Our Agreement wrote:

Itch:"I served a great master, a grand Cleric of the Barbatos.

....Servants of Chaos -- allied to thy enemies of Cheliax -- assassinated him. They fooled my master's servants into trusting them. Firsteth they betrayed my master's servants; then they killeth my master. Only I escaped with invisibleness.

"I cameth to Westcrown wherein I expended all my accumulated wealth to buy spies who would informeth me if the assassins returneth here. And they have cometh. Now I needeth a champion. You are a great and powerful wizard, Master Azlain. If I taketh you to these chaotic assassins and help you to ambush them, you can destroy them. I will ask nothing of the share of their wealth. You may have what you will. Only I wanteth vengeance for mine master."

"These Chaos-mongers are allies of your enemy, House Spartaco. And they are afraideth of arcane magic, wielders of such will have thy advantage. They assassinated a Lawful servant of Barbatos -- and it is believeth that they even killed a Lord of House Phandros. Horrible.

“They carry their wealth with them, which is considerable; I have been toldeth. And they have recently returned to Westcrown. They are vulnerable to ambush when they leaveth the city again -- and we shall follow them to ambush them. I for my vengeance, you for their wealth and because they are allies of your enemy."

Mendacius:
"What's actually going to happen is that he's going to travel with you and decide if he likes you, then he's going to watch your targets and learn about them. If he likes you, and doesn't like them, he'll kill them for you.

"If he decides he likes them and doesn't like you, he'll kill you."

Azlain:
"(Mendacius) is mostly correct though, save for one correction. I do not kill those I do not like. I kill those who are guilty of working against Cheliax and the law of Asmodeus. That means uncovering motives are my first priority."

Mendacius:"We're gonna make sure the terms of the agreement are crystal clear first.

"Azlain agrees to conduct surveillance on your targets and determine if they are threats of traitors to Cheliax. The determination of whether they are threats or traitors lies solely with Azlain. He will do this over a period of time not to exceed the next two weeks. Anything outside of the scope of that will be subject of a different bargain.

"And in return for his help, you, the Imp called Itch, who is currently here making this bargain, agree to owe Azlain one favor, to be called in at a later time, after Azlain has completed his end of the bargain. The favor is guaranteed not to be life-threatening or outside reasonable expectations of what an Imp is capable of.

"Neither side of this bargain is transferable. The bargain is struck in good faith, with each party agreeing to act in the other party's best interests while going about the business agreed to here."

Itch:
"You are a mighty wizard, and I heardeth that thee is an enemy of House Spartaco. We ambush them and killeth them; you keepeth their treasure. Simple.

"My favor to you: you keepeth their treasure. Or, I agree that if their treasure is insufficient by your standard that I owe you a favor equitable to the task of this lawful vengeance -- the conditions sayeth by the lovely Mendacius. Simple."

Azlain:
"Agreed.
"I shall get started immediately."

Itch:
"And Azlain grasped Itch's tiny hand and shook it."

Following the tracks of one Aaron Smallbridge is slow going. The woods north by northwest of Westcrown are thick and the terrain is full of obstacles. There are times where the Halfling's tracks are lost for a stretch, but with The Bogeyman's assurances that the great sycamore tree is 'this way,' and under the assumption that that's where the tracks are leading, it is only a matter of time before someone spots again the trail of Aaron Smallbridge. And every half hour or so The Bogeyman becomes more and more confident that, indeed, Aaron Smallbridge must have traveled to the sycamore. Whether he is there alone or has other Bellflower Network villains with him is yet unknown.

HP 40/45, AC 21*, Fort +4, Ref +6, Will +8, ArcRes 2/8 Active Effects: Heightened Senses, Defending Bone (45), Extended Shield, Unseen Servant,

Azlain nodded:

"So you do remember the part about surveillance and determining guilt. Good. I will not be attacking these people at this point. I will watch them, and then I will likely talk to them. If you do not wish your presence known, I suggest you vanish or leave and let me do my job."

Azlain gave Mendacius a nod. The other imp started heading in the direction of the two travelers and their monstrous companion, and vanished.

Azlain watched the group pass and waited until they were just out of sight before following. He did not need to have his eyes on them to follow them, nor did he need to be near them to hear them.

HP 22/22

Mindy flitted along, invisible:

Stealth, invisibility: 1d20 + 28 + 20 ⇒ (13) + 28 + 20 = 61

Mindy drifted on silent wings until she was close enough to hear what the group was saying as they traveled. She listened and watched for a while, staying some fourty feet or so above the heads of the group.

After watching for a while, she guessed that the woman was the least likely to notice what Mindy was planning.

The invisible imp dipped down and slipped a small marble into the woman's pack...

Slight of Hand: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (14) + 18 = 32

If Yaos doesn't notice this, I'll keep going.

Once the group gets close to the halfling tree, Magnius turns to his summoner companion. "You should probably call forth a host of fire elementals to burn down the tree, as well earth elementals to burrow up from underground and attack from within. A swarm of dretches can be used to poison any survivors, and magma mephits to block any obvious exits. Finally, a pack or two of something fast, yet deadly, to hunt down any runaways seems like a good idea."

Halting the tracking of Aaron Smallbridge, the Halfing-hunting monster of Westcrown has informed his two new conspirators that indeed, the great sycamore is only a quarter-mile away, and that now is the time -- as Magnius & Yaos have begun -- to make plans. If it is just Aaron Smallbridge hiding under the tree then this will be easy, but if other Bellflower Network Halflings are present as well,--
....In any case, a stealthy approach is wise if one wants to catch the Halfling(s) off guard. Perhaps the Eidolon and Familiar would be good choices for stealthy scouting.

450 yards in front of them stands the sycamore, not yet visible, but there nonetheless.

Then someone notices something odd. Yaos and Magnius are wrapped in a tight illusion of Andoran Eagle Knight costumes. Sheathed in the deep blue coat. The bronze embossed Eagle. The liberty pin and Andoran flag. Someone has cast a rather detailed illusion of one of the great allies of the Bellflower Network upon Yaos and Magnius. The Bogeyman has cast no spell (without it being both Still and Silent).

Have the Bellflower discovered you already, even from 450 yards away?

Only a few seconds later, in a rending of the ether, sulfurous brimstone erupts adjacent to Yaos, Magnius and The Bogeyman as three Infernal forms of obese, melting-like-wax shapes-of-mankind – hunched over from the massive folds of carrion-jelly undulating under their greasy skin -- are Conjured. Their oversized mouths locked in a wide open, silent wail of frustration, agony, regret and supernatural hunger, they shamble into Magnius, Yaos and The Bogeyman.

For they can not answer their frustration. They can not ease their agony. They can not quell their regret. But perhaps, only just, they may feed their supernatural hunger.

Three minutes prior and from 100 yards behind, eyes burning not merely with the Infernal Hellfire that is Itch's nature, but moreso burning with unbridled wrath and scorn, Magnius, Yaos and The Bogeyman had stopped. Itch began to telepathically whisper to Azlain from his invisible vantage point. From behind the 100 yards of forested cover Azlain catches a glimpse of Yaos, Magnius and The Bogeyman.

Azlain sees Yaos and Magnius wearing uniforms of Andoran Eagle Knights. He listens as Itch places a Divination Sensor near the three and eavesdrops on their conversation. They speak of blasphemies against Queen Abrogail Thrune; they speak of how they want to overthrow the lawful government; they speak of How House Spartaco is joining them in their secret plans to sow chaos and discord in Cheliax. And they laugh at how they murdered a member of House Phandros and a lawful servant of Barbatos and Cheliax.

Itch dismisses the magical sensor eavesdropping on the three and whispers again in Azlain's mind: "You see, it is as I have said." And there is a brief silence.

Itch, in his obsessive drive for vengeance, does not consider how out of character it would be for two Andoran Eagle Knights to be in uniform deep in Cheliax. He does not bother himself that Azlain might -- and indeed does -- recognize the mysterious third person to be the famous hero, The Bogeyman, haunting Westcrown and exterminating her enemies. He does not even realize how impossibly coincidental it would be for these three to have been speaking those specific, incriminating words for the instant of divination. From Her Infernal Majestrix, to House Spartaco, to Francesco Phandros -- all in one minute of dialog.

Itch continues, "Give me one minute to Fly over there. I have scrolls of Summoning and my own poison. You stand here and bathe the are in Fireballs while I and our Conjured allies from Hell burn these villains to nothingness. When you see my devils appear, burn them all! Give me one minute."

And Itch is gone.

A dozen seconds pass before Mendacius returns from her own eavesdropping.

Yaos and Magnius and The Bogeyman are indeed 100 yards further in the woods. They are whispering to each other – plans to strike at a hideout of chaotic Bellflower Network Halflings. It is unknown how many agents of the Bellflower are crouching in their filthy hole.

Then Yaos and Magnius were covered in a minor illusion, making them appear as Andoran Eagle Knights. Mendacius heard another spell cast through a divination sensor that appeared, a metamagic Ventriloquism spell altering their speech – though Mendacius did not hear what words were spoken.

Spoiler:
A shimmering in the air above Magnius' brow is the only notice that a hovering Imp has uncoiled its barbed tail, slick with hellfire venom, into the Inquisitor's neck.

Not obviously an Imp at first blush, earthy brown robes fold voluminously around the Infernal creature, Holy Symbol of Barbatos turning on a chain around its neck.

A burning voice sears into the thoughts of Magnius and Yaos and the Imp's eyes, barely visible behind its cowl, flash with the satisfaction of retribution: "The eyes of Barbatos seeth all, wicked fools. Now ye shall feeleth my revenge."

Whether Magnius or Yaos even bother to remember the little Imp from the Phandros caravan, or his master Vaelin with the fetish for torturing Halflings' feet, who can say?

Spoiler:

@ Azlain, you had a few rounds prior to Itch Invisibly conjuring his Lemures from a scroll if you want to have posted a thought or a movement before the Flesh Devils appear.
.

I know I had to push things to get this to work out; it was the best I could think of as a different way to introduce the PCs to each other in a hurry. Hope you enjoy this farce, I mean, 'fight.'

I think you guys are going to obliterate Itch, but I can see a weird turn of events where you talk to him. When I designed him and Vaelin (god, I loved that NPC.) I pictured a scenario where Itch joined the party as an off-again/ on-again NPC contact or ally. Um, obviously it didn't work out that way, LOL. It'll be kinda funny if somehow you guys actually flub-up and allow him to escape. ....again. But I'm pretty sure you're just gonna kill him.

I cut out any kind of Surprise Round here -- I figure that since I'm taking quite a bit of DM-liberty in a few spots already, just stating with Round 1 is probably best. (So I'm calling Itch's casting from the Scroll a Surprise Round even though he wouldn't have become visible from that and, you know, the Lemures wouldn't show up 'til the following round anyway, but. Um. It was suppose to be three Scrolls anyway and I fudged that; you didn't get the chance to hear Itch's casting from a scroll, and, you know, leaving Azlain in a lurch like that, well.... Hopefully this is okay. (Afterall, you guys against some Lemures and a cool Imp ain't exactly a challenging fight. Of course, sometimes these can turn out quite interestingly. --Anyone wanna negotiate with an unreliable devil ;)

I had decided Itch was going to try to poison Magnius this time since Yaos Saved vs the toxins last encounter.

Itch

.

In her haste to grab the Imp's spell pouch, Mendacius comes away with something quite more valuable....

Itch's Handy Haversack:

1 Handy Haversack
2600 GP (in various gold, platinum, silver and gems)
1 Potion Cure Moderate Wounds, CL 4
1 Potion Lesser Restoration, CL 4
1 Potion Gaseous Form, CL 6
1 Potion Water Breathing, CL 6
1 Scroll Mage's Mansion, CL 12

1 Note, 'I-Owe-You'
Itch owes 3400 GP or an equivalent favor/information to Duchess Viola Salisfer, Matriarch of House Salisfer

1 Note, 'I-Owe-You'
Itch owes 8000 GP or an equivalent favor/information to Grand-Count Marcus Phandros, Patriarch of House Phandros

1 Note, 'I-Owe-You'
Itch owes 4000 GP or an equivalent favor/information to Lord Jeremiah Phandros of House Phandros

1 Letter for Blackmail
Duke Bassianus, the Patriarch of House Drovenge, is plotting to kidnap the teenaged Lady Rainaka Phandros and keep her as a slave girl. He is in love with her -- or rather, what he feels is 'love' as he is an absolute monster of misogyny and sexism.

Because House Drovenge is not a friend to House Phandros, this kidnapping has the added benefit of weakening Phandros as the young Lady is showing excellent potential as a Wizard prodigy.

The letter includes a copy of the Pact between the Fallen Ghaele Azata, Tela Vrindias (who was seduced by Ardad Lili) and the principal Wizard of House Drovenge, Saturninus, via Gr Planar Ally.

While the absolute proof here only indicts the Wizard, Saturninus, an official investigation may well lead to the fall of Duke Bassianus himself.

"You ridiculous creatures are too weak for me to bother summoning, and you attack me!" exclaims Yaos indignantly as she pounds on the Lemure attacking her.

Attack, AoO: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Attack : 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Iterative Attack : 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Yaos got an AoO and then took a full round attack action. That is with a normal heavy mace.

After taking her attack of opportunity on the Lemure trying vainly to trample her to death (for 1 HP), Yaos sees Itch Fly away and turn Invisible.

Because Yaos' Leopards would have made their attacks in Rd 1, they can finish their two Lemures -- and start on the Lemure adjacent to The Bogeyman -- in Rd 2.

This gives everyone an opportunity to think of a way to get the Imp, Itch.

Keep in mind that Magnius, Yaos and The Bogeyman are aware of an illusory Fireball that was cast from the forest behind you, but are unsure for what purpose.

Male Human Investigator 3/Inquisitor 5

Ray, does Itch fly away and THEN become invisible, or does he become invisible FIRST before flying away??

I ruled that he flew 200 feet and then became Invisible.

HP 40/45, AC 21*, Fort +4, Ref +6, Will +8, ArcRes 2/8 Active Effects: Heightened Senses, Defending Bone (45), Extended Shield, Unseen Servant,

So everyone knows what square he's in, assuming they can see 200 feet. Which means...

As Itch approached him, Azlain watched him, waiting...

Take 10 on Spellcraft to Identify Invisibility SLA as Itch uses it. Use 1 point from my Arcane Reservoir to Counter the Invisibility effect as an Immediate action. Since I have Invisibility memorized I get a +5 to the check.

Dispel check: 1d20 + 7 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 7 + 5 = 21 If that's higher than Itch's SLA DC (10+ 1/2 HD + charisma mod), the spell is countered

Since Exploits are SLAs also, I don't have to do anything obvious to make this happen. I'd like to try to Bluff Itch so that he doesn't know I'm the source of his spell failing.

Bluff: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (3) + 13 = 16

All that was done as an Immediate action. Once I see the results of the dispel check, I'll post my action for the round.

Can we see or hear Azlain? Do we need a perception roll, is he in plain sight or nowhere to be seen?
