Count Marcus Phandros
Grand-Count and Patriarch of House Phandros

.

Smiling broadly at The Bogeyman:
Count Marcus answers way too quickly.

"Done."

And he reaches out with open palm to seal a Lawful pact: You hunt down the Bellflower agents who assassinated Francesco Phandros and he makes sure the infamy of 'The Bogeyman' stays renowned in Westcrown even when you aren't here.

In the presence of Count Marcus:

Before proceeding, the Bogeyman ensures that the agreement is well understood.

"For as long as I am away, I will expect bards to tell cautionary tales to inspire fear in the hearts of those who would stand against the rule of our Queen. Simple enough. But you will also need to conjure some terrifying creature to play my part in the narrows," the Bogeyman explains.

That said, he extends his hand to seal the Lawful pact.

Male Human Investigator 3/Inquisitor 5

Sticking to the shadows:

Magnius decides to trail Aaron, doing his best to keep out of sight. However, he'll attempt to ascertain the general direction the other halfling goes in, to possibly track down later. Unsure if this is possible, or if I should make a roll here.

1d20 + 16 + 1d6 ⇒ (17) + 16 + (3) = 36 Stealth.

Count Marcus Phandros
Grand-Count and Patriarch of House Phandros

.

His arrangement with The Bogeyman in:
place, Count Marcus allows you to leave with an escort, two Chelaxian officers wearing the badges of the Phandros Lions. Neither speak unless spoken to, and both are respectful -- though whether it is because they know your reputation or because they represent the House and you just had a private meeting with their master, it's difficult to know.

You have time to ask questions in House Phandros if you wish. It's an easy matter to ferry a boat from the Parego Regicona to either the decrepit northern corner, Parego Dospera, or the lively peninsula, Parego Spera. Here on the island of Parego Regicona, the estates and manors are like looming fortresses, well guarded -- but full of old-money wealth and knowledge.

A pale midday sun sheds light on the river-mouth and the light rain of the morning is gone. But the pall of Westcrown remains. An old town. Drab. Cool.

.
.
.
.
If you have any ideas on where to go/ what to do, either as The Bogeyman or Lucious Difax, you can post your intentions. If you can't come up with anything, I'll post something early next week (I usually take the weekends off from PbP.)

Before leaving the estate:

"You spoke about your hunters and mentioned that House Spartaco is also searching for those responsible for your nephew's murder. I need to know who is on the case," the Bogeyman specifies to the Grand-Count before taking his leave.

.
.
.
.
.

Exiting the estate, the Bogeyman disappears into the shadows as quickly as possible...

Stealth: 1d20 + 29 ⇒ (18) + 29 = 47

...and returns to the streets of Parego Regiona in the unremarkable guise of a commoner. While coming and going in order not to draw attention, he keeps an eye on the Phandros estate. Perhaps the count's nephew was assassinated because of his reputation. Perhaps the slaves simply took advantage of the opportunity. More likely, the murder was premeditated and there are Bellflower agents in the Grand Count's palace itself. The vermin are everywhere...

GM:

I can't seem to roll dice in PM, so here goes:
Knowledge, Local: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Yuck.

Aaron Smallbridge
Bellflower Network Sympathizer, Halfling in Westcrown,

.

Magnius follows the Halfling from:
a distance, observing him as he drinks another potion, this one changing his features to look like a completely different person -- a wicked-looking Gnome.

And Aaron Smallbridge leaves Westcrown.

Nervously looking over his shoulder (Perception): 1d20 + 15 + 1d6 ⇒ (18) + 15 + (4) = 37

He travels north for a mile into the Longmarch before turning west. From there he travels another mile-and-a-half before the scrub-trees and topography flattens to the more parched lands leading to the Turanian Hills.

Here, it is evident that following Aaron Smallbridge will get considerably more risky. Not only will it become much easier for him to see someone following him, but also if he is going to a place where other Bellflower Network agents are, Magnius could become quickly outnumbered. And for how many hours, Magnius must wonder, will Aaron be walking.

But Aaron Smallbridge is leaving some tracks for a survivalist to follow. Hopefully Yaos can summon something to track -- or you can recruit someone is Westcrown to join you. Or something.

Unless, of course, Magnius decides to attack Aaron Smallbridge here, alone in the Longmarch.

Count Marcus Phandros
Grand-Count and Patriarch of House Phandros

.

Count Marcus answers The Bogeyman easily:
"My own hunters, well, one group came up empty and the other group disappeared; divination magic confirms they're dead. Both groups were typically mixed, each with a House Lion Cavalier andbacked-up with some divine and arcane magic assistance as well as combat and rogue skills. Typical parties.

"Count Vocaturo Spartaco sent his best man, a Kitsune named Baron Valsecchi, to find the Bellflower assassins. I never bothered to learn much about a Spartaco Baron."

Rainaka Phandros
Wizard, unmarried Lady of Phandros aged 18

.

Rainaka looks somewhat confused at Azlain's dialog and:
responds, "Oh. Yeah then I guess you want to meet with the Grand-Count. Um, can I get you anything?"

The young Lady Rainaka completely missed your friendly flirting. It was nonsensical to her; they were just words that seemed to not have any meaning or implication.

But "clandestine" and "HellKnight mission" and "duplicity" ARE words she knows, and knows that you need to speak not with her. "He's my great-uncle, Azlain, not my father." It's not a correction or a rebuttal and it's not given with any negative tone. Just a point of academic fact. Not unlike when she almost mentioned a second ago that you used "who" when you should have used "whom." Rainaka Phandros is a pedant. A cloistered librarian of a girl wizard. But her cat seems to understand everything -- the way housecats often look. And this one is a Magical Beast.

"I just received an arcane Message; the Grand-Count can see you now. I can take you to him."

HP 40/45, AC 21*, Fort +4, Ref +6, Will +8, ArcRes 2/8 Active Effects: Heightened Senses, Defending Bone (45), Extended Shield, Unseen Servant,

Azlain Swipes Left:

"Most appreciated." Azlain said with a polite smile, following the young woman. It was nice of her to reveal her insufferability so quickly.

Azlain kept up his flirtatious demeanor just to irritate the cat.

Male Human Investigator 3/Inquisitor 5

Thankfully Magnius:

Has some small skill in tracking, and studies those left behind by Aaron, attempting to ascertain a rough destination.

1d20 + 15 ⇒ (11) + 15 = 26 Survival

Taking 10 + 1d6 ⇒ 3 for a 28 on Society, to try and figure out what might lay in the direction Aaron is heading in.

After he's done, the inquisitor makes a mark of the Godclaw some place out of the way, so he knows where to return to later on.

He then returns to his condo with Yaos, to fill her in on his day.

Count Marcus Phandros
Grand-Count and Patriarch of House Phandros

.

Azlain is ushered to:
a large, unadorned chamber guarded by two Phandros Lion officers. Lady Rainaka ignores them completely as she casts a simple spell that unlocks the door to gain entrance. On the left wall of the room lies a massive fireplace dwarfing a tiny wood fire and a reddish-purple Imp bejeweled with magical items and reading a spellbook. Without looking up at you the Imp returns to his invisible state, presumably still sitting on the floor of the fireplace reading. Outside of the fireplace, on the chamber floor, is a large sitting-circle ringed by shells, enchanted to stay on the floor. A door on the far wall, fireplace side, is closed, and on the opposite side a spiral staircase ascends to another floor. Standing adjacent to the staircase, Grand-Count Marcus Phandros ceases his conversation with some invisible creature behind him when you and Lady Rainaka enter. The girl excuses herself from the Grand-Count’s presence by his nod to her, and you have your audience.

The patriarch of House Pahndros has sleek, acutely-cut black hair and a wide goatee that frames his handsomely evil face and dark violet eyes. His noble’s robe is fastened by a radiant, platinum brooch of the famed Phandros Lion and covers a set of mithral breastplate armor. The bastard sword that hangs rigid from his hip silently crackles with eldritch lightning. The man himself appears aged forty, but his true age is likely double that.

”So,” he addresses you as the two of you look each other over, ”you wished to have an audience with me. I must be brief, Azlain, as I have quite a number of tasks to conquer this day.”

Magnius notes the:
rural area well and marks a spot with his symbol. He is confident of being able to find the place again, and somewhat confident of being able to find Aaron Smallbridge's tracks again.

Back in Westcrown's Parego Spera at the Arvanxi condo, Yaos is not present. Waiting and watching is an option, as is going downstairs to ask the dentist who works on the first floor if he has seen The Red Widow.

Finally, Magnius could leave a note and go into the Parego Spera to search something else out, to return later.

Casually strolling through the Parego Regicona in the guise of a common Chelaxian, The Bogeyman:
notes a number of fortified mansions, most surrounded by canals acting a moats. House Arvanxi, House Oberigo, House Charthagnion, House Salisfer, House Dioso, House Rosala, and even some of the smaller Houses, Imvius and Xerysis, Aulamaxa, Mhartis and Rasdovain, and House Nymmis. Some are more obviously guarded than others. Some are more in need of restoration than others. And sit under the pall that is intrinsic to Westcrown.

One observation is certain: Commoners do not loiter or casually sashay or stroll through the Parego Regicona. The lesser people here walk purposefully to complete a task. And they don't lift up their gaze from the patch of dust in front of them except to politely ask for direction. Hellknights from The Order of the Scourge, in squads of four, occasionally as a commoner for his or her paperwork. If it were not for your great acumen for stealth, some Westcrown guards may have spotted you at the wrong time -- looking too closely at a set of gables or walking a bit too nonchalantly. You avoid the Hellknights completely.

But it's possible even these several minutes have been sufficient, having observed the wealthy district for a while you have observed no unusual aspects, superficially, about House Phandros.

No unusual comings or goings for House Phandros. No flying devils swoop in on the roof, or depart from a window. The guards, Phndros Lions all, have a regimented but varied routine, enough that it is clear their patrol schedules are randomized by intelligent design. And, like the rest of Parego Regicona, the House is quiet.

Careful not to draw attention:

The commoner makes his way out of the Parego Regicona, and back to the safety of Parego Spera. There, he assumes the guise of the popular Lucius Difax.

Stealth: 1d20 + 29 ⇒ (6) + 29 = 35

Ever affable, he meets old friends and makes new ones in the inns and taverns of the district, while making discreet inquiries into House Spartaco and this Kitsune named Baron Valsecchi...

Diplomacy to gather information: 1d20 + 29 ⇒ (8) + 29 = 371d2 ⇒ 1 (1 hour)

Male Human Investigator 3/Inquisitor 5

Around what time of day is it by the time Magnius returns to the condo?

Westcrown; Parego Spera
The Gargling Gargoyle

.

Lucius Difax, back in his comfortable Parego Spera, spends:
a remarkably productive hour in what at first seemed like a hopeless cause-- finding more information on House Spartaco.

Hanging out with old co-conspirators at the colossal Arodennama statue of Aroden, casually talking to sergeants-of-law and city guards near the Lord Mayor's manor, speaking with an ex-girlfriend at one of the Pegasi Bridges, no one has heard of anything regarding House Spartaco. Some few have heard of the small House in the rural west of Longmarch Archduchy. Someone said that Count Vocaturo Spartaco's nickname is 'The Lion of Justice' (doesn't know why). And a third person had heard that there was a marriage between a minor nobody from House Phandros and a Spartaco (but not that the marriage was called off or certainly not that the Phandros was killed.)

Forty minutes into Lucius Difax's fruitless search you find yourself at The Gargling Gargoyle -- Westcrown's best haunt for all things social -- where another twenty minutes of casual conversation regarding House Spartaco go by before you hit the jackpot.

That's when an Imp with eggshell-white skin and a gray cloak of what look like webs trimmed in brown leather appears adjacent to you from invisibility. A tattoo of the heraldry of House Oberigo -- one of the major Houses of the Longmarch Archduchy, equal in power to Arvanxi and Phandros, and almost even Charthagnion -- is artistically rendered on the Imp's left forearm.

"I was sent out this afternoon to find out any information on House Spartaco, too -- for my Oberigo Mistress. We should go meet her together." And the Imp gestures for mutual departure.

Countess Tanith Oberigo
Matriarch of House Oberigo

.

Lucius Difax quickly finds himself on:
a comfortable divan in a modern and stylish carriage with the eggshell-white Imp, an impressive House bodyguard in black, skin-tight robes, and Countess Tanith Oberigo herself.

The Lady veritably exudes wealth and political power, but she talks with the near-nasally whine of a dilettante.

"I've heard enough of Phandros, Spartaco and Arvanxi in the past few days to keep my ears constantly pricked up, young man." Outside the carriage rolls through Westcrown but no cobblestones bump your seat and no cacophony of passersby assails your hearing. It's as though you're in a Private Sanctum or even a demi-plane while inside the Oberigo carriage.

"I know Phandros tried to make alliance with Spartaco recently because they found some gold -- and Count Vocaturo has a strong reputation. But I also know the alliance fell through. But now I hear Arvanxi -- and even House Battori! -- are approaching the little House?!

"Perhaps you can shed some light on this. Why, praytell, are you asking after House Spartaco?"

HP 40/45, AC 21*, Fort +4, Ref +6, Will +8, ArcRes 2/8 Active Effects: Heightened Senses, Defending Bone (45), Extended Shield, Unseen Servant,

Azlain meets with Count von Count:

"I appreciate your time, Count Phandros. I am glad that you know who I am. That will certainly save time. I'll be brief and skip the usual niceties in favor of efficiency. I am here mostly as a courtesy from the Orders of the Scourge and the Rack to inform you that I'll be operating in your territory for a few weeks. As my mission will likely have me working undercover, I may be at odds with your Sheriff and his men. I wanted to ensure that if I am arrested and need to maintain my cover, that you will understand the situation ahead of time."

"Further, I was hoping to impose upon you for the contact information of any competent operatives that you know to be loyal, but who would not be easily traced back to you."

In the carriage:

"It is my honour to meet you," Lucius greets the Countess with proper reverence. He names her titles and flatters her ego, commenting on the beauty of her necklace, the powerful reputation of her family, and her own great renown as a socialite and patron of the arts.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 29 ⇒ (12) + 29 = 41

"As for this whole matter, I am not sure that I will be of much use to you. You seem to know far more than I do about this Spartaco gold rush. My intention was to find members of House Spartaco to propose my services, figuring that they could use someone who knows the city and that they have the means if the rumours are true. But I did not know that their alliance with Phandros was no more. Or that Houses Arvanxi and Battori had approached these newcomers..."

"Perhaps I can convey your interest to House Spartaco if ever I find their people?" Lucius offers, seeing an opportunity to make friends in high place.

Bluff: 1d20 + 27 ⇒ (19) + 27 = 46

For the record, most of what he is saying is true: 1) his intent is indeed to seek out House Spartaco and offer assistance, 2) he had not assumed that the alliance with Phandros was broken, and 3) he had no idea that Arvanxi and Battori were interested... But obviously, he is concealing his dealings with Phandros!

Male Human Investigator 3/Inquisitor 5

Maginus does indeed go downstairs, but not to inquire about Yaos' whereabouts. Instead, he makes his way to the nearest tavern, and gets himself a table. Walking up to the bar, he inquires about one Lucius Difax. 1d20 + 24 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 24 + (2) = 27 Gather Info

Count Marcus Phandros
Grand-Count and Patriarch of House Phandros

.

Looking at Azlain skeptically:
Count Marcus raises an eyebrow. "I appreciate the courtesy call." It is clear by the look on his face and the manner in which he speaks that the Grand-Count does not consider this a courtesy call but rather a required visit if you are operating in his arena. But one still refers to it as 'a courtesy' and one still shows appreciation.

"Undercover work is lawful, and I acquiesce to the HellKnight's operations. ....But knowledge of my own operatives -- they are *all* competent and loyal -- is restricted by my own lawful prerogative. If you want to talk to any of them, you must first convince me to tell you. Perhaps you should begin by giving me some information regarding your clandestine task.

"And as far as the sheriff, well, you should probably talk to the Lord Mayor. Grand-Count Aberian Arvanxi may only waste Westcrown's wealth on his opera houses, but there's no harm in letting him know."

Count Marcus is clearly not impressed with the Lord Mayor of Westcrown and you get the impression that he would love to be awarded the title himself. Certainly based on your first impression of the Phandros Patriarch, he is more suited to run a city the size and importance of Westcrown than what you've heard of the incompetent dilettante. Perhaps there's no need at all to talk to the Lord Mayor; Westcrown's decaying state has gotten worse since Count Aberian Arvanxi became Lord Mayor -- not better.

Westcrown; Parego Spera
The Gargling Gargoyle

.

Magnius quickly finds what passes for:
the hub of social activity in Westcrown, The Gargling Gargoyle tavern in Parego Spera, under the shadow of the colossal Arodennama statue of Aroden, just on the other side of one of the beautiful Pegasi Bridges over a canal. The Gargoyle's tongue has been artistically forked like a snake and, indicative of all tongues infernal, the patrons in the Gargling Gargoyle seem well-inclined to talk as though with forked tongues themselves.

It is only a few minutes when Magnius learns that Lucius Difax, well known humanitarian and philanthropist, sympathetic to Halflings and opposed to slavery -- was in The Gargling Gargoyle only a half hour ago asking about House Spartaco, a lesser House under Charthagnion that tends a minor rural County out west. He left with an Imp whose skin was eggshell-white but will probably be back soon.

Countess Tanith Oberigo
Matriarch of House Oberigo

.

Pleased with Lucius Difax, his charm and awe:
Countess Tanith speaks before thinking, "No! Do not tell House Spartaco of my interest. These things are best kept between us." And she uses her eyes the way women can. And her voice. She leans forward, "We just need to figure out what you want that a Countess can provide. You'll meet the Count in Gheradescci County; I can sense it. Find out why the other great Houses are showing an interest in The Lion of Justice and bring that information to me or my agent," she gestures absentmindedly to the eggshell-white Imp, "and we'll get you what you want." Her offer made she leans back waiting for your reply. And the carriage continues to roll.

Then, as you begin a reply, simultaneously she appears to be listening to some telepathic or arcane message. Capable of listening to two speakers at once, she listens to you both.

In the carriage:

"Of course I will keep the secret of your interest," he reassures her, smitten by her charm and good manners. "And of course I will share with you what little I learn."

"Now," he continues with a smile, "what is it that you think that I want?"

HP 40/45, AC 21*, Fort +4, Ref +6, Will +8, ArcRes 2/8 Active Effects: Heightened Senses, Defending Bone (45), Extended Shield, Unseen Servant,

Count von Count is counting all wrong:

"I am afraid I must decline." Azlain said politely. "Your deniability in this matter is paramount. Not to put too fine a point on it, but the less you know, the better it is for you, personally."

"That fact is why this meeting is discretionary, and not required by usual protocol. I prefer to be up front about my intentions, even when the nature of my duties require I cannot be so honest with my actions"

"I hope you can appreciate that I am trying to walk a fine line between the respect I feel nobility is due, and the informational security of a delicate mission."

"What I can tell you is that my intent is to strengthen the grip of the Empire in this area. If I am successful, strong leadership will be needed to steer the course of expansion."

Yaos replies to Bellma's question with:

"I believe there are a couple of things you could help me with Bellma. When we first entereed the city I saw a female Tielfing with her own retinue. Unlike so many of her peers in Westcrown, her evening gown appeared loud and garish. She walked.. violently erect, as though she were Queen Abrogail. And she carries a platinum rod and bejeweled handbag. She had a crowd of sycophants following her, vying to impress her with their insight into the opera, apparently unafraid of the Shadows so long as they remain in the Tiefling’s presence.

Would you know anything of this lady and where she can be found? She is obviously a genuine individual.

Again on arrival I saw a fishing boat called 'Captain Black’s 4th’ docking on the Parego Spera wharf.
The captain, likely the eponymous Captain Black, caught my attention. He was clearly unafraid of the dark, unlike his crew. He wore a glossy black breastplate, odd for a man who works in water, which appeared enchanted to me, and these matters I know, as did many other accouterments on his person. Why such an accomplished man as Captain Black would be captaining a small fishing boat instead of a warship in Cheliax’s navy is a mystery.

Do you know anything of this Captain Black? His past, and perhaps where he can be located? "

Male Human Investigator 3/Inquisitor 5

Magnius opts:

to just wait out Lucius. He smiles at those who have helped provide him the information he sought. "Drinks all around barkeep! Round's on me!" He says.

He tries to recall if he had heard anything of this well-known supporter of halflings. 1d20 + 18 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 18 + (5) = 24 K: Society, what do I know of Lucius Difax?

Countess Tanith Oberigo
Matriarch of House Oberigo

.

The matriarch of House Oberigo barely looks at Lucius Difax as she:
answers, "What you want? ....Honey I barely know your name. And before you started asking around earlier today, hadn't even heard that. I don't know what you want or why you're looking into the affairs of House Spartaco."

Countess Tanith, full of hot charm and calculating guile, is between curious and concerned. But she's always hungry. She knows something is going on with the little House Spartaco that is making larger Houses show interest. But she doesn't know what. She likely assumes Lucius Difax is working for someone, maybe Arvanxi or Phandros or Salisfer -- and she wants to offer you something better than they. You seem to know more than she, and if you're talented you could be of good use to her. But she must be careful since she doesn't know for whom you work -- and intriguing enough to get you to work for her.

"You can tell me what you want, Lucius Difax, or you can wait to negotiate after you've visited Gheradescci County and return here. House Oberigo can pay almost anything if the information is valuable enough -- you know our reputation." There is a slight edge to that last; Oberigo's largess is known -- but so is their wrath.

"And after what I've just been told," she circles her slender pale finger around her temple indicating telepathic communication, "you've a reputation for giving sympathy to the wrong crowd. It'd be a great help to you if a powerful House -- such as as mine -- were to help you out of a hole were your reputation were to draw the attentions of the HellKnights."

Countess Tanith lets that sink in before bidding you adieu, answering any questions before the carriage halts, in front of the Gargling Gargoyle where you began.

Count Marcus Phandros
Grand-Count and Patriarch of House Phandros

.

Nodding to Azlain in curious understanding:
Count Marcus accepts, "Very well, Azlain, keep your own counsel. If there is a reckoning, I will keep an open mind." And his voice becomes stern, or rather, more stern since the rigidity of this man seems intrinsically acute, "But should your deeds require my attention, I shall insist being told. ....Hopefully it will not come to that."

The Grand-Count looks at Azlain for a moment, assuming their meeting is at its conclusion, but allows for any further comment or question.

Westcrown; Parego Spera
The Gargling Gargoyle

.

Magnius waits only ten minutes:
before someone points out the arrival of Lucius Difax, a known socialite in Westcrown, extraordinarily talented in roguish trickery -- who is suspected of being sympathetic to slaves and promoting what the Iomedaeits pass as virtue. Why he has not yet been arrested by HellKnights is confounding. Either he never gets caught or he has a powerful ally or, who knows. Maybe his reputation is a lie.

Lucius Difax is exiting a fabulously wealthy carriage. Inside you catch a glimpse of an eggshell-white Imp and none other than the matriarch of House Obergio herself, Countess Tanith Oberigo. The two exchange parting words, and Lucius Difax begins making his way to The Gargling Gargoyle.

In the carriage:
Without prolonging the discussion any further, Lucius wishes Countess Tanith all the best, and promises to visit her soon...

The Gargling Gargoyle:
Lucius returns to the tavern where everyone knows his name. He has very little time to ponder upon the meaning and importance of his recent encounter with the countess before the barkeep whispers in his ear that there is a man looking for him. The barkeep points to the man in question, and Lucius introduces himself immediately. Better to take the first step.

"Lucius Difax at your service," he says with a flourish before taking a seat.

Captain Black
former Naval Captain, Divorced from House Aulamaxa

Bellma answers by inviting Yaos in:
the conversation with her other customers, offering a relaxing divan and some incense should you not wish another bath.

Mary and and Mikaela and Maudette had been talking about Mary's affair with a young man, cuckolding her older husband. But with the addition of so strong a force of personality as Yaos, the girls begin talking about these two of whom the Red Widow asks.

Captain Black was married to an Aulamaxa Lady. Old Chelaxian House. Never prominent or extraordinarily powerful. Well known wizards. Maudette swears her little sister seduced one of the young men to bed once. The ladies all smile and vicariously experience the idea of memory with a noble. And House Aulamaxa men are sexy. The House serves Oberigo -- very powerful House. Countess Tanith Oberigo is as wicked as they come, shame she's starting to show her age, the matriarch used to be So beautiful....

Captain Black was a renowned naval captain, sinking pirate ships and bringing Andoran ships to the lawful justice they deserve. But he was never the brightest. Of course, who needs brains when your brawn is so, you know,.... And the ladies giggle more. They enjoy looking at Captain Black from time to time coming in off the water, strapping and strong. But his imagination is quite limited. Who names their boats 'My 1st,' 'My 2nd,' 'My 3rd,' etc.

And of course, without a noble upbringing and his naturally chaotic personality, it was only a matter of time before his dumb bravado got him into trouble. Mikaela heard he angered some uppity-up from House CHARTHAGNION! And you know if that was the case House Oberigo would force House Aulamaxa to end the marriage. But Bellma heard from her customer's cousin's husband's boss that Captain Black made a sexual advance to Countess Tanith Oberigo herself and that, flattered, the matriarch didn't kill the twit, just ruined his marriage with House Aulamaxa.

In any case, whatever happened happened after he lost his ship in a storm chasing some pirates too close to Abendego! A Charthagnion ship was luckily returning from Sargava and was close enough to receive the wizard-talk call-for-help so they got rescued. But he was going to be put under investigation for losing a ship and half a crew of loyal Chelaxians anyway.

Now he just works as a fisherman. Mary is adamant, though, that she'd still sleep with him. Maudette, Mikaela and Bellma all agree. But with his chaotic and short-sighted personality, his marriage to House Aulamaxa was probably doomed from the beginning.

Tiefling Woman in Westcrown
Mysterious and Powerful

.

Yaos sees that Bellma,:
Mary, Mikaela and Maudette all know the mystery Tiefling with the platinum rod. But none really do. She's been in Westcrown just on three weeks now -- from the Capital. She spends her days talking to the Lord Mayor, Grand-Count Aberian Arvanxi, and is rumored to be in Westcrown only temporarily for a major job for Queen Abrogail Thrune.

Mikaela heard that the Tiefling was going to take over Westcrown, sending the Lord Mayor to Hell early. But no one knows what House she's from if that's true.

Maudette is certain that the Tiefling is here not to replace Grand-Count Aberian Arvanxi but prepare instead to replace ArchHeathen Kettermaul Charthagnion of Corentyn as the Arch Duke of Longmarch.

Mary heard the Tiefling was here to drive out all the Shadows.

Bellma knows better to spread gossip about one as powerful as the Tiefling appears to be -- especially one sent from Her Infernal Majestrix!

At the Gargling Gargoyle Lucius Difax and Magnius meet. The tavern is not so busy that everyone and his cousin is within an eavesdropping area of effect, but neither is there so much noise that those who are so inclined as to eavesdrop would have to strain their ears to overhear whatever conversation Magnius and Lucius Difax may have.

A public conversation may be overheard. Taking a private room in the back in which to have some privacy may be conspicuous.

Male Human Investigator 3/Inquisitor 5

Nodding his head:

In greeting, Magnius extends his hand in greeting. "Well met. My name is Magnius, and I've heard your name come up recently in regards to some farmers that I would like to do business with. "

Yaos joins in the girl talk:
even the saucy kind in a restrained way, trying to put the ladies at their ease while behaving appropriately given her higher social standing.

"Do any of you know what happened to his wife? Is this a tragic love story, where they are in love but separated by cruel fate?"asks the Red Widow.

Non_Player Character wrote:

"I will have to look more closely at this fallen captain. To asses for myself his... nautical capabilities."Yaos's smile and sparkling eyes suggest she is not speaking of his sailing ability at all."I think I had best warn the good captain of the risk of him being abducted by a quartet of women planning to hold him to pander to their desires."

Mary, Mikaela and Maudette all know the mystery Tiefling with the platinum rod. But none really do.

Bellma knows better to spread gossip about one as powerful as the Tiefling appears to be -- especially one sent from Her Infernal Majestrix!

Yaos thanks the ladies for the information, and after some friendly words takes her leave. Afterwards, she will use the diplomacy skill to gather information about Captain Black and his former wife.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28

Yaos learns little:
more from the gossiping girls, though she makes friends easily. Lady Aulamaxa is still unwed though the patriarch is trying to find someone good enough for his noble daughter; it was difficult enough to find a noble for her hand in marriage even before her divorce to a commoner (powerful as he was). And now that House Oberigo won't promote a second marriage to Lady Aulamaxa, prospects are dim.

As far as more information, little is to be had from Bellma and her customers. Back in the Parego Spera, seeing the sights of Westcrown-- from the beautiful Pegasi Bridges over the canals, the grand fortified estates across the river on the isle of Parego Regicona, the colossal Arodennama statue of Aroden, and even the Lord Mayor's lavish manor, the Parego Spera is truly Westcrown.

It takes very little time for Yaos to learn that for information, not merely gossip, the tavern called The Gargling Gargoyle is the best place in Westcrown.

Azlain and the Count:

"Thank you, m'lord. Before I go, I do have one question which may help my mission. I will be operating primarily in the Gheradescci region, so any information you have on the current state of affairs there is appreciated. Also, while I hope it will not come to this, but it is possible that I may need some kind of cooperative leverage over House Spartaco. Any information of what to offer as trade, or what to bring up to facilitate negotiations would be helpful."

Count Marcus Phandros
Grand-Count and Patriarch of House Phandros

.

Azlain gets a curious:
look from the Phandros patriarch, and a thoughtful pause. The conversation has turned. "I do not *freely* give knowledge of weaknesses of other Houses. As for trade, well, you know my price: I want to know what you are doing. The knowledge I have of The Lion of Justice may or may not be able to help you and I do not have comprehensive insight into House Spartaco.

"Gheradescci County is at the western edge of Longmarch Archduchy; Westcrown is the eastern edge." He says it dismissively, as though House Phandros could not care less about the minor House so far from his Seat of power. But you know that there was a recently arranged marriage between the two Houses. Most people in the political scene in Cheliax do. And Count Marcus would know that Azlain knows of the arrangement. Just as the patriarch would know that Azlain knows the wedding was called off at the last minute. You know. He knows. He knows you know and you know he knows that you know.

But he says nothing.

It is only a question, he must be thinking, of if you will ask. If you will show more of your hand in the card game of intrigue. How much does Azlain know?, the Grand Count must surely be thinking. How will he phrase further questions, revealing how much of the situation he is aware.

The Gargling Gargoyle:

Lucius Difax studies the man before him for a brief moment, immediately understanding his meaning. Warily, Lucius discreetly looks around to see if the man is either accompanied or being spied upon.

Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 30

"Magnius...?" he asks, interested in knowing exactly who now is calling upon him after such a busy day.

HP 40/45, AC 21*, Fort +4, Ref +6, Will +8, ArcRes 2/8 Active Effects: Heightened Senses, Defending Bone (45), Extended Shield, Unseen Servant,

Azlain baits traps by pointing out where they are:

Azlain was realizing the sort of man the Count was. The kind of man who could raise a daughter with a knack for understanding dangerous magics, but none for understanding people. The kind of man who would discard warnings from people he considered beneath him. The kind of man who's ambition overshadowed his loyalty.

Nobles were almost too easy. Of all sins, Vanity was the one that made people the most vulnerable. If Count Marcus had been his mark, Azlain would have him dangling on a hook already.

It was the Count's lucky day though. Azlain was feeling helpful. He'd just hand Marcus the hook. It was up to him if he decided to skewer himself with it or not.

"I advise caution here, M'lord." Azlain said, a genuine warning slipping into his respectful and diplomatic tone. "I explained the nature of my duty to you, and I told you that part of my duty was to protect you through keeping you ignorant. Knowing the truth of this will not benefit you."

"Knowledge has a price. Sometimes the juice is not worth the squeeze.

"Is knowing my mission what you truly want?"

Count Marcus Phandros
Grand-Count and Patriarch of House Phandros

.

Well Azlain, it seems:
"as though our discussion is at its conclusion." It's hard to say whether Count Marcus is disappointed at not learning Azlain's mysterious agenda. But he's clearly not going to give information about a noble House without something significant in return. Yet there is no tension, "I emphasize again my appreciation for your courteous visit and stand by my words. I will keep an open mind should your testimony be called upon by those higher than we." He appears genuine, and nods in display of respect. "And now I shall bid you adieu."

He slightly turns his head back to the empty air behind him, where you suspect an invisible creature has been attending him, and retrieves a parchment that he begins reading.

The Imp that has been standing at attention in the corner of the great fireplace, adjacent to the tiny fire, approaches and prepares to see you out. "Let me know, Mr. Wizard, whether I can get you more wine, or if there is anything else I can do to serve." The Imp is clearly not a servant; his eyes are too sharp, looking at you without deference. And of course, you remember he was studying his own spellbook, cross-legged on the floor of the fireplace, when you were admitted to the chamber by Lady Rainaka.

Westcrown; Parego Spera
The Gargling Gargoyle

.

The Gargling Gargoyle is not terribly busy, and while none are focusing attention toward the well known Lucius Difax (who himself just conspicuously met with Countess Tanith Oberigo), his conversation with a second powerful-looking individual in Magnius, could not go unnoticed. This is Cheliax.

Outside the tavern a third distinguished individual enters. Yaos Battori, The Red Widow has arrived.

.

Spoiler:

Right now there is no one who would know that Yaos and Magnius are allies. Feel free to Discuss out of Gameplay if you want to keep it this way, Yaos on one end of the bar and Magnius & Lucius Difax on the other, for example. Or obviously she can join you two either as an ally of Magnius, or as a stranger who sees two peers in a tavern surrounded by smallfolk.

Azlain was surprised:

Count Marcus was smarter than he'd first appeared. Azlain bowed and turned to leave. When the Imp addressed him he he shook his head. "No, thank you. I will be on my way. If you wish, you can tell your master that I was impressed by his conduct. I have found that knowing when to refuse knowledge is a rare lesson among nobles. It speaks to his character that he counts caution and loyalty above ambition."

"I have a suspicion that you have been ordered to watch me for a while, so I'll make your task easier. I passed a place call ed the Gargling Gargyle on my way here. If you need to spy on me, that os where I'll be."

Headed to the Gargling Gargoyle.

Yaos arrives:
at "The Gargling Gargoyle" looking absolutely stunning and looks calmly around at the other patrons. She sees Magnius conversing with what is clearly another significant aristocrat and decides not to interrupt Magnius for the present and goes and purchases a glass of good red wine and begins conversing with other patrons, hoping to turn the conversation to Captain Black and his former wife.

If I get to roll diplomacy to gather information I rolled in my last post, getting 28. I can roll again if DM Ray wants.

Itch, the Imp
Imp servitor of Barbados, House Phandros

.

On the ferry from Perego Regicona to Perego Spera, Azlain:
again thinks through his brief time in Westcrown: His departure from The Darklight Sisterhood and his search the Delvehaven, his meetings both at Taranik House and Citadel Rivad, his meeting with Marcus Phandros.

A potential prize so astounding as to be heretical, one that could shed light on some of the darkest moments in all of Cheliax and maybe more. It's within his grasp. Just west of rural Gheradescci County. But that's a dangerous stretch of badlands. Pathfinders may blindly go into a search like this, only to die in the ruins they're discovering. But not those who are with the Darklight Sisterhood.

Azlain knows he needs help; and if Phandros won't tell him about Spartaco, well maybe he'll just have to find someone who will. The cobbled paths of Parego Spera are busy, but all too quiet to be called bustling. This is Westcrown. And The Gargling Gargoyle is just ahead.

Then an Imp appears in front of him.

Itch speaks to Azlain:
with a raspy voice from behind voluminous brown robes, undulating beneath his cloven feet hanging in the air as he floats at eye level with the Chelaxian.

One can barely see that the tiny creature is indeed an Imp, hiding behind his cowl, Holy Symbol to Barbatos clasping his robe over his devilish figure.

Itch speaks with a graven voice, as Barbatos would himself, from his pit in Hell. "Greetings Wizard. I am Itch, free Imp. You are Azlain. We are having a mutual friend who telleth me you wanted information on the Chelaxians in Gheradescci County, Count Vocaturo and such.

"They are allies with mine enemies, and so I would like to join with you, who I thinketh is also enemy of House Spartaco. Have I heard correctly?"

The Imp hovers just in front of you. He even smells the way you would imagine Barbatos smells, earthy, graveyard sulfur. You could imagine that Itch is a miniature of Barbatos, hiding behind his hood.

HP 40/45, AC 21*, Fort +4, Ref +6, Will +8, ArcRes 2/8 Active Effects: Heightened Senses, Defending Bone (45), Extended Shield, Unseen Servant,

Azlain likes imps:

"Indeed, Itch. You've heard rightly." Azlain said. "My apologies for assuming you a servant. Free imps are quite rare on this plane."

"Tell me more. I think we can come to an arrangement."

Azlain tapped his sleeve. "Wake up, Mindy. You'll probably want to meet our new acquaintance."

HP 22/22

Azlain better have woken me up for a good reason...:

Out of Azlain's sleeve a sleepy red viper slithered it's head onto the back of Azlain's hand. It gave him a flat reptilian stare that spoke volumes about how much it appreciated it's nap being interrupted. Then it spied the imp.

"Oh." the serpent said. "Hello."

With a short twisting of smoke and fire the serpent was replaced by another imp. This one was an attractive female that looked quite a bit like a miniature succubus wearing scandalously little. She flapped off of Azlain's hand.

"I'm Mindy."

The Gargling Gargoyle:

Are there bards or any others nearby who could be called upon to distract any potential eavesdroppers? Perhaps some louder music could help to ensure some level of discretion?
