First in the fray against the criminal Halflings, Magnius Arvanxi lands a blow against the dazed Magus, Avarin Littlehat, acid burning further into the Bellflower's wound. Still shrugging off the effects of the arcane fireball, the trident-wielding leader can make no riposte -- but still standing, begins to clear his head in order to reply in kind to Magnius Arvanxi.
.
.
.
.
But then Yaos Battori, The Red Widow, stands almost regally and conjures even more infernal allies to the fray -- knowing that Pale Wing is already in place.

From the two Darklands-leading tunnels the Earth Elementals originally blocking any possible escape charge forth, the first (incidentally flanking with Magnius Arvanxi) hits Avarin Littlehat with a clubbing, rock-fist. The second also pummels the Halfling Magus, sending Avarin Littlehat unconscious and bleeding out.

A third Earth Elemental charges the Halfling Slayer Arlo Yellowknuckle -- he-who--slayed-Francesco-Phandros -- wildly missing the Bellflower agent.

A fourth Earth Elemental misses the Half-Elf Cleric, Amina of Iomedae.

The final Earth Elemental slams into the Halfling Investigator, Aaron Smallbridge, further hurting the Bellflower agent.

Meanwhile, from the labyrinthine tunnels leading to the base of the sycamore far above, the aerial leopards swoop in. One critically hits Arlo Yellowknuckle while the others miss. Two hit the Half-Elf Cleric, Amina (one of them only due to Flanking). Others continue the assault on the Halfling Investigator, leaving Aaron Smallbridge unconscious and bleeding out.

The last of the flying Leopards flock around the unconscious Avarin Littlehat, sending him from unconsciousness to death.
.
.
.
.
An instant later The Bogeyman reveals his visage, leaving the two remaining Bellflower Network agents, Arlo Yellowknuckle and Amina, terrified.

Bellflower Network Letters:

Among the adventuring equipment on the Halfling freedom-fighters Avarin Littlehat, Arlo Yellowknuckle and Arnam Goodkin, you find three documents of potential use....

First is a map of sorts that instead of having pictures has notes -- notes that are in written in the Halfling language and further, are in some complex linguistic code. But a cursory glance over the 'map' makes you feel that, if you can break the code (after translating from the Halfling language) you can discern the location of the Bellflower Wizard, Avalia Greenheart.

Second is a letter, also in Halfling and encoded, that you think refers to something in the city of Macini -- and their port.

The third letter in Halfling and encoded seems to have information about Westcrown.

The twilight minutes of evening descend upon Cheliax and those of nocturnal persuasions begin their activities.

In just over four hours midnight will come and go over Westcrown -- a six hour journey away. But it is in four hours that the Red Widow Yaos tentatively agreed to sleuth the transient Dusk Market of the mostly-abandoned and crumbling Parego Dospera district of The Twilight City. There she was going to spy on the pale agent from Pangolais, Winnow, for the Phandros Bastard, Kylian.

Because a return to Westcorwn seems logical -- a place whereto you can sell the spoils of battle, decipher the Halflings' letters, and even better equip yourselves before travelling to Gheradescci County -- this in order to proudly inform Count Vocaturo Spartaco you have successfully brought infernal justice to the Bellflower Network agents guilty of assassinating Francesco Phandros. And of course, in Westcorwn is also ParaCount Marcus Phandros -- also hungry for justice against those who assassinated his nephew.

If you can make it back to Westcrown in time to spy on Winnow, the agent from Pangolais, all the better for future contacts and favors and intelligence.

Male Human Investigator 3/Inquisitor 5

Welp. I'm a dumbass. I have 3 languages from an Int of 16, and 8 more from linguistics. Which I never chose. Because I'm dumb. I think it's safe to say, considering who he is and what he does, Magnius would know Halfling.

Looking over the papers, Magnius focuses his attention on the third one, about his home town Westcrown. He attempts to briefly decipher it, or at least crack some of the code.

1d20 + 14 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + 14 + (1) = 20 Linguistics 'crack code' check.

As the others rummage through the possessions of the fallen and attempt to decipher the Bellflower network letters – which could prove invaluable – The Bogeyman looks down at these seditious halflings with hate and disgust. Then, without a word, he crushes their jaws, committing them to silence now and forever.

"There is one more," The Bogeyman reminds them.

Previously...

The Bogeyman paces, looking down at the prisoners, his gaze promising a fate worse than death. These halflings deserve to die, but before that, they must suffer. And they must reveal to him what they know... He takes his time, at first asking simple questions to which he knows the answer to test their willingness to cooperate and to prove the price of lies...

Then, keen to uncover his enemy's secrets, he asks about the Bellflower network, about its agents and its powerful allies. He asks about safe houses and hideouts, about spies and informants. Soon, he will know everything he needs to know to destroy the Bellflower in Westcrown...

"You know who I am! Who have you told?" he finally asks the question that burns inside him and that could ruin everything... If they don't know his identity, after all, they will protest. And If they do, they will reveal who else knows. Or they will suffer.

"Don't do that, we need to interrogate them! How are we going to get answers if they can't speak?"yells Yaos as soon as she realises what the Bogeyman is doing, then moves to physically stop him if need be. Yaos is actually raising her voice, and doing so when it is not needed to make herself heard, a rare thing indeed.

A little later Yaos says to Azlain quietly "Fine work with the spell my friend. Do you have a spell that allows you to read minds? We can bring the information we need to mind then then you can read it. Otherwise, we do things the hard way.

Do I manage to stop the Bogeyman rendering our prisoners mute? I should be able to stop him after one at worst I would think.

Realising the prisoners are not going to be co-operative, Yaos takes the matter in hand, beginning by removing her mithral shirt and other clothing on her upper body aside from the cloth doing what would now be done by a bra. She then proceeds to torture the prisoners with her dagger, getting blood everywhere.

After what information that can be obtained is, she tells Aaron "I told you I would spare you the worst at the end." She then proceeds to make an incision down the spine of each of the other three, then takes an axe and separates the ribs behind the right chest from the spine, then opens the chest cavity and finally removes the lungs and places one on each shoulder. Each of the three gets to see each step performed on the others, so they know and can contemplate what is to come. Moreover, Yaos is obviously enjoying herself immensely. The screams are muffled as the Bogeyman has crushed their jaws. Yaos then cuts Aaron's throat.

Yaos then turns away, washes herself with a wineskin of water, discards and replaces the cloth on her upper body and gets dressed again.

"Ready to leave boys?"she asks, the monster gone and the refined socialite having returned.

The Bogeyman nods, pleased by his companion's work.

The Bellflower Network code broken, this document contains directions to a Druid-created, half-underground oasis in the desert outside of Macini -- roughly fifty miles southeast and only three miles off the cliffs dropping into the Inner Sea.

The Halfling Wizard, Avalia Greenheart, is there, as is another Bellflower Network Halfling, an unnamed Druid. The oasis is used as a semi-permanent base of operations, though it too will soon be scrapped as it is never safe to linger too long in one place in the Empire of Devils.

In addition to being a stopover and resting place before transportation to (and from) Andoran, it is also one of two locations (along with the Sycamore which you have cleared out) where plans are being developed to intercept a group of sea-elf slaves that House Matriarch, Countess Tanith Oberigo has recently obtained somehow and is selling to the Archduke himself, Archeathen Kettermaul Charthagnion. The ArchDuke's middle daughter, Vidame Cristante' Charthagnion, has negotiated the sale and is the target of the Bellflower Network's assault -- shortly after she is to take possession of the slaves. (Countess Tanith Oberigo is too powerful for the Bellflower Network to attack, and Archeathen Kettermaul Charthagnion is waaay to powerful to attack. The Vidame, however -- the Bellflower Network thinks they can handle her.

The map/plans can be sold for a high price to either House Oberigo or the greater House Charthagnion. (assuming you don't want to go there yourselves to bring justice to the chaotic, thieving Halflings)

Standing over the fallen Bellflower Network agents, the moment of inertia lasts longer than a couple seconds, as each of the four Chelaxian loyalists ponder the value of the decoded Bellflower Network document.

Will the four stay together, their initial purpose of joining accomplished?

The Bogeyman has wanted to expand his reputation beyond Westcrown, a dangerous goal alone -- but together with a small and elite group of loyalists?

Azlain wants to further his own library of lore, and at this point only buying admittance to private libraries and the adventurous search for lost knowledge will really expand the Wizard's horde of intelligence. Either way, both political influence and teamwork power are valuable. Could proposing a longer alliance with these others be beneficial? Certainly if Azlain is to successfully search the ruin west of Gheradescci County, deep in the Badlands, he will need the support of the Count -- and likely these powerful individuals who are allies of Count Vocaturo Spartaco.

Yaos Battori, The Red Widow, feels that (at least a part of) Gheradescci County could be hers. Having essentially left her House-by-marriage she longs for power and influence. House Battori is too insulated from the rest of Chelaxian politics, too focused on House Thrune and pleasing Her Infernal Majestrix the Queen. Could these three indeed continue to help her gain more power?

Magnius Arvanxi comes from a once great House, long since past its grand reputation as an original supporter of Thrune and a dynasty tracing its roots back to Azlanti survivors that washed ashore on the Chelaxian subcontinent. If House Arvanxi is to rise to that level of greatness again then individual members such as himself have to accomplish great things, have to stop relying on reputation, tradition and old-money and older glory. Gheradescci County has been a starting point -- could these three further elevate him to power for the glory of him and his House?

"These findings should be reported. I will need to return to Westcrown. We make a productive team. If you are up for being temporarily called to service, I'd like to formally deputize you all as Hellknight agents." Azlain said, taking off his mask and letting his armor fade back to his usual comfortable robes.

Male Human Investigator 3/Inquisitor 5

Magnius chuckles at Azlain's declaration "I'm already a Hellknight, but thanks for the offer. Yaos and I have our own working relationship that has been very beneficial for us both. As she and I both still have our own grander goals to pursue, some of which coincide with each other, I see no reason to end our partnership."

He pauses, considering their options. "I wonder if it would be more useful, and the reward greater, to first apprehend Avalia and her druid companion, before turning over the evidence of the plot against The Vidame. After all, they will likely want them captured once give them the code, so why not also hand them the conspirators as well?"

"I can try being a Hellknight. As long as I don't have to dress up in all that heavy armour. It's not very feminine is it?" replies Yaos to Azlain's suggestion.

Then, having listened to Magnius replies "Having read over the description of the location of this artificial oasis in the decoded papers, I think there is sufficient information to teleport there. And we just found a scroll of that very spell. If we go straight there now we will catch the pair before they move, assuming the information is accurate. If we delay, they may get away. I know you want to go to Westcrown Azlain, but does it have to be straight away?"

And if you use the scroll to teleport to the oasis you won't be able to get to Westcrown tonight to spy on Winnow.

It's up to you how important that is. And while you don't know when the oasis will be abandoned, tonight, next week or a couple months from now, you know this is your only shot at Winnow.

Male Human Investigator 3/Inquisitor 5

Ray, I know ya like to help remind us of stuff, but you don't need to do so all the time. I was just going to make that reply in game, without needing your prompt.

"We need to get back to Westcrown asap, so we can gather more information on Winnow. However, I believe we'll be able to purchase a second scroll of teleportation once there. Hopefully, our targets aren't planning on abandoning their camp within the next twenty four hours, but if so, maybe we can track them down mundanely."

HP 40/45, AC 21*, Fort +4, Ref +6, Will +8, ArcRes 2/8 Active Effects: Heightened Senses, Defending Bone (45), Extended Shield, Unseen Servant,

"Agents aren't actual Hellknights. They're just registered assets, often undercover. The Darklight Sisterhood is a good example of a well known group of agents." Azlain explained to Yaos as they left.

"Magnius or I would likely be assigned as your sponsoring overseer. It's less authoritarian than it sounds. You'd get a writ, and emblem that you could wear when you need to announce that you're operating under the authority of your sponsoring Order. They're really quite fashionable."

"The important part is that it would bring The Boogeyman into the fold as a legally operating agent of the Empire. I can't really continue to work with a known criminal unless I make him a registered asset."

"So no, returnign to Westcrown does not have to be straight away. If I must, I can send Mindy to drop off the information we've gathered. The important part is to ensure that if we fall, that the information we've learned does not vanish with us."

It's kinda like being a Bounty Hunter or some other form of registered freelancer who often works closely with Law Enforcement. You aren't really one of them, but you sometimes get to act with their authority, and if you run into them you have an easier time of things because you can prove you're really on their side.

Yaos listens to Magnius and nods and was about to reply when Azlain spoke. She waits and then says "I don't expect dealing with two more Bellflower Agents would be a problem. But you are right, there could be more there and we have information of importance. Magnius points out we should return to Westcrown to spy on Winnow. I have no objection. If people are finished here, we should gather the loot and teleport there. I expect you can use the scroll Azlain, would you like to or shall I?"

"Known criminal," The Bogeyman scoffs. "I do what the Hellknights cannot: I deliver the justice of Asmodeus without compromise, with terrible swiftness and righteousness."

"But I welcome the company as I would not have succeeded in executing these foul dissident without your more than able help," The Bogeyman continues almost pleasantly.

"And I know Westcrown better than most," he turns to Yaos, expressing his readiness to go.

HP 40/45, AC 21*, Fort +4, Ref +6, Will +8, ArcRes 2/8 Active Effects: Heightened Senses, Defending Bone (45), Extended Shield, Unseen Servant,

In truth, Azlain agreed with The Boogyman's assesment of his actions, but he couldn't exactly say that, so he didn't.

"Go ahead," he replied to Yaos question about the scroll.

Yaos briefly relates her tale of meeting Kylian Phandros and his bisexual friends at their fencing practice/ hang-out, and of his new associate Winnow, of whom he wants to know more:

.

Kylian Phandros is the bastard son of Viscount Jeremiah Phandros. He has an impressive upbringing but House Phandros won't provide Kylian support from House resources. The young bastard has to rely on his own talent and drive to build a power base. And he is.

Recently, Kylian Phandros made contact with a thin, pale agent from Pangolais in the Uskwood. Kylian wants to pursue an alliance but he's concerned he may be in over his head. He's asked Yaos to spy on the Pangolais agent for basic information. He hopes to form an alliance with The Red Widow as well.

”Kylian Phandros on Winnow” wrote:

The agent’s name is Winnow, though "his" is not a good choice of word. Winnow is androgynous, pale of skin and white hair. I assume a typical acolyte of Pangolais, if he's human at all. I don't know whether he casts a shadow in light but there's always a shadowy reflection of him, or two or three, at his feet in different angles. Sometimes I can just make out the outline of an ethereal form over his shoulder. I've never seen him show emotion but I've only known Winnow for the past two weeks. I've never seen him during daylight and, you know, was starting to wonder....

Anyway, Winnow and I may be doing business together relating to Nisroch and I wouldn't mind knowing a bit more about him. As I said, he'll be in the Pleatra and the Dusk Market tonight before departing back to Nisroch. Tonight The Dusk Market is going to be in the old Slave Quarters for House Jeggare next to Ramble Gardens.

Get me some information and I'll tell you all I know, limited though it may be.

Teleporting to Ramble Gardens in he mostly abandoned, crumbling Parego Dospera of Westcrown is easy for The Red Widow, Yaos. An empty eighty-five acre park, overgrown and always in shadow from its canopy of dark trees, Ramble Gardens is perhaps the most dangerous place in Parego Dospera.

Only a few hundred feet away is the old House Jeggare slave quarters, long abandoned and crumbling. Three stories tall of wooden siding and stone corners, Jeggare's old slave quarters are tilting slightly, the foundation on one corner just sinking a few inches. A large yard fenced in by a rusted iron gate that stands open, broken off its hinges, encircles the crooked building. The house seems empty now despite Kylian's information that for this evening only, The Dusk Market is operating out of the broken wreck of a house.

Approaching, you just make out some quiet talking from within the open front door. A veranda looks like it will squeak with any step on the planks approaching the entrance.

Major Eco Drumanis
Westcrown 'Dottari' (city guard officer)

.

You can just glimpse a middle-aged Dottari standing tall in his elegant red and black uniform, glaive in hand, speaking to some people further inside.

Somewhat surprised to see a Dottari standing where the Dusk Market is supposedly operating, The Bogeyman steps into the shadows and approaches carefully to spy on the guard's conversation with the people inside...

Yaos looks around following the successful use of the scroll of teleport and quickly establishes that the group has arrived on target. As the Bogeyman slips away to scout, Yaos slips behind one of the trees and watches the Dusk Market from a distance, thinking I had best hold back. I am near useless at stealth and will likely give him away. If he is attacked I will summon aid. Pale Wing takes up position high in the tree, on overhead watch as often.

Major Eco Drumanis
Westcrown 'Dottari' (city guard officer)

.

The Bogeyman creeps up to the veranda to peek into the front door wherein the Dottari is speaking to those inside the old House Jeggare slave quarters, now abandoned and tonight's location for illegal The Dusk Market -- at least according to Kylian Phandros.

Yaos, careful not to get close enough to be overheard by a perceptive city guard, stays by the rusty gate encircling the front yard, adjacent to Rambling Gardens.

Inside the open front door of the old slave quarters Major Eco Drumanis, glaive in hand, speaks harshly to four Chelaxian men in robes, hurrying them to leave this place. They merely continue to nod in pleasant acquiescence and, most unhurriedly, finish handing each other various sheets of vellum and parchment, glancing at them each in turn as the Dottari grows ever more impatient, inviting them to leave with posthaste. And the four men nod, and even take another step closer to the entrance of the house, and continue to exchange the sheets of parchment and vellum.

The Dottari bears the rank insignia of a Major.

And as The Bogeyman peers over the veranda to look in, the Dottari happens to glance back toward the old front door....

Do I need an additional Soceity check to learn anything useful about the guard?

Major Eco Drumanis
Westcrown 'Dottari' (city guard officer)

.

Magnius recognizes the Dottari easily, Major Eco Drumaris-- a high ranking officer with a spotty background, having a history of chaotic-like behavior on his record. Despite his methods and reputation, the Dottari is well known to 'get the job done' and has risen in the ranks of Westcrown to quite a lofty rank.

He is well supported by Lord Mayor Aberian Arvanxi.

All this being said, Magnius further knows that the Dottari officer is rumored to the Chelaxian lawman who *allows* The Dusk Market to continue to ply its trade in the Parego Dospera, that he has been bought off or corrupted, somehow. However,.... this seems unlikely as his superiors -- and Lord Mayor Aberian Arvanxi himself -- would not allow that if they didn't have some use for the Dusk Market.

(and assuming Knowledge: Local is equally adept):
Major Eco Drumanis is a trained Fighter, able to wield his glaive with an improved technique of threatening critical spots on his opponent. Further, his weapon training is double that of the standard Fighter in Westcrown's city guard and the focus on which he has studied using the glaive is greater than most fighters.

Magnius is confident he can walk right up to Major Eco Drumanis and ask what's up.

It would be perhaps inappropriate to threaten or bully such a high-ranking Dottari, especially one with the personal favor of Lord Mayor Aberian Arvanxi, but it could be done (with the right leverage).

All this said, it's likely that word of Magnius Arvanxi's conversation with the Dottari would eventually reach the ears of the Lord Mayor, and it is unknown how GrandCount Aberian Arvanxi would react.

.

Arvanxi fun & Gameplay history:

I remember when you guys arrived in Westcrown you stayed at an empty condo of House Arvanxi's for a couple days without, um, 'doing the courtesy of announcing your presence'(?) to House Arvanxi. I assured you this would not be a major gaffe in polite society as long as you didn't stay too long and kept a low profile. You were completely successful in this.

I don't fully remember Magnius' relationship with House Arvanxi. And I know we didn't discuss his rapport with the House patriarch, Aberian Arvanxi.

I think we can get around it easily -- maybe come up with a reason for the Dottari to not mention you to the Lord Mayor -- or cast Modify Memory or something (if you have it) -- or even don't reveal yourself as an Arvanxi. Lots of possibilities.

In any case, I wanted to throw this out here and see what happens. But I wouldn't worry o'ermuch, you're here to spy on Winnow.

My inactivity has a different motive. My character is a focused master summoner. A skill monkey they are not. My knowledge society is not that good and my stealth, well I am good at summoning creatures. If I do anything it will spoil others efforts.

Only a moment later the Dottari half-exasperatedly sighs and exits through the front door onto the veranda, grumbling under his breath until stepping on the squeaky planks of the wide porch.

His eyes don't perceive the stealthy Bogeyman mere feet away under the veranda's edge, and Yaos and Azlain are carefully far away as not to be seen.

But Magnius, entering the yard through the broken gate, makes eye contact with Eco Drumanis.

"Long Live Thrune," he addresses Magnius tacitly, offhandedly, as though it's routine. There is no passion in the Dottari's greeting, no zeal or reverence.

"I assume you're here for a reason but, alas, there's nothing left to see. I shut it all down."

You can barely hear the shuffling of the dark robed figures still inside.

Magnius arches an eyebrow at Eco. "Shut all what down? I was to meet someone here to discuss some pending business venture."

"Well, you ought to strike at your business venture quickly; they're all but left, now, the shady folks."

Seeing Magnius investigating with due diligence, The Bogeyman looks around for their target while paying particular attention to the Dottari's words...

The Bogeyman notices the hint of hesitation when the Dottari said "shut it down" as though that is not the complete or accurate story. The Major is leaving something out or lying outright.

"I shut down the 'business' that was being done here. It wasn't legal, maybe wasn't even lawful." The Dottari's eyes survey Magnius. There is a note of uncertainty in his tone. Perhaps he is unsure how to approach this conversation.

"But, Sir, if you were looking for someone or something specific -- maybe you can tell me and I can tell you where you can find them tomorrow." It doesn't sound as though he's fishing for information; he doesn't seem curious or even terribly interested.

What does The Bogeyman know about the dusk market? How large is it? Is it open from dusk until dawn? Also, assuming that the market is not in plain sight, is there an underground to the abandoned slave quarters? And another entrance, which could be used to circumvent the Dottari?

Knowledge, Society: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

Duh.

The Dusk Market is transient, a different location each evening, and fences and merchants are usually active for a couple hours around twilight, give or take.

The current time may be late for Dusk Market activity, but would still likely have some business. That is, unless the Dottari shut it down.

Or, is Eco Drumanis a corrupt 'guard' for the illegal activities and just waiting for a password?
....Or is he unsure if you're here in an official capacity for Cheliax somehow and he's trying to cover his own ass?
....Or is he hoping for a bribe?
Or something else.

(You did catch a glimpse of robed figures inside the old home earlier -- Eco Drumanis was trying to hurry them out.)
